This morning I woke up and my phone was working fine. I had 2 updates in the market and I hit update all. After that my phone rebooted and it does the Verizon LTE animation and the LG splash screen but it goes into a black screen. While it's in the black screen the phone vibrates and the battery heats up. I tried going into recovery but it did nothing.
Pull the battery fo a few and wait before a reboot?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TGjBRAVZKW4&feature=youtube_gdata_player this is the issue that's happening.

so you said you went in to recovery and it did nothing? So you couldn't even get recovery to load? and are you stock or rooted with clockworkmod recovery?
I can't even get it into recovery. I hold the volume keys and power buttons and it just does the boot up then black screens.

Just hold down the volume down button, then hold down the power button also. Continue to hold both through the lg splash, then it should be into recovery.

I had the same thing happen to mine 20 days after I got it. I had to have it replaced under the warranty, which means they had to ship it next day air.
I've heard of a few other people with the same problem.
Finally able to get into recovery and wipe data but now phone starts up and its black screen with the status bar across the top. It's acting like it has no home launcher.
Unfortunately you are going to have to get a replacement from VZW. If you are within the 14 day period you can just swap it at the store. otherwise you have to go through the Warranty folks and make sure you have them ship it to you overnight.

Do you have Clockwork installed?
If so, this is an easy fix.
If not, well, it's a little tougher.
The gist of what's happening is easy to find by connecting your phone while it's booting to USB and running "adb logcat" on your desktop.
That will give you the boot logs and the exact reason for what's happening.
If you're running my decrapified ROM, you may want to switch back to the stock ROM. Go to my stock NANDROID thread, download that, put it in the right folder on your SD card, then boot into clockwork and follow the instructions in the stock nandroid thread.
Make sure you clear data also!
No need to call verizon
I tried connecting the phone to the pc and got nothing. computer couldn't even detect it. I called verizon and got the phone swapped under the warranty. First thing I'm doing when I get the phone is putting the recovery on it. Would have made this process much easier.

Yep, having ADB access is a surefire way to get your phone up and running again.
But, just for future reference, LG has a failsafe firmware updater that will always work, no matter what state the phone is in.
It's not super easy to set up, but it will fix a phone no matter how broken the software may be.
There's a thread in the Dev subforum with the files and instructions, but the gist is that it's accessed by holding VOLUP+POWER with usb plugged in, then plugging in the battery.
It's successfully recovered 3 phones so far.
It may not be the easiest way to get the phone back, but it has a 100% success rate
I'm having no luck with my new replacement I got from vzw. I've tried rooting it with S1C using both exploits, I've tried rootwiki's manual method and none of them work for me. Anyone got any tips?

Well... you could always try my "toggle ADB" trick.
Turn usb debugging on, then back off, then on again.
Then follow the rest of the rooting instructions, but skip the whole exploit section.
(Basically, remount /system as rw, push su, chmod su, and push superuser, and install busybox)
Ironically, the phone doesn't actually NEED any exploits at all-- it's pretty unlocked to begin with!
Hello, all! Needless to say, I have a problem. Here it goes: Today I factory reset my HTC Vivid, Unlocked Bootloader through HTCdev, perm rooted with the JBear All-In-One-Tool, installed CWM with the aforementioned tool, S-Off'd with the JBear tool and wire trick and unlocked my sim. Once all of this was done, I downloaded the app called "Freedom" (Free In-App purchases for AppStore (iOS 5, iOS 6 with JB, OS X) and Google Play), got the error "Freedom cannot be installed on this device," followed the advice to "Download localepicker and select russia or pyschh at the bottom of the app list!!and you are solved with all errors...." It worked and had Freedom working, but my phone was kind of laggy and I powered it down to restart it.
Here comes the problem: I try to power my phone on and nothing happens...nothing at ALL! I tried holding the vol down and power button...nothing. I have a back up battery and tried that with the same result. I removed the battery for about 10 minutes and came back to it, inserted the battery and tapped the power button and the backlight came on to a blank black screen and wont do anything else. I tried to plug it in to the computer via usb and flash the RUU I had on hand (just in case I wanted to quit failing at the wire trick lol) and I got a crazy sound. No the normal "successfully plugged in a usb device" sound, but a 3 tone (2 mid, 1 low) sound that reeked of rejection. I don't know what to do now obviously. I'm here! Any help would be loved and appreciated.
Thank you all in advance,
Mister Gilmore

