I am currently on PPWS29.183-29-1-9. I did have root (Magisk) and unlocked bootloader, but I did a factory reset and re-locked the bootloader. My device keeps *trying* to take the OTA to PPWS29.183-29-1-12, but it keeps failing with the notification "Software update unsuccessful - Your Moto Z3 Play couldn't update. No changes were made."
I'm getting a logcat from the OtaApp which says (among many other things):
03-02 17:05:25.842 12616 20764 D OtaApp : UpdaterEngineHelper:applyPayload, failed to apply payloadjava.lang.reflect.InvocationTargetException
03-02 17:05:25.844 12616 20764 D OtaApp : StreamingUpdatenCompleted: errorcode -1 Reason Caught an exception duringapply payload java.lang.reflect.InvocationTargetException
I also get this message on every boot: "Your device has loaded a different operating system.", which is different than the bootloader unlocked message about operating system can't be verified (I forget the exact wording).
Any ideas how I can get back on track to take this (and future) OTAs?
Bootloader is a bit of code that tells your device's operating system how to boot up. Re-locking a bootloader will ensure that the device will only boot to Motorola signed and provided Android Images.
To relock the bootloader, you must reflash a Motorola signed software image to your device, or send it in to a Motorola service center to get reflashed.

Use the LMSA (Lenovo Moto Smart Assistant).
A few people have had your same problem, myself included. LMSA should update it for you.

Seems I found a way to completely erase all data on my phone, with fastboot being the only thing I can get into. Every option in fastboot errors out. There are no partitions. Bootloader got locked somehow and I can't unlock it anymore. I have tried flashing 4.4 and 4.4.2 with RSDLite - errors. My IMEI and SKU are both zero'd out according to the barcodes fastboot menu. Only my serial# remains. It's a big ol' mess
Here's the bootloader https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BzDChv5WgeeDSTc2VFYzTTNXaWp4MkR4d0dKcXQzdkxRNlJn/view?usp=sharing
It says:
Code:
downgraded security version
update gpt_main version failed
Failed to hab check for gpt_backup: 0x35
CID Read Failure
Invalid CID status 0x69
CustomerID error. Contact Dealer: 0xdead
No SP partition found
Fastboot Reason: Invalid CID
I think this thread is the closest to my problem: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/moto-x-qa/fastboot-reasoninvalid-cidsolved-t2632386
Can anyone help?
edit:
Figured it out! It was a downgrade issue I think.
I got the official GSM DEV 4.4.4 file from motorola here: https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/standalone/bootloader/recovery-images (i had to request the download, took about 6 hrs to get "approved") and flashed that using their own flash.bat in the zip. I also had to use mfastboot.exe and rename it to fastboot.exe so the batch file would work.
So I guess once you upgrade, no more flashing official images that are a downgrade!

Correct. This has been posted about MANY TIMES.... Once you have upgraded to 4.4.2 or above... NEVER attempt to downgrade. If you downgrade you will immediately brick, or set yourself up to brick on the next OTA.
In fact, the only time it was "safe" to downgrade is when meeting the pre-reqs and following the SlapMyMoto process (i.e. 4.4.0 to 4.2.2 w/camera update).
Same problem but after Lollipop OTA update
I have the same problem with a botched install of the recent ghost lollipop OTA update on the Moto X 1056. The only difference is that the boot error message is missing the "No SP partition found" line. Any ideas where I can get the ghost stock ROM to try the fix presented here? I did manage to save the OTA Blur_Version.212.144.2.ghost_sprint.Sprint.en.US.z ip, but I don't know how to us that with fastboot.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
Hi all. I'm an idiot. I updated to the 5.0 rom, and tried to downgrade to 4.4.3. It went well, until my device tried to update to 4.4.4. Now I'm stuck with a bootloader (xt1053 30.B7) that says it's locked, says it can't be unlocked, and says
Code:
downgraded security version
update gpt_main version failed
Failed to hab check for gpt_backup:0x35
CID read failure
Invalid CID status 0x69
CustomerID error. Contact dealer: 0xdead
no SP partition found
Please, is there any way to bring my device back to life? I've tried flashing pretty much anything I can get my hands on, but it always fails because the bootloader is locked. I tried unlocking it with the code I got from motorola a while back, but that's not working either. Again, please help if possible.
I'm a jackass. I'm trying the RSD with the newest SBF now.
Hopefully the 4.4.4 will fix you up.

