I have galaxy S3 and it can only handle 10-bit video @ 480p
However, 720p 10-bit videos runs slow and laggy.
I wonder if Xperia Z can handle it without any slowdowns. Can some here test it ?

I should be able to answer your question in one hour. Stay tuned!
EDIT:
Unfortunately, when I tried to playback 720p 10bit video standard video player refused to play it and mxplayer opened it in software mode, refusing to use the H/W and H/W+ modes. In software mode I'd say it is watchable but is not perfectly smooth.
played a 10bit mkv through standard player, no lagg, smooth, while this was lagging using stock rom.. im now on tuddzrom , not sure if that fixed it lol but smooth nonetheless
Ok thanks guys
Galaxy S4 is supposed to have faster CPU than Xperia Z , so hope it will play it 10-bit 720p video smoothly.
5.1 channel mkv?
Guys,
On my Note II i can play 1080p mkv no problem, but the DDS (dolby digital 5.1) audio will not play.
I am switching to Z on Monday and am wondering if the 5.1 audio plays on mkv formats as well. Could u check that?
THanks!
1080p FLAC works flawless depending on the bitrate
720p no problems at all
Problem comes with 10bit. I think we all know that we want to watch our anime along the way. Most episodes are Hi10p.
I am not sure but how different is the Nexus 7 CPU against the Xperia Z? I can use the HW and HW+ decoder for 10bit episodes and they run smooth. But somehow the XZ refuses to use the HW/HW+ decoder. Might be, cause it's still new? No real HW support from MXPlayer yet?
I have no idea tbh.
Use MX Player's latest Test Build from here : https://sites.google.com/site/mxvpen/translation/test-build

Now my XZ (on 4.2.2 official ROM) can play 720p 10 bit anime very well

If we talk about Xperia Z hardware capabilities to decode 10-bit encoded video, the answer is no, it will never allow it. Currently there isn't any smartphone being able to decode 10-bit enconding.
On the other side, software decoding is based on how well the algorithm is developed rather than the device itself. It's pure CPU processing power + how optimized in the algorithm so that might change with time. And from what I've seen reading this post MX video player is working on it.

Don't know why everybody says that goog camera is so bad. It works just as well as any other.
Also, lcamera's 60fps mode is limited to Hammerhead, and requires custom hacked blobs to enable. Won't do it on Shamu.
OP:
No 60fps because you won't get anything useful out of it. It'll just suck your storage dry faster.

What do you mean nothing useful out of it? Suck your storage faster. We want 1080p 60frames. On our 64 gig storage phones. To take video with fast movement. I understand 2160p at 30 frames. Technology isn't there yet. But 1080p is and shame on Google for not enabling it.

If you can't notice the difference in framerate between 30 and 60 than you might want to visit a doctor.
The difference is extremely clear, and very desirable for smooth video and motion.
There is a reason that most video games run at 60 FPS instead of 30.
It looks smoother but if the bitrate stays the same, compression on each frame is higher which results in degraded picture quality particularly with complex movement/subjects.
60FPS is definitely useful as you can play it back at 30FPS and have 2:1 slow motion, etc.
Have to give it to Apple for their app as their 240fps mode is great for slow motion. Having the sound in there is also neat. Makes my little Jack Russell's growl sound like a lion's roar!
I use Cinema FV-5 and was surprised to see no 1080 60P mode available. It may be locked in the firmware even though the hardware is capable of higher frame rates.

I doubt it. The spec sheet for the camera sensor doesn't mention any resolution above 60 fps so the 120 fps slo-mo already available is probably as good as it gets.

See that's what I'm saying man !
We have the specs, then why SETTLE ?
I'm pretty sure the camera sensor bottlenecks the phone's ability to record at higher framefrates. The OnePlus 3/T uses the Sony IMX298 camera sensor, while phones like the Nexus 6P use the more powerful Sony IMX377 sensor that is actually designed to record at higher framerates at lower resolutions.
The specs sheet for the IMX298 sensor from Sony themselves state that the sensor can only achieve up to 120 fps at 720p. Even lowering the resolution during recording will not overcome the limitations of the sensor. This isn't the type of limitation that can be overcome with software. No other phone that I have seen using the Sony IMX298 sensor is able to record above 120 fps either.
When one designs a flagship phone at half the price of other flagships, some things must be cut. OnePlus simply gave priority to the CPU/RAM over the camera sensor.
---------- Post added at 03:22 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:02 PM ----------
BTW, the camera app in CR Droid may show a 240fps option, but has anyone confirmed that it actually works? Custom ROMs are often ported across multiple devices and I doubt developers will go through every settings menu in each app to see that has become redundant.
Nice and brief explanation. letme ask crdroid team..
So I've watched a few 4K videos, and I've watched a few 4K 60 frames per second videos, and both of those seem to work pretty well on this unlocked Note 8. However when I actually try to watch the HDR videos I get some pretty significant lag and choppiness, even when watching 1080p HDR. Does anybody else see this happening on their device?

