May I get OTA via usb ? - Moto X Q&A

Hi everyone. I have an xt1058 att en us, stock 4.4.2, locked BL. I'm not going to pay sunshine for this old phone. It's hard for me to pay that. I've noticed that Lollipop OTA isn't available any more. Is there any way to upgrade to LL, as I've said, with locked BL? Thanks a lot.

Up.

Hi. I tried with no luck. Worked phone dectection but upgrade option says I have latest version. The same notification I get with phone ota. What if I download manually the rom? Maybe there's something I can do... Thanks for your time.

When I boot into fastboot and select stock recovery it says "not command found" or something like that. There is no menu for recovery; so there is no update option.

Wow thanks! No I see "apply update from sdcard" option. Let me remember you I'm on stock everything xt1058 (locked BL, 4.4.2, att en us). Is it safe to apply your 5.1 rom that you've provided?
I'm very afraid about bricking my phone
EDIT: RSD lite 6.2.4 succesfully detected my phone. I don't know if there are risks on upgrading...
EDIT2: I see on your cloud storage that between 5.1 and my stock 4.4.2 exists three other versions. Should I upgrade stept by stept?

Ok. Last question. I know there is risk on every upgrade, but do you consider safe enough to do the upgrade? I mean, if the chance of brick is high, I would prefer to stay in kitkat.

Ok. That's a lot of help for these days. I'll tell you what I'm gonna do. I'll be on kitkat until it turns into complete obsolete (or change my phone). Some apps I use aren't available on KK any more. And I'll have this OTA RSD lite upgrade as a backup weapon to get my xt1058 extended life! Of course sunshine is still there, but I think it's a little late for it. Thanks a lot buddy.
EDIT: Hey wait. Why can I install stock 5.1 with locked BL and no other rom? May I try some debloated stock/custom rom? I found a stock xt1058 debloated version here

Yes sir. Update system button says "you are up to date". The Motorola Update app is upgraded.

OK. TBH your better off on KK. 5.1 heats the phone up like no tomorrow and battery life is atrocious. I rolled back to KK from 5.1.
Have you unlocked your bootloader?

No, I'm on stock 4.4.2 KK xt1058 att en us locked BL. I cannot unlock it unless paying sunshine. If I take RSDlite OTA 5.1 there's no way back to KK for me.

Ok I guess your stuck then but that is a blessing in disguise as 5.1 is dog muck.

The XT907 is surprisingly capable for its age.
Hoping that Verizon launches an LTE variant of the Moto G. It's a worthy successor to the RAZR M.

Unlocked it the first chance I got but for some reason the custom recovery won't work. However, if you guys got it working on your phones, mind if you can toss me the rope, so I can fix it.

Yep, we had suspected that 4.4.3 patched the exploits. We pretty much KNOW that 4.4.4 is completely immune to them. It was worth a shot though... :/
Thanks for the confirmation. Just for reference, which variant do you have?

You -could- attempt to downgrade, but realize that it is NOT ADVISED, and you CAN/WILL Likely brick your device, either now or in the future.
If I can't talk you out of it, whatever you do, DO NOT flash gpt.bin or motoboot.img from the 4.4.2 SBF.
If you downgrade anyways (ignoring our advice) and it works, realize that if you accept an OTA in the future, you will likely brick at that point.
If you are successful, you probably will be able to root using the new exploit, but DO NOT recommend other users to do it! (You don't want to be responsible for others' bricking their devices, right?)
[End Rant]
Good Luck.

Dude!!!! I wish I noticed this earlier, but if you have an XT1053, (and not XT1058), you can UNLOCK the BOOTLOADER, for FREE on Motorola's Website!!!
Unlocking the BL is far superior to -any- of these 'exploits'. It will allow you to have PERMANENT root, even on the latest (and future) updates.
https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/standalone/bootloader/unlock-your-device-a
Gosh, I hope you didn't actually try to downgrade.....if you did try, you should download the ENTIRE 4.4.3 SBF, flash back to 100% stock 4.4.3, and unlock your BL. Then flash TWRP custom recovery, and it will root your device for you. Its that easy.
Write protect will be disabled too! So you can write to /system, and root will be persistent. (You DON'T get that using any of the exploits)
Good Luck!!! :good:

bootloader (motoboot.img) might not have changed, but partition table (GPT.BIN) did. so the brick risk is there.
As @samwathegreat mentioned, since you have the XT1053, you can get your bootloader unlock code directly from Moto's web site and easily root after unlocking your bootloader, no matter what Moto ROM should be on your phone. (even 4.4.3 and 4.4.4, and future).
The only thing... If you have a real Dev Edition (says Developer Edition on the back, has a black face, woven white back) XT1053, unlocking the bootloader does not void your warranty. If you have any other XT1053 just requesting the code to unlock your bootloader DOES void the warranty.

Yeah, I was confused as well. "dev" could mean "developer", OR "device"?
Also confusing is that the XT1053 is NOT an AT&T device at all! (Although it CAN be used on AT&T - it's not an AT&T-branded device....which would be the XT1058).
?!?
Just use this guide.....first the unlocking your bootloader section. Then the root unlocked bootloader section.
Easy.

It is SIM-Unlocked already, yes. This means you can use it on T-Mobile, AT&T, or any other GSM carrier.
It is NOT bootloader unlocked until you follow the steps in the link @KJ Posted. It IS Bootloader-unlockABLE, but you must do the steps (request code & use fastboot to unlock) in order to get it "Boot-Loader unlockED".
See: "What Devices Can Unlock Their Bootloader" in the thread @KJ linked you to.

[ROM][STOCK][LP 5.1]XT1095 flashable stock rom

I have created a stock rom of 5.1 lollipop that you can flash via custom recovery. The only modifications that I have made are to remove the motrola OTA service, that way there will be no bricks from people taking an OTA and it won't bother anyone about OTA update messages. The recovery flasher was removed to prevent it from overwriting the custom recovery.
I have uploaded a new version which has the stagefright patch(23.16.6). The old version is also still available as well.
Installation:
1) If you are coming from another rom, or a different version of android you must do a factory reset.
2) Install the zip file through TWRP/CWM/etc.
3) Enjoy.
Download 5.1 23.16.6

Just wanted to say awesome! Thanks and am running right now with absolutely no issues!!! Noticed it's funny little differences in the ROM, from the Brazilian version ex. Status bar, the H was huge in the Brazilian version, very small for the T-Mobile unlocked xt1095!
So I'm running rooted stock 5.0, I can just flash this and run with it?
Yes. Just remember that my rom only flashes the kernel and the systrm. Nothing else gets upgraded. So your modem, partions, and bootloader will still be the 5.0 ones.

Depends on what version of android you have now if it can be rooted. If you have lollipop or marshmallow, then no, there is no root. Marshmallow is available via ota update.
