Had anyone else noticed a Pixel 4 XL battery that's generally fine until it hits about 30% and then plummets to zero within minutes? Seems to be happening all the time at the moment. Any suggestions on how to solve this?

From personal experience with Google and battery issues, I'll tell you this...
Do a factory reset or better yet flash the next monthly update using the factory image with the -w still in the script to force the full wipe. If this does not fix the problem then your due a warranty claim in my opinion. They will tell you to do all this as part of the troubleshooting anyway and you'll probably have to go through the motions regardless but it'll at least give you a better idea where you stand before jumping through their hoops!

This is good advice. If a factory reset doesn't help, I'd see about a warranty claim as well. The Pixel 4XL is a good phone but while the battery life isn't one of it's strong suits, I've never seen anything like you describe. They are pretty good about replacing a bad phone after the usual troubleshooting. It's a pain but worth the trouble.
This looks exactly like what was happening on the Nexus 6P phones. This is the first case that I've seen on the pixel like though. It was so widespread on the Nexus 6P line that there is a class action suit still going on. I had three of those phones with this issue. As CyperpodS2 said a factory reset should be your first option. I doubt it will help if it is a hardware problem but Google will require you to do that before the will RMA your phone anyway.
Thanks guys. Tried a factory reset but it has just done exactly the same thing as before. Gets to about 30-29% and then drops within a matter of seconds to zero and turns off. I'll phone my carrier today to see how they respond to this. I'll let you know how I get on.
Oh and here is the battery history.
Good luck. You shouldn't have any trouble getting a replacement.
Crap! Me too! Everything was fine and then all of a sudden battery is dead. I also have issues charging to 100% using my wireless charger but maybe it's the charger. The sudden death at 30% battery just started happening. I did install the latest February update and don't remember it doing this before then. Up until now I've been really happy with battery life.
I've been hitting 30% and lower recently due to changing when I charge the phone. I have not seen a sudden drop once I reach 30% and I have battery saver turn on automatically at 25% and can get hours out of that. To be honest, since I deleted facebook account my phones have always had better battery live than friends with the same device. It was the first thing I noticed about removing FB/Messenger, I went to a single charge for 1.5 days.
Just to update. Google did replace my Pixel XL without any issues. I didn't get any feedback on the phone I sent, but I assume the fact that they haven't charged me anything suggests that they did find a problem. Hope you get your issue sorted out @SnrSuave and that these are isolated problems.
I've been doing some testing and trying to recalibrate the battery. Seems to be better now. I let the battery run down completely empty and then fully charge while turned off. Last night I got the battery down to 10% without it dropping fast.
My experience last days
Once it didn't load over 15% (display bug)
All is fine after complete empty device
Good to hear others are solving their issues. I had run my battery down and charged fully a few times, but didn't improve things for me. Hopefully just one of those random issues that happen from time to time. replaced device running well. :good:
I had the same **** with my 3xl.
In the end i RMA it.....

I am facing serious shutdown issues . My nexus 6(MB,64GB) keeps shutting down unexpectedly . This happens while playing a game or even while calls. Any suggestions ??
this should not be in the general sections, but in the Q/A help section...
have you tried reflashing the stock img?
I had some major issues like that after updating to 5.0.1. I'm on cm now but if you flash back to stock it should fix things too

Stock Nexus 6, or are you using custom stuff?
stock out of the box nexus... happens usually while playing high end games. Happened twice during calls :/ 3rd week into the phone . Usually the battery saver turns on moments before phone shuts down . some times just goes poof.

Happened to me too today.got n6 on 11th Dec.initially reboots started then after 2 weeks of observations I turned off ambient display and now random shut downs..
Phone turned off on 14 % battery just when I picked up an incoming call..then again turned off when there was a call..really fed up of this issue..
Don't know if its a hardware or software issue..
backup your phone, reflash stock img completely, and test without restoring apps.