This sounds like an S-Off issue? I had restarted my phone a couple of times since I Unlocked, rooted, s-off'd, which I did back to back, in that order. Is there any other info I can give that can help me help you guys help me?
This is the oddest problem I've heard off yet.... you might have to send it to HTC cause this sounds like a brick but I'll do some more research just to nd sure

Thank you, I appreciate anything you may or may not be able to find. I really want to avoid the HTC send seeing that it will cost me dearly. Warranty = Over.
Couple questions to out rule some conclusions
1: do you use set CPU or any over clocking app? If you did what were your configurations?
2: when you turn on the phone and the black screen appears can you hear any notification sounds or calls? ( try calling and texting yourself )
3: what ROM are you on? ( can't see from the xda mobile app )
4: how old is your vivid?
5: does the phone turn on using the original battery instead of your backup one?
6: does it charge?
Sent from my PACMAN HTC Raider on the Rogers Wireless Network
OK... I would find a way to charge a battery... I assume they are dead...
CWM does not support charging when the phone is off...
And this Freedom app sound like piracy... you may have gotten screwed up from the place you downloaded that from

1. No CPU or overclocking app.
2. There is no sound at all. I tried calling...no dice.
3. ICS 4.0.3
4. I've had it since November of last year (brand new) but I only used it until December. Then I didn't use it again until this December, so it's only been active only 2 months.
5. Both batteries power on to the backlit black screen, no vibration no sound, no wait. Even after i remove the battery, pressing the power button instantly turns it on. No 3-4 second wait like normal.
6. I can't tell if it's charging. No Orange/green light, but plugging it in turns on the screen (black/backlit).
Thank you so much.

Oh, no siiirr! I do not involve myself with piracy. I found Freedom after Google Play told me I had to repurchase certain items that got wiped out when I unlocked my bootloader. The statement on the page I got it from (I don't want to post the site seeing that I don't know if it would violate XDA policy) says:
"This software is not a Crack. No services or software were damaged. Freedom doesn't interfere in work of Google servers.
Remember: Freedom launcher was made only for legally installed applications. You can use this application to get content, already included in these apps. Please do not pirate Google Play apps."
As far as charging the battery, I had my back up charged fully and my regular batt was about 50%. My girlfriend has a vivid and the batteries work fine in her device.
Sorry to say but I think you are looking at a brick here dunno if its soft or hard though.....best to call up HTC as if you can't even get into bootloader then there isn't anything you can do

OK... try this...
Plug the phone in to the computer...
Wait for the screen backlight...
Hold power and volume down as to boot into boot loader...
I assume you have the HTC drivers installed...
Try to fastboot flash boot boot.img from the ROM you have... ICSS or whatever...
Yes... I know there is nothing on the screen... check the readout on your terminal window...
Hopefully it will flash...
If that works... download twrp from goo.im for the holiday and flash that... see if it comes to life

New information: As I was attempting what you mentioned, instead of the instant "2 mid, 1 low" sound from my computer when I plugged the phone in, it was delayed about 4 seconds. ALSO, WHen I attempted to run the latest RUU WITH the battery, I was told my battery was below 30%. Charge battery and try again. When I attempted the same thing with no battery at all I was told that the device could not be found. Is this a good thing that something remotely recognizes my device? Is there hope still?

