Xiaomi - decent hardware but MIUI software is flakey? - Redmi K20 Pro / Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro Questions & Answe

Had my Mi 9T Pro for a few weeks now and after debloating with the tool and learning not to let any of the 'power saving' options in the MIUI free, it's pretty stable and excellent battery life.
However, it still does random things like kill Accubattery, Greenify or my smartwatch bluetooth connection - which I can't track down the cause of. MIUI optimisation is off and every power saving box is unticked but it still manages to kill things at will, which I might not then notice for hours. Permissions keep changing, even when I've gone and set an app to have every permission available, which I suspect is again the MIUI brutally killing apps and corrupting their settings in the process.
The MIUI is a bit of a learning curve, with some nice features, but it all feels a little like the bedroom coding of a custom ROM to me; it's not really mature and fully joined up - the bugs mean you can turn something off in one place but it still keeps happening 'cos of another setting elsewhere and the random s**t is quite annoying.
So, other then changing to a custom ROM and losing some of the hardware is there any way to permanently stop MIUI from being anything more than just a skin over Android 10?

Some possible problems and concerns about my new Note 5

Hello there,
I recently got a Note 5 and I am coming from a iphone 5s. This is my first android device ever and I am trying to get used to it. Thus, I noticed a few things that bothered me a little bit. When I scroll down faster than usual in apps like facebook, shaman, play store, whatsapp emoji menu etc. I get a laggy/jittery behaviour. Some people mentioned browsing as well but I think samsung browser seems decent, I feel no lag after it completely loads the page. I dont wanna believe that this device cant handle even Facebook app, maybe its a network related problem (I am sitting on a 10-25mb internet depending on where I am). I feel an extremely small stutter when I switch between menus for the first time in simple apps like dialer. I just pop it, for example when I first go to contacts and favourites, it kinda stutters for an extremely short time. I am aware such concerns might sound stupid but I am really not sure how it is supposed to be. Next, I am getting about 5-6 hours of SOT battery life. Location is on (wifi and cellular), android device manager is off, NFC off, wifi is always on where I dont have to use mobile data. I noticed that android system is draining the highest amount just after Screen. Usage was mostly Whatsapp, some facebook, phone settings (since I am trying to figure out stuff), a little bit of gaming and twitch. Brightness is auto and at about %30. I also got a geekbench score of Single Core: 1450ish and Multi Core: 4500ish.
Finally, I wonder if these concerns are expected and possible to solve. I did some reading but unfortunately never had chance to come across to a clarifying explanations to all these things. I thank you in advance for your time taken and effort reading this.

Being an ios and android user, what i can say is android can never(as of now) be as smooth as IOS. This is the truth as android is made to support all the variety of devices, however android users get more customisability more useful free apps and more control over the device they own. 5-6 hours of SOT is considered not bad, it really depends on personal usage i think it is acceptable, i guess the ability to see what your phone is using may be a good or bad thing. For what you know maybe on IOS the system actually drains as much or even more than android just that we are unable to view. hahaha :highfive: cheers not looking for flammers just my two cents.
Thanks for the input =) Hopefully this will be solved with a software update later. Still some confirmation/consultancy will be much appreciated, cheers

[Q] About the encryption, performance and future updates.

Hi All,
Finally got my hands on a new nexus 6 for a bargain price. I've been reading and searching alot in this subforum in order to answer alot of questions i had.
My 6 is upgraded to last ota available with the last security patches, but the phone is encrypted.
Now the question is, is either me that is over-sensible to slowdowns and juddering due to encryption, or the people doens't really notice it that much? It bugs me out.
Granted my 6 is not rooted and unfortunately due to the need of having a working phone in an hour i didn't even explored the possibility of disabling force encrypt, but afaik this would lead me to:
- Do a full wipe to keep encryption off and thus loose all my stuff
- Reinstall everything from scratch
Is that right?
Also if i got right, doing so leads to:
- Impossibility to install OTAS because doing so will re-encrypt my phone and i will need to start from scratch again
- Impossibility to upgrade to Nougat when released, granted it will be encrypted from the start
Is that right?
Also if those saying that encryption performance is almost the same of having none, why i'm having such lags, juddering, pauses between apps, low battery performance and excessive warm when used for long?
Is my phone faulty/my android version or that is what happens when you run an encrypted phone with alot of apps (more than 50 due to work)?
Thanks for those who will take a minute to answer my questions.
Have a good day y'all.

