[Q] Question about unlocking and rooting

Hello All,
I am new to phone forums but not new to XDA I have experience with rooting tablets but not phones. I have the Galaxy note Tmobile and I am tired of the bloated crap they give you to run the phone. I did a couple of searches and maybe keying in wrong words. what program do I need to figure out to unlock phone so I can then download the root packages and beging rooting?
Thanks,
Joe

Root for Samsung Galaxy Note 5

Not sure if this goes here but I am new to rooting and don't have many friends who know much about it, I'm trying to find out how to root my Note 5 and not screw it up. sorry for lack of information, I'm literally a complete n00b to this.

Note 8 Snapdragon - Unlocked Bootloader

Quick question. I know there is a roundabout root method for Snapdragon with SamFAIL, but I am curious if anyone is still working to acquire an unlocked bootloader for Snapdragon, for the full root/recovery experience?

Nice canned answer. Don't you think anyone with a brain tries that first? I'm looking for today's updates. Not updates from Oct. 5th. SMH.

It's simple, take a look at what has been done for current & past Galaxy S Snapdragons. Note phones follow just like the SamFAIL method. There's a reason why people go through the trouble of getting Exynos.
If a method happens to be found/released you will easily find it in a search or quickly in the development section cause it will be big news. Search does work well, if you don't find a method, it's cause it doesnxt exist yet. I personally doubt it will ever happen. The Note 8 is the first time I ever went with an international model for the very same reason.

Wasn't asking if it existed yet, already knew that. As mentioned, anyone with a brain does a search prior to asking to see if it exists first. I was asking if it was still being worked on. Is there any possible way to get Exynos version to work on Verizon?

For anyone without a brain.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/search/forum/6801?query=snapdragon bootloader
I'll post a real answer being that all the jerks seem to be chiming in. There has not been an unlocked bootloader on a Snapdragon Samsung device since the Note 4. That was kind of a unique situation because there were Developer's devices floating around at the time. It's never impossible for it to happen, but it is super unlikely for any exploits to allow an unlock at this point. I would even go as far to say that it is almost impossible being that most developers opt out of even owning Snapdragon Samsung devices now and there is likely only maybe a handful of people working on it at best.
To all the "use the search button" people, why not just ignore the post if you don't want to answer it? There is nothing to be gained by being a jerk.
The REAL answer is like @jal3223 says. There are a couple of us working on it. I think like 3...
Is there an Exynos variant that works on Verizon?

It's cause of inability of people like you who do not seem to understand the simple fact that us versions of recent galaxy series have not had any unlocked bootloaders. But unlike any one, you choose to ignore the fact to do some basic search in xda or any other forums. If you feel you are technically sound and smart you should have bought yourself a non snapdragon variant and live happily. Also the dev forum section for note8 has the same q answered multiple times over and over again. Try to keep your pants on before being a sissy to others and ask meaningfully. Peace.

Your so disgruntled. This is not a big deal. It's really not. Dude didn't even ask if it was unlocked, but if it was still being worked on. Which is a legitimate question, even after using the search bar. C'mon guy, stop getting upset, and let's all have some pizza!!!
I appreciate all the REAL answers from those that responded! Glad to hear somebody is still trying, and understand it's a very long shot, but figured since there was a quick root method, maybe there a better chance of unlocking with this Note model.
myechophone may not have found a way to unlock the BL on the Note 8, but he has discovered a way to give himself a period every month, and he is on it right now. Best to ignore him while he has a hormonal meltdown about the forum search.

Well the "quick root method" took advantage of the fact that the s8 and s8+ are very similar firmware and hardware wise. Therefore we were actually looking for exploits for 3 devices at once. It was first found to be working on s8. Then we tested on N8. Sure enough it worked. At that point I had been working on root for N8 for almost a month straight(got my phone early)
Sorry new here.. So am I to believe there is a root method for Carrier unlocked version snapdragon Note 8? If so what is it and does it trip Knox? Sorry for the dumb questions.

Just take your time and read the instructions. Rooting it is very easy, just follow the directions. You'll be better off learning it instead of someone doing it for you the way you're wanting.

