Do NOT buy this phone in the US unless Sony gets its phones approved to work with T-Mobile & AT&T
Sadly Sony is the only phone maker that offers a NORMAL sized phone with the Compact series.
Please show me ANY other options for an Android phone with a 4.6"-4.8" screen with a good camera. THERE ARE NONE! The battery life is also beyond incredible. I easily get 1+ (up to 2) days battery life with heavy usage. Standby time (screen off) is easily 7 days (no greenify or any of that crap needed).
I have a Sony Xperia X Compact and it is the BEST ANDROID PHONE I have ever had.
Despite that I have to say that NOBODY SHOULD BUY ANY SONY PHONES.
The phone is awesome and supports pretty much any 3G and 4G band out there but Sony refuses to get these phones approved by AT&T and T-Mobile for VoLTE.
That means (for T-Mobile as an example) that the Xperia X Compact technically supports T-Mobile's super-duper Band 12 LTE which has almost better coverage than Verizon, BUT because the phone is not approved for VoLTE, Sony phones will almost immediately get disconnected from that T-Mobile tower. You may be standing next to someone with an approved phone that has 100% coverage, yet the Sony Xperia phones will show NO RECEPTION.
Sony phones should be able to at least connect to Band 12 for data but they don't. It may technically have the ability to connect to Band 12 and even use VoLTE, but the tower refusal to keep the connection. Sony then apparently also screwed up the band prioritization, because Sony phones even have issues connecting to non VoLTE networks (eg Band 4).
As a result, ALL SONY PHONES ARE PRETTY MUCH UNUSABLE on T-Mobile and AT&T AS A PHONE.
Do NOT buy any Sony phones if you want to use them on T-Mobile and AT&T, though I can tell you that they are the BEST phones otherwise - just not as a phone.
This is pathetic and there is no response from Sony.
But the press releases say these 2 phones will work with t-mobile VOLTE and WiFi Calling.

Yea it will.

Lol yes first compact phone they certified I think. If someone figures out how to retain the volte functions and gain fingerprint sensor, I'm in.
I've had several Sony phones (Z1C, Z3, Z5C, all international single-SIM versions) and since at least the Z3, they all supported LTE on AT&T. I'm not sure anything changed since the Z5 era, so I'm hoping the XZ1C works fine on AT&T.
Can someone confirm this phone will work on at&t in the us? God I want it to do bad.

Unproven rumors that it will be voLTE certified. NO CONFIRMATION FROM SONY OR T-MOBILE.
Even so, you won't be able to use the fingerprint sensor, since the international ROM won't support it.
Do NOT buy!!!!
Cool story but I'll be buying. Can't wait!
Btw, it also not confirmed that it WON'T work. Don't you think it would be a good idea to wait and see.

It seems you have some sort of personal agenda against Sony and/or this particular phone. An idealistic preference for what network(s) should be supported.
I don't know that I care if VoLTE is possible. I want to know if I can make/receive calls, text, access data for app and internet use.
The fingerprint scanner is irrelevant for me, it's there or not.
So simply said, will this work on US networks although some features may not be compatible.

