Just a quick question- I have a Captivate that will charge when plugged in via USB but there is no data connection. The phone doesnt recognize that its plugged in to a computer, and therefore despite being able to boot into download and recovery mode, I cannot use ODIN to do anything. Clockwork wont work either due being on 2.2.
Ive read some other threads where most concluded it is more or less a hardware failure. Im coming to that conclusion myself, but wanted to check with you guys first. The audio jack did the same thing for a couple days-- it wouldn't work when plugged in. It did come back on its own, though Im not sure why.
Im running Cognition 2.2beta3, and cannot flash back to a stock rom nor to any other rom due to the lack of being able to use ODIN.
Is there any other way to flash back without ODIN? Also, if this is indeed a hardware failure- how can I go about getting it fixed? I traded for it on craigslist for an iPhone 4 so I didnt get it direct from AT&T. It did work for the first couple months.
Thanks in advance for your help!
Do you have USB debugging enabled (Settings-Applications-Development)?
If so, you won't get the connection choice screen when you plug in your USB. You can either disconnect USB debugging to get the choice screen, or leave USB debugging enabled and click on the "Select to copy files" choice in notifications.
I have tried with USB debugging on and off, and in various USB modes. None work, as the Captivate doesnt even acknowledge theres a data connection that has been made.
It worked in the past in all modes... debugging with the option to mount the drive, mass storage, Kies, and the media mode. No dice at the moment. Tried a hard reset today... nothing.
Looks like it could be a hardware issue-- just weird as the audio jack had the same issue and seemed to (randomly) resolve itself. Thanks for the suggestion! Any other ideas?

