Nope, dont work

She was no where near the phone.. I'm so confused, I keep doing it over and over, it works for me.
She does have a tempered glass screen protector, but the first time it unlocked while wiping the screen before I installed it. I'm not crazy lol.
It also doesn't always work like in the video, that just happened to be the video that made it look the easiest. 2-3 fingers on the wipe, slide up and down on the screen.

You have a tempered glass installed?
Can't possibly just be this phone. Keep trying lol

Did you have a tempered glass installed?
If I had a good secondary camera, I'd take a longer more detailed video

Face unlock is mistaking you for her, turn Face unlock off and try again
Either that or you are managing to enter the PIN with the cloth

Neither, I ain't an amateur, my face doesn't unlock it, and I'm not "accidentally" entering a 6 digit pin that I don't even know

I think it may be the screen protector, similar issue that the S10 had.. I'm pretty sure I did it without it, but I'm not about to tear it off to see, it's the last one in the pack

[Q] Screen won't unlock during phone calls.

Anytime I make a phone call my phone locks. I know phones typically go black when it's at your ear, but when I pull away, it won't wake up/unlock. The only time it unlocks is at the end of the call. I set it up so that the power button will end my calls but that doesn't really fix my problem. If I have to use the dial pad during the call, I can't.
I read that the proximity sensor might be blocked by a phone case. I removed mine and it's still not working. Any idea what it can be?
Do you have a screen protector? If so, remove it and try again.
I am something similar happening, when I remove the phone from my ear after a call I cannot end the call because the phone is locked and I have to unlock it with a pattern before I can end the call or wait for the caller to hang up.
Interestingly I also have exactly the same issue as I had with the LG G3 as well, I take a photo and, if I do not have WiFi, the Nexus 6 turns off, it does it every single time - it's fine if I put it into airplane mode though. As this was the same thing that happened on my LG G3 and no one else is reporting this on Nexus 6, I am assuming it must be an app I am installing ?
Is that possible ?
Simon.
I have the same problem, it's really annoying. My phone won't wake when I take it away from my head and it doesn't respond to the power button until the other person hangs up.
Hopefully it'll be fixed with an update.

I am having the same problem. Brand new Nexus 6 that's only a few hours old.
I got rid of my screen protector and it works way better now. Worth a try if you are using one.

I just now am having this issue too. Here's another thread with same type of thing I posted in: http://androidforums.com/threads/black-screen-after-answer-call-on-nexus-4.671499/page-2
Long story short since I already related my post there, I haven't had this problem on lollipop 5.0.1, now after sideloading 5.1, I have this issue. Screen protector is on, but never was issue before. Now all the sudden it's an issue. I feel like it has to be a software issue. Guess i'll need to test few more times before taking off or cutting screen protector; will update with more news.
Same issue for me. Never had this issue before the update to 5.1. Wonder if I can go back. I have had the phone since early December.
A little testing. Holding the phone away from my face, the screen immediately blanks when a phone number is dialed. Tried rebooting - no help. May try a factory reset.
Very annoying!
Definitely is the screen protector screwing with the senors like everyone is saying and you guys are simply ignoring. I had the same issues off and on back on 5.0, 5.0.1 and on 5.1, but on 5.1 it was permanent. As soon as I took the protector off, everything worked as normal.
As a brief work around - you can go settings - accessibility - select power button ends call. Works for me till I decide what to do. I have a screen protector on and yep it's covering the prox sensors. Once removed it works as normal. Need to find a new protector that does not cover.
Rooted, stock, with screen protector.
Was working fine in 5.0.1 now in 5.1 I have two sensor issues
1) Ambient display does not work at all. When I pick up the device or when I receive a notification sitting on a table.
2) When I receive a call the phone goes completely black. The screen will not turn back on until the call ends.
I do not want to remove the screen protector until I know for sure that is what is causing this.

A2CKilla. Much thanks. I did read, but it was odd it went from 0% to 100% failure rate after the sw update. I work embedded sw and that is very uncommon for a sensor. I wanted to make sure since I just flashed this morning.
I cut down the protector and everything is good.