Do not feel bad about the jokes, but as jammol says, take your time, do searches, learn how to, if you do not have any idea about root and everything related, it is pointless to root, even dangerous for your device, even people that have rooted many devices before are somewhat reluctant to root their note 8, incluing me, if you want to root, then get the necesary knowledge first, and then have fun rooting your device, good luck
I have been trying to figure it out on my own. I am very good with computers and custom build computers etc. But the files are different from all the tutorials I have seen. The files I download after extracting them are different than the ones in all the tutorials. So I basically need help and need someone that knows rooting to help me. And whoever said there is no point in rooting if u don't know how to root is the dumbest thing I've ever heard. You can get apps on the app store that requires root access also I can get custom ROMs etc. So anyone that is willing to help me root my note 8 please comment below. BTW I'm willing to pay 10-20 dollars for someone to help me get my phone rooted.
I did not tell you that you did not know what root is, I was only trying to encourage you to investigate and learn how to do it, so, do not say I am dumb, by the way,I am not the lost one hereā€¦ anyway, good luck with that attitude
Slight contradiction?

I might be going OT here, but dude seriously. If you're good with computers, you'd have this figured out too (According and to quote you: "This is the dumbest thing I've ever heard")
I sincerely encourage you to really read and if not, read again and again to root it yourself. It's not that difficult.
If the files don't add up, try again and look where you probably went wrong.
We're here to help man, but at least try once more by yourself, for yourself. This time, cooled down and chill.
I don't see the point of rooting right now, the snapdragon model doesn't have any major roms worth switching to right now.. And I don't see why you would use anything else that needs root, simple things like adblock and such don't need root. Infact, I'm positive anything you want root for I could do without root.

LOL I am pretty decent with computers. Never used .Tar files. And have never rooted a phone. I just came from IOS to Android and am asking for someone to help guide me through rooting my phone. Is that too much to ask for? Im even offering 20 dollars to someone that does so. The reason i am asking for help is because in Obin when I click on AP to open the System files there is no .Tar file. And ive Extracted the file several times and downloaded the file over and over trying to get different results and even tried several different tutorials. So for everyone to tell me to just keep reading and educating myself on rooting is not what im asking for. Im not asking for Mentors. lol Im asking for someone to help me root my phone because i have having problems with the files etc. If the files were the same as the tutorials then i would of had my phone rooted 2 weeks ago. Ive been trying to figure this out for 2 weeks now and have found no solution. Now back to my post. If you are here to just write "Dude we are trying to help you but just do more research and figure it out on your own" then please dont write anything. Im needing someone that is expert in rooting Androids and can help me. Im not trying to become a expert at rooting android phones. Im wanting to root my phone so i can download the rooted only apps in the app store and maybe down the road put stock android on my note 8 if posible. But thats for me to decide. Post the specific questions that are tripping you up in the root threads, and people can help you catchup. It's not as hard as it seems and if you're good at computers it shouldn't take long. Paying for root makes sense at first but is a recipe for disappointment in my opinion. Friendly suggestion

Yes, i might just proceed with doing that. The problem is I am leaving for work 2maro morning and don't have time to trial and error rooting my phone and I restored my phone to root it so I want to root it before i leave 2maro so i can download all my apps etc and don't have to restore again and lose everything again. That's why I just need someone to run me through it as I don't have much time.

Dude, your 20 bucks offer doesn't matter because that's irrelevant. Xda been about customizing and learning -yourself-.
I rooted my S4 back in the days in a few minutes, if you'd read a few CF-Auto-Root threads you'll understand how dead simple rooting CAN be and you'd understand Odin/ how to place files. I encourage you to read through one and just understand how the process worked back then.
Beware: You WILL NOT trip knox, but since it's a SYSTEM ROOT you CAN'T use Magisk. No systemless-root. Banking apps will/ can fail.
The main thread already contains very simple instructions. If those aren't comprehensive, not sure who can help you further. (Select V2.5 files if you're on the LATEST firmware /recently updated to December or January patch)

