Are you upgrading to 10/OneUI 2.0 yet? - Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Guides, News, & Discussion

Hello there,
Since Android 10 is finally out in final version for our beloved Note 9 Exynos, how many of you are upgrading, and why? Also, for whom will choose to stick with Pie, again, why? And last, for those who are still on Oreo, what are you waiting for?
Personally, I didn't see that much new features that I really want to use right now. Mostly some tweakings here and there in some interfaces, but nothing really new, looks more like a modded version of Pie . I'm not a fan of the new gestures either, I think I'd keep the navbar anyway so... I'm gonna wait a moment before upgrading. And I'm mostly waiting for Swift Installer/substratum/Goodlock compatibility too, can't live without those
The thing I'd like to try out is DeX on PC, but again I don't really have a need for it. I'm more sad to lose Linux On Dex when I'll upgrade.
What are your opinions?

Still no upgrade here ? middle east user N960F/DS

There is no question about should you upgrade or not. Unless you want to keep vulnerabilities, you have to update to the newer OS (if any) to get the latest security fixes.

True. Or to get newer vulnerabilities ?

Will upgrade the second the official OTA drops. I'm a non-root user and have been waiting for the battery limiter feature that's finally present in One UI 2.0.
Edit: No toggleable charging cap in One UI 2.0. It seems the battery limiter means preventing draining your battery too low when using wireless power sharing in the S10 and up.

Waiting for a decent rom like The Galaxy Project to offer it. Only one so far is Dr Ketan's which won't even boot for me despite 3 clean download and install attempts.

Have you updated your bootloaders and modem files to the latest version?
It usually works with the bootloops.
all the best

Except dex on windows and say good bye to linux on dex, nothing really new.
Only one big problem, as samsung block you to revert back to a stable pie os version. Latest pie is a no with bootloader 4.
Its all marketing I see

I received it yesterday in Morocco, I was using VPN (Germany) but I can't confirm, it is a bless, smooth and new features, I tried dex on pc : amazing, I still need to Check the battery

Just a quick update, to tell that I've finally upgraded because the "new update" notification kept showing up and I got bored of it. It went pretty well, and I'm trying to get used to the new gestures after all, I'll see if I can use them nicely. I'm only afraid to be confused when using my older S7E which doesn't have those. I'm using Hexed+ as a replacement for Swift Installer, waiting for the latter to be updated. Also waiting for Goodlock apps to be updated (for example, to put the clock on the right side again).

No upgrade yet i m from The Balkans. Still waiting for the update OneUI 2

No upgrade. i am afraid of battery life. On pie april patch, my phone battery last longer than pie july patch. I am living with it. but i do not want to lose more juice of battery. will upgrade if battery life improves.

Can you confirm what else was working in pie and not working in Q ?
Also give a try with linux on dex.
For clock on right you can use systemui tuner.
Software update notification can be disabled too.

What's not working:
- Linux On Dex (displays an error like "you must be on latest firmware", so I guess it doesn't recognize the phone as compatible anymore, which is the case as I've read - it's a kernel issue)
- Substratum and other overlay systems like Swift Installer (you could still install unsigned overlays on Pie on the Note9 but that's a thing of the past now. Hopefully there's Synergy (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=projekt.samsung.theme.compiler) which allows using some overlays by using themes - the Android 10/OneUI 2.0 compatibility is in progress).
- Some SystemUI controls, like the clock position (I've tested it all, even the tips involving right_clock_position)
- Good Lock, which isn't updated yet (and it should solve the clock position problem)
So fat that's the only things I miss on my Pie install. Most of them will simply become available again soon, or can be replaced by other means, so that's not so bad. About the new gestures though, I miss my browser shortcut I had setup with NavStar, and also I kinda don't like the wasted space it introduces to allow for gestures. Well, I'll see when NavStar is updated it I simply go back to the navigation bar (I'll be able to use some gestures with OneHand Operation +).
About Linux On Dex problem, on my rooted S7E I'm using Linux Deploy (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ru.meefik.linuxdeploy) but on my unrooted Note9 I'm currently trying a combo of Termux (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.termux) and AnLinux (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=exa.lnx.a).
And I couldn't disable the notification, didn't find a way to do it at the time. I guess now it's too late

What about SystemUI Tuner , doesn't let you to move the clock? It's on play store.
For linux like ubuntu kali debian arch parrot fedora manjaro give a try with AndroNix ,same is on playstore.
For navbar, you can get back as in pie from settings.

