Hi, after using the Mi 10 Ultra now for some weeks I will share some thoughts.
In short: The hardware (everything from charging to the cameras are simply Amazing) - however, I would not encourage anyone to use it as their "real" phone or phone used for work - at least not if things does not get better with firmware updates.
There are simply to many bugs or limitations that makes it impossible for me to be productive with the phone.
A few examples:
* Google assistant keeps be replaced by Xiaomis own assistant so I have to set it back to my preference several times a day. Not a dealbreaker but very annoying.
* Could not choose my own choice of launcher (Nova) but here I'm a bit grumpy because this turned out to be quite easily solvable (in case it does not give the same annoying behaviour as the assistant-thing)
* Does seem impossible to get RELIABLE notifications to the computer from SMS, Whatsapp etc, no matter what I do with both app specific settings (lik turn of battery optimizations, giving different permissions to the app, allouing autostart etc) AND putting general settings for restriction of mobil OFF, the phone keeps stopping data when display is off
* I have missed an enormeus amount of meetings because somehow the phone does not work with teams and intunes in a good way so all of a sudden I can not log on to intunes or onenote and has to spend 20 minutes on deletion of cach and app data, restarting the phon, sync of principples etc and then it works a few hours again. Completely useless for work. Also here I have gone trough and given permissions for almost everything to see if it helps (and it does not help). To be looked out of online-meetings several times a day because messing with the phone simply just does not work.
* Bluetooth is a trial and error thing when connectring different speakers and handsfrees, tok 3 days until I all of a sudden could pair my WF-1000XM3 with the phone for example. This was however a "one off" and now it works so I can live with that.
The things mentiones above that is connected to work is absolutely no problem on any other phones or tablets I have tried it on (Sony, Samsung, Huawei).
So for now I will put my SIM back in my old phone and use the Mi 10 Ultra as private phone and mainly like a good camera and videoeditor.
I realise it might (with the headline I posted) be posted in the wrong part of the forum.
I guess what I really was hoping for is some input to solutions of the problems I mention because I really WANT to be able to use the phone as my phone.
Install the .EU rom. It solved most of these issues for me:
+ Mi assistent is not in the rom, so Google's assistant will then stick. Overall, all google apps and services work way better when neatly made part of the eco system prior to setup.
+ notifications work out-of-the-box on this rom just about flawlessly. Had problems getting them immediately and on the lockscreen with the original Chinese rom, they work perfect with the EU rom.
+ Teams works fine here, as does contact sync, calander sync, location history etc.
Had no issues with bluetooth in either rom version. Don't use custom launchers, so can't comment on that.
Love this phone!
There's a lot of issues there. Some fixable, but overall it you want a solution... Flash the Xiaomi.eu rom..
Basically I got this phone myself realising it would be a project. Spending around 1k, on a foreign device not guaranteed to work in my country. I knew going in I would almost certainly want to change it from stock. I only mention now because it's possible to do something about it. It's silly to live with so many tiny software problems with such a majestic piece of hardware. To make your phone your daily go-to I think this phone requires a bit of extra work. I consider it a small tax for having the best phone there is.
Nice headphones btw I have the same ones. I cannot cope without them working
One more vote for xiaomi.eu ROM. It is basically the go-to ROM when purchasing a Xiaomi device.
A lot of what OP mentioned is user error combined with the software being a little odd out of the box (but totally fixable). I'm using Lawnchair no problem. Use miui hidden settings to change it.
The notification issue is annoying but all you have to do is open the app settings and mess with the notification settings a little bit. Turn on all the options and set priority to high, you'll never have a problem again.
Google assistant was on my phone and I didn't even install it... In fact I had to go out of the way to tell it to f off.
My bluetooth has worked absolutely fine zero issues. Excellent range and low battery drain.
I love this phone, it can certainly improve in some ways through software updates but the way it is I'm happy with my purchase, even spending $950 for it. Which is the most I've ever spent on a phone by a mile.
Someone's definitely going to reply to me saying "it should just work out of the box". Maybe, but if you want something that "just works" and don't value the extra features buy an iPhone.
I agree.
I don't have any problems at all.
No ads.
Google assistant works perfect, mi assistant I removed through adb
No bluetooth issues aside from the metà data not showing on my car radio.
Pretty happy here.
The thing that could be better would be some notifications icons in the always on display
Can you point me to a guide to remove miui assistant?
My issues are the right swipe notification I would like to be google feed not Chinese.
Swipe up from bottom, same thing, Chinese