Thank you, actually i have all the stuff to disable the encryption. My point in question is, restoring a backup made in TWRP makes it encrypted again?
Because i want to avoid to reinstall everything, set my apps back from zero and so on.
Also that doesn't quite answer to the question about security patches and OTA's. Do the phone reencrypts itselfs and gets wiped if i force install an OTA or security patch?
Each time i need to do the whole process from scratch?
To change kernel, system and data partitions you need root access. When rooted OTA update will fail.
That's why many N6 users have a custom rom and Twrp-recovery installed.
To avoid hassle and reinstall data and apps.
I am using this rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=59561445/
The dev updates the rom mostly before the official OTA .
About encryption: in daily use not noticeable.
Only backup is faster; twice.
Battery. The amoled display is consuming a lot of battery power. To avoid this I am using apps withdark themes and a black background.
So no Gmail but Aquamail.

Thank you for your insight. So i'm better off to a custom rom, updated with encryption off and call it a day?
I don't want to stick to CM or other roms, i would like to stick to official-based ones, to keep the sake of google pureness.
Thanks again.
In a short time the new version Android Nougat will be available for the N6.
I think it's useful to wait. Don't make changes before you updated to Nougat.

Yeah thats my point, the problem is that i can't bear anymore the sluggish performance and the lag, sometimes it slows down to crawl, and based on some benches i did its because the disk access is so high that even alot of cpu power is used. The phone becomes hot when managing 6 mailboxes, 4 social profiles and pages and tons of other activites.
It destroys my battery life and also the performance takes a huge hit.
I guess ill be patient and wait for Nougat to come in a form of custom rom.
Decrypt will not give you a noticeable Bett. performance.
Try the app Advanced Task Manager. To kill background activities.

Well then definitely something is wrong with my phone. It really (sometimes) slows down to something unbearable. I think i'll wait, if things gets complicated, i will do a wipe.
I never experienced such low performance not even on dual core phones. I had to reboot at least once yesterday to get things decent enough.

When a reboot solves the performance issue than try the app Quit Reboot (PhongIT). It has several options for rebooting. .
Another performance issue can be caused by the Google Play Services (searches continuously for updates), or apps working in background. Check the battery use in Settings - Apps - <app name>.
Disable the Google Plays Services temporarely to see possible differences.
When the battery is becoming warm/hot. Could be a bad radio connection. Switch to 2G.
Switch off wifi and bluetooth when you don't need it.
Delete apps you hardly use or disable them in Settings.

thank you, will take care of the things listed.
there are so many great custom roms to try, some cm based, some not, and most if not ALL of them do not have any of the issues you are complaining about.
its a Nexus; root it, and start trying the dozens of custom roms out there..
dont bother decrypting; its a hassle with zero real world benefiits, aside from back up speed, which is meaningless imo
and, all the custom roms pretty much update constantly, so rarely are you more than a few days/week behind any google updates when you use a good rom; the dev's make sure they update/add any real improvements/features really fast.