I had the exact same issue as you few days ago. One forum member recommended to me to uninstall the Samsung USB driver and reinstalling it again. It worked as soon as I did this. You should give it a try.
I had a similar issue when performing a master clear and flashing JI6. I am on windows 7, and I noticed that a different driver is needed to use Odin in download mode. I had been sideloading apps as well as transferring files with the stock driver from samsung, but my computer still wouldnt recognize the phone when in download mode. The solution was quite simple, when entering download mode my computer gave me the "driver not found" messege. I just let Windows Update find the right one for me (not sure if its generic or not) and everything worked fine after that. Hope this was relevant to your issue.
And I guess you can't do the phone off, open Odin, plug in USB with vol up/down pressed, right?
Not sure if this will help, but I bought a second USB cable to carry in my laptop case. If I use it I can charge the phone but cannot connect it to a PC. If I use the one that came with the phone it works fine.
I have actually tried some other cables and they have issues too. They all have a larger cable housing towards the end that plugs into the phone, where the one that comes with the phone is slimmer.
A friend at work as a Fascinate and he has the same issue, we suspect that the increased size is keeping the usb from connecting all the way in the phone.
Ive tried different computers and different cables, as well as different drivers. Ive used 64bit systems and 32bit systems... XP and Vista.
The phone itself goes into download mode, though I have to go through the terminal and use 'reboot download'. I cant use command line on the computer as it doesnt find the device... the phone never is identified to it. It just charges.
Is there any way to perform the commands that ODIN does without actually using ODIN? If nothing else, Id like to flash back to JF6 and be able to use the OTA updates. At this point, Im stuck till clockwordmod works with 2.2.
I experienced the same thing. My Captivate would charge, but it couldn't connect to any of three computers (WinXP w/drivers, Mac OS X, and Linux) with either of two micro usb cables I had. I would always get a USB error in some form.
I was on cog 2.1, and was able to roll back to the JH7 OTA update without ODIN. Afterward I brought it to an ATT Tech Center and convinced them it was a hardware failure.
I got a warranty replacement, and it didn't work either.
It turned out to be bad micro usb cables. One was the original Samsung cable, but it was loose, there was plenty of play and wiggle in the sockets of both phones.
The best micro usb cable I've found is from a Kindle. It has a a larger plastic base than the stock from Samsung, but critically it has a longer connector. There's a solid click when connected and absolutely no play or wiggle possible. It works every time.
I don't know if you can restore from 2.2 to JH7 without ODIN. Now that we have 2e Recovery on Froyo (in Cog 2.2 BETA6), could you use Clockwork Mod (Rom Manager) to flash designgear's JH7 OTA ROM?
Try some alternate micro USB cables, you might be surprised!
Im having the same issue, was there any resolution to this from the OP??
I suspect hardware also, and Ive got another Micro USB on order from Amazon and will prob buy one from a store tomorrow also.
the stock cable is horrible, I bought a nice charger the other day and it has a nice click and stay, and since I plugged it in to the new charger it no longer shows up on any computer with the stock cable. Im wondering if the new charger with a tad larger connector spread the connectors just a tad too far for the stock cord.
I tried everything as well, I hard rebooted, put into recovery mode and even deleted all my user data to try and see if there was some software that was blinding the computer to the connection... no luck
Ill let you know what I find.
Same issue here. Has anyone had any luck with a new usb cable? Luckily, I can transfer files from my computer via bluetooth for now, but it takes forever!
The Story:
So I just upgraded my relic PowerMac G5 tower to one of the brand new 27-inch iMacs. My Captivate refuses to mount when plugged into any USB port on the back of the iMac. Yes, USB debugging is on. Yes, I pushed the button to mount the phone. The computer just refused to recognize it. The phone DID, however, start charging immediately. So it was pulling power, but not mounting at all.
Only major differences I could think of were the processor (G5 PowerPc to Intel Core i7), OS (Leopard to Snow Leopard), and that I'm using FileVault this time around. I did some searches to see if there were any known issues, but couldn't find any since the new iMacs came out a few weeks ago.
I know Adam Outler has been using his Captivate with Snow Leopard, so I tried turning off File Vault. Made no difference. I also tried plugging in my Nikon D3100 and my old iPod classic into the computer. The camera did not mount, but the iPod did. Luckily, the camera has a HDSD card, which plugs directly into the iMac. But I still couldn't get the phone to connect.
Just for a laugh, I plugged the phone into my ancient USB 1.0 hub. Damn thing mounted right up. WTF? I know USB 1 isn't going to cut it speedwise, so I got a USB 2.0 hub and tried it. Again, mounted like a champ. Ran adb reboot recovery from Windows (through Parallels), and it worked.
Turns out the camera just doesn't mount for any Macs (might explain why it didn't come with a USB cable). But the phone is still a mystery.
Question 1: Is this a power thing? Could it even be possible that my Captivate needs more power to mount than my iPod Classic (which has a hard drive, not flash memory)?
Question 2: Does anyone have any idea why this occurs? Is there some setting that I don't know about that controls what mounts and what doesn't?
Thanks for any thoughts on this,
kk
do u have the captivate drivers??? my mac hooks up my captivate all the time... i have teh 21 inch model tho not the 27 but yea drivers, usb debugging and device set to mass storage...
There are no drivers for Mac. I do have the proper drivers for PC (through parallels).
Yes, I have the phone set to both Mass Storage and USB debugging.
The weird thing is that I can mount the phone if I plug it into the USB hub...but NOT the USB ports ON the computer itself. If I plug in the phone to the computer directly and select Mount, neither the Mac nor PC side see it.
The trouble with the hub (USB 2) is it's SLOOOOWWWWW. I tried to copy my Titanium Backup folder to the Mac through the hub and it copies really slow then keeps cancelling out. Right now I'm transferring it via Bluetooth...and it's painfully freaking slow, too.
Anyone else have this problem? It's one of the brand new iMacs just released in May. It's killing me.
[solved] New iMac Weirdness
Figured it out.
Believe it or not, it's the cable (yes, the Samsung cable that came with the phone). I used the Motorola cable for my wife's Bravo and the computer recognized the phone right away.
My Samsung cable worked just fine with my G5 tower, but not the new iMac. I'm still wildly perplexed why it would mount through the 7-port USB hub, but not the computer itself.
Doesn't matter now, though. The Motorola cable works just fine.
The phone charges fine when plugged into the usb port, but I get usb device not recognized errors. It doesn't even popup to install any drivers.
