Hi,
With my Pixel 4 XL, I am trying to update the system, but it always failed.
So I try via the recovery mode, but I am getting the famous android mascot which says "NO COMMAND".
I manage to get out of it and do a factory reset.
I do not update anything, no sim card, no wifi, no downloaded app, but still, I am getting NO COMMAND in the recovery mode.
How to fix that?
Cheers
When it shows that did you hold power and tap volume up?

Did you untick auto-reboot ?
If you did, your gear wont automatically reboot once the flash has finished.. once you confirm the flash has completed, simply manually reboot your gear into recovery mode & you will be welcomed by the TWRP logo.
The whole point of unticking the "auto-reboot" option is so it doesn't boot back into the android OS, otherwise the recovery will be overwritten with the default one.. I repeat you must manually reboot your gear into recovery mode by holding down the power button.

ok, I started it into the recovery and download menu right after i flashed the recovery, instead of rebooting to the normal android like i was, but when i choose recovery mode the screen turns off and stays like that until i hold down the power button, then it reboots to the normal gear android interface instead of showing the TWRP logo. am i doing something wrong??

I'm trying to remotely help a friend with a Nexus 6 stuck in a bootloop. The phone is new, just out of the box. He accepted an OTA update before doing anything else, so no USB debugging (or anything else) was set. Now it's stuck in a bootloop.
Is there a step by step guide available to allow flashing a factory image in this situation. Everything I find so far requires USB debugging to be set first. Or, are we talking brick? Returning the phone would be very difficult.

If I were your friend I would put the phone back in the box take it back to the store and demand a brand new one immediately that shouldn't be happening on the stock device

Unfortunately, he bought in the US and is now far outside the US. That's why returning would be difficult.
Dam. Can he boot to the bootloader.

He can do each of these steps but when it reboots after #6 it goes back to the dead robot and "no command"
1. With the phone powered off, press and hold the Volume Down button and the Power button at the same time until the device turns on. You will see the word "Start" with an arrow around it.
2. Press the Volume Down button twice to highlight "Recovery mode"
3. Press the Power button to restart into Recovery mode. You'll see an image of an Android robot with a red exclamation mark and the words "No command."
4. While holding down the Power button, press the Volume Up button.
5. Use the volume buttons to scroll to "wipe data/factory reset" and press the Power button to select it.
6. Scroll down to "Yes - erase all user data" and press the Power button to select it.

On the "no command" screen, hold power, push volume up and reenter recovery. Select reboot system. See if the phone boots up.

At this point, you must connect to a PC and see if you can get fastboot to recognize the device. Then we can proceed.
Will the Nexus Root Toolkit http://www.wugfresh.com/nrt/ work even though USB debug has not been turned on?

USB debugging does not have anything to do with being in fastboot or recovery. As long as the proper drivers are installed, your computer can recognize it and you can use fastboot in bootloader.
I just tried to access fastboot on my fire and pushed the wrong button.
When holding "Volume Up" while switching the device on, it shows "Factory APK mode..." on the screen. After releasing the button the message disappears after 2 seconds and the fire boots up normal.
Nothing has happend, it works normal and all apps still work the way they did before.
So what does that mode do?

Likely just safe mode, only stock apps load, when in safe mode.
Used to boot device if a non stock app is causing device to be unusable.
But why do play store and so on still work when booting into that mode?
It just displays the message while booting, but nothing changes when up and running.
5.0.0 or 5.0.1 ? mine boots on fastboot mode
5.0.1, I can take a picture of it later today, didn't know there might be a difference in the versions.
I can only get fastboot ... Are you able to do this reliably? I've tried different hold an release and timings but can get it to happen.
Sorry for the late reply.
I tried to take a photo of it displaying the mode, but my phone couldn't produce a good one, so I finally took a short video. Focus is bad but you can sometimes read it.
I can repeat the process every time: Power down, hold volume up key, power on -> factory APK mode.
Hope that helps you.
Can nobody proove this works?
I mean I can't be the only one with that mode and I'm still wondering what it does.
stays now in fastbootmode - help
Tried that, now it is showing fastbootmode, nothing else happens.
It's stuck in there, it does not react on buttons, nor is it seen by adb.
What can I do to get it back to life?
[Update]
Meanwhile I googled, installed Android SDK, went to platform-tools and tried adb and fastboot.exe.
adb devices gives an empty line.
fastboot devices gives the tablets serial and the word fastboot
fastboot in conjunktion with reboot, reboot-bootloader, continue tries but does nothing on the tablet.
Looks as if I have to wait until the batterie gives up, what do you think?

hold the power button till it turns off and turn on again.
not shure but this worked on the older fires.
Success!
Thanks a lot!
My v5.0.1 german tablet boots into
- recovery mode with volume down + power on keys pressed
- fastboot mode with volume up + power on keys pressed.
Recovery mode says:
Amazon system recovery <3e>
Volume up/down to move highlight;
enter button to select.
reboot system now
apply update from ADB
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
reboot to bootloader
power down
view recovery logs
I have this same problem on my fire that I have only bootloader 5.1.1 and tablet does not start and I can not enter the recovery I wonder if I can help solve
I have 2 Fire 5th gens, 5.1.1, and both have the factory APK mode on vol up button and fastboot mode on vol down. NO recovery mode option. I can't even make it boot into recovery using fastboot reboot commands.
My device went int bootloop suddenly while I was using it. I not able to get in fastboot (when I press Power + Down it shows fastboot window for a sec and reboots again ) or recovery mode(When I press Power + Up, Screen shows up saying no command).
I was using official build(July patch). I have not enabled ADB. My bootloader is also locked.
Is it possible to get this device working?
Any help will be appreciated.

This is normal behavior of stock recovery: seeing "no command" hold "power" and click "Vol+", - to get to the stock recovery menu (btw, search would 100% give you this tip even in these forums).
As you are locked, and thus you have surely lost user data, you can try to make factory reset from recovery menu.
Yet I'd try to connect phone to power and make numerous attempts to reboot, occasionally rebooting into fastboot and into recovery, - with the hope that phone will switch into the other A/B slot.
If nothing helps, TestPoint/EDL is the only option except service.
But again, the problem may be hardware issue, and as you are supposed to disassemble phone preforming TestPoint, I'd check connectors inside and tried to reboot again before reflashing in MiFlash. And do not forget to reflash in fastboot after MiFlash reflash (and unlock phone - which I did immediately after purchase).
This message I get when I try to power up my Note 9 N960F/DS.
I got it this way: Been running the same ROM for 2 years. Time to upgrade. Upgraded TWRP via the app. After downloading the ROM image to SD card, I tapped an app called Reboot, with the Recovery option. I suspect this app is from some old installation, and ended up on this unit via data restore. Now all I get is this message on a black screen. No logo, nothing. Message flashes once. If I plug into PC, message flashes repeatedly. Cannot boot to recovery using Vol-+Pwr, Vol++Pwr ineffective.
I suspect I bricked the phone, but I seem to remember once breaking out of this 2 years back, I think. Any ideas, clues, anything?
Try this, power off phone. Press volume up and bixby button and while pressing buttons insert data cable, phone should go to downlaod mode. OPen odin and flash stock firmware.
OK, tried it, display showed the same message until I released the buttons, then flashed the message every 4 seconds until disconnected.
OK, got it into download mode, reflashed twrp, now it's in a boot loop. Will continue working this.
It took a few tries, but I not only got everything working, I restored my data backup and upgraded to Android 10. Thanks all!