WiFi Turning Off During Deep Sleep

Hi all,
Can anyone help with this issue. I can see no long discussion about it which seems to suggest it's either rare (not great) or something I am doing (probably).
My WiFi status appears to be fine throughout the day, when in regular use. I have no speed issues (connection speeds as expected for my home internet), no random drops or on/off switches and no seeming battery drain. I have all additional services on (Bluetooth, location and NFC as I want the phone to be fully functional at all times and not just 'look nice') and despite this I get what I would expect in battery life (c. 6 hrs screen on time). YET, amongst a few other problems (what is the slider customisation about - awful!) the one I can't fathom is this:
My WiFi switches off over night presumably when the phone goes into deep sleep. I have gone into the advanced settings and set it to 'Always on' but this doesn't seem to keep it 'always on'. I wake up in the morning and it is off. I was running some Tasker profiles (which seem to make little difference given the slider issue noted above) but actually my WiFi isn't one off the Tasks effected by a night time profile.
Any help would be appreciated.
AS a secondary question, I switched my VPN over to Canada as suggested and was provided with the Nougat update. I haven't yet tried it but was wondering if there are any bugs that I should consider before switching over given I am 4 days into owning this phone and still haven't ironed out certain things in Marshmallow.
Just as a follow up question, would the 'turn Doze off' option help with this? Surely I shouldn't have to do this though?
Am I the only one having this issue? That would suck. Even so, would anybody more adept at these things than me like to have a guess at solving the issue.
IV had agresive dose mode on and haven't had any wifi problems but I am on 4.0.1 so might want to just update it as it's really stable and I haven't had any issue except having to reconfigure the APN settings. PS if you do update reset you phone after as some people have said it helps with the new file system.

This happens when people is crying about updates every day. Then, when the updates are available, they update it in the first minute and again, they start crying, that they encounter bugs and stuff that doesnt work as it should, even if they dont have any idea how to revert their OS to the previous working one. People should learn how to be patient and enjoy their phones without being so greedy about updates.
Just sit tight, enjoy your phone, READ forums about latest updates and the problems encountered on that specific update ( since its still a beta update, and an early one , called Beta 1 ). If they seem to be fine with those issue, ONLY then should update to the latest one.

I haven't 'cried' about anything, pal, so keep your unhelpful comments to yourself or help. Don't middle ground-it by offering your own personal, and incorrect, opinions.
I hadn't upgraded anything, I was running stock OS and stock marshmallow, so I had literally done nothing to my device other than switch it on and download the same apps I've been using for years.
I've also rooted several devices in the past with no issues and chime in when I can to help, but I'm not a dev and there are far more technologically gifted individuals operating in this forum which is why I sought help here... Not that I got much from you. But I'm more than capable of reading release notes and making sure I can revert backwards before installing anything.
Now to anyone still here, and with the same issue, it appears that carrying out the update to Nougat, re-adding my WiFi networks and clearing system cache solved the problem or at least for the first night. Should this change I'll update here.

Hi Iso, thank you for your response, I hadn't seen this until now.
The upgrade to 4.0.1 does appear to have done the trick somewhat as it stayed on overnight without issue. I did notice it wasn't on a little later this morning but I am giving the device the benefit of the doubt on that one as I have been messing about with certain things and it's possible I or a profile in tasker switched it off.
As an aside do you recommend any other potential fixes, just to be on the safe side.
Did you factory reset after upgrading? Other than that it's probably a app you have I hear Facebook is really bad at battery

I didn't factory reset, only Cache wipe after the upgrade, and as it seems ok so far, I am reluctant to factory reset the device as it took so long to set up in the first instance.
Should it start becoming an issue again I'll try it but for now...
Also I know there are backup options though I haven't found one that works flawlessly which gives me the confidence to explore this avenue just yet.
You might have to because in nuogat they optimized the file system and in order to get the new one you have to factory reset not 100% sure it affects battery life but it really affects performance, PS also try turning off gestures, ambient display and pocket mode

Are you sure ISO? The UI has been updated and the already snappy OS feels snappier. Is there a way to tell for sure if it's required?
If so, any good recommendations for backup capability. I have used Helium to mixed results and I can't use Titanium as I have no root (and don't wish to).
Maybe not but it all elts fails

Mi 10 Ultra as "main phone"