As I said in my reply, I did try SystemUI Tuner (I used it on Pie too), and it just doesn't work, the clock doesn't move anymore.
I indeed tried AndroNix and one of their optimized OS, it's good stuff

There was a adb command to move clock too

Looked for this too, but I always find commands that gives permissions to SystemUI, which doesn't really help If you have something to try out, I'd be happy (but if it involves the keyword right_clock_position I can already tell that it doesn't work)

Do not like an iOS like software experience thanks to Google wanting to copy Apple.

24 hours in Using Android 9.0 on my UK H9L - Works surprisingly well - details inside

So after seeing announcements about Project Treble and GSI floating about the internet I thought I'd look for a version to use on my Honor 9 Lite and came across this thread:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/project-treble/trebleenabled-device-discussion/android-pie-kirin-guys-t3830420
Users have had Android Pie running on a honor 7X so I thought there can't be that much difference between the 2 devices, so why not give it a try? If it goes wrong I can always use my stock backup.
So I flashed as per the instructions in that post and it works, really well. So much so that I'm gonna keep it as a daily driver.
Be careful which version of Gapps you use, the BitGapps mentioned in the post has been discontinued by the Dev, I initially tried OpenGapps but it was for 8.0 so failed to install.
If you search around you can still find the last version of BitGapps that was released, and is version 9.0 compatible.
What's Good
Installs pretty quick
Fast, much faster than EMUI - Could be a Placebo effect, but general use is very snappy and downloads/app installs seem very quick
Wi-Fi working fine
Bluetooth working fine, confirmed on Ticwatch and Car radio
Mobile data works fine
Finger print reader works fine
Sound and phone calls work fine
What's not so Good
This Rom is based off AOSP, don't expect any of the Huawei/EMUI functions or features.
On first boot the ROM is bare bones, hardly any apps installed, looks like an old version of Android rather than a shiny new one.
You have to enable guestures before the swipe navbar appears
You'll have to use a 3rd party launcher to get the full Android P look. The Quickstep launcher in this version of AOSP has sqaure icons and certain options like wallpaper/widgets etc just FC. - I chose Lawnchair for this.
Hotspot doesn't work at all, it just disables wi-fi then FC
You may have to mess around with the display settings to make things align correctly, for some reason everything seemed to be shifted to the left edge. I chose small display size with large font size to smooth it out
Camera obviously, same issues as we had on the 8.0 roms, banding/poor tracking/poor quality (Biggest downside) I've not rooted, so not tried any of the camera ports. Open Camera app has the same issues.
Sound over bluetooth was distorted (not confirmed, could be my car radio)
Some graphical glitches. Stutters & frame drops when using task switcher, switching to chrome from recents has a lag/distorted effect and menus appear out of focus and take a second or two to correct
Any Questions I'll try to answer as best as I can.
I've tried many different gsi images on my H9L. Most did make my phone 'feel' faster, I guess mainly due to the overhead EMUI takes and eliminating it does remove some burden from the phone. However, that's where the advantages stopped. Many of the issues you mention on Pie are on Oreo also. I had too many issues to overcome and make it 'daily driver' usable that it just wasn't worth it, so went back to stock and removed as much huawei/honor stuff as i could via root, then removed root. This seems to give me best of both worlds, i.e. close to vanilla android but everything, hardware wise, just works as intended. Since I have BL unlocked and TWRP working i can also keep updating, via HURupdater, with official updates for as long as huawei/honor keep posting updates; e.g. currently on B135 with Aug security patches, that is just as good as any GSI image now (Aug18).