I've never had a random reboot but I have had the random shutdown issue. This was running stock 5.0.1 with stock kernel. Also had the same occurrence on CleanRom with stock kernel (this is basically a stock rom/kernel with a few tweaks. Another user recommended flashing LeanKernel which I did and haven't had a problem since. This random shutdown was happening roughly once per day. I have been running strong for almost a week now I'd say. I always am the guy to run custom roms and kernels myself anyways but I actually don't mind the stock rom so flashing the kernel was no big deal to me. There are a few threads on this subject if you search the forums. I too am hoping this isn't hardware related since it's always a pita dealing with RMA.
Is there anything new onto that? Any possible solutions? Same issue for me, generally happens during calls ... :/
hmm strange, i never had any shutdowns, could be either your rom or kernel your on. make sure the kernel your using with ur rom is compatible

I was just looking for this.
Mine started doing the same.
I have the battery saver set to 5%, but it never turns on!
The phone shuts off between 10% and 5%.
The battery saver turns on for only for a few seconds(if at all) and the phone shows the powering off animation.
Connecting the charger and turning the phone on, after booting shows 8% already.
Its not normal, because i remember having my phone at 1% without any problems for tests when i got it in November...
For the last few weeks i never went lower than 25% so i don't know when this started, but since i found this out(5 days ago), i tried it every day and it happens like clockwork. Flashed the factory image back has no effect( i was on stock anyways).
Hoping not to have a replacement to save the cost of my dbrand and screen protector...
I give it one more week and if it doesn't change i call Moto. I have MotoCare so replacement should be easy.

Hi guys,
My 2 month old nexus 6 is powering down unexpectedly. Random shut downs (not reboots). Thought it was snap chat was the culprit (read a few articles how some 3rd party camera apps can cause lollipop to power down) but the phone shuts down even after uninstalling all suspicious apps.
Any advice or suggestions will be highly appreciated
Devs please help
I'm starting to really wonder if these "turbo chargers" are causing major degradation to the batteries. The phone will shut down when the battery *voltage* drops below a specific threshold, regardless of what the percent display is actually at.
Another thing to consider is that adding a significant load to a battery will cause it to read a lower voltage, even if that load does NOT immediately deplete the battery, those who notice this happening when running a very demanding game could be experiencing this. I would suspect though, that this will only be an issue if the battery level is already fairly low.
Any update on this?
5% is still my dead-spot and nothing i tried helps...
I just ordered my nexus but my s5 (current phone) randomly reboots. We figured it was due to volte. Turned that off on the s5 and no issues so far. Was really tired of it and the reason I'm going to nexus. That and the bigger screen

Same issue here...
It must be caused by a bad batch of battery defects, Factory reset or re-flash factory image won't fix it... To get a replacement from Google seems to be the right way...

I use to have this issue. However, it has not happened since I started using Franco kernel. Multiple people have had the problem resolved by changing kernels. That leads me to believe that it is software related rather than hardware. Other benefits of flashing Franco for me is I can now use the built in led for notifications and I am using double tap to wake.

My battery issue happened after I kept using Franco for a while...then I switched back to elementalX or stock kernel, nothing resolved...
if the back cover doesn't peel off or the battery doesn't start to expand, it might be a good sign that it is just a software issue.
Otherwise, battery defect could be happening already, as in my case...
Changing kernels fixed my issue which was the phone shutting down on its own randomly. I guess some of you are experiencing a different problem.

Just a little update.
I did an advanced replacement with motorola.
Did it over chat on sunday, received the new phone on wednesday from texas.
Deposit was 500+tax.
The phone was brand new unopened box. Cloud White 64GB
The package had a box and a prepaid label to send the bad phone back.
The box was too small to fit a nexus 6, so i had to modify it a bit.
It was probably for the moto X or smaller.
Sent the phone back on Friday, they got it on Monday, and my money was back.
Everything looks great, the new phone can go down to 1% no problem.
The new turbo charger does not have the electrical noise that the old one has.
That may caused the battery problem. Using it since last Wednesday, and no problems so far.
The advanced replacement was great and easy, if i have to i would do it again, although in 3 months its gonna be a refurb device not a now.
Mine was in mint condition, had dbrand on and no scratches. The person who will get it after me will be happy with that refurb device
And i am happy with my new phone.
If the HTC M9 will have a GPE edition i might switch
I've been having an issue with my Moto X XT1092 lately where the phone will turn off despite android 5.1 showing the percentage on anywhere from 5% to 15%.
I've tried draining the battery right down, even to when the secret "your battery is seriously dead" LED turns on, then charging it right back up to 100% without booting it. I also used a power meter to see when it actually stopped pulling a current too. That worked for about 2 weeks but now it's turning off when there's 10% left again.
Spoke to motorola and all they could say was factory reset the device because system updates can cause this issue.
Has anyone else had this problem? Does anyone have a fix that isn't a full restore? If not, did a restore fix your issue?
I have noticed that as well. I originally did a reformat when I got 5.1.0 and mine does it so Im thinking there might be something else going on. Until reading this post from you I thought it was just my battery getting old....which could be the case as well.

