[Q] KFHD 7" 2nd - Rooting & General Questions:(Prime Instant Video, Google Music...)
Hello community,
I am planning to get the KFHD 7" 2nd Generation (Soho) device basically because it is available for only 79 EUR right now.
I would like a device to watch Amazon straming video, listen to my music on Google and anwer my mails (GMail). Before I buy the KF I have a couple questions which are related to my future usage.
I would like to run all of the following apps together:
- Amazon Prime Instant Video (German Version)
- Google Play Music
- Gmail
As far as I understand rooting the device is pretty risky. Nevertheless root seems to be necessary in order to install and run the Google apps.
Will Prime Instant Video still work after rooting and / or installing the google apps? Maybe even after installing the Google Play store?
Do I have to change the appstore first to Google (Install Google and other Apps) and then back to Amazon (for Video streaming)?
Will Google Play Music work if I set the appstore to be Amazon?
What procedure / method should I use? I found the rooting guide at: kfsowi.com
Thanks for your help...

Rooting gives you access to the roots. It will allow you to uninstalled bloat and add Google Play. Rooting does not effect the features that are stock with the tablet. It's custom ROM's that will remove Amazon Prime playback abilities. Your fine to root and keep all the goodies afforded by Amazon and add some of your own. That said, rooting is becoming harder for this tablet. I would message Gran PC and make sure a root exploit still exists. Only his firerooter has worked on the 2013 KFHD. good luck.

Thank you for the answer. That's good to hear...
Did you actually test root and Amazon streaming video together?
I read somewhere else that it doesn't work together. (http://www.geek.com/gadgets/amazon-video-broken-on-rooted-kindle-fire-1442047/)
It might be a different version / firmeware /etc...
I installed cm-11-20141218 on my Nook HD plus. It's my first root. Everything went smoothly.... except in Google play movies it says 'Playback isn't supported on this device' when trying to stream my movies and shows (same issue in Disney Movies). All other Google apps appear to be working fine. However, I can download and watch or cast and watch, but both options produce very low quality images (I do have the HD download option set). Normally the Nook HD plus has great video playback quality. Ironically I can now watch 1080p videos in YouTube (but not purchased videos).
I was hoping that someone might have a simple fix.... thanks.
Sir,
Please wait until mods will move this thread to the device specific forum.

I don't watch videos there, but I suspect they don't work on rooted devices, so you need an app that hides your root status. I don't know exact name, you can search on Google.

Trying to find a way to screen mirror with a Fire HD 8 (6th Generation) running 5.3.2.1 (no root). Pretty happy with the device, but this is a major let down that I can't seem to find a way to simply mirror what is on screen on the tablet to a smart tv.
I have had some success with several apps that allow me to mirror Movies, Music, and Web to the smart tv, but nothing I have found let's me see what is on screen exactly (or at least start any app and mirror that. App chooses are limited) I would love to play some of the non-App Store games I have loaded onto the device on my big screen. Seems like Amazon has taken away the ability to wirelessly or wired screen mirror. Disappointing to see feature disappear and the version of the OS seems to be un-rootable as of now.
Looking for ANY app or device that can enable this.

Looks like a no-go until root is secured on FireOS 5.3.2.1 for your device (even then no assurances): https://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=201829500
Anyone have experience running Chrome Remote Desktop from a Fire 7, latest model?
I'm using my original Nook Color rooted with CM 10.2.1 for a single purpose, sitting on a table next to the LR couch and running Chrome Remote Desktop to control an upstairs Windows desktop that is streaming SiriusXM music, playing to my AV system in the LR through a Bluetooth faux-headphone receiver. Remote Control allows me to skip music I don't like, to change XM stations, and to control other functions that would normally require me to walk upstairs to the desktop. It's a great setup and has been serving that purpose for several years, with one exception. The Nook Color is so short on resources that if anything else is going on in the device, the remote desktop session will fail. I have removed everything that I can, but with less than half a gig of memory and a single slow processor, it just isn't up to the task. Hence the question.
I understand, of course, that I would have to install Google Play to get remote desktop. I have also tried other old tablets and phones running other remote control apps such as Splashtop, TeamViewer, and others, some of which work OK, but I find that Chrome Remote Desktop is by far the best, and the little Nook (also 7 inch) is just the right size for this.
And, while I'm asking, I don't suppose the Fire 7 has IR capability, so I could potentially use it to control the various components in the AV system?
So before I invest the incredible sum of $50 in the Fire 7, I would like to make sure that this will work.
Thanks in advance, DaveD

- No IR on any Fire tablet
- The implementation of Google Play Services available for this device may not support Chrome Remote Desktop
- You can not obtain root permissions or install a custom ROM on the shipping versions of 5th-7th gen Amazon devices; nor can they be downgraded. This may place significant limitations on customizing your setup...if it works at all.
- Consider a 3rd gen HDX if interested in unlocked 7 inch tablet with adequate resources and strong custom ROM support.

