Downgrading android 10 to pie - Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Questions & Answers

Hello forum.
I am on the latest BTU UK version
Of android 10, but I wish to
return to pie. Do I basically just flash
A pie stock ROM? I Want to
Use the light ROM or galaxy project ROM .... So is it straightforward?
Thank you
GARY

Check current bootloader version if it is higher than on old pie firmware than it is a no go otherwise just use Odin

You can flash Pie, version N960FXXS4CSK2

So...SK1 wouldn't work???

Bootloader version is 5th character when you count back from end of build number. It will be S4 or U4..the number is the bootloader you are on.

Did you manage to return back to Pie?
And do you mind me asking why you didnt get on with Android 10 UI2?
I'm on Pie UI1, and I'm concerned about updating and 'breaking' some of the current features that work on my Note9
Thanks

Android 10 takes a bit of getting used to (so does Android 11 DP1 on my Pixel 3XL) -
I downloaded Odin versions of pie SK1 and latest android 10 build, as well as the twrp for the different OS, have gone back and forwards between 10 and different roms on pie, and no problems, as long as you got backup, odin and a stock rom

I tried downgrading to pie Odin reads everything but doesn't flash. It says write failed after a long time. I am using Alienware laptop I'm not sure if there is something I'm supposed to do. Any ideas. Thanks

This is best your note 9 is on a newer bootloader. it is not possible to flash the old bootloader required for android pie

I was able to downgrade my Note 9 from android 10 to Pie pretty easily, but that was with the 1st release of android 10 for the Note 9. I think the newest version of android 10 has a different bootloader. So you would need to unlock the bootloader before you can downgrade to Pie.

that would be because youre on bootloader 4 and thus can downgrade to the latest pie version on bootloader 4

You can easily update the phone yourself using odin to flash the newest firmware version! You don't have to wait for your carrier to do it just go download the newest firmware for N950F and flash it and just do that every time a new one comes out.
Thx MrMike,
My mobile content will remain or i will lose all my apps...etc ?

If you're only updating you should be fine however I would still suggest you use Smart Switch from the play store and make a backup of everything on your phone so it saves the backup to your SD card so if anything goes wrong you still have everything and you just use Smart Switch to restore it all.. You never do anything to your phone without making a backup!

Note 9 stuck on Android 8.1.0

I just got the Galaxy Note 9 (SM-N960F/DS) and it's still on Android 8.1.0, security patch level December 1, 2018.
It won't update OTA, nor via Smart Switch.
The build number is M1AJQ.N960FXXS2ARL4, CSC is N960FOXM2ARK2
Is there a way to update it to at least Android 9.0?
Thanks in advance.

I do not know what you mean by genuine, it's original and unlocked.
How do I update it via ODIN if the firmware for this model hasn't been released yet?
Can I use any firmware to do it?

Man, the firmware for that phone with Pie has been release about a year ago..
Just because you didn´t get the OTA does not mean it hasn´t been released.
Just do a search here
https://www.sammobile.com/samsung/galaxy-note9/firmware/#SM-N960F
for your country code to get the latest
Also search the forum for the latest ODIN version, and you must know if your phone has a SnapDragon CPU or an Exynos CPU if you would like to install custom roms and/or TWRP recovery
Go for it..
OP your so lucky to be on oreo I'm jealous
Better to Stay on Oreo That Update it to Pie/10

Waw.. How lucky you are.
i think better you stay in Oreo that updated it to Android 9 (Pie) Or Android 10.
IMHO, true Power of Galaxy Note 9 is on Oreo. The Multitasking menu is far usable in Oreo than Pie. The Pro Video mode is basically available on Oreo. also, you can slide the Shutter button to Zoom-in/out. Thats only on Note 9's Oreo.
Believe me, you'll regret it once you've successfully update to Pie. CMIIW
Can safely say that Android 10 OneUI 2.1 is the best software for the Note9.