*****UPDATE*****
Well A2CKilla, we all just wanted to avoid the inevitable and hope it was a software issue we could just "fix" instead of being a $10, god forbid more, for a screen protector. Always try the more simpler things first than to destroy others first (which I accidentally did btw with my amazing tempered glass, now I must find one that doesn't block the sensor. In my professional opinion, if a sensor worked while having a protector over it on a previous android version, why in the actual F*** would it not work on the newer ones, UNLESS they increased/decreased sensitivity on the code somehow? Well that was my first line of thought anyway.
Also tl;dr PROBLEM WAS INDEED SOLVED BY TAKING OFF TEMPERED GLASS (that previously wasn't an issue at all) AND NOW ALL IS NORMAL.
ps. sensor is literally right next to the top speaker grill on the left side. Best to find a protector that doesn't block that.

I really wasn't trying to sound rude at all with what I said, but seriously, there's many a thread about this issue way before 5.1 even came out, and every single time the screen protector was brought up to be the issue, but everyone had to try to find 101 ways for it to not be that, granted my tempered glass protector was less than $5 and I've already found one with the proper cut out for again, less than $5 so I was fine with discarding it, but for so many people to really try and deny something that was the clearly the problem really was sad for a moment. Once again, not trying to sound rude at all but this wasn't the first rodeo about this issue

Wow I never had an issue on 5.0 or 5.0.1 with my tempered glass screen protector. After spending all day thinking it was a software bug and reverting back and trying multiple sources for stock images and ota for 5.1 I decided to remove the screen protector and it worked! Cant believe how 5.1 made the proximity sensor sooo sensitive.

This is not acceptable behavior for the device. Mine worked fine, 0 issues before update. Now ambient display is broken and in call the screen goes black. This should be a non issue. My other phone has the sensor covered with a glass protector and it's not a problem at all. This can be fixed, since it was working before. Taking off the protector is not an option for me since I don't have a replacement right now, and should only be a temporary fix at most.

so it's not acceptable for a device to not work properly with something it was never designed nor intended to have? and maybe you were a lucky one because there were many people having this issue and I also stated that it was an off and on issue for me until it was permanent after the 5.1 update. Also, that's another phone, not the nexus, every phone has different settings for their sensors. And technically speaking it is an option for you to take it off, are you forgetting that your screen is gorilla glass???, a type of glass they developed to be scratch resistant, outside of some dust here and there, I've notice no difference having taken mine off until the new one gets here

Screen goes black when you make a call on 5.1, try this.

I'm not a screen protector salesman, nor do I have stock in one. This worked for me, but your milage may vary.
I updated to 5.1 yesterday and since then, every single time I made a call my screen would go black and become unresponsive. When the person at the other end hung up, it would eventually come back. I figured it was the rom and/or kernel. I tried as many rom, kernels and combinations as I could and nothing. I eventually found a thread sharing that the sensor became more sensitive in the upgrade and even if you never had an issue in 5.0, your screen protector is probably the issue. I thought no way, I paid like $20, really liked the protection and it never caused an issue, it was a tempered glass protector and clear as day, but I was desperate.
The second I took it off and pressed enter on a call, no black screen. I could actually make a call, cover the sensor with my protector and the screen went black.
I know it sucks, i really didn't want to change my protector, but I could not use the phone the way it was.

which screen protector? if it's not properly cut or is an old plastic type protector that's probably the problem. The good properly cut tempered glass screen protectors don't seem to have this issue.
Same problem here, but worse.
When the screen went black during the call, the phone shut down, and has been misbehaving ever since, I've still not been able to unlock it fully. I suspect the Device Protection feature of 5.1 (anti-theft) to be the cause of the problem...

I used Skinomi Tech Tempered Glass ultra thin, it was rated well. It did cover the sensor, but like I said, never had an issue on 5.0 and and once I took it off, worked like a charm. You have a suggestion for a good tempered glass protector?