Hi, after using the Mi 10 Ultra now for some weeks I will share some thoughts.
In short: The hardware (everything from charging to the cameras are simply Amazing) - however, I would not encourage anyone to use it as their "real" phone or phone used for work - at least not if things does not get better with firmware updates.
There are simply to many bugs or limitations that makes it impossible for me to be productive with the phone.
A few examples:
* Google assistant keeps be replaced by Xiaomis own assistant so I have to set it back to my preference several times a day. Not a dealbreaker but very annoying.
* Could not choose my own choice of launcher (Nova) but here I'm a bit grumpy because this turned out to be quite easily solvable (in case it does not give the same annoying behaviour as the assistant-thing)
* Does seem impossible to get RELIABLE notifications to the computer from SMS, Whatsapp etc, no matter what I do with both app specific settings (lik turn of battery optimizations, giving different permissions to the app, allouing autostart etc) AND putting general settings for restriction of mobil OFF, the phone keeps stopping data when display is off
* I have missed an enormeus amount of meetings because somehow the phone does not work with teams and intunes in a good way so all of a sudden I can not log on to intunes or onenote and has to spend 20 minutes on deletion of cach and app data, restarting the phon, sync of principples etc and then it works a few hours again. Completely useless for work. Also here I have gone trough and given permissions for almost everything to see if it helps (and it does not help). To be looked out of online-meetings several times a day because messing with the phone simply just does not work.
* Bluetooth is a trial and error thing when connectring different speakers and handsfrees, tok 3 days until I all of a sudden could pair my WF-1000XM3 with the phone for example. This was however a "one off" and now it works so I can live with that.
The things mentiones above that is connected to work is absolutely no problem on any other phones or tablets I have tried it on (Sony, Samsung, Huawei).
So for now I will put my SIM back in my old phone and use the Mi 10 Ultra as private phone and mainly like a good camera and videoeditor.
I realise it might (with the headline I posted) be posted in the wrong part of the forum.
I guess what I really was hoping for is some input to solutions of the problems I mention because I really WANT to be able to use the phone as my phone.
Install the .EU rom. It solved most of these issues for me:
+ Mi assistent is not in the rom, so Google's assistant will then stick. Overall, all google apps and services work way better when neatly made part of the eco system prior to setup.
+ notifications work out-of-the-box on this rom just about flawlessly. Had problems getting them immediately and on the lockscreen with the original Chinese rom, they work perfect with the EU rom.
+ Teams works fine here, as does contact sync, calander sync, location history etc.
Had no issues with bluetooth in either rom version. Don't use custom launchers, so can't comment on that.
Love this phone!
There's a lot of issues there. Some fixable, but overall it you want a solution... Flash the Xiaomi.eu rom..
Basically I got this phone myself realising it would be a project. Spending around 1k, on a foreign device not guaranteed to work in my country. I knew going in I would almost certainly want to change it from stock. I only mention now because it's possible to do something about it. It's silly to live with so many tiny software problems with such a majestic piece of hardware. To make your phone your daily go-to I think this phone requires a bit of extra work. I consider it a small tax for having the best phone there is.
Nice headphones btw I have the same ones. I cannot cope without them working
One more vote for xiaomi.eu ROM. It is basically the go-to ROM when purchasing a Xiaomi device.
A lot of what OP mentioned is user error combined with the software being a little odd out of the box (but totally fixable). I'm using Lawnchair no problem. Use miui hidden settings to change it.
The notification issue is annoying but all you have to do is open the app settings and mess with the notification settings a little bit. Turn on all the options and set priority to high, you'll never have a problem again.
Google assistant was on my phone and I didn't even install it... In fact I had to go out of the way to tell it to f off.
My bluetooth has worked absolutely fine zero issues. Excellent range and low battery drain.
I love this phone, it can certainly improve in some ways through software updates but the way it is I'm happy with my purchase, even spending $950 for it. Which is the most I've ever spent on a phone by a mile.
Someone's definitely going to reply to me saying "it should just work out of the box". Maybe, but if you want something that "just works" and don't value the extra features buy an iPhone.
I agree.
I don't have any problems at all.
No ads.
Google assistant works perfect, mi assistant I removed through adb
No bluetooth issues aside from the metà data not showing on my car radio.
Pretty happy here.
The thing that could be better would be some notifications icons in the always on display
Can you point me to a guide to remove miui assistant?
My issues are the right swipe notification I would like to be google feed not Chinese.
Swipe up from bottom, same thing, Chinese

Hi, I have actually put all settings to "high", "allowed" or "off" (when it comes to powersaving), but getting notifications or not having apps closed down is still a lottery (although the changes has made the situation a bit better it has not solved the problem).
Has anyone of you that DO NOT have problems tried to use the phone for work with apps like "intunes" and "teams" (because this is the biggest problem to have to reinstall apps like teams, it feels like it must have been to go to war with a "mouth charger" back in the days. Parts of theese problems I have had with Huawei phones also but there it just took some tweaking to get rid of the problems).