Should be fine like every other Sony Compact I've had. Best Buy and Amazon will be selling it here shortly so one would logically assume they would be US carrier compatible in terms of calling/ data. I could give a crap about VoLTE.
From what I understand T-Mobile was sued a few years ago when someone couldn't make a 911 call in an area where there was only Band 12 LTE (since Band 12 goes through walls better than the 1900 MHz 2G and 1700 MHz 3G that T-Mo uses, apparently legally you are better off with no cell service than with only data service), because of that lawsuit T-Mobile asked phone makers to disable Band 12 on US devices that do not have VoLTE. (I can't post a source because I'm a new member but you can google this). It looks like the Band 12 blocking is done at the phone firmware level, not from T-Mobiles end, so there is a decent chance that the European firmware will not have Band 12 disabled. Though it will most likely also not support VoLTE on T-Mobile. You should still get good LTE data, you just might have to drop back to 3G or 2G for calls.
That said, this would need to be tested. It would be a shame if you had to choose between band 12 coverage without the fingerprint sensor, or a fingerprint sensor with band 12 coverage.
Either way I'm pretty psyched for this phone. I wish there was more competition in this space, but since Sony is the only game in town when it comes to non-phablet smartphones we really don't have much of a choice do we?
Phones re in and ... I am sadly correct.
Maybe if people spent more time to complain to T-Mobile, Sony, the FCC, the FTC and their Senator/congressman we would not have this issue.
Cell phone networks were supposed to let unlocked phones on ... VoLTE violates that.
Currently using my phone on tmobile just fine.
Getting LTE for data and no voice disconnects.
Could care less about volte; most people don't use their phones to talk anymore, myself included. Normal voice works fine for my needs. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Dont assume too much. Since band 12 is much better than bands 2 and 4 in many ways, t-mobile is often not only adding band 12 but using it to replace bands 2 and 4 (kinda makes sense, why would you upkeep obsolete bands). I have had T-Mobile for about a year with an older unlocked phone and they recently switched to a lot of band 12 all over my area/region and now I have lots of total deadzones (including my house). I need to be able to make/receive phone calls, as I'm sure many do. But, for your point, I do still have data, sometimes, it seems to be much weaker a lot of the time compared to what it used to though, but maybe that's just me. I recall coming across a list of cities/places where t-mobile plans to switch things to band 12 and the timeline.
Edit: I am not sure this was the exact article I originally viewed, but here's a link < http://www.prepaidphonenews.com/2017/07/tmo-lte-spectrum-update.html?m=1 >.

So to clarify, if it doesn’t have VoLTE, it just drops to LTE?
So if I flash UK firmware to get the fingerprint scanner (with AT&T) I just get LTE?
I don’t see why this is such a huge issue then, at least for me where I live I’ve never seen anyone with anything more than LTE anyway, it’ll be just business as usual. I also don’t make many phone calls so this doesn’t seem like anything that will hurt me with this phone one bit.

To clarify,
On AT&T, with US firmware, you can:
1] You get LTE data.
2] You can make calls over GSM or UMTS, but not over LTE. This will also drop your data rate to 3G if you are using voice and data simultaneously.
3] You get no fingerprint reader.
On AT&T, with European firmware, you can:
1] You get LTE data.
2] You can make calls over GSM or UMTS, but not over LTE. This will also drop your data rate to 3G if you are using voice and data simultaneously.
3] You get a working fingerprint reader.
The VoLTE certification and modem configurations are only for T-Mobile on US firmware and other operators on specific, non-US firmware variants.

Thank you so much, it’s been hard to find a totally clear picture of this. As someone who doesn’t make a lot of phone calls (but does rely on LTE data) and never uses data during phone calls it sounds like I’ll be good to go with European firmware.
Thank you, that is a good summary for a fellow AT&T user. But one thing I am curious about. Does AT&T have VoLTE at all? Or is tmo the only one with that ability? Basically, if I bought a totally different phone specifically for AT&T would I get VoLTE?

AT&T only offers VoLTE (they brand it: HD Voice) via their own branded handsets (ones bought through them) or any iPhone 6 or newer (as i recall).

Have you?
I was just wondering...........will Sony phones like the upcoming Xperia XZ3 (U.S. version, release date: 10/17/2018) be able to access ALL of AT&T's network radio bands without VoLTE certification? I know T-Mobile doesn't allow access to their 700 MHz spectrum (aka Band 12) without VoLTE certification, but does AT&T require the same thing? Or will users get FULL access, just no VoLTE?? Also, does AT&T actually require VoLTE certification??
Thank You!
I'm on T-mobile and VoLTE works fine. I inserted my coworker's AT&T sim and had the option to enable VoLTE. Unfortunately, I did not think to actually test it.