Dang man, that's way past my "take the screen protector off" fix. I'm thinking you have a more complex issue. Were you unlocked and rooted? Custom rom or kernel? The allow oem unlock checked in dev settings? Can you do a full wipe and step through the flash process in fastboot?
Completely stock. I found a workaround. Remove the SIM card before powering-up. This time I am first asked to draw my unlock pattern, as it is supposed to do. Then, let the phone boot to my homescreen and then only I replace the SIM card. I am asked for my PIN et voilà.
I think the new anti-theft feature is indeed at fault. It is somehow overridden by the PIN request. Oh well, at least my phone works now

Regarding the screen proximity sensor problem.
Do you think a deliberately smaller tempered glass screen protector would work?
http://www.amazon.com/Orzly®-Tempered-Protective-Protector-SmartPhone/dp/B00ORYY4IO
Where is the sensor located on the screen? Between the camera and top speaker?
I've been using a Zagg GSP with the same problems... So far removing it has been my only fix. Didn't have problems before 5.1 even with some haloing!
I think the proximity sensor is to the left of the top speaker. If you hold the phone just right in the light you can see two little dots under the glass.

You should call Zagg at 18007009244 . I just called and they said that it was the first reported case, and that if enough people called in, they would investigate. They also said that you can remove the existing screen protector, use some other one, and just get a warranty replacement if/when a new Zagg GSP comes out.
Xtremeguard fixed this issue in their spartan glass. They also fixed the "halo-ing" issue many protectors have. They made cutouts for the camera and sensors. I'll post pics once I get home. I encountered OPs glitch with the original spartan glass I had (1st gen?).

Hey man, as I suggested, try xtremeguard. Here are some pics and they have cutouts for the camera and sensors. They usually have sales; don't buy it regular price, its ridiculous! Here's a code I found that works if you purchase two items: Spring90
Or if you want just one, use 75off
I just use their glass protectors on all my devices and I've had good experiences with them. They now ship their glass in a hard plastic case; less chances of breaking. Pictures attached!
Is this issue really just limited to people with screen protectors? I have the Zagg HDX and am having this same problem. I really don't want to replace my screen protector and don't want to have to go back to a non 5.1 ROM. Unfortunately I do spend a lot of time making phone calls at work and need to dial extensions which I'm unable to do because of this.
Are there any kind of Kernel modifications or system settings that can be adjusted to fix the issue?

Yes it really is. I had the problem on my Nexus 4 with a protector so I made sure to buy a protector with cutouts on my Nexus 5. I thought they would have fixed it on the Nexus 6, although it is still very sensitive. I had the problem with a full glass protector and my screen would stay off during a call even after using the power button. So I emailed xtremeguard and fortunately they modified their guard to have cutouts for the sensors as you can see in the pics I posted on the last page.
Same behavior with Skinomi tempered glass protector. Took it off and the phone works fine.

There was some talk about an issue with the sensors and 5.1 causing the issue also, but it seemed it was a small minority that had this issue. As far as I know, you have to bite the bullet and peel off the protector. I tried 3 different kernels and 3 different roms and nothing at all worked. The good news is they have plenty of cheap alternatives that have the cut-outs. Good luck.

Skinomi is aware of the issue. I wasn't sure what was causing it until i found this thread. Removed my protector and problem was fixed. It looks like Skinomi is aware of the issue though, contacted them and got a replacement since i had removed my glass protector. The replacement glass no longer covers the sensor.
No need to remove your screen protector. Just head to Accessibility--> Turn on 'Power Button ends call' and Boom!
I too had the same problem just after upgrading to 5.1
Tried this and it works like a charm. No issues till now. I hear that 5.1 messed the sensitivity of the proximity sensors. But lucky enough for us, 5.1.1 has a patch to fix this issue. Till you get an update for 5.1.1 just keep enabled Power Button ends call, and you'll be just fine. No need to spoil your completely alright $20 screen protector
Thanks!
The only thing that worked for me !
Hi,
I empathize with you. I found myself buying a Nexus 5 in India in 2013 with a lot of excitement and the same happened after upgrading to lollipop and then marshmallow. I removed am imported tempered glass screen protector and that didn't work. Next, I downgraded to KitKat 4.4.4 and that didn't work. Google's product forum was a waste of time. Their rep said the same things: remove the screen protector, clear cache and finally do a factory data reset. I'm not from a technical background and after saying prayers which I said only in my childhood, the below is what finally what worked for me:
1) Downgraded to KitKat 4.4.4. I have a MacBook so used this YouTube link:
https://youtu.be/pzzDxrccZO8
2) Rooted my device using King root. Link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/one-click-root-tool-android-2-x-5-0-t3107461
2) Installed Xposed framework. Link:
http://repo.xposed.info/module/de.robv.android.xposed.installer
3) Disabled the proximity sensor from Xposed framework. This YouTube link helped:
https://youtu.be/hPRujBMeuz0
Hallelujah ! I can see my screen again when making calls. Like I said, I'm from a human resources background and literally prayed like Armageddon had just started before doing all the above. I can't guarantee if these will brick your phone or put it in some perpetual bootloop mode, so do it at your own risk ! Started believing strongly in God but disbelieving in Android after this whole bloody experience.
Cheers !:good:

Phone calls

Hi, has anybody else experienced that their screen goes blank and doesn't come back on when on a call and what makes it worst is I can't hang up my phone after I'm done with my call. Basically I'm at the mercy of the other person hanging up when the conversation is done, the only way that I have resolved this problem is when I restart my phone. What causes this problem?
Do you have a tempered glass screen protector on?
Look to the left of the top speaker and you will see two sensors (proximity and ambient light). Is there anything covering these, such as a screen protector, skin, or case?
I do have a screen protector on the phone. Should I just remove it? I just find it strange that once I restart the phone that everything works as it should.

When I bought my first smartphone, a Galazy S2, I bought an expensive (£10) screen protector. All it did was attract grease and fingerprints, so after a couple of months, after a sudden attack of common sense, I threw it away. The screen was suddenly always clean and smooth, and on every phone I've had since there has never been a single mark on any screen. Admittedly I do look after it - unlike colleagues who seem happy to literally throw their phones on to tables - and keep it always in an empty pocket with no coins or keys.
It seems very odd to me that we have incredibly tough glass on our phones (see the many people on Youtube trying to scratch their phones deliberately) and yet we feel the need to reduce their performance with pointless pieces of plastic...? Bizarre...

It sounds like your sensor maybe going. I have always kept a screen protector on my device and never had issues until I used a tempered glass one. The tempered glass was to thick to allow the proper amount of light in which kept the screen from coming on when a call came in or when on a call.
I would run a logcat and try to catch it happening. This will tell you just what is going on.

Because you are not sure if that is even the problem. The only time I had this issue was with a tempered glass one. This is a known common issue. I never had this issue with a normal one.

First off, I've never used a tempered glass screen protector. And I have multiple devices with the same sensors but, this is still the ONLY DEVICE that has this problem.

Have you bothered to pull a log at as I advised? This will tell you. Have you tested it without the screen protector as I also advised?
Just because it is the same sensor (which I doubt) doesn't mean it is programmed the same way.

Yes I have. And what I've noticed is that if I erase my call log history or restart my phone, everything goes back to normal.

Ok then next will be to run the logcat. This will tell you why it is failing.

I am running a logcat now and so far I have not experienced the same issue. I'll see what happens this weekend.
I had the same problem some weeks ago WITHOUT a screen protector but it never happened again. Could be the sensor which fails sometimes or a software related error. Are you using the stock phone application and stock kernel?

Yes, everything is stock, not rooted and, my bootloader is still factory locked.

If it's a Phone app bug the only thing you can do is deleting its cache and/or reflashing the factory image. If this doesn't solve it, I would say it's an hardware fault, but I'm still prone to think it's software related.

Glass screen protector that works WELL with the fingerprint sensor.

Hello, I recently bought a glass screen protector, it fits well and everything. It's one of the UV gel applicated ones. It stated in the description that it worked with the fingerprint sensor, but at least half the time it will say no match. Maybe even more than half the time. It's really bad. Before the protector was one I was amazed at how well the fingerprint sensor worked. I had an in display sensor on my last phone, OnePlus 7pro, and it almost no comparison as to how fast and accurate it was.
I already set the sensitivity to high for the touchscreen and I have also redone the fingerprint learning process a few times.
So now I feel torn. I don't want to live without a screen protector. I feel they really can save you from breaking your screen when you drop your phone as the protector will crack instead by absorbing the force instead.
So has anyone found one that works really well?