I've tried installing the motorola drivers manually, but that didn't work either. I'm using the cable that came with my lg revolution as verizon said that would work just fine for the bionic. It does, but just for charging not managing the sdcard, etc.
When you plug it in, pull your status bar down, then select your USB mode. Make sure you don't have it set on charge only.
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using XDA
There is no usb notification on the pull down bar for some reason. Not even toggles for wifi, bluetooth, etc on the pull down bar.
Verizon is sending a bionic cable =/.
Check to make sure that your usb ports are working, my laptop shorted out all its usb ports at once while my bionic was plugged in. Also make sure that the cord is plugged in correctly to your phone and computer
If its charging but doesnt show anything in the pulldown, either your USB ports arent running correctly or the cord isn't supported for usb transfers.
I am having the same issue with my wife's phone. We both have Bionics and I have tried both cables on both PCs, mine works flawlessly on all, but her's will not detect a USB connection except to charge. Plugging the USB cable in shows battery charging but will not prompt for USB mode.
When Windows detects the device the driver install fails saying "Device unplugged"
Having usb debugging checked under apps can cause similar problems also.
I have to select Turn on usb storage. then unplug the cable and plug it in again. selecting turn on storage again usually does the trick.
This is on AOKP SELFKANG roms. YMMV
Have tried unticking USB Debugging, did not resolve issue.
Unable to toggle USB Storage as the phone does not detect and prompt when plugged in. Has worked previously, just stopped.
Just got the cable Verizon sent me, it's not even working either. I get no prompt to enable usb, I've tried usb debugging on and off, tried every port on my computer, this cable is the only thing that will not work in any port, the ports are good since I have other things in the same ones I've tried.
Now motorola is sending me a motorola cable after making me do a factory reset to test the one Verizon sent me -_-. God, I'm getting tired of reinstalling/setting up everything. There's no way to backup, etc without being rooted is there?
Let us know if the Motorola cable fixes it.
unfortunately, no you can't back up your phone w/o it being rooted.
that sucks about the cable, I would be all over VZW sending you a new phone if the cable from Moto doesn't work. It should be covered under the hardware warranty and should only cost you shipping.
have you tried either cable on a different computer altogether?
I had this very same problem on my samsung Captivate and then again on a brand new LG Thrill. they had worked fine connecting to W7 ultimate. then one day nothing. got the USB failed error. no USB connect option on the top bar. got the LG replaced last week. hooks up fine just like the last one.
Moto cable, 1st plugin and it works fine -_-.
at least it is working now, makes no sense why some of these devices can use literally any micro usb cable you can find (mine is this case) and others you HAVE to use the Moto cable or nothing will work.
That makes so little sense. I have two Motorola cables, the ones that came with the phone, and neither of them are working with my wife's phone.
from my Experience, Only the stock Bionic Cable works right. Others dont charge as fast and wont let me mount to pc. Not sure why. Guessing maybe the Bionic cable is set to higher frequencies since its a Dual core phone?
Well, as an old RF engineer I will make a guess. I recall folks saying the inside two pins carry the data. The data rate is certainly high enough to cause problems if the cable is made wrong. I will look in my old test equipment pile and see if I have a way of checking the cables I have.
I do not have a Motorola cable to test, but I do have cables from VZ that do not work. I may be able to check the data waveform in the time domain and see what it looks like (amplitude, slope, and shape). A TDR would be nice, anybody have one?
Uninstalling usb devices might help
I had the same issue with my bionic. Before the bionic I had the OG Droid, the X, and 2 X2's. So I had a plethora of seemingly identical OEM moto cables. I still couldn't say which one came with the bionic. That said, none of the cables worked consistently. I had the best luck uninstalling everything USB in device manager on my pc.
Go to start, right click on "computer", and then click on manage.
In the window that opens, on the left side under system tools click on device manager.
Then in the right side of the window navigate to USB controllers and expand.
Uninstall everything that is listed, but don't delete drivers if prompted.
After everything has been deleted, right click on computer at the top of the window and scan for changes.
This will reinstall everything and clear out any errors on the bus.
From there I have had mixed results depending on whether I had the phone connected when I rescaned for new devices. Sometimes it would work if I had the bionic connected and sometimes it wouldn't work unless I waited until all of the USB devices reinstalled and then connected the bionic.
Another thing that seemed to help was to unmount the sd card on the bionic settings>storage, and then remount.
Again, nothing worked consistently except replacing my bionic with a rezound.
OK, I have finally been able to get my Bionic to work. And the truth is, there was nothing wrong with the Bionic!
I asked VZ to send me a data cable, after two tries I still didn't have one. So I called Motorola and they sent me a data cable, the cable number is: SKN6378A.
Worked like a charm.
I think I know why this is happening. From my conversation with VZ customer support I can tell the cable list is not descriptive enough to help them make the correct selection.
Yes the data cable that came with the LG Revolution would not work on the bionic, also the new cable has a larger diameter.
Like in the topic. My pc can't seem to notice my HTC one phone. Not at all.
Some details:
PC - Laptop Lenovo Y580
Operating system - Windows 8.1 64 bit
Android - 5.0.2 I think (Lollipop)
My phone notices the cable (asks for internet tethering etc.) but I don't see it anywhere in pc's Device Manager (neither does HTC Sync Manager).
I've tried numerous things. I installed HTC Sync Manager, I've installed HTC drivers separately, reinstalled generic USB driver and drivers for USB 3.0, changed cable, changed port to another USB 2.0, change to USB 3.0, checked if it works on friend's pc (nope), reinstalled almost any of above mentioned things witt antivirus disabled, with firewall disabled, with almost anything that can be disabled. Nothing. It's not that case of wrong driver. My pc don't see this phone at all.
To be honest I'm tired. Like really tired. I've spent all free time I could find last week trying to somehow make it work. With no effect whatsoever. I don't see even slice of progress (noticing SOMETHING in device manager would be nice). I would love to see some way to analise this. I'm getting closer and closer to just buying new phone. Even though I don't want one, but I can't do any testing with this device.
EDIT: Few things I've remembered about my tries: I've tried both USB debugging on and off, and I've also already done factor reset of the phone - to no effect obviously.
When connected to pc, phone can be charged, but PC doesn't react in any way (no "USB connected", popping up HTC Sync Manager or "Media device connected" info).
I'll appreciate any help. Especially if it manages to change something in my situation.
Best regards,
Hisuu

