New to N3, quick questions regarding ATT and Root

Hey all, so Ive been lurking for a few weeks now about about to order a N3 thru ATT. Im actually coming from a Nexus 5 where things are very easy so bear with me. Just wanted to get clarity before I made a purchase
1. Not so much related to root but Im planning to get the phone, root it, and apply the Xposed modules, to see if I can live with Touchwiz. Im assuming (will need to confirm) that ATT would take back within 14 days if it doesnt go so well, assuming I dont trip warranty flags, etc. Anyone know their policy?
2. From my reading, to root this, I actually need to run a lower firmware. Is this still 4.3 or is it like 4.2.2?
3. The general process is to open device, keep off wifi, oneclick it, odin it, apply root. They to disable OTAs via Titanium Backup. Is this correct?
4. Does doing the above method trip any flags? I believe there are two, a KNOX one and a general Custom one
5. Similarly, if the answer is yes, are there methods to get it back.
6. Limitations of the root method above is that still no access to custom recoverys, so no ROMs, but the xposed framework should work just fine. Also TB cannot do restores? Anything else Im missing?
7. Last one, regarding the older firmware, any idea what is different between the rooted firmware and the 'now current' one? I mean besides probably added security to prevent root. Any actual bug fixes or features?

1. You don't need to live with touchwiz - you can hack it up (there are modded versions with minor changes) or just replace it with Nova Launcher. Nova doesn't even need root....
2. No, this is not true. You can root via RDLV on MI9 firmware, or use Kingo root on later versions (however, there has been debate over whether kingo has malware). If you have MJ5 firmware, you cannot root via RDLV, at least not at the moment (and cannot downgrade). You can keep root with RDLV after upgrading by using supersu survival mode, according to others (I haven't tried this myself, since the update checks builtin apks and won't install if you've modified SecLauncher4.apk to customize touchwiz, so i'd have to revert that...)
3. No. See the RDLV thread, it's a bit more complicated. For kingo, I don't know anything about the process.
4. Makes it custom, but does not trigger Knox flag.
5. Custom can be undone by returning to stock. Knox is an e-fuse and can never be reset.
6. XPosed and TB work fine.
7. Was wondering the same thing myself.

Thanks. Regarding Touchwiz, as soon as the device is rooted I plan to put Nova Beta on there as well as Wanom for Xposed to more simulate the stock experience. Plus drop most of the stock Samsung apps in favor of Googles.
It sounds like a need to read up more on the firmware and root method. I suppose the RDLV was for an older firmware which, if Im buying the phone now, may no longer be possible
Is MI9 the default stock firmware the phone had been shipping with, or is it now shipping with MJ5? (or is MJ5 an OTA update only)?

Nonroot vs Root

Hey guys, im stuck on deciding whether i should root my note 4 or not. What's really bugging me is that i will trip knox and will it devalue the phone?
Any benefits of rooting it right now? vs nonroot
i've seen some threads of rooting problems with some apps and such and im not sure if i should wait or not. Im coming from a rooted s4 and i kinda miss being rooted. Come on guys post what you think here!

Root if something you want needs it, otherwise there's not any need. Do you need tomatoes? I dunno.

As stated above, root if you have the NEED to root. For me, I got plenty. Smoothness, debloating, batterylife, awesome rooted apps out there (I know..only three reasons.) For others, they need a specific app they need to run on their phones and it will need root.
If non of these are an issue to you, do not root. If you cannot think of a reason to root without having the benefit of root vs non root listed out to you, I will advice you do not root because that tells me you actually do not have the need to root. Make sense?
As far as knox is concern...I will say only trip if if you have no need to send it straight to Samsung while your phone is still functioning. I say this because they will send it right back to you. Now if your phone is fried, how will they check exactly if knox is tripped? The carriers do not care, tmobile do not care. Most of the workers think nova is a rooted app. Thats how much they know about root.
You go to a carrier, simply do not give them a reason to think you are rooted. People like to take a phone with custom roms and custom kernels on there...thats not smart. They boot your phone, a message at the top most left of the phone will tell them you are rooted. Always go to the store with stock ^.^

I have the Note 4. I root it about 2 weeks later after I got it. My reason: get ride of all the bloat junk that I dont need; now I can write to my SD card; unlimited hotspot; lean machine and good battery life. Its good to have su access.

Im in the same boat, sorta. Ive always rooted. Everything i had, even the old windows phones. This is the longest ive lasted non rooted. Im getting the itch. My question, if i root, flash twrp, does it erase my data? Not a big deal really, but im on level 110 on ea sports king of the course. Would suck to start over.

Neither rooting nor flashing a recovery will wipe your data. Some phones ship with the unlockable bootloaders and the unlocking process wipes the data (for example, on Google Nexus devices). But the bootloaders on T-Mobile Samsung phones are unlocked by default, so flash away

Rooted is the way to go! Only reason I haven't rooted yet is because I'm waiting for Android 5.0 to drop next month hopefully ! Then I will gladly root. Phone is much better when it is under your control.

