I have the OnePlus 7T. Rooted with magisk.
essentially, I am wondering if I will lose root if I perform a full factory reset. sometimes I find that is the easiest way to clear from the phone. Given that it is a pain in the ass to root that phone right now without TWRP access, would it be a loss of everything if I went to perform full factory reset?
if so, any advice on exactly how to do it or any special things to look out for? Thank you

No!
Magisk performs Root based on a modification to the boot image, which is only touched if you reinstall/format /system
With a simple factory reset, you will lose only the modules, which are in an image in the folder /data, and maybe Magisk Manager does not reinstall itself automatically and you need to install manually but will not lose the root

okay thanks. Sooner otherwise you would recommend just doing a regular, simple factory reset through the settings, system, erase all data function?

I always do it through TWRP, but I don't believe this method will cause some bug

Does anyone else have any experience with this? was going to try today just terrified of losing data etc

My school is implementing new security measures, and they're requiring that all university-owned devices are encrypted (they're using an app called AirWatch). My phone isn't required to be encrypted, but it seemed like a good idea . . . After encrypting, my phone is so slow that it's almost unusable (~30 seconds to open an email, for instance). I uninstalled the app, but I can't figure out how to decrypt.
My phone is rooted and I have Titanium Backup, so I am completely fine with wiping everything from my phone and reinstalling it all. I attempted to do a wipe data/factory reset from ClockworkMod Recovery v6.0.3.3, but it failed ("Error mounting /data!" and "Error mounting /sdcard/.android_secure!"). I reinstalled the CWM and tried to flash the recovery again but my phone can't seem to find the .zip file - maybe because it's encrypted?
Again, I am okay with losing all data on my phone, I just need to get rid of this encryption!!
I have S-OFF, CWM 6.0.3.3.
Thanks for any advice you can give me!

It sounds like running the RUU may fix your issue
**edit** http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2576995 Just download and run from your PC. it WILL wipe everything.
Thanks. I think I did this once before, but do you know if there's a way to do it on a Mac?
I tried it on an old PC and got the error message "Program too big to fit in memory" when I tried to relock the bootloader. Is my computer too late, or am I doing something wrong?

I am not familiar working in MAC, sorry. In theory you could dual boot windows on your Mac though. On a windows PC you need to install HTC sync first, none of this "PDA net" driver bull **** the tool kits try and tell you works. Then you need the android SDK so you can properly flash the stock recovery and relock your bootloader. Then just run the RUU.
As far as your "program too big" error this makes me wonder the hardware specs on your PC.

Did you encrypt using the stock encryption in the settings of the phone or by using an app?

I used an app called AirWatch that walked me through some process, but I'm not sure exactly how it was encrypted.
Have you tried to format the data partition instead of doing a wipe?

It appears that the encryption can be removed via AirWatch desktop application.
As for how? I have no idea friend.
If it is yours, you could break it, and have it replaced.
From what I was reading, you'll have more control and should be able to login online and decrypt

I contacted someone from my university and they said to use AirWatch's desktop management page. I tried to factory reset from there and nothing happened. Well, I think my phone is moving faster but it's still encrypted (and I still can't actually factory reset it). Very perplexing!

It said the factory reset message had been sent to my phone, and about 15 minutes later my phone restarted - still encrypted. Pretty anticlimactic. Now it no longer appears on the management page.
Yet the phone still shows as encrypted?
There are applications on windows (and MacOS) that will straight up wipe everything on any device. I know CCleaner will. Matter of finding the right program. It also depends on the encryption. But one question, if the app encrypted it, why can't it decrypt it? They didn't give you a key?

Hi everyone,
within the past 3 weeks I have rooted (with magisk), installed xposed, gcam 8g2v6, uninstalled xposed and everything seemed ok until then.
And afterwards I replaced the mediaprofiles.xml file and I began to see tons of errors related to whatsapp, camera apps, etc. and therefore had to make a factory reset through settings menu of the phone.
Now rooted again but even before the root or now neither the stock camera app or the other camera apps are shooting video or letting me choose resolution for video. I can only record on open camera app through activating camera2.api.
Really having a hard time on how to shoot video properly again. Whatever camera app I install to shoot video starts in a very low resolution mode like 640*480. Even the video settings in the stock camera app are not there. At what point did I mess things up and how can I restore to how things were? No problems with the photo mode/quality by the way. I am on 9.2.1.0 global.
Appreciate any help. thanks.
Having tried pretty much whatever I have found on the web and still no success. Pls help.