When you plug in your phone to the computer do you get the following:
USB Connected
HTC Sync Manager
Media device [MTP] connected
Can you charge your phone while connected to the computer or do you have to use the wall charger to charge your phone? If you don't see the programs listed above, it sounds like a hardware issue with the USB port on your phone.

Yes, I can charge phone when connected to PC.
And as I mentioned phone actually notices it's connected to something, and asks what mode to enter (USB tethering, smart network sharing etc.). But it also seems... kinda dodgy. Sometimes phone doesn't react, I have to reconnect or even restart it. Sometimes "USB connected, Tap to change settings" stays... even after I have already disconnected it .
Few things I've remembered about my tries: I've tried both USB debugging on and off, and I've also already done factor reset of the phone - to no effect obviously. (I'll add this info to 1st post to gather info in one place).
Any other ideas?
This topic is my last resort, because I'm out of ideas and start leaning to buying new phone just for testing purposes (either Samsung Galaxy S3 or Nexus4 I guess).

start from scratch: Uninstall HTC sync and all the drivers you have tried. Then install HTC drivers only (not the generic drivers) or install HTC sync and uninstall it but keep the drivers installed (the idea is to have the driver installed but not HTC Sync, we don't want Sync to interact with the phone).
Try another USB cable but make sure its Data enabled (not only a charging cable). Some cheap cables are for charging only, no data connection.
Try another USB port, use 2.0 usb ports, do not use any external usb hub, use th eport directly on your motherboard (at the back of your computer).
Try with another computer
Clean your phone usb port using a cotton swab with some isotropic alcohol and then apply (spray) a light coat of electrical enhancer on your usb port (see your local electronic supplier or even some hardware stores)

Tried other cables (data enabled, they were from different phones), as well as different USB ports (both 2.0 and 3.0). Also tried another pc (no luck).
Uninstalled HTC Sync and drivers so many times I can't count it ;]
I'll try to clean the port and maybe use motherboard on friend's pc (on his machine I've only used front panel). Hopefully something works. Thanks for your input, I appreciate it.
I have installed all drivers i could fine. Whenever i plug the watch into my pc it doesn't even make the chime sound, nor does the device show up in device manager.
Can someone please help me, i just got my watch two days ago and would like to enable more cores because mines quite laggy on android wear 2.0.
If you have enabeld USB Debugging ?
This you can do in the Developers Options.
If you dont see Developers Options under SETTINGs then you must first enable the Developer Options...
To do this ...
Go to SETTINGS there in Devices Info and then TAP 7 times at Buildnumber... after this go back to Settings and you see the Developers Options and there you can enable USB Debugging
Sorry for my bad english...
i have already done that also. ive tried about everything i can fine. the dock charges the watch just fine, i have also tried different usb cords. is there any way to adb over wifi?