How? I've installed two of them and although looks fine, have to press SUPER hard to even get it to read...and even then it reads it like 25% of the time is all.
If I have face unlock turned on it gives the appearance that it's working fine, try it in a dark room so you know it's not using the face. Doesn't work worth crap....

HOW??? Seriously, there's all kinds of reports with people having FPS issues, how do some people not have issues? Did they change the glue or something? It's crap, ANFilm is better with the weight but not great. Even with sensitivity turned up............
WSD - Press REALLY hard and pray it open after 5-10 seconds
AnFilm - Press REALLY hard and pray it opens after 1-3 seconds
Non-Glass film - touch and it unlocks instantly.....

With the Whitestone screen protector I had to add the same finger to all of the available slots to ensure fairly reliable unlocking. It still sometimes fails if my fingertip is very dry.
GOTO screen protector from the Tmobile store works 90% of the time, but I bought it at an expensive price of $45. You have to wait for 2 days for the screen protector fingerprint sensor area to work properly.

Same over here, even when registering a new FP entry, I need to press hard, or no go.
Interestingly if I breathe over the finger (adding moisture) before touching the screen, it recognises like 95% of the time. Although I workaround, it's annoying to say the least, not to mention what someone thinks if they see you doing it.

One thing that may be worth mentioning is that when setting my fingerprints up my finger/thumb is turned to the same angle that it is when I unlock the phone. When you hold the phone and unlock it with your thumb it isn't straight up and down, it's turn to the side, when you scan your thumb it should be in the same position. Same thing goes for scanning your finger.
Do you really need a fingerprint sensor?
Time has proven 2 things to me about device passwords; the only real security is physical possession of the device, and you will at some point lose the password access due to a hardware failure (including data corruption).
Total lockout passwords are a bad plan unless you're dealing with national or sensitive company etc data.
All I use is double tap on... and never set a bios password on any of my PCs, ever.
Encryption for critical data drives is even worse.
Total access loss vs an imaginary false sense of security.
Think hard about that before you get locked out.
Don't get too clever for your own good...

That's the worst screen protector I have every seen in my life. Tmobile should be sued for selling it.
To add I have whitedome as well and I had to reregister a couple times but works well now

You don't, no, we just find it hard to believe because it's no where near that for the majority of us. Tape over the front camera to rule out face unlock and barely touch the screen. Does it unlock with your FPS or do you have to press HARD to get it to register? Don't see how it magically works for you when it doesn't for 99% of everyone else.

HUH? I doubt hardly anyone I know has ever had the not be able to get to their phone due to "hardware failure". And what "total loss?" That's why it backs up to the cloud (where you have 2FA) and why there's a backup passcode if it can't read your fingerprint. Plus a lot of us work for companies that require passcodes on the phone to sync corporate email......so FPS is faster than the darn code every time.
Why would you even risk losing your phone with no lock on it, the person could cause issues so quickly on that phone. I see no downside....my phone locks me out and I can't even enter the backup passcode, I can get a new phone and restore from the cloud. My phone gets lost with no code the user sees all my pics, access my google pay, posts as me on FB/Twitter, texts my wife, etc.
Please, don't try to tell people they shouldn't use phone security. SMH

I've tested it with the phone not facing me and it works fine, I don't have to press hard, just place my finger on the screen. A friend of mine has the Dome as well and has zero issues.

Question Fingerprint Sensor problems

I keep having issues with my fingerprint sensor... constant "fingerprint doesn't match" or "Press Harder" or "... cover the whole area..."
This is with a whitestone dome on the phone...
Anyone else having this issue?
I have a galaxy s21 ultra being used with a case by a company called you maker. It originally came with a plastic sticker that was protected and covered. That circular plastic sticker allows the finger to be read using the ultrasonic technology while being in a case. There's another technology that uses light to make almost a 2d image of your print. Try without the case and see if it works. Also sorry about you inconvenience.
well... there's no way i'm gonna take the whitestone dome off since its cured... just wondering if other peeps with WD tempered screens have the same issue with the fingerprint sensor
Had that issue with my S10+ as well. Try removing fingerprints then adding them again - assuming you didn't register after installing the screen protector. Another thing I had done was register the same fingerprint multiple times.