Hi, I have actually put all settings to "high", "allowed" or "off" (when it comes to powersaving), but getting notifications or not having apps closed down is still a lottery (although the changes has made the situation a bit better it has not solved the problem).
Has anyone of you that DO NOT have problems tried to use the phone for work with apps like "intunes" and "teams" (because this is the biggest problem to have to reinstall apps like teams, it feels like it must have been to go to war with a "mouth charger" back in the days. Parts of theese problems I have had with Huawei phones also but there it just took some tweaking to get rid of the problems).

This phone is exclusive to the Chinese market and not built with the west in mind at all.
Anyone saying it should just walk out the box, well, unless they're living in China they're being naive and wrong. This is not a device for where we are, it is not supposed to be.
So in that mind I come back to xiaome.eu rom - why would one not take a step to make the phone work better than stock?

Thanks, then I have to go with the EU rom, This thing of spending an hour a day missing meetings and having to reinstall apps, reapprove permissions etc to be able to log in just does not fly.
Guess step one for me then is to unlock the phone.

Absolutely. Unlocking it will threaten to wipe your phone so go through with it as if you're gonna do it.
Because it needs to show you the countdown and then it's a week til you can do anything even if you wanted to

Very.
Hi. I was wondering how did you guys get the google pay to work? When I try to pay, miui card readee is trying to launch. And the assistant, "hey google" doesn't seem to work for me. I am waiting to unlock the bootloader, but made the phone to my liking 80%. Great device but needs some tweaking.

I had this with Nova,I think I ended up.. wait for it.. setting every permission for Nova I could find
The EU ROM uses the same permission style but the reigns are off. I'm glad you know you need to move to that ROM!
Trust me, you don't get these problems with the EU ROM. It's Xiaomi security being a bit too zealous.
They don't officially let you use another launcher. Obviously you get around it by setting it in the launcher you want itself.. but yeah the EU ROM doesn't do this.

Hello there,
I've tried Googling and searching these threads, and I can't seem to find anyone else with the same problems as me, so if anyone can help me I'd be really grateful!
Basically, I've had a rooted G1 for about 6 months now, started off using JesusFreke, went on to CM and now I'm running the latest ROM with an 8 gig class 6 SD card. Anyway, everything runs smoothly except for a few niggly things. As far as I can remember I've always had most of these problems since rooting, and now they're worse than ever and starting to grate. I don't think it's my particular handset, as this is the second G1 I've had - although as I said, I haven't read of these problems with other people, so I don't really know. The problems in question are:
1. Email isn't very 'pushy' anymore - when I first got my G1, and for a while after first rooting, I was amazed at the push Gmail...I loved it, and it often worked faster than my computer email client could retrieve emails with its 5-minute interval. However, now my G1 seemingly only downloads emails when it can be bothered, and more often than not I'll do a manual refresh to find about 6 emails waiting for me. It's somewhat annoying really.
2. This is another major thing: Locale just won't recognise where it is anymore. I'll go into Locale for a few seconds, it'll snap on to 'home' or 'work', I'll come out and after about five minutes, it'll jump straight onto the default settings again. I'll do this again, and it happens again, etc. My phone knows where it is, as the maps work perfectly, and I'll even tried leaving GPS on all day, but to no avail. This is a major annoying niggle, and it seems to get better/worse with different updates. Has anyone experienced this? At the moment, Locale is virtually unusable.
3. Since I'm asking for help, the other little niggle is that to add shortcuts to my desktop takes an age...I'll do the longpress, click 'shortcut'...and then wait. And wait. As far as I can remember my phone's always done this (even the old one), but if anyone knows what I'm doing wrong it'd be really good.
In fact, if anyone can help me with any of the problems I've described I'd be really happy...the email and Locale thing are starting to become a big nuisance, and I'm starting to think about changing my handset over it, despite my love of Android, the G1 and the excellent CM updates that Cyanogen tirelessly sends out.
Thanks so much in advance,
Mark
I've never had any of those issues the gmail issue is the only one that woulg get me... what rom did you go with this time around?
Hi, I've just got the standard CyanognMod ROM with the latest 4.2.9.1
I have the same Gmail problem.
No idea how to fix it.
I'm going to say it's probably two things together:
1. Low memory. Having had your G1 for a while, you've installed lots of apps. Each app uses RAM. Low RAM makes everything sluggish and buggy. Uninstall anything you don't use regularly. Doing a full wipe and reflash of the htc update image, and then the latest cyanogenmod, will give you a blazing fast phone again, with everything working beautifully (but you'll have lost ALL your installed apps, saved sms, settings, etc.).
2. Task-killing app. You probably use Taskiller, Close Everything, or something like that. It is killing Gmail so it doesn't refresh, killing locale's location service so it doesn't know where it is, etc. Make sure you exclude ANYTHING that runs in the background constantly to work. Basically, anything that does something automatically, or generates a notification, or anything. Email, gmail, messaging, etc.
Not cool
You can't say niggly, only we can say niggly.
gmail push
there is a way to 'Set download frequency' by default.