Hey did you found any solution?
I am on the same boat, the watch can charge and works (laggy) fine, but I am unable to let it be recognize in any way.
I tried same USB cord with several phones and it's ok, but the watch cannot be in any way recognized...
Someone please help us out lmao, the watch is so damn laggy and battery is awful.
I managed to do adb over wifi on the watch, but obivously this do not help with unlocking bootloader or anything in fastboot mode..

Did you all download and try the latest adb? I was having this same issue and turned out that once I updated the adb from the Android sdk, everything worked perfectly.
Uhm, I'll try thank you!
I downloaded all the driver I could get, even from official android.com site, but still the issue is same:
When I plug USB cable in the PC, I get no chime sound or request of anything: tried putting the watch on cradle in standard running mode, in fastboot mode, or in recovery or even powered off.
Same result: no reaction from PC at all.
Tried connecting various phones with same cable as the watch cradle usb cable, everytime the driver kick-in and phone is detected and system either use Google USB driver or ask for drivers.
I read somewhere on the internet that if phone is not connected with Wear app the smartwatch is not connected? But how to do that if the watch is in fastboot mode for unlocking?
Btw I also found that the system update was to version NXG47C and now the fastboot menĂ¹ is indicating that bootloader is version LENOK22b (secure boot is enabled in green and lock state is locked).
I am lost, even the SDK Android drivers did not change a thing, but more than anything else I do not get why PC do nothing (not even chime sound) when plugging in, my cradle is original and all things come from its box from 2014..I never tried before connection so I do not know if that was working before, but I am starting to think I need a new cradle maybe...

I have 2 cradles (that -same thing as you- work with anything else instantly) and since the NXG47C/LENOK22b combo simply do not work, so it seems it isn't a cradle problem. :crying:
Did you find anything else, codymamak?

Sadly, no.
I was just looking to cradle options but what you are reporting here now makes me believing that really, it's something else...but probably only LG knows why they did that...Only reason I can think of, is to make us users purchase newer models locking out features that make it still good with AW 2.0
It's really a pity.
My only other idea is to try with a different OS, as atm I got only Win 10 64bit Creator Update , but I could use a old HDD and try with a Win 7 32bit...but it's a LOOOOOOOOONG shot as from my experience at least the chime sound should be there...:crying:
Oh! Different OS - I forgot to mention it before, sorry: I tried on Windows 10 and MacOS.
Again, both work fine with other Android USB-debugging-active devices.
Sorry for adding more bad news to an already bad story.. :/
I would have guessed this, sadly.
Well, this means something needs to be found to reactivate the fastboot connection from the devs...meanwhile, I found that the old dev options to lower the scale of the animations improves a bit the slugginess of the watch...
Let's hope someone notices this thread and find a way to help us out, as I'm 100% no-dev...

Exactly same thing about me. USB plugged in and nothing happen, I tried win 10 OS and win7 - same problem - I also thought it is cradle problem, I almost bought a new one but after you wrote I dont't think I could help look we are stucked with AW2.0 and only thing is hope someone will find solution for this...
I am still stuck on this situation, no way to make watch try the USB connection.
Could it be possible that the latest update disabled the USB ADB?
Can someone confirm if the USB ADB files are still in the package?
And if not, is it possible to add them back using for example ADB over wifi, through maybe the original recovery if not possible with system running?

It is really anointing when some other users write about downgrade without problems. I'm thinking how is it possible, so everyone got the same version of AW2.0, it is really weird
I have 2.0 on gwr and my win 8 recognised them. I just installed adb usb drivers in same way as I did for Huatch: as Motorola android sooner composite adb interface.
Where do I find these famous motorola android sooner drivers for w7 x64?

Probably installed with drivers for motorola phone. The thing is I did not install this exact adb driver on purpose. I found it as I was trying out anything to make the watch connect to PC. It was a pure luck.
same thing happen to me!
I thought it was the cradle, I have 3 cradles, though all is not original, all fail. so I though the cradle only can charge. But I vaguely remember I once using it to flash, but my memory is not so reliable, so it can be the original or the 'not original'.
I can connect ADB using the bluetooth debug mode and go to fastboot, but even in fastboot mode, my pc still cannot detect the watch.
