For some really dumb work related reasons (vmware hub bs) i am currently trying to downgrade my ATT note 9 to 8.1
It was NIB December when i opened it it wasn't receiving OTA updates. So i used firmware.science to push up to N960USQU1CSA6 hoping it would catch OTA updates from there(i was wrong)
needless to say ive tried flashing about 6 different boot loader v1 firmware for U ATT stock or U1 . on 3 separate pc's with 2 different versions of Samsung drivers, and 2 different versions of ODIN( both patched). ( ive been trying for literal HOURS)
yes i tried a few different cables also, including the brand new cable that came with the phone that i left in the box today.
yes the phone is in download mode.
Odin will either get stuck on initializing , or setting up connection. or it'll just spit out a failure error very quickly.
does anyone have any idea were i might be going wrong?

Once upgraded to 9 pie or 10 q you cannot downgrade its impossible.
Oreo is on bootloader 1 and pie is on bootloader 2 & 3.
No matter which odin or pc you will use it's useless it will fail in odin.
Samsung snapdragon models has locked bootloader and will block you from downgrading.
By the way android 10 is awesome OS you should keep your device updated for security reasons in my opinion.

i was under the assumption bootloader version of firmware was represented in the 5th digit from the right on build numbers.
as dumb as it sounds i wanted to downgrade to install my companies enterprise BYOD software.
when installed on android 8 it works slightly differnt (doesnt used samsung work profile) then as you upgrade the policy enforcement doesn't require you utilize the work profile. without going into details, it makes USING the software 9001% more user friendly.
so it ultimately boils down to be screwed with the locked bootloader?

Hello,
in my company we are developing an android app. The lowest android version this app supports is android 4.3.
The company bought several testing devices including a AT&T branded Samsung Galaxy S4 Active. With Android 4.2.2 (Buid Number: JDQ39.I9295UCUAMF3)
I tried it for a while now, but I can't get the OTA Update to work. It says "Software update interrupted. Try again in 24 hours".
I can bypass the 24h lock by changing the date of the phone. But even after ~30 tries the phone is not updating.
There is no SIM Card in the phone. Is a AT&T SIM Card needed to update the device? I am not able to get one, because I am located in Germany.
Can I update the phone manually with Kies or something?
I don't have admin right on my machine so I need to know what to do, before I contact the admin to install a required software.
Could a blocked port be an issue? I do have access to the internet, but if Samsung (or AT&T) uses some non standard port, my company could be blocking it.
(Root is not an option.)
Kind regards
Cliff

Hi Cliff. I can't say for sure, but my guess is you can't access the OTA because you're not in the right region (someone correct me if I'm wrong). As far as I know, you shouldn't need a SIM to update, again could be wrong. More importantly, there are other ways to update. You could probably try Kies, but I wouldn't recommend it, it seems like users always have issues with Kies. I would strongly recommend you try updating the phone with Odin, a tool by Samsung that let's you change around your phone's firmware (among other things) when the phone is in download mode.
There is an exhaustive guide linked to here that thoroughly explains how to go from any version of android (official, for this phone) to any other version. In simpler terms, that link shows you how to manually update, which is what I think you're looking for. Also the files you'll need to download are located here. Hope I've helped, and good luck updating! :good:
Oh, just re-read your caveats: you almost certainly don't need a SIM for Odin to work, and you definitely don't need root either.

Thank you for your answer. Yes, maybe AT&T does region lock the update -.-
I've used Odin on my old Galaxy S2 some years ago.
I'll have a look into it and decide if this is the way to go.
Odin will do it as long as there are full install files for you to use.

You need an AT&T SIM card in the phone in order to install AT&T OTA updates. You can't use Kies to update because AT&T won't let Samsung post AT&T firmware on Kies. So your only option is to use Odin and the guide posted above.

Note 8 is unlocked and currently with T-MOBILE, previously AT&T. I've search all day today and still can't find why I don't have the Oreo update yet. I have the Samsung keis software and it tells me I'm up to date. Did it ever come out for my baseband? I apologized in advance if this was already talked about, I only saw discussions about it being rooted. I want to keep it stock. Thanks

You can check for latest firmware related to your specific model on sammobile.com, then download through updato.com (or using the SamFirm tool) and flash it through Odin.

Since you're using it with T-Mobile and it was previously AT&T you're not going to get updates anymore unless you use an AT&T sim card.. The only way to get the updates at this point is to download the update firmware yourself and flash it through odin. The reason being is because T-Mobile doesn't carry AT&Ts firmware updates so you have to get it yourself.. It's easy as hell to find the firmware on places like Android File Host. Also do not download T-Mobile firmware it will not flash... Use AT&Ts firmware only.
I have a AT&T iPhone 7 from work, you guys think if I take that SIM and put it into the Note 8 the updates would come through? I was looking through the Sam mobile thing. You guys make it seem easy to manually update and I'm terrified being my first time doing it that way. But if you think the SIM card swap would work I'll give that a try first.

The sim card swap should work.. Can't hurt, try it and then check for updates.
It worked!!!
I swapped out the sim cards and it worked!
I ended up having to back up the device and restore, since the update wasn't showing up. I cleared the cache, checked and nothing. After restoring the phone the update became available. After the 8.0.0. update there was about 4 updates after (security patches). I'm now on 8.0.0 with Aug 2018 security patch. I put my tmobile sim card back in and restarted the phone. I even get the tmobile screen during boot up which I never gotten since I switched back in February. All in all it's working fine. I'll update if anything crops up. Thank you all for your help!
You can push software update with this procedure.
put this in your phone app: *#8736364#
Then go to Field Test mode.
Change "Device Initiated date" to one or a few minute ahead. wait until you see "SET" then press Home.
Wait until you see software update to kick it.
Try several times if it doesn't work at first.

as stated before, just flash another n960f firmware manually.
so try OXM
single sim and dual sim have the same firmware in case you were wondering.