Worth updating to Pie?

Hi guys,
I have a debranded P10 c432 on emui 8. Firmware Finder report a VTR-LGRP2-OVS 9.0.1 Full OTA it's a strange name, very different from the one based on emui 8 that are somehting like "VTR-L09C432".
So:
Can I install that fw and go to emui 9?
Is it worth updating? the system is slow? battery life? how about the video stabilization?
Can I root?
Can I downgrade, eventually?
thank you in advance

1. The best you can do untill ota arrives is to try via hicare. That way i managed to install emui9 on my vtr-l29c432. The firmwares on ff might cause a brick if it's not the right one for your device so i don't think it's worth the risk.
2.In terms of performace i find the overall system a bit faster and smoother in transitions so for me it's a worth upgrade. No slowdowns or whatever, it's quick and stable with no issues so far (approx. 2weeks of use). Battery seems to be the same, depends on your usage, it may dry fast if you always on screen or it can last a full day if you don't stress it out. About the video i'm not so sure about it but on 1080p 60fps seems to be fine but again i'm not sure about it. I dont record that much on the phone, i ocasionally take some pictures and the camera seems to be fine. Maybe with future updates will be better. It's all about your preferences.
3. I don't use root but maybe it's possible with magisk.
4.Yes, with hisuite.
first thank you so much @Firicel69

To upgrade to EMUI 9, you need a full firmware - those are listed as VTR-L29C432E1R1P9B165 (9.0.1.165), as an example. The LGRP2 firmwares, those are core system update images for non-Chinese devices (the Bnnn portion of the build number); they split the pieces apart into separately versioned bits with Pie.
I can't say anything for EMUI 9 features specifically, as I installed it for the updated vendor image, not EMUI.
You can root, with Magisk. They removed the ability to boot with a ramdisk in a normal boot, so Magisk takes over recovery instead; newer releases can boot both ways by button detection at boot time.
Downgrade - hisuite.
My battery life went down, but to early to say, because theese Huaweis is smart and needs time to learn habits and battery use... In two weeks I know more.
I don't think it's worth it. Smoother animations and better zoom photo quality are the only upsides. Other than that:
- camera app is much less intuitive, swiping between modes is slow and irritating, that's one of the things that should not be copied from iOS
- no video stabilization whatsoever
- image color processing is a hit and miss (it hates nature), when it gets slightly darker images are too dark
- I lost 1 hour of screen on time
- gallery app is stupid, it lost all the customization. You can't change folders to a list, you can't even rearrange the order!
- screenshot "mechanic" is stupid, it adds one unnecessary step to the process if you want to edit it or something
- themes app is unuseable, it got worse going from Nougat to Oreo, now it's just a messy store. Keep the theme you're on right now and forget about it.
- NFC issues (file transfer works, mobile payments don't).
In short - If your P10 works fine don't bother with the update.

