Anybody else experiencing poor wi-fi speeds on the Pixel 4 or 4XL?
I recently moved house and as it is smaller no longer needed my mesh network so just went with a nighthawk and in setting it up I have noticed that the link speed on my Pixel 4XL is really slow on the 5GHZ network. I have used a few different apps to measure the wi-fi strength as opposed to the internet speed, the best app I found is one called wifi sweet-spot and on my Samsung S10 I got 800-900 mbps standing a few feet in front of the router down to around 350-400 in the furthest upstairs bedroom, similar using the same app on my iPhone 11. On my Pixel though I am seeing 200 mbps standing in front of the router dropping to 40-50 mbps upstairs.
Anybody else seeing this? Wondering if I may have a faulty unit vs. the Pixel just having a bad wi-fi radio.
I don't have another device as new as the Pixel 4's... so I had to test with my previous phone, a Note 5. Obviously our houses and routers are different as well... so this can only be taken as relative comparisons between our pairs of devices.
When close, I got 335 and 324 for the Pixel and Note.
When a couple rooms away, I got 341 and 260.
When a floor and a couple rooms away, I got 243 and 209.
When two floors away, I got 159 and 160.
The Pixel 4 XL always reported a slightly better dBm by 1-5 points where the spread lessened with distance.
I think the thing to really understand is that speeds are not linear to distance. They change in steps. When the router/device decide that a negotiated speed is too poor in quality, they will step down the negotiated speed by a very noticeable amount. For my devices, distance 1, 3 and 4... they negotiated the same speed with the router. Distance #2, obviously the Pixel 4 XL stayed at a higher negotiated speed.
Secondly, I don't think you can use something like a laptop to add to the results. This app does something really weird to do its measurements. My best guess is that it sends out UDP packets as fast as it can and receives nothing back. Also, the speed that it reports in the app does not match what the device and the router think is being sent. For example, the device and router both agree that less than 200Mbps of data is being moved around. So the app is doing something weird with the numbers and you can only compare the app to itself.
I am lucky to have recent phones to test. Strange thing is with the pixel is it starts higher (500-600 Kbps) but then quickly drops after a few seconds.
The router is a Netgear ax8 and the screenshots for my devices are below. The zones (spots) are not all exactly like for like but spot one is always 2-3 feet in front of the router and the last one always bedroom 3 furthest from the router. Nighthawk 5g is the S10 and the others are named accordingly.

in the austin, tx area i normally have been getting around 700-800 from home and 400-500 from work using xtremelabs.
out of nowhere starting yesterday i started hitting around 1.6-1.7 from home and around 1.5-1.8 from work.
anyone else noticing a difference?

Well I know T-Mobile is rolling out full HSPDA in some area's. So might be why you are getting a boost in speeds. With 2 bars of 3g signal im getting 761 down 709 up. And I am in the 1B floor of a big building.
ok something isnt right here.....downloaded the speedtest.net app.
this is after a reboot:
Test Date: Jun 4, 2010 8:51:10 am

i'm not gonna argue it. even if these speedtests are totally off i definately am noticing a difference
It's just a good HSDPA speed. If you weren't seeing it before - it means you have never been near HSDPA-capable base station.
I'm from Austin too...and just like you I was only getting 6-700 down and 2-300up. Now 2.19mb down and 1.3-1.4mb up. That's with only 2 bars here at work now. I'l go out side later and test. I get full bars out side and at home.
Your speeds are what I see everyday here on ATT in socal, so your area prob just got upgraded. But your ping certainly is impressive.
Yes, faster in Houston
Yesterday I noticed my speed was very fast here in Houston on T-Mobile 3G. I didn't think much more about it until about an hour ago and realized it was really fast. I did a speedtest and was pleasantly surprised. I'm getting great download speeds! I knew they were rolling out 4g in the Austin area but I wasn't expecting it here in Houston.
I used to range from 400 - 800 (using the latest froyo radio on 2.2). Today, I'm getting 1141 - 3500! I'm so happy.
I've tried the Charge and Thunderbolt along with the Revo, and for some reason the 4g on the Revo is less that half the speed of the other devices using the Speedtest app. Someone on another forum commented about this as well. Do you folks think this is a radio issue that can be fixed? Otherwise, I'll be taking the Revo back.
Thanks!
What is your dl speed because in all honesty any dl above 3 MB/sec is overkill. Here in SE TX mine avgs. 8 down/5 up. Try another server it does vary greatly. Remember it is a burst speed and is dependant on how many users are on a tower plus other factors beyond your control. A true OC-3 speed of 20 down /20 up runs about $20,000 a month for a business.
I'm always between 8 - 11 down and 4 - 6 up out here in Charleston, SC

Average 4G speed around my home is 8-12 dwn, 5-9 up.

Verizon probably has run their own fiber to their towers... and they are probably running OC-12 or 24 lines.
Hehehe... had to block the isp, as we are our own... That is shared with 1500 other users...