Just buckled down and called HTC. I'm Still under Warranty. So I'm gonna send it in Monday. Thanks to you all anyway.
Same issue
I'm having the exact same issue with my Vivid too. My phone has been S-off and all that fun stuff for a long time so I know that has nothing to do with it. Order of my actions leading to it are as followed.
Using TWRP I did a factory reset/wipe then flashed from Paranoid Android 4.1.2 Rom to the PACMAN 4.3 Rom, I have used the Pacman rom briefly before so I don't think its the actual ROM that has anything to do with it.
Instantly upon boot my 32gb sd card became corrupt and unusable right after finishing installation. I reboot my phone to see if it was just a hiccup and would come back. That was it. Now I just get the lit black screen with nothing else. All 3 batteries have a full charge. I keep two fully charged then once the current is drained completely I do a swap to maximize battery life. Let it die 100% followed by an uninterrupted charge. I was really hoping to find an answer here. But to read the phrase "This is a new issue I've never heard of" scares me. I've tasted the android sweet life... I can't go back to a crappy flip phone now. :'( I'll keep looking around and if I catch on to something I'll keep you posted of my findings.
So I just tried plugging into my computer, and I got a driver installation window. (Yes my HTC drivers are installed) Its looking for drivers for a device named "QHSUSB_DLOAD" I have never seen that before, even without HTC drivers.
Qhsusb_dload is the universal sign for bricked... I don't know what causes it... But... The known fix is JTAG.... Very sorry for your loss

Hi all!
I bought the new Moto G (2014) a little while ago, and today, whilst browsing the internet, the phone stopped responding to anything. I pressed the power- and volume down buttons down for a little while, and I was greeted by the FastBoot menu. I just selected Normal Boot and it worked fine. However, 5 minutes later I had the same issue, so I did the same thing. This time it got stuck in a boot loop though.
Now the problem is, when I press 'Recovery' in the FastBoot menu, the android logo (laying on its back with the exclamation mark) doesn't show up. The regular Motorola Boot screen just turns up for a few seconds, and then the screens turns off.
I might go to the store tomorrow to get a replacement unit.
Any advice is appreciated!

Oh alright, excuse me. I can't boot my phone so I can't say for sure. It's the Dual Sim 8Gb model (XT1068 or XT1064 I believe, will check when I'm at home), simlock-free. I'm in the Netherlands (so it's not the US model), and I installed the latest update available (the one that makes Google Launcher the default launcher).
I'm at school right now, so I can't check anything else right now. I'll be home early though (about 13:30 GMT +1)

Not entirely sure. On the box it says 'Retail, EURO (Probably European), WHT 8GB.
have you tried:
for 4.4:
- with the droid on its back, press vol up + vol down at the same time for 5 seconds, then press power button briefly
for 5.0 & 5.1:
- with the droid on its back, long press power button, and while pressing, press volume up briefly
these worked for me.
When I was looking for it, the was no mentioning of two versions...
maybe it helps.

The thing is the droid on its back never appears.
@hannah: I missed your reply, but I'm absolutely positive. I can still turn the device on with the power button (it still doesn't boot though), and I've used the volume buttons a lot and they've always worked.
hi! I am just in your situation.
The droid on its back never appears.
My phone is 8gb Euro (Spain), updated to 5.0.2 via OTA
I can boot into system but lots of FC are happening and I cant use the phone. I cant get into Settings...
I need to make a factory reset but recovery is not accesible due to droid not showing and button combo not working.
Any clue? thanks!
so my other droid 4 died and i got some factory refurb droid 4 but the LTE baseband is missing and im stuck with only 3G.
i let the phone do some update when i initially turned it on but there was still no LTE so i flashed the latest stock firmware with RSD and still no luck
anyone have any ideas? i really want to avoid returning this phone because i've already had to return another one before this one because data connectivity would drop all the time and was unreliable as in it had 5 bars of LTE and only uploading 5KB/s

unfortunately the only device i have that still works is droid 3 and they use different sims so no
the other droid 4 wont go past the red M. sometimes it got past it but it wouldnt load anything afterwards and i cant rsd it because the battery is too low so its pretty much dead
i will say that i was a little bit rough removing the sim because i wasnt sure how to remove it it but i didnt scratch it or anything
the IMEI is listed as "unknown" and LTE radio wont turn on even if i press "turn on radio"
do you think it might be the sim?

