I have recently purchased this phone via swappa and haven't had any issues prior to this and that has been three weeks (other than a light leak).
The issue that is happening is the LCD will not turn on. When the phone is unlocked via knock on or power button you can move your finger over where the lock circle would be and feel the vibrations showing that it does register the touch. Then usually I would just hold the power button till it rebooted and this would sometimes fix the problem, on a side note the boot LG logo and boot animation do not show up during this time simply the lock screen would randomly appear.
That is problem, now on to what I tried to fix it. I have put on an entirely different rom and the problem persists, I have also flashed a different kernel on the stock rom with no avail. I at first thought it could be due to a faulty proximity sensor, but the last time the screen was on I checked it with sensor box. One way I have been able to reproduce the problem is after locking it putting it in my pocket and waiting around five minutes, this then will make it so the LCD does not turn on ( Which makes it seem like it has something to do with deep sleep). Also something I just found since I was actually able to find the power off button, the screen also won't turn on when the phone is off and plugged into the charger (this makes it seem like hardware issue). It seems like as long as I keep the phone from going to deep sleep the LCD will turn back on.
Some of this makes it seem like a software issue other things make it seem like a hardware issue. I just was wondering if anyone had any ideas or if I need to buy a new screen, if the mobo is bad, or if I could fix this with software. Any and all ideas are welcome.
Thank you all in advance.
It appears that ambient display does not work when your screen lock setting is set to None.
I was showing a mate my Nexus 6 yesterday and started playing with a few settings. I noticed that all of a sudden my ambient display stopped working. I did some testing this morning and finally worked it out that when the screen lock setting is set to None, ambient display does not activate. Any notifications that come through stop appearing on the screen. Setting the screen lock setting to anything other than None ensures ambient display works once again.
1. Is this a known feature / situation for the N6 ?
2. Is anyone else experiencing the same behavior or is it just me ?
1. if you dont have a lockscreen then it cant show you notifications on it. duh, lol.
2. we all have known about this since before lollipop came out.
1. I see no reason why a notification could not be shown on the screen using ambient display even if I don't have a lock screen. It is not like I have actually turned the screen on yet.
2. And yet, when I tried searching for an answer to why my ambient display wasn't working, I found no mention of it at all, not in XDA or the web in general.
Thanks for clearing it up for me, it is clearly a feature of the phone.

if you dont have a lockscreen, then it has nothing to show the incoming message on. if no lockscreen, then it would just show in the status bar.
I understand your point simms22, but I think you may be missing mine. Does it have to be the lock screen that the notification is shown on when it arrives.
For example, msg arrive, screen turns on to show msg. If I do nothing then the screen turns off. If I haven't interacted with the screen, does the notification really need the lock screen to be displayed? I guess that I'm just not convinced that the lock screen is needed to display notifications when I pick my phone up, ie before I touch the screen. If I then interact with a notification then perform the interaction, but if I touch a part of the screen where is no notification, open the device.
The above would be mute if I pick the device up and press the power button to open the home screen.
I guess I look at things a little different, I design systems and interfaces for a living for the Dept of Defence.
I have found that the ambient display does not always activate when I pick the phone up, I'd say its about 90% reliable, have u found the same ?

yea, the way the code is written, there needs to be a lock screen to be displayed. i dont really use it anymore, but i found it to be around 90% as well.
Just to re-iterate, Ambient display is displaying the Lockscreen notifications, not SystemUI notifications, so to show the lockscreen notifications, Lockscreen must be on.

I totally agree. I upgraded from my 2013 Moto X, with Moto DIsplay, to the N6. I NEVER used a lock screen on the Motox, and enjoyed being able to just glance at the phone to know what was incoming.. its quite annoying that I can no longer get my notifications to show up on my screen without turning the phone on, and pulling the shade down. I'm on the computer all day, and have my phone setup next to me and use it to get a quick view of incoming work emails, with out taking my hands off the keyboard, or even stop typing for that matter.
If I would have known that the N6 was unable to work in this matter I would not have gotten it. I would have gone with the Moto X 2 instead.
Hi guys. Do you know any, preferably minimalistic, screen lock app that is compatible with ambient display? Have tried my fav Zui Locker with no luck.

