Has anyone been able to get unlimited hotspot on their Moto? I'm on metro with unlimited data and I have had this with previous phones but can't seem to find a way on this on. I can get us tether to work but not WiFi. Both FoxFi and WiFi tether router get stuck on obtaining ip with the client.
God I wish! I think that cuck in charge of T-immoBILE (John Levers) and his dungcarrier initiative blocked the ability to have unlimited service on our "unlimited" plans .
It isn't the carrier but the phone. If I switch back to my s6 I can do it.

If you have access to ADB you can try the solution from the link below:

Is anyone aware of an app to allow sharing of the phones data connection through WiFi on the HTC Vivid?
Is rooting necessary?
FYI: I'm not interested in AT&T's official data sharing as I'd have to change from my grandfathered unlimited plan.

Looking to purchase the Vivid if it works for my scenario (WiFi Router). If I do end up getting this device and test this I will definately share the results.
Thanks for the info!
WIFI Tether does not work
I tried the WIFI Tether and it does not work when I had the Atrix they were able to modify the entitlement check to have hotspot access is this possible with the Vivid. Thanks
Is there a way to enable tethering on a Windows Phone 8 handset without having to pay the carrier? There was a hack for Windows Phone 7 that allowed this, but I'm not seeing anything for Windows Phone 8.
On WP7.X there are ROMS out there that have internet sharing but if you stream and use it offten your provider will eventually find out. I use mine to check email and to test VPN but i'm in and out; don't really surf or stream.

I am on Verizon and switched to the new plan (not unlimited data anymore since I needed to upgrade). If you are on a "limited" data plan the tethering is free and works perfect. Not sure about ATT.
As far as enabling it otherwise, on WP8 you can't until someone figures out an Interop-unlock or custom ROM.

This is something imposed by the carriers. If you get an international version phone, you won't have to pay them.
It also depends on which carrier you use. For instance, in my corner of the world, tethering drains away at your subscription's data connection, and if you exceed that you begin paying.

Anyone able to tether with a VZW MX2? Foxfi?
Sure. Easy using built in tethering.
I assume this means you have paid tethering? I am on unlimited, can I add tethering without losing unlimited?

Yes, I'm on a family share plan. While you can set up a plan to pay for tethering, I'm a firm believer that you shouldn't have to. Do a littleore research on foxfi and some of the other tethering apps.
I don't necessarily want to pay, just want to be able to do it and keep unlimited. I don't have my phone yet (est Oct 27) so curious if anyone has been able to get tethering to work with foxfi or similar.

From what Verizon has told me.yes you can, and you will have unlimited tether.
I have unlimited data and no tether plan, just tried to setup the mobile hotspot with no dice says I have to pay 30/mo for tethering. Been using EasyTether which works - I hate having to install separate apps on both the phone and pc to do this, but it works which beats the alternative.

Thanks for checking, did you try both FoxFi and built in? Are there any other hotspot apps that might work?
I am really hoping to tether my tablet from my phone, so the EasyTether won't really work for me. I also use my phone to tether my chromecast and tablet together...so bluetooth isn't the best option for that either.
I presume once root is achieved it will be possible, so I will have patience just hoped it would be an easy fix
If possible, I am curious about the same thing. Can someone install FoxFi and see if it will work with Moto X?

Damn, I was afraid of that. Wifi tethering is essential for me. Thanks for letting me know.
With respect to wifi tethering (via Foxfi or other), someone suggested the need to encrypt the phone, which then (somehow) permits wifi tethering to work. Before I spend the time doing so, I wanted to see if anyone has heard this as well and/or attempted it?

What they mean encrypt the phone is by putting a password lock on the phone. Even if you do it, it still gives you the error message seen above, "WiFi tethering blocked by carrier"

Yes, encrypt the data/storage on the phone by going under Settings->Security->Encrypt phone.

For those out there with unlimited grandfathered att plans how do you tether without att sending nasty grams. I realize vpn is the way to go to avoid ttl detection but is there any apps that do this seamlessly?
Get FoxFi - it doesn't work for WiFi tethering, but I can confirm it works for USB tethering.
Will give it a shot thanks, Will it allow VPN as well using Foxfi?
If you don't use VPN they will know you are tethering and will potentially terminate your unlimited data. Keep in mind they monitor data in different way. TTL being one of the easier methods.
MementoM said:
So is FoxFi not enough then?. They say they use your phone to generate all network requests when you click on the "Hide Tether Usage" and then go on saying most users currently do not need this extra feature.

