ADB to restore 2 button navigation - Google Pixel 4 XL Questions & Answers

Not sure if this is the right place for this but does anyone know if this adb command still works to restore 2 button nav now that the 4XL has been released?
adb shell cmd overlay enable com.android.internal.systemui.navbar.twobutton
I've been trying to use full gesture nav since I got my 4XL a few days ago and I hate it. Looking for any way possible to get the pill back.

If you go into settings on your Pixel and search for Navigation - you will see there is an option to turn off Gestures and use the old Navigation - I prefer that way much better too - can't get used to Gestures - at least you have the option to use it when you want and go back to the old way when you want.
Hope that helps.

That's the first place I went but the 4 XL only gives you the 3 button option and I don't want to go back to that either. Feels like a rock and a hard place.

I believe that Artem from Android Police stated that the adb command no longer works, I'll see if I can dig it up.

Thank you for this. I was so lost the first day with my Pixel 4 with those dang gestures, but started getting used to them. Lets see if I like now the old way back. :good:

Ok found issue with old navigation. Anybody know how to clear all apps? I have to swipe each one and don't see the clear all button.

Ah man, thanks for this! I've really been trying to get used to using the gestures, but I need a break! I have found for the most part the gestures work for most things, but for others it seems a bit buggy, so it's nice to have options and totally missed this setting to switch back and forth so thanks:good:

Man, same here, and I never have used gestures on any device. Worst of all, especially, was getting Recents to come up, but I've gotten used to it now so I'm sticking with it

[MOD] Smaller navigation bar [VZW]

** Disclaimer: Use at your own risk. Proceed at your own risk. I am not liable or responsible for anything. **
** Disclaimer 2: I don't own a Verizon G2, so while I know my tweaks work on AT&T and I made the same ones against Verizon framework files for these, I currently have no guarantee they work. **
Description:
I like my screen real-estate. Going from S4 -> G2 I was sad that despite the larger screen, I had *less* real estate because of the on-screen soft keys.
I know a lot of you use GMB Hide Soft Keys and it is a great app, however, I personally prefer to have an always-on, always-available set of navigation keys.
Enter this mod. It shrinks the nav bar down considerably, increasing screen real estate.

Thank you for taking the time to make this mod for the Verizon model.

Awesome! And works with the black bar, and recent mods!
That's awesome, I'm finally satisfied with the G2's screen. Thank you very much. :good:
Do you think this will work on tmobile version?
This looks great! Thank you.
Is there a way to hide the status bar at the top? Since we have the pulldown menu button I would like to hide the status bar entirely and free up that real estate.
thanks dude, works well! and confirmed it works with the black status bar mod

does not work, I have a bootloop brick with no adb sup[port and cant boot recovery...
OK
1. Turn device off by holding power key down until bootloop stops.
2. Hold power, down volume and where the home key would be.
3. choose yes factory reset, should take you back to recovery....

I know for a fact that this will not work on T-Mobile directly, the same tweak will, but it would have to be T-Mobile's file version.
You should be able to garner ADB access from the LG splash boot screen by holding Vol Down on boot, it won't go into recovery but it will lock up on the LG logo and should be recognized by your comp, at least it worked for me during testing.
Get a T-Mobile owner to send you framework-res.apk from /system/framework and replace yours and you should be good to go.

I'm actually using Nova Launcher, it has a few different Folder display options. You'll lose the ability to double-tap-screen-off on the homescreen, but you can still double-tap-screen-off on the status bar up top at any time to get the same result.

It shouldn't affect quick reply in any way. It is a relatively simple and unintrusive tweak, affecting a separate class file than what is involved with quick reply.
I don't know enough about how GMD works, but I know it is still quasi-beta and people can sometimes have weird interactions with untested UIs.
Cheers.

Thanks for that tidbit. I have actually been using Tasker to do it with Nova, but for people that don't have Tasker yet, and it's good to have options.

My Verizon G2 is rooted and has the OTA 11B software, so I haven't tried to get TWRP installed yet.
Is there any way to install one of these smaller navigation bars without flashing the zip via TWPR?
I tried the APK (renamed with as .apk), but they would not install.

One Hand Operation+. A gem!

This app comes with Samsung's Good Lock. I see very few people talking about it and actually knowing that it does even exist.
Give it a go! It allows you to bascially navigate your phone fully without any navigation bar. The main reason to use it over other similar apps is that this one obviously does not use any accessibility services. Besides, it is FREE.
You have 6 customisable swipe actions.
The swipe area itself can also be heavily customised to your taste.
Try it.
The swipe actions available.

I have tried basically all the similar apps on the Play Store, this one works the best after a week of testing: very responsive, never fails to trigger and works like a charm with the curved glass while feeling very natural.
Granted if you are not keen on side gestures, then this will not work for you.
The big draw is that, as mentioned, it does not require any accessibility service.
I agree that performance is better. I'm going to use OH+ for a while now. I really like the Good Lock apps.