I dont think it works with any.
That's what I was afraid of. Sticking with stock locker then since I love the new feature.
Sent from my Nexus 6 using XDA Free mobile app
Since I had a replacement for my bootlooped LG G4 H811. After recieving my refurb device I had this problem with double Tap to Wake and the view Glance feature. What really frustrate me is now it will or will not wake with double taping many times, view glance wont work but what is worst. Since probably the sensor is broken it will wake up randomly just laying on the table and any random touch or swipe on the screen would wake it. So battery usually drain while it will just turn on in my pocket.
I'm soooo sad and gave up after testing I can only just confirm it is a faulty Hardware.
My warranty is out. I really don't want to go through it again.( I might get a more faulty device ).
What i really need help with now is : How to disable all features that has any connection to waking the device or any other action that interacts with the screen while off?
I already have turned off the double tap feature using the quickshortcutmaker but still glance view feature is still on which is probably the reason for it to still wake up on the same conditions mentioned up.
I had tried CM ROMs while it only support double tap to wake disabling it from settings will save it from waking up.
But what I need is to fix the problem while on the stock software. For many reasons like having the LG stock Camera App. and a stable OS.
I have limited knowledge, but ithink i need to change settings in the firmware or maybe the kernel . Maybe using Xposed. but I really have no idea how to use any.
Please someone help me. I will really appreciate it.
I have the regular S10 and noticed that the proximity sensor doesn't seem to be working for AOD. Based on some quick searching around a few sites that appears to be a global issue. So as of now if I cover the front sensor or put my phone face down AOD continues to stay on screen. I assume that should turn the screen off though?
The other issue I found is with the Edge Lighting. I have it set to Always show. But it won't show the Lighting when my screen is off. I doesn't matter if I have AOD on or off. I can hear notification sounds but my screen will just stay off.
Is anyone else having these issues? Any thoughts or suggestions?
Both issues are known, but Samsung still didn't respond to them.
The proximity issue is a really annoying bug apparently, I often find it very hard to listen to WhatsApp Voice notes since the Screen just won't turn off the first 3-4 seconds. It's the same with regular phone calls, my screen only goes off after pressing the S10 really hard against my ear.
And no, I don't get edge lighting as well when my screen is off even I turned everything on. I hope samsung will fix these issues asap.
Thanks for the reply and info. I really hope Samsung fixes these issues soon. They are pretty big bugs in my opinion.
Same issues here and it also results in insane battery drain since the display turns on in pocket.
I figured it would be best to report it so they feel the heat so i called Samsung support here in Sweden today, the guy i spoke to thought it might be software error and if that's the case a fix will be released soon enough.
Hi
I'm in the UK and I recently bought an LG V40 128Gb Korean version - LM-V409N on Android 9/Pie.
There are a couple of things about it that are really annoying and I wanted to know if they are LG V40 features or bugs?
1. Screen goes black when making a phone call
When I use the phone dialler to make a call I type in the numbers and press the phone icon to make the call.
As soon as I press the phone icon the screen goes black and I have to press the physical unlock button on the right of the phone to be able to see the screen again and all the in-call options like 'dialpad', 'speaker' or 'end' call.
2. 'Always-On' display turns off in a dim light
I have the 'Always-On' (AO) display turned on in my settings, in my case it's just set to be the standard digital clock.
If I'm in a well lit area and lock the screen the AO display works as it should, however, if I'm in a dimly lit area and lock the screen the AO display does not come on.
Also, if I move between a well lit and dimly lit area the AO display comes on in the well lit area and turns off when I move into the dimly lit area.
Just to confirm, I'm not pressing anything on the phone during this time.
Finally, if I'm in a well lit area and cover the top of the phone with my hand (to mimick it going into my pocket) the AO display goes off when I cover the top of the phone and immediately comes back on when I uncover the top of the phone.
I can repeat both the above issues without there being a phone case on the phone potentially blocking a sensor and also the screen has been cleaned so I don't think any sensors are being affected by grease or dirt.
Both these issues are really annoying so could anyone confirm if these are intended features on all LG V40's or just bugs on mine?
Or any other info/ideas please?
Thanks
Yeah, the issue of the screen going black is a battery saving feature. There may be a work around utilizing the battery optimization exclusions in the Settings. There also is an app that I have seen suggested to alleviate this issue. As I don't use the AOD feature I can not advise a remedy.

Hi, thanks for the suggestion. I've turned off all the battery saving features/options but I still can't get rid of either of those features/bugs?
Can anyone else with an LG V40 confirm if they can reproduce either of these features/bugs?
After further digging around, I now think these issues are caused by faulty hardware on my V40.
I downloaded an app called 'Sensor Box for Android' from the Play Store which allowed me to test all the phone's sensors (accelerometer, light, proximity etc).
When I tested the proximity sensor it is not working/responding, so I believe that these issues are probably caused by the faulty proximity sensor.
