Sorry if this has been addressed already... It's been a while (2 years) since my last root so I got rusty.
I just bought a Note 9 and I'm preparing to root. However looks like rooting this phone will cause the loss of some functionalities.
Will I still lose them if I use Magisk? For what I remember it doesn't actually change the system so it should be fine?

You would need a custom recovery to root. Unofficial binaries of any kind will trip the Warranty bit in turn disabling all knox apps permanently. Magisk would protect you from the SafetyNet side of things though.

Hey there!
since hours im trying to get my S7 Edge G935F unrooted after ive placed apps as system apps.
equal if i try to unroot with magisk manager options, magisk uninstaller zip in twrp while rooted with magisk or when rooted with superSU with full-unroot option im always causing a boot loop and i need to flash the rom (Android 7.0 G935FXXS2DRA9_G935FDBT1DQJ1_DBT) from new. (Ive rooted via twrp in both cases)
Now ive tried with an app from playstore called "Impactor System Unroot" to my surprise it worked! but not as good as i hoped for because now im not rooted anymore but i cant pass safety net.... im running out of ideas and i hoped someone with more knowledge and better understanding may could come up with a magic trick! i beliefe that its somehow must be possible after all.
As always thanks for your time, help and answer!
Best regards
Chris
If your device now really has all traces of root removed, it's likely that it's an unlocked bootloader that is triggering SafetyNet. You'll have to relock it, but keep in mind that this will wipe your device. And if you don't do it right you might end up with a device that can't boot at all and be quite difficult to recover...
Why though? Is it really worth the hassle?

So in other words unrooting and keeping custom system apps is not possible right? because wipe in order to relock the BL will take the away anyway
Just because of messing around more or less haha. wanted to see if i can somehow put a gps spoofer as system app and get rid of root afterwards

Hehe, I am trying the same thing on my Huawei without success, tried the options you tried as well, hoping for some solution.
Hey im new to Samsung phones and got an S10+ preordered. Will I be able to flash TWRP and Magisk the day I get it or will it take some time? Also is there anything special about rooting Samsung phones?
Thank you for your answers!
I would not expect for immediately. Devs need to reverse engineer/hack their way around the firmware locks to attain root and keep the device bootable. Once they do that, the devices are ours. though I cannot imagine it would be too different from the 9 series with flash counters and such not.
Edit: Typos.

If it's the US snapdragon I highly doubt it but with exynos most likely and it will trip knox just like the Note 9.

I will get the exynos version. What are the disadvantages of triggering knox? Thank you for letting me know.

You will loose Samsung Pay, secure folders and banking apps probably won't work. There is more but that's all that comes to mind right now. Uninstalling root and flashing everything to stock won't fix the lost apps either, it's permanent. I think it will reset your phone too.
Root
Banking apps will work once able to flash Magisk, simply using a system-less root method will allow for work arounds such as Magisk hide etc. which will definitely allow for such apps to work. Exactly as has been seen for the past few generations of devices using Magisk! Anyway... on another note, yes bootloader will very likely be unlockable on Exynos variants allowing for TWRP and custom rom installation but highly unlikely on Snapdragon variants.

Yes because the past root methods trip knox and blow a efuse witch is not reversible. Unless a different root method is discovered this phone will be no different. As the post says above there are some workarounds but that is not a guarantee. Some apps can not be fooled.

Are you talking about sig. spoofing like Firegapps and stuff?
I'm waiting for anyone who has enough guts to try, all I really want is v4a.
This is the last galaxy I buy I think, prolly go one plus next time. But yea this is a waiting game. I'm waiting for someone to bribe the dev's to prenstall v4a for us in an ota update. Hey be a great April fools joke ....heh
I've been an Android user for a long time and was into the rooting and custom ROM scene in the days of the DROID phones, Nexus, and early Pixel devices.
Once I got my Pixel 3 and then a Samsung S20 after that I didn't really have a reason to root any longer as I didn't want to mess with custom ROMs.
Now I'm using a Pixel 5 and while I still don't really want to root it seems to be the only way to hide the nav bar in conjunction with Fluid Navigation Gestures. This is a big deal for me as I have been using FNG for years now and really don't like Google's default gesture nav. I'm using 3-button nav for now but would love to get FNG back.
Anyways, I'm looking into rooting the Pixel 5 and the process seems much more involved then it used to be, and I see lots of people talking about not getting OTA updates (minor security patches, not even whole Android version updates).
From what I remember back when I was rooting phones ~5 years ago it was much simpler and did not preclude you from getting OTA updates. Especially on Nexus devices, and even early Pixels if I'm remembering correctly, rooting was simple and didn't break when you updated.
Amy I remembering this correctly? Is Google cracking down on rooting much more these days? I would just be so happy if I could get proper FNG back, this phone would be absolutely perfect for me if I could just do that without much fuss.