'Niggly' is a word of Scandinavian origin which in this context essentially means 'irritating'. It is in no way related to similarly spelt offensive words, which is what I think you're getting at.
Anyway, many thanks to all those who posted help, I deleted a load of programs and it helped greatly. I had no idea that having too many apps, even in an apps2sd setup, would impact performance that much.
Still can't get Locale to work properly though. I'll delete a few more apps and see if that helps.

+10 pts for being spot on.
Seems once again Sony can't seem to get a stable phone. Shame as it offers so much potential with good design and great specs but failing on software again.
Constant app crashes, phone freezing,
Just goes to show you can't just chuck all the latest bits in a package and think it will work.
Going to have to return this unless there is a sudden fix in the next few days as I only have a 14 day change or mind.
That hasn't been my experience at all. I got the US phone and flashed the UK firmware. I haven't had any issues whatsoever. You should try a factory reset before returning the phone.
I have it for 2 weeks now, no freeze or reboots whatsoever... European Firmware here...
My phone was purchased from O2 in the UK. Don't think there is much bloat on there so don't think it's O2 that's screwed it up.
Phone is completely standard with just a handful of apps on it.
So far I have had numerous '' email has stopped working' to Google stopped working to music not working errors.
OK Google seems to hardly ever work. Almost seems like it can't hear the hot word.
I also think that many of the push services are being put to sleep which is why the battery life is so could as I often don't get notifications until I wake the phone yet the same accounts on my old s3 always come through first.
So far had one update come out for the phone. Don't know if it's the latest firmware though.
I can totally not agree with you.
Well I guess all I can do is try reset then but it's such a pain in the ar#e putting all your info back in again.

Does the launcher you use rebuild your home screens after a reset? I still use Google Now Launcher, and after a reset, when I reinstall GNL, everything is put back in its proper place, even web browser page links.
I am using the US firmware, and have not experienced any of the problems you mention. You may have a defective unit. Then again, if you're not happy with the phone for other reasons (and there certainly are things that could be better), you certainly don't want to wait past the return date!
I'm running the UK firmware with the US OEM file to have Volte and fingerprint sensor on T-Mobile and has been rock solid since day one. I would reset.
Have reset the phone and just setting it back up.
Will see how it goes over the next few days.
One thing I did think that was odd previously when it was playing up was when it would crash and reset itself was that when it started up it was on the Google keyboard set up screen. I had installed the Google keyboard as I preferred it to SwiftKey. Maybe the issues were linked to that somehow.
Wow too many errors there... Probably a faulty unit... Or maybe u should do a software repair with Sony pc companion
Don't forget it runs Android Orea 8.0 by means a lot of third party apps may not fully compatible at this moment, consider not many phones running Oreo hence the app developers are not in hurry to tweak their app to run smooth in Oreo. That's what causes the occasional app crashes I believe.
OK so after the full reset and initial impressions are good. Seems smooth with no crashes. I'm back running nova launcher (previously instilled this as thought it might be linked) ive also not installed Google keyboard yet and giving SwiftKey a go.
Only issue that really remains is the one with the ambient sensor. Find my self having to switch the adaptive brightness off at night when using the phone as it jumps around. Need to then switch it back in on the day where it seems fine. Hopefully a fix comes for this soon.

