repository of carrier-specfic OTA updates? - LG V40 Guides, News, & Discussion

Hello -- Noob question for new user of LG V40 ThinQ (I happen to be using a carrier unlocked LM-V405UA / ATT).
I know ATT has released new OTA updates.
In addition, I understand that carrier V40 variants (ATT/Tmobile/etc) prevent use of LG Bridge for updates.
I'm used to HTC world where folks collect and maintain the OTA updates for anyone to use (whether you have SIM or not). Even with bootloader locked, there should be way to deposit OTA on local storage and reboot in some manner where boot process will identify file and load?
Are the LG phones really this "difficult" (aside from bootloader unlock topics)?
thanks

[Q] Unlocked (bootloader) Moto-X to Developper

Hi,
I currently own and HTC One (from Rogers in Canada) that I converted to dev edition so I can get update faster from HTC (Rogers is taking forever to release updates). It works flawlessly after gaining S-OFF.
I'm now looking at getting a Moto-X (again from Rogers) and for the same reason would like to convert it so I can get OTA updates from Motorola instead of Rogers. I know I can unlock the bootloader on a Moto-X if it comes from Rogers but can I fully convert it the same way I did for my HTC.
I did a lot of reading/searching and can't find an answer
Thanks all
I don't know if S-OFF actually stops updates on HTC phones.
Unlocking the bootloader on Motorola phones does not stop OTA updates: if you modify recovery or the system files, it might prevent OTA updates, but just unlocking the bootloader doesn't have any effect on the functionality of the phone.
Unlocking the bootloader gives you the ability to change the phone to the point where it won't accept updates. By itself, though, it doesn't change anything.

Thanks for the reply but I was trying to understand if I will be able to received update from Motorola (instead of Rogers). I'm not looking at running custom roms, just want to run latest firmwares ASAP.
Thanks again

with unlocked bootloader you can always flash the latest releases of firmware, even leaks. There's no need to be dev edition if u already have unlocked bl.

I understand that, but since this will be my wife's phone it would be nice if she would be able to get automatic upgrades from Motorola. This is why I want to "convert" it.
Cheers
If you unlock the bootloader you can flash the retail/tmobile full flash on to the Rogers Moto X and you will get the same updates that the GSM developer edition does. You may lose Band 7 LTE(2600 Mhz) but that is unlikely to matter much as you will still get AWS LTE. You will get the same updates direct from Motorola that a developer and tmobile user will get.

System updates for unlocked phones?

I have ordered an unlocked Note 8 and will be using it on AT&T.
When it comes time for updating to Oreo from Nougat where will the update originate? If it is the AT&T server will I then be burdened with their bloatware?
Unlocked devices do not get carrier updates. Your update will come directly from Samsung. I am hoping that Samsung updates will come before Verizon, one of the main reasons I got the unlocked version.
the non-branded models get updates directly from Samsung
Unlocked Note 8 update
The link provided by samsung to read about the update mentions att which is why I got concerned about allowing it. I have at&t service but don't want their bloatware on my phone which us why I got the unlocked version. Can't post the URL because I can't remember my old acct info here so had to start over.

Is it possible my Sprint unlocked LG V40 Thinq gets lock if I cross flash it?

couple months ago I have bought an overstock LG V40 Thinq from ebay which is a Sprint and Network Unlocked version. I am currently using it on T-mobile and it works just fine other that VoLTE which doesn't work. As you all know Android Pie is not released by Sprint yet but T-mobile and US Unlocked versions got that update. So I am wondering, Is there a possibility that my phone gets locked to Sprint again if I cross flash it with US Unlocked version of Android Pie? Since I am not on Sprint, do you think that I may get the official update if I wait for a while? (I got couple security updates while I was on T-mobile network.) and if it updates over the air, is there a possibility to the phone to gets locked again?

Just got my LG V40. Is it better off to cross flash it? Can I do anything else to it?

So I just got my sprint V40, Model Number LM-V405UA
android version : 9
Android Security Patch: March 1st 2020
And the software version is : V405U20d
Are these all up to date on my model?

2nd question
What exactly is the benefit of cross flashing the phone with US unlocked KDZ or ATT Unlocked or any other KDZ?
What do you gain from doing it?
is there anything else I can do with my phone to improve it?
1) Yes.
2) & 3) More bands available to you/better compatibility for when you decide to leave Sprint for another carrier (make sure the phone is SIM unlocked first!), plus the ability to connect to more towers if you travel to other countries. Less Sprint bloatware.
4) Unlock bootloader and root device. Take full control of the tech you own!

I dont actually have sprint, I have Tracfone as my carrier and use the AT&T sim card
which KDZ would be best to use? I looked at LG Firmware and saw US Cellular but there's also the US unlocked one too
The only information i've seen about rooting and unlocking the bootloader is to contact someone that has a octoplus box

If you crossflash use the US unlocked.
Look here for unlocking the bootloader.
Once you've done that, rooting is as simple as using TWRP to load Magisk.

Get the US unlocked KDZ. I also had the Sprint model. Crossflashing to the US unlocked allowed me to use wifi calling and the additional bands for T-mobile.

Is it possible to unlock LG V40 T-Mobile US for use in UK?

Hello. I was iterested in getting a second-hand V40 which happens to be the US T-Mobile version. But i want to use it here in the UK. I've checked the specs and it seems to support all the band numbers which my carrier uses. But I have read that the T-Mobile V40s are somewhat restricted and it is not possible to root or crossflash. Does anyone know if it is possible to unlock for UK use? And if so, how?
Many thanks
What do you mean? Unlock is sum unlocking, root is root, cross flash is cross flash. Dont tell me you got the word unlock mixed up.
Rooting and crossflashing will not unlock the sim carrier for you to use as youll need to unlock before crossflashing. Also why not just go buy an unlocked variant as LG also has the US unlocked version. every manufacturer's unlocked version will always have more radio bands.