Those of you who rooted the Note 4, can you confirm if root disables:
Private mode - Possible fix (old fix)
S-Health (maybe only if using Xposed) - Possible fix?
Screen Mirroring (wireless) - Possible fix?
Recording calls (?)
I would want to root mainly to gain access to the external SD card, possibility to enable/disable flight mode using profiles and wouldn't mind about OTA ora Knox 0x01.
But it's annoying to lose those functions for me.

I rooted but on a custom ROM and I have zero issues with private mode or S-health. I guess the issue is when you're only rooted on stock ROM. But apparently there's walkarounds for those issues.

Thanks, but actually I was interested on (possible) issues on stock ROM and, most importantly, if the walkarounds really work.

[Q] Pingpong root and Twrp Manager....???

Ok, so i googled a bit and do see that some people have had issues trying this, but most of the examples i was reading were on devices from carriers with locked bootloaders. Since the tmo version has an unloacked BL was wondering if anyone has tried this or not?
I was thinking of simply using flashify or twrp manager to install recovery from within my currently rooted (superuser) rom. Most people that have tried using locked bootloaders endup with a soft brick from what i have seen. Just not sure how much the unlocked bootloader would help us in this situation.
I know i can just use CF auto root but was trying to do it without tripping knox really. However, i have never had issues with any warranty through tmobile (rooted, tripped knox, whatever) and with the announcement of android pay, i am way less interested in samsung pay so tripped knox wouldnt be the end of the world... but still curious
EDIT: So apparently chainfire just released something called flashfire that appears it can do exactly what i am looking for. Anyone else looking for the same should check it out...

So, this will not trip knox? I'm currently stock waiting for the 5.1 update to see if it's worth it to keep stock or root my phone. I just want to root it so bad because I could hypothetically get double battery life with the tweaks I would do. I'm interested in Samsung Pay (sorta) but if Google Wallet/Android Pay will have the same functions, then IDC.

If you install recovery no matter what method it will trip. For Roms, Flashfire won't trip as long as you don't flash boot.img aka kernel. You need to remove it before flashing

[Q]Possible to root Note5 then unroot it w/o voiding warranty under those conditions?

I'd like to start with what Samsung previously said that its devices are "Developer Friendly" which is the silliest thing I've ever heard.
So far, I've done something stupid (Yah what's next?)
So basically, I deleted some of my best photos by mistake (Sure Samsung is not dummy-proof) and want to get them back.
I've searched for some recovery softwares and despite they to be time wasting tools for the sake of not doing what they have to do, however, almost all of them (at least all what I found) are requesting root privilege.
My SGNote5 (SM-N920C) isn't rooted and I don't want to root actually (Even though I'm missing the fun I had with my rooted SGS4) just for not losing the KNOX security platform.
I was thinking, and if it is a must to root my Sammy device, what if just root it without flashing any custom firmware even with using the stock enforcing rootable kernel provided by @garyd9, trying my luck of restoring photos and unroot it. Would that trip the KNOX as well (Really!)?

once its rooted, it trips knox, which is a hardware thing, so it cannot be reverted.

Is rooting with Magisk possible?

Hey im new to Samsung phones and got an S10+ preordered. Will I be able to flash TWRP and Magisk the day I get it or will it take some time? Also is there anything special about rooting Samsung phones?

I would not expect for immediately. Devs need to reverse engineer/hack their way around the firmware locks to attain root and keep the device bootable. Once they do that, the devices are ours. though I cannot imagine it would be too different from the 9 series with flash counters and such not.

If it's the US snapdragon I highly doubt it but with exynos most likely and it will trip knox just like the Note 9.

You will loose Samsung Pay, secure folders and banking apps probably won't work. There is more but that's all that comes to mind right now. Uninstalling root and flashing everything to stock won't fix the lost apps either, it's permanent. I think it will reset your phone too.

Banking apps will work once able to flash Magisk, simply using a system-less root method will allow for work arounds such as Magisk hide etc. which will definitely allow for such apps to work. Exactly as has been seen for the past few generations of devices using Magisk! Anyway... on another note, yes bootloader will very likely be unlockable on Exynos variants allowing for TWRP and custom rom installation but highly unlikely on Snapdragon variants.

Yes because the past root methods trip knox and blow a efuse witch is not reversible. Unless a different root method is discovered this phone will be no different. As the post says above there are some workarounds but that is not a guarantee. Some apps can not be fooled.

i have read about some way to root without trip kNox but you have to dont use magisk or xposed just you got an access to system files.

Wish SuperUser root XDA god 'Chainfire' hadn't retired!

I'm waiting for anyone who has enough guts to try, all I really want is v4a.
This is the last galaxy I buy I think, prolly go one plus next time. But yea this is a waiting game. I'm waiting for someone to bribe the dev's to prenstall v4a for us in an ota update. Hey be a great April fools joke ....heh