4G LTE in Milwaukee is VERY fast.
Near the airport, strong constant 20-30mbps and 4-9mbps up.
I have yet to venture to Madison yet or Wisconsin Dells, as those are the other two major city's in WI to have LTE setup.
on a side note, I will say with my first LG which was borked and stuck with the stock shipping software my downloads were some what slower then my new one with the current stock software. 15mbps max on the old software and 30mbps with the new software.
Anyone see this yet:

I see a few members there: GS4 active, Galaxy Mega - but not us... yet.
Hopefully it's just a matter of resubmitting for the higher certification and not a physical (hardware) limitation.
Edit:
I know ac is basically a "shiny object" but ZDNet has a good rundown on what it means:

From another guy on xda:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=39564915&postcount=15
To be honest 802.11ac in the first wave is going to be kind of pointless. In reality it is basically just 802.11n with wider channels. 802.11b ---> 802.11g are big changes. 802.11g ---> 802.11n are big changes. 802.11n ---> 802.11ac, not so much.
It doesn't say buy I am guessing it is going to be a 1x1:1 like the SIII. I would rather have a 2x2:2 802.11n that a 1x1 802.11ac
Here is how it works out.
SIII - 802.11n 1x1:1 at 40mhz = 150mbps
Nexus 10 - 802.11n 2x2:2 at 40mhz = 300mbps
S4 - 802.11n 1x1:1 at 80mhz=325mbps
the Nexus 10 has two antennas and radios compared to the SIII or S4. It should be able to hear and transmit better.
WiFi has a **** load of overhead so you normally get about half of your connection rate in real throughput. With that said I only get about 90mbps with iPerf when my Nexus 10 is connected at 300mbps. It is like the bus on the thing can't hang. Copying files from a server with ES file explorer is super slow.
I haven't played with an s4 but the bottleneck on the other devices isn't the wifi.

His numbers seem to pan out with what another guy claims on AndroidCentral:
http://forums.androidcentral.com/ve...5-ghz-802-11ac-wifi-settings.html#post2815095
Thank you so much, that was the issue, I had the same name for both SSID's!
WOW is all I can say! I am now getting downloads on wifi of close to a 100 mps on 5 GHZ and only 45 to 50 on 2.4. Now I just have to reconfigure the router so I can print off of the 5 GHZ line, but that will be later.

My S4 works like a champ with my Netgear R6300. The range and speed of 5ghz 802.11ac is outstanding.

"That's great, but it's not gigabit great."
First off I'm in the GTA of Southern Ontario. I've used/tested tons of phones from the Captivate up to the Note4 on different carriers from London to Ottawa.
I've done posts before too but like to see the change over time and I have to admit the major carriers here have expanded quite well over the past few years and the performance has been incredible.
As well, it is true that the phone itself and it's hardware really affects what kind of DL speeds you will get.
I'm mostly on Rogers in the Toronto area and have got some amazing speeds (on certain towers). There really is a massive difference from area to area and tower to tower.
I could give you the top ten towers that easily get over 100+ mbps and probably would do 250+ once the carriers activate the latest cat6 LTE.
******
So post some of your experiences and screenshots of speed tests. What carrier and general area if wanted. I use apps that tell me the exact tower I'm connected to. Your signal level too if wanted.
All of my crazy high tests are (obviously full signal bar connection) but I check actual number level and try to be between - 60 and - 77 dBm. Keep in mind most phones hit 4 bars at - 85 (lower the better.. - 50 being perfect) although the Note 4 uses a slightly different scale.
Here are a few tests I did recently on a couple (really good) towers around me.

FYI.. I find the Ookla Speedtest.net app is the best but keep in mind that top performance changes from server to server and time of day.. As well, be aware that when blazing over 100+ mbps you will use up 115+ mB's per test!
Here are the better more consistent servers I use for top tests.
For Toronto - Start and Nexicom seem to be best.
Montreal has several good ones but Fibrenoire is typically amazing.
Speedtest.net in Washington used to be poor.. Strange as it's their testing app and would figure it would be tops but now is much better. I can get 100+ often.
Georgian college in Barrie is usually good as is TowerStream in New York.
Bell/North Bay, Lightspeed/Canton, TimeWarner/Syracuse and University of Flint all can go 100+ too but are sometimes much lower at points during the day.

Could someone please explain to me what is going on. Last year when my network was only offering 3g I was getting 15 to 28mbps in the same area. This year I have 4g and I receive maximum of 4 to 12mbps. Thank you
Sent from my Nexus 6 using Tapatalk
when your network is busy, your speed gets slowed down. usually its slower in the day, and faster at night. anyways, it has nothing to so with your n6. it all has to do with your network. I get 60mbps near home, and 5mbps near work.
Giffgaff speeds are identical if not slower in my area.

If you take a look at the screenshot it shows you as being on HSPA, which is 3G. So there is definitely a network issue in your location. You would know if you were on LTE, as the network indicator on the phone would read "LTE" instead of "H" or "H+", and LTE speeds would be around 50 down and 10 up.

I don't know who your network provider is but I haven't seen LTE speeds of 50 down since the launch day of the HTC Thunderbolt on Verizon. Network quality has severely degraded since then...
I didn't save the test results from when I got the 50/10 result, and I should have. Below is what I just got from a test. Are those numbers typical?

typical is what you would normally see. and typical doesn't exist, since we all see different data speeds throughout the day. again, it all depends how busy your network/tower is at the time. again, I see speeds up to 60mbps download, 30mbps upload. and also, I see speeds of 5mbps download, 5mbps upload. that's a big range isn't it? but its like that every day, depending where I am and what part of the day it is. that's typical.
---------- Post added at 01:44 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:41 PM ----------
I had a terrible ping on that test, which is why I only got 30 down and 10 up. However, even a better ping doesn't always help. Running a couple of tests on different servers just now resulted in lower speeds than 30/10, which means more people using the network. The question of typical comes up not only because the poster prior to you doubted that I received 50/10, but because I never had a device with working LTE until the Nexus 6 and didn't know what to expect.