I don't think it's down to age, the new X's are only a year or so old, batteries should last much longer. I think it's a bug in the OS, perhaps something stopping the software from reading the hardware accurately?
My device is unrooted
Everything was going great until the newest update that came last week. Since this my battery life has gone down hill fast. I feel like I'm back on my G1.
I have two questions is anyone else having this issue at all?
My other question is all my previous phones have had SD card spots so when I reset myphone all my pictures are stored there. If I reset myphone do I lose all my pictures?
Battery life has been good for me on that build and the recent fi build as well. Do you have a secondary battery meter like better battery stats? There is no sd card in the phone so yes that would be lost.
of course you can check why your battery times have dropped.. like maybe a stuck process or a certain app draining battery. im nearly 100% sure its not because of the update, but it can be user related. your signal quality could be worse as well, which will also drain battery faster.

When I feel my phone getting hot or I notice the drain is going on I turn off my phone let it set to cool down or I just straight up restart it.
I live a pretty routine based life, Work, Church, Gym, Home.... So my signal life hasn't changed. My usage hasn't gone up or down....but my battery has since that update.
I do have battery apps to keep an eye on things. Display is number (of course) and number 2 which isn't normal is Android OS.

well, what ive found out iver the years that im with android is that battery apps are pointless, and end up using your battery. just check you regular battery usage/stats. nobody uses their phones the exact same way every single time, its impossible. and when you are out, walking around, or driving, your signal quality will change, constantly. and apps, many times they will get a process stuck, and drain much more battery than normal. and then there is google play services, that will occasionally drain lits of battery, especially when its updating itself. in reality, there are numerous other reasons, besides the update, that will make you battery drain quicker. too numerous to list, lol.

my battery also has been going deep underground after last security update! nothing changed in the usage or the number of apps that i keep installed, so the suspect that the drain depends on the update in my opinion is becoming more and more real.
i also keep checking battery's stats and there isn't any anomaly or discrepancy compared to pre-update's stats.
I am in the same boat. I was using about 2-3 percent an hour before the security patch. But since the patch dropped I've been averaging about 10 percent an hour. I have to recharge at least once in the middle of the day. None of my apps changed.
Same here, noticeable difference in battery performance since last weeks update. Only change to apps is I am now using Google fit since last week, thought it was that but battery stats say otherwise.

So last night I backed up all my pictures on my computer and the cloud. Tonight I will reset my phone before bed Ill have a better idea of what it will do tomorrow. It kinda stinks because I have this zooper/launchy/popup widget masterpiece going on my homescreen
Ill report back....
I have noticed the same issue since the OTA patch. Reminded me of my old Galaxy S where it would not go into deep sleep after being unplugged at a full charge without a reboot. I've gone without a reboot and with rebooting since the update and my phone is much better off after a reboot. About 7% per hour lost without compared to about 3-4% per hour lost with a reboot. Pretty consistent usage on a daily basis. Just my personal observation. I'm on AT&T though.
I got better battery life after the update... But then it went back to normal. I was being about 30 to 45 minutes extra SOT but now I'm back to my average times of 4-4:15 hours

Take this for what it is.... I wake up at 545 grab my phone since the update by the time I get to work 7am it would be 96 or below.... I reset my phone last night and the phone seems back to normal at 99%-98%when I sit at my desk..... All apps reloaded and working before bed.....
My N6 is worse off for battery too after OTA update of last week. Seems like Google Services has just gotten a lot more aggressive doing what it is supposed to be doing. I hope Marshmallow will fix this.