Booting from AP fastboot to charging mode
If the Device will only boot to AP Fastboot and it says Battery Low
Connect the phone/Device ato a Wall Charger (not PC)
-In AP Fastboot Mode hold Volume down& power buttons at the same time for +10 seconds
- When screen goes black...release power button
-Then IMMEDIATELY press and hold Vol - and Vol+ to boot to Boot Menu.
- In Boot Menu scroll down with volume down to BP Tools, press volume up to select
- Device should boot to Charging Mode with battery icon
- Once battery is charged, try flashing in AP Fastboot again
This will only work if battery charging Firmware is still preset and not corrupted
If Motorola Device will not boot to Charging Mode, a Fastboot cable will be needed.

i selected normal powerup somehow it managed to boot up to the activation screen so ill let it charge there for a while then ill try one of the JB xmls
i should also note that ive used the same xml before (around 3-4 times) with the old droid 4 that died and never had any issues with the radio
okay so i flashed "4.1.2 - cdma_maserati_9.8.2O-72_VZW-18-2_1ff.xml.zip" and still no luck with getting LTE
i dont think its sim related either because the problem is there and ive taken out my sim before starting with the flashing. i suspect it was there before i even used it
after looking around on the droid 4 forum for it seems like all the other cases similar to mine went unanswered so this isnt really looking good
pretty disappointing to get 2 defective devices in a row
As I am visiting my parents, my mother hands me her phone and says turn it on. I did all the normal hold down the power and volume down buttons for 15 secs all the way to 3 minutes, hoping to be greeted with the bootloader screen. I never was.
I have had the phone plugged into various wall chargers, and the phone vibrates every 1 minute i would say. The vibrating was taunting me so i unplugged it, and it still vibrated every minute or so. So i decided to try and charge it form a laptop, vibrating continues. I figured well lets see what happens when i try to boot into the bootloader while plugged into pc. I was surprised to hear that a devices was connected. On PC i entered the fastboot devices command and it is listed as connected (T070600102C). Only device connected so I know it is the moto x. I tried the reboot, and reboot bootloader command hoping to see the screen turn on, it never did. At this point I am stuck.
She said the device was not drained when it happened and was about 60% battery.
It was recently updated to android 5.1.1 a few days ago. The bootloader was never unlocked, nor were any system files tampered with or rooting.
I left the phone stock for her, and got her the dev edition to be able to fix any problems that may arise, but I do not know where to go from here.
I was going to try and flash the factory image but motorola does not have the 5.1.1 system images available for download
EDIT- the vibrating occurs every 40 seconds when not in the bootloader.
I'm wondering if maybe the battery has become defective and iff replacing the battery would solve this issue?
Please any information you can provide will be greatly appreciated.
I should also mention i purchased this device from motorola, on july 22 2014, thus being out of warrenty
I also need to ask this because i can;t remember. This moto X was on 5.1.1 if I attempt to flash the latest image available form motorola (MOTO X, GSM Dev Edition:
L-5.1-LPA23.12-15 (Retail) LMR1) which is older, will there be any problems? I requested the download form moto so it will be awhile before I get it. Just concerned if there are any issues from fastboot recovering from 5.1.1 to 5.1.
I should also note that the phone seems to respond well to fastboot commands. I was able to get OEM unlock data code, and may try to install 5.1
wow nothing?
I would certainly try mfastbooting the latest image. But since it is stock, go ahead and try to see if Motorola will help you. Just because it's out if warranty doesn't mean that they won't help you.