This phone is exclusive to the Chinese market and not built with the west in mind at all.
Anyone saying it should just walk out the box, well, unless they're living in China they're being naive and wrong. This is not a device for where we are, it is not supposed to be.
So in that mind I come back to xiaome.eu rom - why would one not take a step to make the phone work better than stock?

Guess step one for me then is to unlock the phone.

Absolutely. Unlocking it will threaten to wipe your phone so go through with it as if you're gonna do it.
Because it needs to show you the countdown and then it's a week til you can do anything even if you wanted to

Do you have google feed working with lawnchair?
Woke up in he morning, launcher went back to the system one, all 5he settings (widgets and folders) from lawnchair are gone. Cannot wait to get the xiaomi.eu firmware, because chinese is really bad.

I had this with Nova,I think I ended up.. wait for it.. setting every permission for Nova I could find
The EU ROM uses the same permission style but the reigns are off. I'm glad you know you need to move to that ROM!
Trust me, you don't get these problems with the EU ROM. It's Xiaomi security being a bit too zealous.
They don't officially let you use another launcher. Obviously you get around it by setting it in the launcher you want itself.. but yeah the EU ROM doesn't do this.

Question Buggy software issues

I recently bought the redmi note 11 and updated it to the latest rom of miui 13.0.1.0 stable which is on top of Android 12
Now I am seeing the following issues
1. Ringtone / Alarm / Notification sounds not working
2. Keyboard not opening sometimes and gets stuck, only restart helps
3. Apps start to hang and after that phone does not connect to internet at all even if wifi is connected.
Anyone else facing the same issues if so how to resolve them?
I am looking to install a custom rom if things persists but I don't want to void the warranty yet so any official way to resolve them?
It's always good to do a factory reset after bigger OTA update. I'm not saying it will fix your problem but give it a try. There were many similar situations like yours and this helped them.
I did it multiple times but did not help

Just in case you didn't do it this way, it's not the same, flashing firstly, then wiping, but the reversed way, formatting data, to receive a major update, and search for the fastboot latest version, if it exists, I didn't look for, so I don't know.
@asuna594 Did you somehow fixed that problem? After upgrading to A12 I have similar problems: Often no notifications (like Whatsapp), even after unlocking the phone (I manually have to open WhatsApp to get new messages).
I tried ROM flashing the phone with an official ROM from Xiaomi website. But it did not work. So I got a new phone under warranty. It was a painful experience after buying a new phone.
Oh, great I'll try factory resetting the phone and hope it helps. If not I have to contact Xiaomi... thanks!
I had a lot of problems on A12 from battery, performance, to questionable feature implementations. Downgrading to latest A11 was the most stable option for me, though you will miss out on the security patches and some new features. Maybe you can try Xiaomi.eu or custom ROMs and see if it works for you.
Currently using an Android 13 custom ROM and have almost the same performance and battery usage, if not better than the previous Android 11. Definitely better than stock MIUI A12
Thanks. I just resetted my phone and reinstalled (almost) everything. Will see if it works now... if not I'll also try to find a custom ROM (which might be difficult since I have the 11s, not the 11).

Ah I see. There are little or no development for Mediatek SoC since they don't release the source codes to public. Hopefully the reset will fix the problem
Another thing that might help is to let some apps to run without restrictions, let them autostart, and disabling Battery and Performance either by revocation or ADB to prevent it from being closed. More details on here

Thanks for your link, I will try to remove powerkeeper if my phone is still buggy because of MIUIs aggressive power management
I hope my problems are fixed now, at least most of the time notifications work well. What I did:
- Factory reset
- In Settings I've search for "Special Permissions", went to "Unrestricted Data" and toggled WhatsApp to "on"
- Switched the region of the phone to "India", searched in Settings for "intelligent scenarios" (at least that's the translation german to english) and switched that setting to "off"
- Disabled Memory Extension
Indonesia rom work good