Hello everyone,
I have been using a Xperia Z1 for around last 6 months and updated to Lollipop 5.1.1 two months ago. Everything was fine until last week when my phone started to get affected by the battery bug.
The phone works fine and the battery gets discharged in leaps. For example, when I use the phone from 100%, it goes down in the usual way, let's say for 1 hour usage it drops up to 90% which is quite normal. But, when lock the screen and keep it idle for sometime and when I take it back, the battery has dropped a leap, usually by 10-15%.
Yesterday, I was using the phone normally and kept it idle for the entire night and battery has been dropped only from 85% to 79% without stamina mode. That's good. However, when I restarted the phone in the morning, the battery suddenly dropped to 18%. :crying:
I tried calibrating the battery, charging/discharging cycles and removing batterystats.bin. But, the issue is still here.
I think my phone has been affected by the famous Xperia battery bug in Lollipop which means that my battery is damaged. But, before replacing the battery is there anything else that I could do to overcome the issue. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
+ My phone is rooted on stock 5.1.1 (14.6.A.0.368) with XZDualRecovery and locked bootloader. If I repair the phone with PCC will it cause any harm or bricking since because of the customer recovery?
Claiming warranty is out of option since the phone has been rooted and flashed with custom recovery.
I don't know why people call it a lollipop bug. There will be a time a battery reaches its end of live. That's what has hit you right now. Your descripte symptoms are from a dying battery. I have seen some dying battery's from me or friends. The battery was holding the charge normally and suddenly no more.
Replace it and all should be fine again.

But, can this happen on a phone that is just 7 months old? Thats what makes me to think that this could be a bug.

It's okay for a 2 year old phone as Lithium batteries wear out with time. In my case, it's kinda disappointing...
So, after searching the entire Internet, I can understand that this is a common issue with Xperia Z1 and Z1 compact and replacing the battery seems to be the only possible solution. I searched EBay for a battery but couldn't choose a good quality one. Can someone guide me on this please?

Your battery is definitely dying and it has nothing to do with roms. Get a battery that the seller claims to be OEM. That's your best bet...

You are correct becouse I experience som drops in the range of 5-20% in less than a minute and once 30%. All the time while the phone was in standby mode except once where it did it right in my face (10%). My battery status is reported being fine. I also forced shutdown the phone as per the calibration method for non-rooted phones. Though I did notice dalvik cache wasn't rebuilt and so there is no way to have it refreshed manually except system updates which does this.
Anyway I did remove some apps and did some changes and after this I have not had any sudden drop for weeks. Two of the apps where Truecaller and Facebook official app. Will check though if it was a third one to. I believe one of these or both where playing havok. Especially the Facebook app as it takes liberties I find suspicious, is buggy, can crash the kernel (any app that can do that is doing shady work IMO) and had the addition of a "Video Player" service that was running permanently after you launch the FB app once. I instead use Metal for Facebook now. Pretty much same experience, only 10MB RAM used instead of 90MB and no batter y drain either or any other problem. So in short I believe one of these where the culprits and since many use the FB app that might be the one playing badly with Sony Z1 system.
And If you use Adguard also check if there are apps getting high ratio of ads blocked (or analytics data blocked). Might be some dont get proccessed right in the battery system due to it calculating it wrong. Google Frameworks, Google Contacts, Play Services, Mobilestorage Checker and a few more I disabled the ad filtering for. Though this did not change the battery drop problem previously. It only went away when I uninstalled named apps above.
For about a month now, my watch is only charging to about 50% even after a full night on the cradle. This hasn't been a real issue, because it doesn't drop below 40% throughout the day, but it does make me curious.
I'm on build number M1D64S. I haven't seen anything mentioned of this here on XDA. Not much traffic in this forum these days, but I wanted to check to see if anyone's noticed this. I tried resetting it, but that hasn't fixed the glitch. I'd say it was a spent battery if it charged up all the way and rapidly lost its life, but it's weird that it just charges to 50%. Any ideas?
Using my G935P S7 Edge
I too have been experiencing this problem for about 2 months now. As the watch still functions OK I've been putting off doing a factory reset. However, I managed to accidentally fix mine by letting the watch discharge completely then allowing it to charge again fully. The battery level now reads correctly.
Edit: I have the same build number as you. If this hadn't worked I was going to try flashing an older build to see if that fixed it. Good luck!
Thanks for the tip! I'll try to drain it and see how that goes. Glad it worked out for you. I bought this thing shortly after it's release, so it's had a decent run for a first gen smart watch. I was afraid it was starting to reach its end, and I don't have money falling out of my pockets to buy a replacement.
Using my G935P S7 Edge
@SenatorSupes that ended up fixing my issue completely. Posting her to thank you again and let people know who might be searching for a fix.
LG watch charges stuck at 50%
Even easier fix. Power off your watch, put it on the charging cradle, it will reboot and show the proper charge. Fix.