When I play Asphalt 9 it gets really hot but I'm not a gamer so that's a rare event for me xd That said that's the only game which really heats up my phone so much, others make it normally warmer.
Otherwise i haven't seen any issues at all the last 4 months since I bought the phone, Exynos version as well. I'm on OneUI 2.1 since 1 month ago. I never had the famous screen tint issue that others were reporting.
Mine was stuck on Oreo too. Always said that my device was up to date every time I would check... I downloaded android 10 from some where and used patched od to install it. Had to do a lot of updating of apps when it booted up but that's how it is.

With certain firmware you can't downgrade. Can run custom P with Q bootloader.

Any P custom rom. I'm on Ambasadii. There is also Ultimate.
Which variant are you using? N960F or N9600?
I know on the N9600, you can Odin atleast 3 versions back before the bootloader blocks it from going lower.

You need P kernel for P rom.
Q kernel for Q rom.
Q bootloader for Q rom.
Q bootloader is bootable for P rom, so it doesn't matter if you can't downgrade. You mentioned that the phone has twrp, so just flash a P rom if you don't want Q(but of course custom rom only, not official).
I upgraded my phone's booloader to android 10(baseband XXU4DSLA) before I flash SuperStable rom(android 10) but a bit buggy so restore back nandroid backup of Ambasadii(android 9). So my phone is now with andorid 10 bootloader but Pie rom

Are you able to provide me with a copy of your nandroid backup? I'm willing to try anything to get back on the pie bootloader and a pie ROM. I'm almost to the point now where I am wanting to sell this phone even though I do not want to sell it.

?You can flash a custom Pie rom eventhough your phone has android 10 bootloader. Just download a rom and flash it through twrp.
Just ignore the booloader.

It's not possible anymore
Only if you're not on Bootloader 5. The very latest version of Q.
If the fifth number from the last of the PDA is 4 and not 5 then you can use Odin to go back to the last version of Pie.
I tried the Q update a week ago after declining the update for months. I really didnt get on with it at all, nowhere near as quick or stable as Pie, so went back using Odin

Can I safely downgrade to Android 10 in S10 5G?

hello I'm planning on getting S10 5G with the global version (SM-G977B)
I want to get back to Android 10 using odin normally, but I'm not sure. Would that be safe or I will trigger some arb stuff??

It depends what binary the phone comes with. You can check what binary it has by doing this: link. If you haven't bought it yet but want to know if Android 10 is supported by it you would have to ask the seller what binary version it has. It looks like Android 10 on that model is supported up to binary version 6, so as long as the firmware it comes with is binary 6 or lower you should be good. See here for available Android 10 firmware for that device: link. Let me know if you have any questions.
So for example in that S20 Ultra 5G
G988BXXSGHWD4
It's not safe to go back to Android 10 (Binary C) because right now it has Android 13 (Binary G), but at the other cases if they are the same, it would be just fine to go back
Did I get that right?
btw I recently downgraded my SM-G981U1 from G981U1UEU4HWD1 to G981U1UES3FVK1 and it was just fine. I'm sorry but can you explain that for me because I'm pretty confused here.
Thank you for your help :")

Yes, it should be impossible: link, link, link (look at quote in first answer).

I really don't know, it should be impossible.
^Agree^
On a stock Samsung with a locked bootloader it should impossible to do that if the version is less than the current one. It's a built in safeguard to protect the kernel from being hacked as I understand it. Locked bootloaders use digital signatures to verify the Android code it's loading.
With Snapdragon N10+'s people have rolled back from 12 to 11 but not 10 or 9. Rollback from 10 to 9 isn't possible from everything I've seen. Not sure about 13. Maybe there's some wiggle room on some versions not indicated by it's binary?
With an unlocked bootloader this doesn't apply.
Meh, I simply leave the firmware be on Androids as this works well for my applications. As such Androids are exceptionally stable and loads are long lived.