ATT will sniff packets or use other methods like TTL and redirects (proxy) to determine if you are actually tethering or not. So if you don't hide your packets they will know if you are tethered or not. Sure you can use the app but ATT will likely find a way to notify you or cut you off. There were even reports they have insight to your phone and the apps on the phone, that i have a hard time believing, but with the new S6 there is a ATT remote app which unless you are root can not be turned off. With that said VPN is only way to hide the fact you are tethering but when you go from using a few gigs to a lot in a month they will know something is up. Do a search and you will see.
I have friends who tether all the time using their unlimited ATT data without getting any nasty grams. They don't use VPN's and just don't use crazy amounts of data. If you don't abuse the unlimited data and hide in plain sight, ATT won't bother you. VPN's are a great extra layer of protection when connecting to open public hotspots but they also make you stand out when "trying" to hide. The only person I know who has ever been busted for tethering was someone on a Verizon grandfathered unlimited plan because one month they used a stupid amount of data, over 50 Gig if I remember.

Sure if you go overboard it is obvious, the reality is you are violating the policy and ATT can and will cancel your unlimited. It has happened before and I'm sure they will do it again. Just do a simple search on here and you will see all the users who reported getting the letter. With regards to VPN, i disagree, i use VPN anytime I'm away from my home. I have my own VPN at home so I connect to my own vpn. Not using VPN on public wifi is just foolish.
MementoM said:
After messing with my VPN connection I was able to connect to my VPN while also connected with FoxFi. Bad part was the download speed is even worse then my home speed. I guess I just won't go overboard when tethering.

There is overheard with VPN so it will be slower, you have to pay to play as they say.
Hey guys,
Is it possible to enable tethering without root? When I use the native tethering it just pops up a message that says to go to att.com/mywireless (but there are no options to turn it on there)?
Thanks guys, I need this functionality for work.
I'm on the 15 gig shared data plan and my tethering in available with out root I used to need root but when I changed to this plan it was no longer needed not sure if that was what made it available on my phone or something else. I will check the other phones on the plan and see if they also have tether available and let you know.

Hey, I have the unlimited data plan that comes bundled with direct tv, which I called and does not support tethering. they said I'd have to change to a non-unlimited plan that supports tethering, or get another device that has a data plan that has tethering, but the cheapest plan is 40 dollars a month for 2 gb of data. Does anyone know a way to root the phone (can send me a link) so that I can keep my unlimited plan and still tether? Or know some other option that allows me to keep my unlimited plan and still tether? Thanks!
Not sure of the status of them, but try out PdaNet and FoxFi ... The latter has been removed from the play store by sprint and at&t, but you can find the url in the FoxFi Addon description.
[edit]
Confirmed, pdanet is still a thing. One of the few apps I truly found worth what I paid for it.
Links and details
Tethering is part of the mobile share data plan.

This app works perfectly!! Thank you, NOTHING else works with AT&T's new unlimited plan except for this.
I can confirm Foxfi/PdaNet works via usb, without root. Install Foxfi (paid full version) on your phone and have PDAnet on your pc and attach via usb.

Hi
I am new and I have a question and a answer which probably is not the one you are looking for but you have to start some where to learn like you and me. My question is what is tethering without root. As for tethering I go to settings- connections- mobile hot spot and tethering and turn it on. Hope you don't mind a first day rookie bothering you and hope we can become friends here. Take care.
Someone correct me if I am wrong but rooting your phone will enable full tethering on this new unlimited data deal but it can be detected by att and in some cases att will automatically add a tethering fee to your bill if detected. However it's extremely hard to detect Android phones (and more expensive) so generally att pursues this more on Apple platforms. Just wanted to confirm my own understanding before I switch plans. If true, it's a win win for this community.

no root yet for the s6 active. but anyone interested in tethering i found a work around. dowload klink tether from playstore to run your laptop no root required. the app has simple intructions to get you going. once you have that all done now you can download a hotspot program on your laptop. i use connectify turns it into a hotsot so you will actualy be connecting to the laptop wich is running from your phone works fine. now you have free wireless tether. if anyone noes a easier tether option i would like to no foxfi didnt work for me as it did on other devices im currently running marshmellow on the s6 active