Hi.......thanks for responding!
Wait.........which exact Xperia phone do you have, and is it a U.S. version or int'l? I know it can't be the XZ3 as it (the U.S. version) doesn't get released on Amazon until next Wednesday.
Ok wait.........nevermind. Your signature logo tells me you have the 2017 XZ Premium. But is it the U.S. version or int'l??
Ok that is interesting about your phone showing the option to enable VoLTE with your co-worker's AT&T SIM card too. I'm sure if it actually showed up as an option that wasn't grayed out then it should definitely work too.
I wanted to know if a company like Sony didn't certify VoLTE with AT&T, would people who use their phones on AT&T's network get full access to ALL of AT&T's radio bands or no. If what you're saying is true, then perhaps they do? I don't know. lol

Oh wow, cool!
So basically you're running a U.S. version then it seems, which is helpful.
Ha! Of course he is. Just my luck! lol
It's fine. I have T-Mobile, but thought that was a "dead issue" since Sony ONLY OFFICIALLY certified the XZ1 Compact with T-Mobile. When he gets back that would be cool if you could though as I have a friend who has AT&T and would like to know.
I guess I'm just shocked b/c this site doesn't have any information about really any recent Xperia flagships having VoLTE (and therefore access to Band 12/700 MHz). So you've tested your phone out using some kind of app to confirm that it can ACTUALLY access T-Mobile's Band 12 spectrum?? And I assume it stays on 4G LTE during calls too? (Please kindly answer both questions.)
Even if all this is true, what sux is the XZ3 (all versions) apparently DOESN'T have Band 71/600 MHz (under 4G LTE) spectrum programmed on it, regardless of version. And according to a recent update from T-Mobile, my area (Chicagoland region) is about to get that exact radio band by like the end of the year. Uggh.........f'ing Sony Mobile! lol

Yes, that's the app, LTE Discovery! I couldn't remember the name of it earlier. lol
Did they finally add Band 71/600 MHz to its list of bands it can detect??
So can I presume that 4G LTE & LTE+ are the exact same thing??
Ok but what about Band 12 though? That's the band that T-Mobile is supposed to require VoLTE certification for in order to access it. An LTE Discovery screenshot of that (must be during a call) would be great actually! I believe it can access Band 12 for data, but the thing I care about is having access to it for calls.
And ok your profile says you're from or in Manila?? I'm confused. lol I hope it's just from b/c if you're not in the U.S. then this info is kinda useless to me. lol
Thanks!!!!!!!

I'm not sure if they added Band 71, doesn't really say in the app. I guess you'll have to contact the developer for that. I have no knowledge of where Band 12 is deployed. I'm in the Philadelphia area right now. Signature is just where I'm from.

Oh ok. Not a big deal. I can just download it again and check it too. It would say in the Settings. When my area first got Band 12/700 MHz, I used the app to detect and notify me of every time it found a Band 12 signal. Shortly after, it began to pop up when I was like in elevators and parts of downtown Chicago, etc., which made me very happy. lol
You can check this map, though of course I think Band 12 will only get utilized when Bands 2 & 4 are not available. Philly? Ok great!! It appears you do have it too.
Well so far this is really great news!! I just can't understand why no one else is confirming this like on that site I linked earlier?? I would assume the U.S. version then will have it too since your firmware is U.S. for the XZ3.
Nice. I used to have a good friend who was Filipino too. Just lost touch over the years.
Thanks again so much!!

I checked and LTE Discovery does NOT currently offer Band 71 detection at this time. So I e-mailed the developer a few hours ago and requested it. Hopefully they add it soon so I can detect Band 71 when it hits my area in the next few months.
Thanks again for all your input! Much appreciated! I will check back with you in a couple weeks. In the mean time, I'm honestly CONSIDERING buying the U.S. XZ3 off Amazon (gets released next Wed) and testing it out myself. LOL I get Band 12 in my condo elevator and parking lot too sometimes, so I should be able to get a screenshot of the phone in Band 12 DURING a call via LTE Discovery when it's detected. But I doubt I'd keep it up cuz no Band 71. FML! lol Still, I'd wanna know for myself so that perhaps when the XZ4 comes out (or XZ3 Premium) if it will have Band 71 and VoLTE confirmed, I will most likely buy & keep it.

Yeah, the XZ3 is a really nice phone. Comparing it with my XZP, I believe it's a nice upgrade. Not a required upgrade, but still a nice one. You can also just wait for it to be available in Best Buy or something so you can try the phone out without buying it. If it comes out in Best Buy. I assume it will, since the XZ2P was.

Yeah, it won't show since you're still on UK firmware. Download the US firmware from Xperifirm, then use newflasher to flash it. Flashtool doesn't support the XZ3 yet.