I have the WD screen protector on my S21 Ultra and I'm having issues with my fingerprint sensor also. I'm very disappointed because for the price, I expected it to be fully compatible with the fingerprint sensor.
The Samsung ultra comes with x2 screen protectors people rip the first one off or finger print sensor will not work i found this out the device has a second screen protector so no need to worry

Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but did you take off the factory installed screen protector that comes with the S21 Ultra? Not the one that you take off when you first remove it from the box (sort of a dust protector) but there is an actual screen protector there - very hard to see unless you look very close - if you did not remove that, then that is most likely your problem. If you did remove that before installing then I am not sure why you are having issues. Either way - best of luck my friend.

Only exynos variants come with screen protector, My U and U1 arrived without it. So just need to ensure finger print is re-registered. Did not use whitestone dome due to experiences with note 9 glass but the spigen glass is working well with finger prints once registered after application

Yes, I removed the original film that was on there. I also went to the "Display" menu and increased the touch sensitivity option. In addition to that, I registered the fingerprint of my thumb 3 times. I can't seem to unlock my phone in the 1st attempt. It usually takes multiple attempts for it unlock. From a visual point of view, the screen protector installed perfectly. I just wish it was fully compatible with the fingerprint sensor.

this is the exact same thing i'm experiencing!!! So annoying! I wrote to Whitestonedome and asked for a refund. Plus the bottom of the whitestonedome's glass is starting to peel ... even though it was cured and everything was fine for four straight days.
And no, the phone did not come with a pre-installed screen protector.
For what it's worth, the Fingerprint sensor works awesome for me. I have not added a glass screen protector and probably won't. For now, I am simply relying on the one installed by Samsung at the Factory - but I also have another Film Protector from AM-FILM that I will use if necessary. Very happy with how fast the FP sensor is - much better than on my previous phones....
Have both 21 ultra and whitestone dome glass installed. I have noticed that my finger slids a little not being use to glass as I tried for the life of me to use glass with my s10+. Couldn't get whitestone to work so I got zagg fusion glass. I have also noticed that if you have dry ass fingers, like after washing, it won't recognize your print. Try with lotion!
If only Samsung ditched the curved display for a flat panel, then we can buy "normal" screen protectors at fair prices.
The curve screen is a little annoying but also satisfying also
I have problems with original screen protector sometimes, registered finger only 1 time but I get same errors might just peel it off but don't know will it help any
I haven't removed the screen protector that comes with the phone from factory (not the one that you peel when you take it off the box... No issues with fingerprint sensor.. I had a note 20 ultra and I did the stupid mistake of removing the one from factory and putting one from amazon that had the circle for fingerprint.. I had to readd all prints and the worst thing is that it would miss more than hit. When I got my s21 ultra I was smart enough to keep the protective film that came with it. Other than that, I would suggest custom made with hydrogel (something I have seen where I live) which is flexile yet durable and works great with fingerprints.
I installed a generic £4 UV glass screen protector from ebay. Initially I had the exact same issue. But now it works for me. The trick I realised is to remove the old finger prints and re-register them. You will need to register the same finger 2 or 3 times and you will need to use a little more pressure when using the fingerprint scanner to unlock. It is still not as reliable as it would be without a screen protector and you will get a few misses but it gets the job done. I prefer using face unlock most of the time and use the fingerprint scanner only to make payments, access the banking app etc and for that it works fine I just need to press into the screen gently vs just placing my finger on the scanner as I would otherwise.
I don't understand how people claim that screen covers work perfectly well with with this phone's fingerprint sensors. i have tried AMfilm glass, and two soft ones by unique me and... even after the extra sensitivity was turned on, the fingers would fail most of the time. since you only get 5 tries before it locks.... so annoying... are the people that write those ratings all bs?? btw.. first experience with an ultrasonic sensor and it kinda blows..... am i out of luck? never had a phone without a screen cover ..... sigh

If you don't mind not having glass, a zagg will work for sure as I had it on my S10+. Currently running whitestone and if my fingers are just washed, it won't work. But if I rub them together or add lotion to my hands, it reads it with no problems. I have also added my print a few times in different variations like the side of my thumb and the tip of my thumb to make sure it can read any part of my thumb