Can underline this.
Also the Memo-App is bad now, no more tick-boxes for quick notes (which is really annoying) and other small issues.
On of the most annyoing is the changing of notification colors on the lockscreen. This is so infuriating for me.....
I dig the Pie, better blutooth, and cams and gallery is nice here, also like the look on swipe menu, and maneuver...
The battery is better today.. I've blockcharged while I was in the shower and 50% now...
It's an old phone.. so I usually block charge abit on the night, in weekend I tend to stay up abit later also...
The phone is faster loading and multitasking.
Gallery is nice? What's nice about it? Blinding white background while viewing your pictures? Or the fact that you cannot do such basic thing as rearranging the order of your folders?
Pie on p10 is very battery efficient. It's so efficient at killing background processes that even calendar notifications won't work properly anymore. Last time I had alarm 22 hours and some minutes late. All other notifications appear at very random times, but always very late. Notifications work fine only for a few days until the app probably gets kicked out of ram. Completeley useless.
And then there is camera with much worse low light quality, bluetooth problems, useless themes app and bunch of other completely useless features and I'm slowly having enough of huawei and their updates. I've had my p10 since march 2017 and I don't think it ever worked without at least one major bug.
Ok I get the point, pie is for someone good and for - too many - a mess. But, maybe because it's a beta? On FF I cannot understand if it9s a beta release or not. Because some other versions of oreo are been released on April with Pie.
And BTW I have spend some time to read some threads here (dated March) and the @Jannomag scripts and it's obvious that it's too early to install it. There is no TWRP, and install magisk is completed and unreliable.
So maybe I will update oreo and wait that pie is mature enough at least that I could install twrp and magisk. Because, honestly, I don't care that gallery app or themes are worst, I could always replace them, the importance is that the system is usable.
It's not a beta. I got it through HiCare app, it's an official OTA update. Besides - most of the things I'm complaining about are present in P30 as well. That's how EMUI 9 is supposed to work.
@Imnotdriving, how is Bluetooth better? Asking because it might be a factor in my decision to upgrade ?
As it turns out, my phone got the pie update last night so I got my own answer. One previously stubborn to connect speaker now connects quickly with aptx Bluetooth hence confirming that Bluetooth is improved.
Otherwise I like the new gesture navigation option in this update. Beyond that, not much is different for the way I use the phone.
There are a lot of new services running and I disabled about a dozen of the low hanging fruit. There's more that I'm sure I'll disable over time once I find out what they do.

The information in the update link spesofic stated that blutooth functions would be better, I don't remember exactly what it said.
Guys what package should I use for upgrade?
VTR-LGRP2-OVS 9.0.1.203
Or
VTR-L29C432E1R1P9B185
Both full ota
The OVS one is just one package update_full_base. Zip but it seems newer then the b185

For the initial update, the LGRP1/LGRP2 packages shouldn't be used - while it's marked FullOTA, it's not a complete build, as it's missing various partitions that need to be flashed in an upgrade from Oreo. (Basically, you'll brick if you flash one of those.)
If you're already on Pie, either works equally well.

So I should use the VTR-L29C432E1R1P9B185 package with the script here? After that I can update pie with LGRP2? But is LGRP2-OVS a sort of beta?
Do you advise me to use the jannomag script or the hi suite trick with dns?
I hope everything goes fine, I want to do a full wipe and install magisk

I've done all of my updates to P using a nocheck recovery. I can't say anything about the tricks with HiSuite or the script you've mentioned, though they should work just fine.
As far as the build numbers go: LGRP1-CHN and LGRP2-OVS are the China and everywhere else builds, respectively. It's possible that some of them might be beta, though I suspect the release notes would give up some indication of that.

After android 10 Update, is this also happening to you?

1. Fullscreen gesture navigation is not working with 3rd party launcher(im using lawnchair launcher)
2. Gxfont to customize font also is not working anymore.
3. Goodlock only some can be use, some are now unplugged.
So, is there any solution for those 3 problem for now? Let me know if u guys know it ya.. thank you.
For what I know about the goodlock models, only six (clockface, routines, egde lightning +, one hand operation +, sound assistente, theme park) of them work with 10 and the others have to be updated from samsung to work and maybe it shall be done by the end of January.... I remember that the same thing happened even last year passing to Pie from Oreo. About the other's you mentioned, to work with 10 you have to wait that there developers give them an update for having compatibility with 10. To be sure that update is needed, try to unistall every app that doesn't work and Install it again. If this doesn't make things work, you have to wait for the next apps update.

Turns out that the stock Samsung Gallery has a secret menu, and it`s easy to enable it, take a look.
Moderator Edit: YouTube link removed due to violation of XDA external links policy.
Best part is that it runs on One UI 3.1/3.0/2.5 and 2.1 so even earlier devices should benefit.
Test it for yourself and let us know here what you were able to activate or de-activate.
Doesn't do anything on my Note 10+ /Pie.
Damn! Which version are you using (Gallery & One UI)? It should work back to One UI 2.1 - can you try again - you have to aim for the last few digits - I myself did not get it the first time...