Thank you and I know I'm asking very basic questions here, it's just so simple with a Pixel and I really don't want to brick the Note.
What you are saying is that it doesn't matter the region I pick, the Note 9 will continue to work as an "international" phone where my two Canadian providers and Google Pay will continue to work? I have XSP right now as region so if my phone is set to Singapore and I can use Google pay in Canada, one doesn't prevent the other from working.
I can also see that versions ending in "ARJ1" are available from samfirm and the "J" would mean it includes October patches if I understand everything right.

familiarize your self with what is a snapdragon and an exynos and the different phone models pertaining to each then bricking won't be an issue. anyways ODIN usualy wont let you flash something that is not compatible.
yes J is October and for google pay, usually its supported pretty much wide spread. samsung pay is an other story and is the more coveted of the 2 'pays'. but since you're after Google pay, it should still be working.
just remember that you cant downgrade bootloaders so be sure of your intentions because you cant revert back to a lesser revision.

Thank you, that's a very good point. I know Samsung can be slow to update to begin with so I was looking for ways to be at least not in a situation where my phone is the last to get the slow updates. To have an expensive flagship phone that still can't apply the September updates is disappointing. I have manually flashed my pixel often because the "check for update" would not give me an update so that's not usually a problem for me. I also liked how the pixel has very few customization options compared to the Note 9, that's fewer options to reconfigure after a fresh flash!

I applied the update from today (in the stock firmware thread) and I was a bit concerned as this was a first flash but everything went well. I have to say as nice as it is to like a phone "stock" like the pixel, having customization option is good. Also it will discourage me from doing full wipes all the time because it takes more time to reconfigure!
Thank you for your help today, I really had a hard time figuring out which country/region I should flash.

I have Note 9 in UK on 3 network
I note from SAMMOBILE a newer version of the firmware I have installed is available
My device is not picking it up when checking for software update
Can I manually install the newer firmware ? if so, how and will I lose any device data /settings as a result ?
Thank you
Cheers
Mark
I would advise that you wait for the OTA update to be release for your device and install that. As installing the unlock stock Samsung OS could have adverse effects on your Branded device.
I purchased the NOTE 9 carrier unlocked. I have put a 3 (UK) SIM. in it.....(I have a SIM ONLY deal from 3).......it it safe to proceed with firmware update and if so how ?

Yes, it is safe. Just go into the Settings Menu and you should find a option there to update the OS of your device.
Does not find any update using settings / software update.....I see a newer version on the sammobile web site.......how, if it is safe to do so, do i install the newer version from the sammobile web site ?

Download firmware to PC
Use Winrar for example to unzip the firmware to its component files.
Download latest version of Odin (13.3.1
I think)
Put your phone in download mode connect to pc with usb cable (make sure you have Samsung USB drivers on your PC first)
Run Odin
Load files you unzipped BL, AP etc into Odin
When you get to CSC choose home CSC to retain your apps and data
Press start on Odin and wait five to ten minutes approximately.
Note 9 should reboot to new version when installation is completed (Odin will show passed)

thats software. Samsung apparently got fed up with the complaints stemming from having devices going out into the general public that are completely incompatible with service providers other than the ones they were originally intended for. Back in the S3 days the sprint one had the sim card embedded in the device behind the plastic cover of the internals. I have one of those S3's along with a VZW one that i un-hardbricked back in the days when a jig bringing the phone back to life after a "hardbrick" was mind blowing. Many hardbricks were caused by people trying to to make it able to be on other carriers since this time was also when the advent of MVNOs occurred. The history of the iterations of samsungs phones really spell it out. Many of us were surprised that it took them so long to do this. The S8 was the first Galaxy phone to have identical internals for all US models, the notes followed suit shortly thereafter
Greetings!
I will make this as short and simple as possible. Back in mid April, I purchased a refurbished Note 9 (SM-N960U) with Android 9.0 from Amazon.
The phone was locked to T-Mobile. I took the phone to my carrier, MetroPCS. Metro successfully unlocked the phone and switched my service to the Note 9.
I've been using this phone for about two and a half months now and I love it. It is the best phone I've ever had and I can see myself using it for the next several years.
Now, I will get to the problem: I cannot get the Android 10 update. I assume this is because of the carrier stuff that I mentioned above.
I've performed the update check once per week since I got the device and it keeps telling me that my software is up to date with the latest patch level being October 1, 2019.
I performed the update check in safe mode and still got nothing. I also tried the Smart Switch app for Windows and the Android 10 update still wasn't available.
So my goal here is to find a way to get the Android 10 update and also install a stock ROM/OS (whatever we are calling it) so I can avoid the carrier-specific bloatware.
I have my Samsung & Google stuff backed up so I don't mind formatting and starting fresh, just in case that is part of the process.
From my understanding, there is something called Odin that can flash a new ROM/OS to the Note 9 but my searching showed me many things to pick from and I don't know what to pick, how, etc.
I am scared that I will screw up the process on my own, with picking the right ROM/OS, Odin version, etc.
So I am asking for a little bit hand holding here. I need to know what Odin version, what ROM/OS for my device, and the various steps for the process.
Lastly, I am using Windows 7 64 bit, if that matters.
Thanks!
Edit: I used Odin once, a long time ago to root the Galaxy Tab 4, so I already have a basic understanding.
I just need to know what specific files and programs for the Note 9 and the steps involved and I can take it from there.