No single reboot or app crash for me.
The only thing that crashes on me on occasion is Google Photos, other than that, rock solid so far.
Just had an a 3rd party app crash but as someone mentioned above it might be because the developer has not updated yet for oreo???
Other than that been much better so far

Same for me. 3 weeks i have got it 100% stable.:good:
Uhm ok I guess now it's my turn.
Today the "touch" went crazy. 2 times. Like for example keeping pressing recent button ? will result in multiple touches. Basically every touch is not a "pressing" touch. So I can't do swiping or other keep pressing relative touching. First time happened, a reboot fixed. Second time nothing worked. I have to SHUT DOWN THE PHONE AND WAIT A LITTLE BIT, then turn it on and everything was OK...
Is it just me?
P.s. UPDATE: I tried everything, safe mode, total reset, even software repair through PC companion...nothing. Its obviously a hardware problem, not software related. I returned this morning to assistance. They should give it back to me within a week...
My first week with XZ1C, 100% working, perfect, no reboot or other problems. One of the best phones I ever bought...
Phone's stable, no software/hardware issues. Working away reliably, battery consistently giving me expected results (ending day with 25%-50%, depending on use), connectivity perfect, performance smooth as butter.
Well.... the device still runs pretty good, but I'm afraid soon my two favorite apps will lose compatibility cuz the OS is too old... I like it because of the screen size is the minimum acceptable to be able to read music on it...
So, is out there anything newer than the stock 4.4.2 OS ? Anything ?
Should I resign and accept that soon enough I will be better off throwing it away ? At this point I am becoming more and more of a "I just want to use" than a tinkerer... at the same time I hate discarding good things so I usually keep them until their death - in this case, "inability to breath"
but let me hear what you know.
Thanks.

I've been using a Nougat ROM on this tablet for a couple of years, really stable. Haven't heard about more recent ROMs though.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/transformer-tf701/orig-development/rom-t3540259
Thank you. Do you have all the essential features working alright ? For example, I connect a bluetooth pedal to turn music pages; then i also use Google Drive to import the songs I want to the app, so evidently, WiFi is also essential to me
I dont care for camera or anything else, so, is BT and WIFI running fine for you ? Thank you.
Well....... once I ran the ASUS bootloader unlock and it rebooted, I knew I was already screwed cuz the damn **** wiped everything ..... so I bit the bullet and went ahead and installed everything: new custom recovery, the Katkiss and went ahead... seems that everything is working though I havent tested BT just yet.
WIFI is working just fine, I reinstalled my previous apps. Will test the BT pedal tomorrow, but so far, looks great ! This should get me running for another 4-5 years LOL
Thanks again for the link. I will go ahead and donate to that guy who made the 7.0.1 thing for us.
Confirmed BT works fine.
I'm glad someone else asked this. What ROM did you go with and what do you think of it ?
I used the ROM that is in this thread to replace the stock kitkat (is that what it was before ?) This rom: https://forum.xda-developers.com/tra...t/rom-t3540259
The only two (three?) things I noticed:
1 ) The battery runs faster than on the old original firmware, however, it can be drastically "enhanced" by using "Battery Doctor".
2) Cannot connect anymore to the laptop or any other charger - it simply will not charge from anywhere else that is not the original wall charger.
3) I have not tested the camera simply because, I really don't see a use case for a camera on a tablet - we all have a nice smartphone in our pockets, right ?
What I like, is that everything is quite simple and clean; the home key and those other soft keys at the bottom, stay "On" and have an extra set of useful keys.
I had no problem "updating the tablet" following the steps.

It works (almost) fine. I'm afraid to say that I have bad news for you ... =
I tried three different camera apps, starting with the "Open camera" and no joy - it says that "the camera seems to be in use by another application" and gives up.
Then I tried two others that came first in the Play Store and got the same kinda of message about not being able to connect to the camera.
Sorry for you who needs the camera - for my own use, it's became good enough.