Yeah I would agree. Yes the XZP has a 4K screen, but not HDR (which of course the XZ2 P got both). The XZ3 having 2K + HDR is really something. Yeah plus it's 18:9 which I DEF prefer over 16:9, and yeah 845 processor.
Typically both Best Buy & Amazon get the newest Xperia phones. But for some reason, even at this point, it appears ONLY Amazon will carry the U.S. XZ3.
So...........even though it won't have Band 71/600 MHz when released, I decided to STILL go ahead and pre-order the U.S. XZ3 off Amazon (release date: next Wed) JUST to confirm for myself what you said and showed me................that with the U.S. firmware, the XZ3 WILL get VoLTE on T-Mobile and therefore will STAY in Band 12 & 4G LTE/LTE+ while on a call as well. If I can confirm this, that is HUGE. HUGGGGGGGGGGGGEEEE!!!! lol
I will of course keep you posted. In the elevator for my condo building b/c the reception is bad there, my phone always at one point switches to Band 12..........and THAT is when I'll strike. When my LTE Discovery app detects Band 12 being utilized, I will make a call right away, and if it stays in 4G LTE, then it's confirmed. If not, F U Sony Mobile!!!!!! F U and die! lol Then for XZ4 or XZ3 Premium, as long as they add Band 71/600 MHz (which my area will get activated on T-Mobile's network by about the end of this year), I'm 99.9% buying it. lol
Thanks again!!

So I'm just reaching out to see if anyone else has had any weird issues like I am using Verizon on the OP 6T.
When the phone has full control over band steering it appears to hug on band 13 for its primary band even when band 4 has plenty of SNR (20 plus DB)
I know the cell config's in my area allow for dual band 4/66 primary 20MHz + 10 MHz and 1 Band 13 10MHz 3CA on most cell sites (confirmed on the cell site on testing on with a Pixel 3 XL).
I've also forced band 4 by disabling band 2 and 13 (the low bands) and it work's great!
It hinders upload performance by a decent bit, usually the cell config's only allow single channel uploads no 2CA around here so if it picks 13 for the primary I'm usually only getting about 15 Mbps up vs 50 ish on band 4.
Possible modem firmware bug?
I really don't understand what are you talking about xD
For sure about something wrong with Verizon signal in mid range (that is all I got).
I have the OP6T on Verizon in CA. Tell me what is that app and I can give you my results. So we can be sure that is not a problem with the phone (probably)
Cheers
I have no issues with my OP6T on Verizon. I got it day one and once I got the CDMAless thing straight, It works very well. I get a better signal at my house than I have with any Verizon phone before it. Mine seems to stick to Band 4 wherever it is available.
I have no issue with Verizon where I live. I never even had to call in to enable CDMA_Less. My phone hangs around LTE Band 13 and XLTE 4 most of the time. I live in a central city and there is good service anywhere so that may not be the case with you.
What app is That and how can we help test our area?
Edit, it is called Network Signal Guru in the app store, not sure what to make of it.
I use Network Info Lite in the past. But this is all above my head and knowledge what TS is talking about..haha

It is check box on your account that when the 6T launched you had to call and get a Verizon tech to do on your account. At first the Verizon system was not recognizing the devices correctly. Without them changing that you could not get MMS messages. I assume that is not needed anymore.

IDK, I had to call them, because my texts wouldn't work. Came from a Pixel and Essential phone with my Sim. Put it in the 6T 2 months ago, phone worked, calls, but not text. Called VZW, the person with support handled it immediately, powered the phone...all good after that. So not sure if people still need to call, but doesn't hurt. They are eventually moving to all CDMAless from what I understand in the future?!?!
I know generally that most unlocked Chineese phones are not Verizon compatible. But, both the OnePlus 6t and 7 pro are even though they are LTE only so I figured there may be a possibility and was curious if anyone actually attempted it.
This seems like the best phone on the market right now, it's almost $200 cheaper than the next snapdragon 855 phone in the US.