Same here! These are the tiny details that make you choose one ecosytem over another.
I would argue OH+'s implementation of gestures suits tall phones with very little bottom chin better. Its more ergonomic.

I agree it's implementation is a lot better. It feels more natural to swipe from the side of the screen, especially on a tall screen. So much easier then trying to reposition your thumb to the bottom of the screen

Good Lock, especially One Hand Operation +, will get a lot of use if it comes bundled with Samsung phones.
OnePlus already has its own solution. Samsung needs to bundle these and integrate it in Samsung Experience.

Put the transparency to 0 so that you can see the swipe area. Once you are happy with where you want to position it and the size etc, you adjust the transparency.
Note that you have to swipe from the very edge, just like you do for the Edge Panels.
Hope it works for you.

You can install Navigation Gestures from xda-devlopers. It has a feature to hide the navigation bar in a way that no other app does. Then just don't enable the gesture functions for the app, then in theory your navigation bar should be completely gone and you can just use One Hand Operation+ without any of the other gestures or the navigation bar.

A combo of Onehand Operation+ and Navigation Gestures. Good idea!
Update: It appears you have to enable Accessibility Services even just to hide the Navigation bar using the xda app.
Defeats the purpose, the only reason i recommended the samsung app is because it does not need any Accessibility Services and hence there is no hit to performance at all.

Gesture navigation?

I've been using a OnePlus 6T and Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 regularly and have become very much so used to swiping to go home, back, recents, etc. In fact, picking up my old Pixel 2 XL feels like a step back in terms of usage.
I understand there are apps that can mimic the gestures, but they aren't always 100% and can sometimes cause issues (Fluid N.G. definitely doesn't work 100% of the time and can be clunky feeling). The native gestures found on OnePlus, Xiaomi, Huawei, all feel great since they were made for the device and what not.
Based on every bit of footage I've seen thus far on the Galaxy S10/S10+, there are navigation buttons by default. Does anyone know if Samsung has made any gesture navigation to use instead of the buttons? I never thought I'd get used to using gestures but now I can't go back.
Cheers!
Yep Samsung does. Slightly different then others, but basically swipe up on left side to go back, swipe up middle for home, and swipe up on right side to go to recent apps. That is provided you have the navigation orientation the way it's supposed to be with back button on left and recents on right. Swipe up and hold middle for Google assistant

Personally I am not a fan of the Samsung gestures and 3 swipe zones can be complicated if you use different hands at times. It is one of the cons I am considering for getting the S10 as I would have to install fluid if I got one
you can completely hide navigations buttons in android pie - samsung - and use gesture (swipe left, right up down)
i am using them and it was difficult at first and i still get the random misfire but is better as you get 100% screen no button bars
you can find this option in settings

No, it's stock button layout. You can enable the gestures if you so choose.
Talking about gesture, anyone know how to activate/how works the gesture to close an app?
I can see it on a few videos but can't replicate it for some reason? Are we suppose to swipe up a few times?

I'm not talking about the bottom swipe, I'm talking about apparently anywhere on the screen swipe.
i switched from iphone x to s10
and am using the samsung gestures + FluidNG , but limited the Fluid Gestures to only back from left and right parts of the screen the same as i do with the iphone , so now everything is good without the need for ROOT etc..
Try the Good Lock app from Samsung Galaxy Store. The app gathers all the enhancement software from Samsung in it. The one hand operation + uses gesture and is configurable.

How do I disable gestural nav and keep continued conversation?

Apparently Google won't let you use the old 3 button nav bar with continued conversation with the assistant... I found this article, think it will work?
Here's the command I'll execute in adb
adb shell cmd overlay disable com.android.internal.systemui.navbar.gestural
I'll enable lmt pie at that point

Let us know how it turns out.
It doesn't work with them disabled either. Nor if you disable the goog nav gestures and use an option from the market like Oneplus gestures. The new assistant seems to be tied into the stock nav gestures in some way. A real pisser because the Oneplus gestures work better than stock but then you lose the assistant. I've read this is because google wants to make sure the swipe to assistant isn't ditched and most wont want to go back to the old assistant.

yeah you're right, doesn't work it basically just does what I can already do in the settings by switching it over to the 3-button navbar.
What we need is some way to fake the system out to think gestural navigation is enabled when, in fact, it is eliminated.
Sorry man, I was all over that on release day. I've been hoping one of the smart people takes an interest and figures it out but I suspect it's buried on the proprietary side and were going to be out of luck until something changes.

Can't hide the Navigation bar/pill?

Hi guys.
Just bought a Pixel 4XL after coming from Samsung, and I have noticed that you can't hide the Navigation bar, or the pill so apps take up the whole screen and don't just square off at the bottom, is there anyway around this? I done some research and come across the "overscan" ADB command, but seems to be removed since Android 11 and no longer works.
This is my only gripe at the moment, it's driving me nuts looking at it, any ideas please?

Correct. I did think of rooting for this reason, but I am not sure if it removes my eSim, here in Australia it's a pain in the ass to get a new eSim profile downloaded to my phone if it deletes it.