Thanks for the quick reply.
Stock rooting or a custom rom would not be options for me even if it were available. I'm at the point now where I want to run these Android devices, not work on them. A used HDX might be an option; thanks for that.
There are a number of entries here indicating that Google Play can be installed on the latest 5.4.0.0 and no mention of any limitations. Can you provide additional information on your statement?
Thanks, DaveD

Most only use "Google Play" for store access and snagging a few treasured apps. Your application is somewhat unique but many work fine...or not. My caveat was simply a heads-up. Best path IMHO is to acquire the device from Amazon which offers a nearly unconditional 30 day return return policy. They even subsidize return shipping in the US; $2.98 for most Amazon devices.
Also consider a HD 8 if you have no plans to root. A nicer device overall but more expensive and a bit larger; I happen to prefer the 7" form factor for my purposes.

I will try a 7". I'm an Amazon Prime member and have found their return policy to be more than adequate. I'll post my results in this thread. Thanks for the help.

Update: Ordered the Fire 7 yesterday evening from Amazon, Prime, received it before noon today, even quicker than their usual two day prime guarantee. And it was $39.99, $10 off, as they gave me a courtesy discount because they messed up an order last week. Can't beat that!
Using the instructions in the XDA link I referenced above, I installed Google Play in about an hour, with most of that time taken up with finger checks and learning how to get around the Fire, ads and all. Before I installed Google Play I had first installed Chrome Remote Desktop from a Titanium Backup on the Micro SDCard that was once attached to the Nook Color, but it wouldn't run without Google Play.
Once I installed Google Play it works like a charm. Whether or not it crashes like it does on the Nook (there, I suspect, because of limited resources) remains to be seen. But so far, so good.
Thanks again for the information. DaveD

I ran Remote Desktop on my HD 8 for a bit when I first got it, with no problem. I use Unified Remote, because if I watch shows or movies, I usually just place them on the tablet, as VLC works perfectly and I have good headphones. I have used for years and continue to use Pandora Music. I just got a hold of another HD 7 (my original one has a busted display), but it's rooted and I really don't have intentions of using it for movies or music at the moment, but the Remote Desktop and Unified Remote seem to work just fine on it too.
If you've looked over any other threads, and 'uninstalled' anything, that helps on freeing up memory as a lot of Amazon's applications have the tendency to run almost constantly. As for CPU usage, in my opinion, I find it to be vastly underused for both models.
Hey guys,
I just got a fire tablet 10 hd and I realized that there's no way built-in to mirror my screen to my smart TV. With my Samsung phone there's a mirror setting right in the settings menu that allows me to mirror to my TV or my fire stick. I also have Air Server installed on my Xbox One which allows me to mirror my phone there, too.
The fire tablet 10 doesn't seem to have any way to mirror anything. I downloaded Air Server onto my fire tablet via the google play store and I was able to mirror the fire tablet to my fire stick, but after, like, 20 seconds, it says "air served closed" and it automatically disconnects the fire tablet from the fire stick.
My question is, is there a reliable app that I could install that could get my fire tablet 10 to mirror to Samsung Smart TV, Fire stick, and or Apple TV? I have access to the google play store.

Can you use the Chromecast and install Google Home from Google Play store
If you don't have a Chromecast. Android TV has a Chromecast built-in. You have it.
Or use TeamViewer.

Oi - please stop responding to old posts (in this instance nearly two years old) with incorrect, irrelevant or incomplete information. Google Home will not run well, if at all, on FireOS v5. Play Store is not natively available on Amazon devices; side loaded builds have proven increasingly unreliable although it remains a viable option. Best course of action is to unlock and install a custom ROM (which brings other problems) but there isn't enough info in the OP to determine if this is even possible.