I can't speak for the topjohnwu (Magisk "Magic" man) but for us end users, rooting is pretty easy for Pixel phones. Install Magisk manager, put copy of boot.img on phone, patch it through Magisk manager, put patched boot image on pc and flash it in fastboot. All after unlocking bootloader and enabling USB first.
I've always downloaded and installed my own updates so getting ota's is not an issue for me. I use FNG as well.
I had the original Samsung Nexus. First phone I ever rooted. I had so much fun with that phone. Seems like there was a limitless amount of custom roms. I was hooked.
It may seem that way as we do not have TWRP so you're doing different steps. They aren't necessarily harder steps, just different. I've only owned this phone for 1 update cycle but it took perhaps 10-15 minutes to upgrade, re-root and be back up and running as I was before.

Thanks for the reply. When you rooted the phone originally did you have to do a factory reset? And when you update and re-root do you have to reinstall the magisk modules or does everything just start working again like it was before the update?

Thanks. Do you have to wipe the phone as part of the rooting process?
Also, when you do update do you have to re-enable 3-button nav so that when you are unrooted (after update) you can use the phone? Do all the magisk modules and other root-only things just come back on their own once the phone is rooted again?

Unlocking bootloader will wipe your phone. Most of your settings are remembered when applying new firmware as long as you remove the -w from the update-all.bat
It is recommended that you remove all modules before updates so that when you re-root you don't bootloop (in case the mods need updated to new firmware).

I'm not sure if Exynos can be root as of now...If you are on the SD version, there are some posts here that show how to unlock the BL, install magisk and SU...but honestly, it's best to wait until some foolproof method is out...whatever be the case, you will lose Knox and other Knox related stuff
Exynos can be rooted I believe, but ask yourself why you want or need to root your phone.
I've had various Android phones since around 2009, and this is the first Android device I've owned that I haven't immediately rooted, and don't immediately see the need to. Previously, I mainly rooted because I wanted XprivacyLUA, Viper4Android and AFWall (amongst other things like Titanium Backup and Root Explorer but they're the main three). However, in the 3 weeks I've had this phone I've not really missed them. I use Netguard for a firewall, and the DAC appears to be good enough to not really need Viper. XPrivacy is a miss, but not one I can l can't deal with.
I'm not ruling out rooting it at some point in the future. I've just decided it's not required right now. Especially as I've started using Samsung Pay and that would immediately and permanently be lost once Knox is tripped.
So I will lose warranty in June, and require my phone to be rooted for a few reasons however, I just wanted to know is it likely that the screen could die like others mentioned? and will Samsung repair screen if it's rooted? Also how would I root it? Also could Google Pay work?
I Need root access since I live in a bad reception area and want to use Auto airplane toggle as it would save battery life and other mods.
Anyways, Sorry for bombarding people with questions
If your warranty is done by June, and you root the device after your warranty period, then it doesn't matter if you have a dead screen. You will still have to pay to get it replaced. In case you root before that, you will lose all functions related to Knox.
Thanks. Are dead screens common issue?

Rooting is also in this post: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...t-for-galaxy-s21-series-b-n-0-u-u1-w.4233567/
Btw I am also considering rooting, I just don't know if it is worth it, if there are some good mods that requires the phone to be rooted.
i'd root too if there is a way to revert Knox, if only to optimize them google apps under naptime, in particular, and squeeze out more batt juice, in general. but, sadly, no...
I finally rooted my phone!!!
Just one thing, How will I update my phone for future updates (like one up 4.1)?
You will need to download the latest release for your model from Sam firmware and flash it on your phone.
Every time I try updating my phone I get this error what do I do please help!?

You cant use the system OTA updates anymore. Use ODIN with Home_CSC to update monthly firmware.