Thanks for testing..
I have to ask this. I needed a new phone a month ago, and I chose to wait for this one instead of getting a Note 9, and now I still don't have a usable phone and have less than 20 days to return this one. When I did my research about my next phone I was told that Sony phones are developer-friendly and tend to have a clean Android experience, on top of that, this phone has a 3.5mm jack with a great DAC. Now I come to find out that not only does this phone come with bloatware/spyware, even though you can root it, in Android 10, OEMs have the system locked down as read-only, and while Magik can gimmick /system to remove apps, there is no way to delete apps installed in /oem.
Placing apps in a directory that is impossible to change is inexcusable, especially when they are:
1) A game no one wanted which will be irrelevant in 6 months
2) A FREE TRIAL APP
3) A social media application not everyone uses
It isn't by mistake that Sony did this, and it tells me that the pittance they get from Activision, Jay Z, and Microsoft matters more to them than I do as a customer. Some will say that it is possible to simply de-activate the apps, at least unlike Facebook, there are no background services still running and collecting your data, but I say that is irrelevant. I own my phone; I should be able to control what's on it.
I was still running Android 8 on my One Plus 3T that recently died, so I'm not familiar with how Android works today. We went from simple to hard, to harder. There is A/B, no more stock recovery, and apparently fastboot is dead and is replaced by a blank bootloader flash mode that only lets you know you are in it with a tiny blue LED? I don't know how viable TRWP and Linage are on a phone like this, which is why I am asking. There is only one thing I know for sure right now: I don't have much time to wait for custom ROMs built from the ground up to develop and mature.
You can disable verity and delete them. However, even if you could remove them, they'll just keep coming back with updates. Just disable them and move on with life.
LineageOS is pointless because you're going to lose the Sony camera. Why spend $1,200 if you're going to do that? At that point, just get a Pixel 4a for $350.
Some will say that it is possible to simply de-activate the apps, at least unlike Facebook, there are no background services still running and collecting your data, but I say that is irrelevant. I own my phone; I should be able to control what's on it.

You totally can. Again, this is about dm-verity, which most custom roms disable and spoof to appear enabled. However, if you're gonna do this on the official rom, it'll be your job to pretty much delete every single piece of bloatware every time you update your phone. It's much easier to simply disable the packages because the disable setting is retained through updates.
There is A/B, no more stock recovery

Welcome to pretty much every single device since Pixel 3. This is a Google thing, and has nothing to do with Sony.
apparently fastboot is dead and is replaced by a blank bootloader flash mode that only lets you know you are in it with a tiny blue LED?

Okay, I'll give you this one. Sony did a piss-poor job here. It took me several hours to figure out that:
Vol. Up + Insert USB cable = blue led = fast boot, for which you need to manually install the Google fastboot driver.
Vol. Down + Insert USB cable = green led = download mode, for NewFlasher flashing.
The only indicator is the blue/green LED, which indicates the various modes.
For future reference, I flashed the RU region firmware and it only came with 1 bloatware: Yandex. Best thing about it is, you can uninstall Yandex. So basically I have the 1 II without bloatware! (Except Facebook, but I use it anyway)

First of, thanks for being cool with your response
Second, I bought this phone for a few reasons, and the camera isn't one of them. For any given phone I want:
1) For it to be unlockable so I can install whatever recovery/kernel/OS I want on it. There aren't many phones like that anymore, at least not in the US.
2) Hardware that will last me at least four years.
3) A 3.5mm headphone Jack with a good DAC.
4) A good, large, color-accurate display.
5) Fingerprint reader.
5) Expendable storage (or a LOT of onboard storage and OTG as a compromise).
I have been using the menu button on the left and back button on the right for eight years now, and I can't fix that on this phone

Honestly, the only updates I care about are security updates. If we get lineage or some other mature ROM that can do most of what I want, I'll ditch stock., I only need stock for now. If I do end up updating stock and getting those apps back, I don't mind spending another 5 minutes removing them after the update. I don't like disabled apps for three reasons:
1) If it doesn't disable background services. If you just disable Facebook, Facebook's other services will still keep tracking you and selling your personal information.
2) They still appear in the app menus and stuff, which I hate. It pisses me off seeing COD and a TRIAL for something I'll never, ever, use.
3) I am 99.9% some vulnerability can't exploit them, but I can be 100% sure if they aren't there.
As for why this is all the way it is, I did learn after the fact that it is mostly Google's BS and not Sony. Still, it sucks. I hope I can maybe flash DM variety and disable it on stock.
If I can disable DM variety I'm keeping the phone. If I can't and it doesn't seem like we'll get TWRP and Lineage then I guess I'm getting an Exynos Note 9. I really don't want to though, but those OEM apps WILL haunt me every time I use my phone, touch my phone, think about my phone, or am otherwise reminded I own this phone. Maybe I'm crazy, but that's irrelevant, because that's how it is.
I tried to flash dm variety and disable verification, etc, and it didn't unlock the system, so until TRWP comes to Android 10, it looks like stock in the US is out.