Gallery 10.2.00.19/ One UI vers 10.0.40.6
No go with this version.
Samsung is fond of hidden secret menus. Who knows how many there really are?
I found one by accident over a year ago.
Really? Those goofballs would have you tapping on everything. It's more than just annoying.
Anymore I cringed at updating any Samsung apk other than Wearables. Last update on the Good Lock family of apps left it with dumb looking creepy dancing icons on the main menu and zero tangible functionality improvements.
Small wonder I'm still running Pie; don't need AT&T/Samsung and Google screwing up -my- N10+!
I found a few more in Bixby (allowing capsule test) and S Health (a bit more settings) - still testing them...
Agree - stick on Pie - unless you dont want to test next versions
I finally got it to work. You have to press on the version number several times not the word Gallery. Kind of interesting....
I tried and it did not work, but i tried harder, and being pixel perfect? It did work on A32 latest version.
Works on my S21+ (stock) with all the latest updates. Thanks!

I dont use infrared and in india no 5g... So these compramise are better than miui ... Idk why lockscreen clock fonts are so bad.... I have to keep some good custom theme... Where i cant even change background...
the 5G requires someone with a global version phone with root to send some files.
infrared is going to be fixed soon, back screen is still a WIP.

The lock screen large number will only be displayed without any notification, which is the same as the pixel mechanism. Google's built-in wallpaper software has many good dynamic wallpapers, which are still good

There is updates comming as soon as the developer find reasons, for the moment 3 updates is released!
I tried the installation. Followed exactly as written. I installed the lastest .EU weekly, replaced the recovery, factory reset/data wipe and installation of the ROM with ADB sideload. All smooth without any issues. Afterwards rooted the phone with Magisk 24.3 and started reinstalling apps/restore from Swift Backup. Until now I didn't have any issues. Pictures look similar (as far as I have seen) and phone is very fluent. I don't use the rear screen - so not really missing it. For 5G - at least it shows 5G here in Germany. If it is really connected with 5G I can't really say. On MiUi it always showed the type of connection in the status bar. Here it is not the case. But until now I don't regret it. No china spam . But I replaced the launcher immediately with lawnchair. The standard pixel launcher is too simple for me. Thanks DEV !!! Looking forward to further updates.
What are the advantages of this rom compared to the EU one? Thinking of switching but being hopeful to know what I'm heading towards
Very good question. In general I would say the biggest advantage is just a pure and actual Android without any Chinese bloatware and MiUi. For the rest I can't say much at this point as I just installed it last night. But so far it looks everything works what I need (Face Unlock, Fingerprint, Camera....).
Correction. Once you are not connected with WiFi anymore it shows if you are 4G or 5G connected. So all good .
I always have issues understanding slot a and b..I tried flashing..it was showing active slot a... Fw done ...PE ROM done... Active slot changed to B (not sure if it's normal)..then when I tried to flash magisk error occurs

Don't flash Magisk at that point. When you have setup your phone you can install Magisk as a normal APK. Then copy the boot.img from your PC to your phone and run Magisk. If you want to install it - it can only patch the boot.img at that time. Let it do so. I will create a magisk_patched boot.img. Copy this one back to your PC and bring the phone into fastboot. Then with the command "fastboot boot magisk_patchedxxxxxx.img" the patched file will be used for booting but not written on your phone! In case of any issue you can easily restart and no bootloop. Once the phone started correct you can go again to Magisk and use the first entry for installing it. This time you can select "direct install". Let it work its magic and you are fully rooted.
I noted a new issue... During call...due to proximity screen turns off..and it's very difficult for me to turn back on...
Only issue noticed so far... Remaining is so fluent as expected
After knowing the amount of process in rooting...and things that can go wrong...it's better for me to stay unrooted.. lol...
And wish to know he is battery backup ?