No lag on this video but i dont see it being indicated as HDR just 1440P, I think we might need to add more details when testing. I suggest everyone who claims smooth/stuttery enable stats for nerds on youtube and make sure to report if the video format shows 2560x1440 ( as sometimes youtube will still display 1080p even if you have 1440p selected ) and then mention if its 1440p, 1440p HDR or 1440p60 HDR.
A good example is to try this video and make sure video format shows 2560x1440

There is a very minor stuttering especially if you are sensitive to it, I asked someone do a blind test on me on a random scene on the clip and 10/10 I was able to tell it correctly. The stuttering is not buffering related. But Im glad that you are not sensitive to the stuttering. I was able to also test this 4 snapdragon variants and 2 on exynos all of which had same results. I think this is a bug on the player as it only stutters when playing in full screen.

@Arnova8G2 starting this thread for Mi Max 2. Please feel free to edit the content.
i can warmheartedly recommend this website right here: https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera/
listing all current GCam ports from the most important devs in that area
At the moment, it looks like the Arnova8G2 ports are the most compatible ones with our Mi Max 2 phones. v1.2 doesnt have Portrait Mode but works flawlessly including HDR+ Enhanced and basically all Phone Model HDR+ modes. All v1.3 and v1.4 ports dont work well on our phones (lots of black screens). v1.5 beta works better and also includes a working Portrait Mode, however only "Nexus 6" Auto and "Pixel 2017 ZSL HDR no PD" Phone models work concerning HDR+, all others cause a black screen. Thus, HDR+ Enhanced is not available.
So its either v1.2 including HDR+ Enhanced due to lots of HDR+ phone models working properly, but without Portrait Mode
or
v1.5 including Portrait Mode but only with regular HDR+ due to just two phone modes working for HDR+
cheers!

It does not work when you try to make a video with the rear camera with the video stabilizer.

arnova8g2 v1.5 beta1, beta2 and stable all work fine, including all video resolutions back and front camera. be sure to set "nexus 6 auto" for config camera hdr+ and "nexus 6p" for model in settings.
rest of the settings i have detailed in the lineage os thread, it was post number...dont remember exactly, but it was somewhere 845-850 in that range

Hi. yes, I do have the configuration that you mention. from old versions, 1.3. to me the video gives me failure. in version 1.5. recording at 4k I have no problem. if under the resolution to 1080 recording at 30FPM / 60FPM to take advantage of the stabilization, I get an error. therefore I have it at 4k and no error. the rest works great for me. Keep investigating. I have the .21 version of xiaomi eu. The other scrubber app works for me.

ah yes, versions 1.3 and 1.4 are no good, video doesnt work there. stick to either 1.2 or 1.5.
as for sub 1080p with video stabilization, i think thats miui related, since another member posted something similar. i have no troubles at all with video recording on lineage os 14.1, no matter which resolution or camera is used. stabilization is always switched on btw.

Nope, with these settings you can only record video once, when you start recording another video, camera crashes. I'm on Los

nope, i an record as many video clips as i like in direct succession. be aware though that i have jpeg wuality set to 100% and dirty lens warning disabled. no idea if that makes any difference though. i also have back camera set to 4k and front to 1080p for video recording.
this is on arnova8g2 v1.5 stable btw.

ill check front video recording for you, give me a moment.
dont have magisk installed, using inbuilt privacy guard of lineage os for root access control.
edit: front camera video recording works as well, just recorded two clips right after each other without problems.

Also try to record 2 to 3 clips using rear camera on 1080p, and see if you face any error. BTW thanks for your timely replies

sure thing, gimme another moment.
recorded three clips one right after another, each at 1080p with 30fps and 60fps, respectively (total of 6 clips). no problems encountered.
have u given proper storage permission for the app? also, have u installed the modded media_profiles.xml file in system/etc for proper usage of slomo and 60fps? maybe one of those two is the culprit in your case...

Well given proper media storage but don't know what media profiles are you talking about, can you please tell me how to do that?

well im assuming you have root access, so:
- download the modded media_profiles.xml file as part of this zip package here: https://mega.nz/#!MKYyWaDL!zUzUivAblq9watfHBvFuCfhC0pBJMqgd6OalVSMLvHw
- unzip the package and overwrite the stock media_profiles.xml file in system/etc directory with the modded one
- set proper permissions of the new file to rw-r-r
- reboot
- test again and see if your issues are resolved
ull need a file manager with root access for that, im using es file explorer pro, for example.