You are a god. I looked at the Russian firmware and it doesn't look like it's been dirtied by crazy Putin. You can systemlessy remove all the apps you don't want. I got Magisk and Xposed working on it. I also have 4G on t-mobile, and it lists 5GNR as an option, which the US version did not. To note, I do not have VoLTE or Wifi Calling (not that I care).
I'm going to try and flash the HK dual sim variant just to see if I can unlock the mythical sex sim slot, and also if also fits the bill. I realized that to test dual sim you need a dual sim tray. There is no way to get the Q51 tray to work for this. It doesn't seem that people are selling replacement parts for this phone yet, so right now I can't buy a Q2 tray to test it. I'll circle back around to this in a few months when it becomes time to flip the phone for a Q2, just to see if maybe I don't have to do that.
Thanks everyone for the replies. We could maybe use this as a general TRWP/LineageOS update thread, though I suspect someone will make a new thread as those pass certain milestones.
I've had the 11t pro for a little more than 2 months and even though it's not the best device out there, it does a pretty good job for a budge phone with such specs(in my opinion)
a few things I've noticed and not sure if others share the same frustration are:
after upgrading to miui 13.0.4 I noticed in top left corner (mic/cam)icons that show up when I open any app using them...any way to disable them?
when playing a game, I noticed phone sometimes lags so badly(though it's not a demanding game, visual wise) and I can't even have a whatsapp video call while playing without phone going terribly slow until I end the game.
sometimes out of the blue, the phone becomes super laggy even with no apps running, and I can't figure out what is causing it, so I end up restarting it.
if anyone has noticed anything else or has got any tips/tricks please share
p.s: is it doable to flash an eu rom on a device with global rom? I was told difference between both is google pay on european which doesn't exist on global, but I have it on mine.

The mic and camera icons is an Android 12 security feature to let you know when you might be listened to or seen, and I don't think it can be removed.
No idea regarding the game and slow downs. Sometimes with a major version change it is better to factory reset and set up from scratch, so that might help.
Yes you can flash different ROMs from other regions. The IMPORTANT thing is if your device came with a Global ROM and you unlock your bootloader and flash the Europe ROM, then you must not lock the bootloader again, if you do it will brick your device. You can put back the original Global ROM then lock again.
Hope that help.s

After updating from 12.5.21 to 13.0.9 I have experienced lags in various situation as well. After that I unlocked bootloader and flashed xiaomi.eu 13.0.4, but it's not much better. Now I'm thinking about downgrading to xiaomi.eu 12.5.10 or stock 12.5.21, that worked very well.

I use xiaomi Eu rom without any problem.
it is preferable for the first installation to use the script "windows_fastboot_first_install_with_data_format" then for the updates"windows_fastboot_update_rom.bat".

I know that It was clean installation. On stock with MIUI 13 I had the same problems.
I'm now on version 13.0.9, jumped to this version from 12, clean installation. What I'm finding is Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turnoff around 23:30 each night, this seems to be some deliberate power saving function when the phone detects the person is likely asleep, and I can see in my access point log exactly when Wi-Fi disassociates and turns off, only turning on again in the morning when I unlock the phone. This may be related to having DND turned on using the schedule option, this is set from 22:00, but I have this set to still be disturbed by my contacts, so need Wi-Fi to remain connected. This all worked fine on version 12.
I can't see any settings under Wi-Fi or battery management to disable this. Anyone else seeing the same thing or have a solution?

Did some more Googling, found others having the exact same issue, see
https://www.reddit.com/r/miui/comments/tlxjjh
Appears to be a deliberate power saving feature, where the option to disable it, due to a bug or oversight, isn't available.
What is it with Xiaomi and their excessive battery saving modes.
wouldn't you find it under battery settings?

That appears to be the bug in that the options to disable it are missing. There are no settings anywhere to disable it.