Works great on AT&T Prepaid Unlimited, typically for CDMA carriers you need to buy they're approved phones.
I'm actually on Verizon unlimited and had the same questions for them.
I installed my sim card from my previous phone LG v20. And it seems it's using the provisioning from it. All the network info was there. But couldn't seem to get data. So I used shortcut master lite and went to the telephoney part of network settings and had to play with the network settings. Got it to work really well by downloading a network settings app and playing with the band info. It's pretty straight forward and easy to use.
By the way Verizon has no idea what kind of phone I have and it says it's rooted. But it's not. Cloud works great, my Verizon, message+ and anything I throw at it from the Verizon apps. Tech support said that as long as im using my existing sim and have done whatever I did to make it work. Keep doing it. But they have no idea if they are going to setup services and get the info anytime soon.
So I got just what I always wanted.
A nice phone that they can't track or get into it unless I allow them. Perfect
This phone works fine on Verizon, I currently have both the phone and Verizon service. VOLTE works and everything, just no wifi calling
Wow! You all are using the North American Nubia Red Magic 3?
I'm usually on T-Mobile most of the year but during the summer I need Verizon where I go so I didn't consider the RM3. I usually use total wireless or StraightTalk and I've had good luck with slapping their SIM cards into different phones without an issue.
So if you all can tell me the tricks, if any, and which model (US or international) I'll pick one up — sub $500 for S855 and big AMOLED screen!

And what about band 13 on Verizon? Isn't that the main band for them?

No band 13, but Verizon also uses bands 4 and 5 which this phone supports. I actually believe band 4 is their main band. I didn't have to do anything but put my SIM card in. Although in the past when I had a OnePlus 6T, I had Verizon provision my line to be LTE only. Don't know if that step is needed for this phone, as it supports CDMA. I'm using the North American version bought directly from Red Magic.

Thanks for the info. Band 13 (700MHz) is Verizon's main band due to its penetration and distance, according to online info, but you are also correct — 2, 4, along with 5 and 66 all work on Verizon. If they put 71 and 13 in this thing it would have everything. So I should be able to get something in most areas.
Good to know I just need to put the SIM in. I can always activate on my old Moto X Pure.
Thanks again!

Please oh knowledgeable one, bestow upon me the settings you used to get the phone to work on Verizon. I popped my SIM in to the phone when i first got it and ZERO issues for weeks. Then recently all the sudden I no longer had any service whatsoever. No matter how much I tried to play with the settings, nothing seems to work. What appp did you use for the network settings to play with the band info? Really don't want to change carriers right now.
Please and thanks in advance :silly:

Well it was easy, phone off , installed the sim card and poof service for about 2 hours and then I had to keep toggling the airplane mode. Until I remembered when my LG V20 stopped getting signal because I had it rooted. Verizon kept trying to kick it off because they don't want rooted phones on there. And also there software constantly tries to update the phone to remove root on you.
Anyways, I m sure you know this part of Verizon. There are many variations of it. But network settings App. All pretty much show the same menu. But LTE only is what you select. And you will constantly have to go back into it and enable the data. The menu looks like this hopefully I can post it but choose LTE only.

So it basically doesn't work because you have to jump through hoops to make it kinda work?
I remember when I sold my Pixel XL, the guy was able to use it right away on Verizon with his sim card.
Did Verizon add more measures to keep people away with unauthorized phones?

Well all I really know is that they say that they just don't have any info about the phone. It has all the bands that work. Except band 13. I haven't rooted it because there still isn't a functional root for it. That setting in the pic I downloaded, theres a switch that says immediate. That's changes to disabled because of the doze function. It's solely for data. I keep mine on lte only. And just have to change it from disabled to immediate. It's kinda a pain in the rear. But. Its a functioning phone on Verizon service that they say doesn't support it. No Verizon apps except cloud and My Verizon. With limited access. It's great as far as I'm concerned. Biggest problem with Verizon. Is Verizon.
But as soon as a functioning root is available and im comfortable I'll root it and enable band 13. I'm pretty sure it's there. Just Verizon won't pay to get the access to the phones. So there's that.
One more thing the OnePlus 7 pro works on Verizon with some GSM function. There support just won't try to do it on the RM3. Other option is you have a second Sim slot. Get you another sim card and that takes care of emergency stuff.
Guess I'll be buying the best gaming phone ever made, the Red Magic 5G next! Sorry Verizon, it's time to move on. Or you can support this baby and make a lot of money.
Wanted to ask if anyone with a USA model rog 2 tried att Sim card and did it work with att? We already know t-mobile doesn't list those options. This way we can all go search for phones that will suit our needs.
My US model will be delivered either Saturday or Monday and I use AT&T. Will post my results then.
I just talked to support again, and they said no VoLTE or VoWifi on Tmobile, Verizon, or AT&T, or any American carrier. They have no plans to enable it. The suggestion was that I leave them a complaint, so I did so via their form on Asus.com as well as Facebook.
The problem is AT&T is shutting down their 3G service this year so if VoLTE isn't enabled we can't make voice calls.