Thanks for the idea. However I am on global stable rom. And I already wiped and reset through phone menu once. No change.
I don't think that factory reset can revert the changes that root apps can do. Not the same thing...

Resetting the rom only resets the settings and states of the applications to their default values and thus behavior . But seems like that you changed something more - most probably some files are changed, which could not be reverted to the original state by factory reset. You have to flash the rom again. And will be better if you format the system partition before that.

Thanks. Do you mean I should reinstall the Global Factory rom externally through (TWRP or else software)???
If i do so, do I have to format the system partition and do I lose my IMEI?
Yes, reinstall with twrp. You will not lose your IMEI. It's not on system partition. If you have some doubt, flash official ROM with MiFlash. But my advise is use twrp. Deleting system partition is not mandatory, but make factory reset at least after flash.

There is any way to temporary root P10?
Not really...you can root the phone, do your things and unroot it. Use magisk for it, it's easy to use.
Thanks.
I wanted temporarily because I didn't want to do a factory reset but I will do it with magisk,

To install Magisk you need to unlock your bootloader, so there's no way to get away from factory reset if you want root.
Yeah I know...thanks
Hallo,
managing some different devices and run them mostly with custom ROMs, rooting was again and again a topic in this endeavour. During this course I've came accross so many resources but it isn't 100% clear for me. This is an attempt to get any uncertainties resolved.
Any input is welcome.
There are many explaining what rooting means, gaining administrative rights on the file system of your phone (in linux, root or superuser is the username of the master admin). With root access, you can install and uninstall anything you want on the phone. But resources what rooting actually does on modern Android are widely scattered around but I haven't found place yet where it all is well explained in one decent post. I've gone through some articles but still don't fully understand what it does and how can I hide later on as it certain apps won't run if they detect if a phone is rooted. These are my resources:

depending on the method and ROM, root related modification could be overridden when flashing. This is one of the reasons why I kicked off this thread. I want to outline it in more details (as soon as I have some spare hours)

So I just want to know if they root permanently using team viewer remote root. ?

Uninstall it should not be a problem, the su binary already in /system (system way) and in boot image (systemless way). But if you remove SuperSU from that app you will LOSE root!

It's because some devices play not good with Factory Reset with root. Like my ASUS ZF2, everytime I try to factory reset + root, the device lost boot.

OEM Unlock will allow your phone to root. If you are rooted and you disable this option, your phone will brick (as it will enable the device to check system signatures). I had this mistake and my SS phone said on reboot "Custom binary blocked by FRP lock"
The fix would be full stock ROM flash.

This is not true. Some device can still install OTA, but you must unroot. Else your phone might get hard bricked.

Yes, it's a permanent root. You can unroot if you want.
Hi!
I previously had rooted my S7 Edge with Super SU v2.79 years ago but now I want to switch to Magisk because I need to hide root from certain apps. Magisk fails to install saying:
! Boot image patched by unsupported programs
! Please restore to stock boot image.
Click to collapse
From here I read I can try unSU. But in my case it did not work. How exactly can I fix this now? As I understand I need to reflash some stock images? But what exactly is the minimum requirement? Just boot.img? Or system? Also if I don't want to loose my apps, data, config, can I flash them without loosing them? Or if not is it possible to hide root while still using SuperSU since I really don't want to lose my data/apps/config.
You get the info to restore the stock boot image, which is just the kernel image. As you are rooted right now, use a backup tool like Swift Backup (full version is paid) or Neo backup (FOSS) to backup all app data and apps and personal data in case something goes wrong. Backup that stuff to your PC of course, saving all data that was created by the backup app and your other stuff. Then flash stock kernel, test if all is good and stick to Magisk stable plus needed modules.
Next time please provide all system data like used (custom?) ROM and Android version. If you use a custom ROM you need to revert to the unrooted custom ROM kernel of course.
Thank you for your response!
I am not rooted currently as I uninstalled Super SU but I think I can install it back if needed. Will flashing stock kernel always cause app data to be lost? Or is there chance that it does not get touched? As for ROM I use stock android 7 rom. I am not sure where and if can I still find it.
I don't really trust backup because because previous attempts have ended up with boot loops and broken apps. If there is chance that that app data stays intact without backup then I might try it but if the process factory resets everything and then relies on restoring backup as one part of the process then for now I would try to come up with some other solution.
Also will it cause all the stock bloatware to come back or is the kernel separate from apps?

to back up use smart switch in pc, to install magisk is recommended to flash stock firmware first and instal magisk to avoid issues like bootloops