Else if that really doesn't work, hit me up on Telegram. I'll try and walk you through: saadatbaig
Straight up....u shouldn't root. First U don't even know what u want it for. Second u need to do it yourself, which means reading, and reading and rereading that whole samfail thread, having all the files and backup files and being very prepared to get yourself out of trouble so you're not out of a phone for a couple days scrambling for help. and if someone helped you, you'll just be asking for help again when there's an update and you have to unroot update and root again. It's best to learn yourself and be prepared so you can get yourself out of a jam. I am a 11 yr xda member, and this is the first android phone in the last 8 yrs that I haven't rooted. Why well, not really a need to or want to root unless the bootloader gets unlocked to flash custom kernels and roms and get rid of the 80% charge limit. Which I believe is NOT going to happen ever with the n8. I for one am glad this root is a bit more difficult than the last 5+ yrs or so cause it separates the boys from the men with rooting. Too many lil brats brick a new device and run to insurance to save them cause they want to skip steps, not put in the time to be prepared for trouble and READ. One click root is Bull**** and shouldn't be allowed because simply too many people don't know what they are getting into...... Especially if they are coming from an iPhone?
I'm really not trying to sound like a ****. It's just that, I would never root someone else's phone and not be around that person. There is upkeep. I use to get my cousin's upgrades and give him my phone so I could upgrade every yr. Opposite yearly upgrade of me. I gave him a rooted/romed phone from the previous yr , but I would keep up with his and mine and do his rom and upgrade mods and troubleshoot it...? I like to push every phone to it's limit of what the chip can handle. Sometimes it was a lot, spending 5 hrs setting up a phone pushing the chip with overclocking, other mods, undervolting and having to wipe and redo everything over and over cause of bootloops. Not so much upkeep now though with the n8. If the bootloader gets unlocked, well awesome, and I'm down to flash away. But if it doesn't, oh well. I'm fine with the freezing apps, Samsung theme store plus other apk theme files floating around xda, poweramp with high res through aux, and using helium as a backup.
Anyways good luck and welcome to xda
Well said, rooting is something you must do by yourself

What to know before buying used note 8 specially for rooting and ulocking bootloader?

Hi, I recently bought a sony xperia z5 which i saw later that its bootlaoder cannot be unlocked. Now i am planing to go with samsung note 8 (used one) so i just wanted to know what model number should i buy ( I am in india ) or what should i check before buying note 8? which can be rooted and unlock bootloader too ( i am planing to buy it from dubai)
Please suggest Thanks.
The best would be, that you start looking in the appropriate Note 8 sub forums or use the xda search function or use Google search. It won't harm you if you educate yourself a bit on this matter. The phone is 10 months old now, plenty of info out there.

you must buy exynos for root.
Basically for model numbers... anything that ISNT N950U or N950U1 model numbers. So ones that work are: N950F/FD N950N N9500(there might be others but as long as its not N950U or N950U1 it should be fine.

Don'r buy a phone with snapdragon if you want custom rom. I don't care for custom roms because Note 8 is already strong so I bought SD Version for gamecube/wii emulation.

And
In other words, No snapdragon can be rooted (Am I right?)

Yep any SM-N950F and SM-N950F/DS and SM-N950N are exynos and have bootloaders unlocked
The snapdragons from USA/Canada SM-N950U and SM-N950U1 and SM-N950W are bootloader Locked. But can be rooted but this is a huge but if your on bootloader v4 and up you CAN NOT root your phone.
Bootloader v3 and below CAN BE rooted. But no twrp recovery.
But there are snapdragons that have unlock bootloaders SM-N9500 which comes from China and Hong Kong.

Something i don't see many people talk about but i regret myself doing.
If you are looking for the dual sim option it is possible to convert SM-N950F to dual sim or just buy a SM-N950FD.
But if you are trying to mod/convert SM-N950F to dual sim it is easier to do it with knox 0, trying to do it with knox 1 will get you into more troubles. I regret triping knox before converting to my note 8 into dual sim as i have brought the equipment and it doesn't work with knox 1. Modding this phone is a nightmare with binary 4 (SM-N950F), 7 day oem unlock wait every flash/factory reset. The date change to unlock may not always work due to patch.
Personally i think this is a great phone but is a nightmare to work with. If your interested in intensive modding with this phone may not be for u.

The 7 day timer has a workaround to skip the waiting period (posted as a sticky here), as well as a fix that can be flashed but it also now included in most custom roms. Aside from that people shouldn't have any issues rooting or modding the Exynos variants.
Trying to convert a single sim phone to dual sim would require copying the imei which is illegal. That type of modding isn't supposed to be easy or encouraged, by design.

Granted, people can/should do their research before posting questions that have been answered many times over. Or easily searchable. There is nothing wrong with asking a question(s) pertaining to their individual circumstance. It's not just as simple as "educating" themselves when they are asking other's opinions and validating the information they have come across. This site is not a Wikipedia... It's also a community where people can go looking for help or advice. Your response neither helps or adds anything to this subject. There are people out there who don't even try or make an attempt to search before posting questions that have been asked a million times over. I don't feel that this is one of those posts. As for the "community" part I mentioned earlier, we are community that "should" be helping inform and educate people. I know the site has grown a lot over the years in popularity, increasing the number of lazy users making redundant and unnecessary threads. This too sadly has increased the amount of unhelpful, rude and egocentric users. I wish you could have been a little more constructive in your reply. Or, even if sarcastically, added some kind of relevant help. If only just to help any future users that don't even try before creating those unnecessary threads you/I see all the time.