As is TMobile, from what I understand. You should be able to make calls, but it will default to EDGE, IIRC.

Ok I just tried to confirm and got info they're not shutting down 3G just yet. We still have a few more years.
I guess that's good we'll still have calls but isn't good because there's no reason for VoLTE.
Thanks to ryououki for the offer, we will await your testing and we will be here if u need any help
I seriously don't understand a U.S model, yet no volte? That's just dumb. Wtf?
I can tell you right now it wont work, Its a sick phone but I'm sending it back because of this. Asus screwed up with no VoLTE, no VoWiFi, and only a 1080p screen IMO. Maybe next time they will get it right. I hope the OnePlus 7T and the 7T Pro has it... Crazy!
Just read this for T-Mobile:
Due to lack of VoLTE support you won't be able to place and receive calls including 911 calls in some buildings and some outdoor areas where 2G GSM and 3G HSPA+ signal (marketed by T-Mobile as "4G") is too weak or non-existent while LTE band 12 is available
Great info so far , just need someone to try it with att sim for confirmation.
So far we know,
Tmobile no go on volte or wifi call
Verizon works on data only no calls or txt just like rog one. Cdmaless option unclear at this moment .
Att no test yet
I have a US model on AT&T and can't get VoLTE yet.
I talked to AT&T support and they said there's no compatibility yet.
The IMEI doesn't come up in their system as a known device.
I have at&t and a USA version of the phone, I can confirm as well that the phone drops to 3g when making voice calls.
This is really really bad because at&t plans to shut down their 3g in 2021, that means no voice calls after that. Asus USA knowingly selling a $900 phone that cant make a call in 2 years is borderline fraudulent.

I have to agree. Its just dumb.
Someone needs to see if something like this can work.....

There has to be options somewhere we can atleast get VOLTE working. Yes root will be mandatory, but i am ok with that. I might order one from amazon. Whats the return policy for phones on amazon? Anyone know?
I believe there were reports that VoLTE was working on Tencent models?
We really need to look into making a custom rom for our phones for the US carriers.
Did you try dialer codes *#*#VOWIFI#*#* and *#*#VOLTE#*#*
How ridiculous. This is how you ruin a near perfect phone.

I did more research, it seems to be more on the AT&T side than on the Asus side of things. Barring a few well-know phones like the Pixel 3, most BYOD Android devices on AT&T in general don't get VoLTE, including unlocked versions of Samsung Galaxy devices that are not purchased through AT&T. It looks like AT&T does not enable VoLTE for device models with IMEIs that it does not recognize (i.e. doesn't have AT&T certified ROMs), because they are afraid of getting fined by FCC for non-E911 compliance which requires the carrier to certify E911 support on all handset/firmware when on VoLTE. My guess the Tencent models with VoLTE working are somehow whitelisted by AT&T ad-hoc or they are working on Non-U.S. carriers. So it is more of an AT&T problem than an Asus/ROM issue. (though there may be ROM hacks to ask the handset to force VoLTE even if AT&T doesn't advertise the capability during protocol handshake).
Since this is a much bigger issue than just the ROG II phone, hopefully they have a plan to white list all BYOD Android devices for VoLTE when they sunset 3G. Otherwise AT&T would stand to lose a good chunk of revenue from those who migrate over from other carriers with BYOD phones, say a Galaxy phone with a T-Mobile ROM. You simply can't even offer a BYOD plan if you don't have voice call working for most of the BYOD Android devices.

I'm pretty sure their return policy for phones is the same as all other goods. I bought and returned the original ROG phone last year through Amazon, considering doing the same with ROG II unless there's a breakthrough on providers and features with custom ROMS/etc.
Yea that's pretty dirty to whitelist the Tencent version but not the US model.