I am not very familiar with how Moto's phone's do their stuff. But, have you tried flashing the stock image for your device? One thing though, if you used the leaked soak test to upgrade your device, your screwed until the official lollipop image for your device comes up.

IF you updated to one of the 5.02 leaks (or soaks as they were called), and got this message when trying to downgrade by flashing an OLDER Moto SBF (like 4.4.4), then you will likely be stuck until a 5.02 SBF leaks.
GPT.BIN doesn't like being downgraded, or attempted to be downgraded.
However, if your bootloader still says 30.B7, I would try flashing the stock Moto Xt1053 4.4.4 SBF using mfastboot by following option 5 at -> http://mark.cdmaforums.com/MotoX-ReturnToStock.html
So the bootloader does say it's 30.b7, but it also says it's locked. And when I try to unlock it, it says fastboot oem unlock disabled. I have tried flashing back to 4.4.4, but I think the updated gpt from 5.0.2 is messing it up.
As a few of us have tried to warn people, and just like the mad rush to flash kit Kat when it came out.... You will likely need to wait for the SBF of 5.0.2 for your device. Not much else you can do at this point.
Sorry for your unfortunate situation.
I managed to get it running again by flashing the gpt of the lollipop files. I'm doing my best to go to the 1053 lollipop build to avert another brick. Thanks all for the help!
And I'm successfully on the XT1053 lollipop build. Let it be known that I'm only on lollipop to avoid incompatibilities due to the new GPT I had to flash. Sorry Motorola. Trust me, I wish I had waited.

I did the same thing with my moto x and now I dont know what to do with it, can you help me?
Does yours say exactly what mine does? If so, flash the gpt.bin from the 5.0.2 zip's root directory, and reflash 4.4.4 completely. Then update using the zip from the other thread.

Can you explain what you did after flashing 4.4.4 with the gpt.bin from 5.0.2. I'm about to do that but am not sure what update in another thread you are referencing.
thanks.
thank you bro, i was really desperate! this must be stickie!
A sticky on how to possibly brick your device with one false move?
on my moto x i was attempting to root it but it was very hard as the bootloader was locked because i have the at&t version of it. so i found a root that would not need the bootloader to be unlocked. and after the attempted root it would sit on the motorola screen for a very long time and then show up with the little android guy saying no command. so i pressed power and volume up and reset the phone and the same thing happend. i thought i had bricked the phone and looked that up, after that the same thing would happen but he android guy would appear for a split second and the screen would go black for 5-10 sec and it would come back for a split second, so now i cant get into the recovery page. after that i thought i had broke/deleted the os and i tried flashing the stock os (kitkat 4.4.4) to the device and during the flash when ever something was flashed to the system an error would pop up on the phone saying downgrade security version update gpt_main version failed preflash validation failed for gpt. the moto x's bootloader was never unlocked and was not verified to be rooted. all i can think is that some of the os is corrupt or deleted and i cant find a way to just wipe the phone and reinstall it without that error appearing. btw i am very! new to this so please give details for a person that dosent exactly know what there doing. (moto x at&t xt1058, possibly rooted but unusable) idk if this matters but at the top of the bootloader it says ap fastboot flash mode (5)

If I Can Just get It To Work I Will Never Try To Root Again. xD Unless I Have An Extra Phone.
Dosent Work Same Error - downgrade security version update gpt_main version failed preflash validation failed
Hay What If I Tried Unlocking The Bootloader? And Is That Even Possible Because Then Hopefully That Would Fix The Error Because It is When Ever I Am Writing To The System Or Really Any Partition Other Than Like The Boot Animation.

Bootloader unlocked. Phone rooted. P10 Vtr-L09. I no longer want root and have installed stock recovery but I'm having issues updating. Soon as the phone reboots after update to install package it gets to 5% and then update fails. I'm not sure if it's because the bootloader is unlocked or what but I could really use some help.
edit:
after factory reset, i attempt to update with ota that my phone received appears the update was successful.
Sounds like it's verification failed by Huawei's servers, which version of firmware are you on currently?

Just re-awoke my backup phone for my kid and am doing a ton of updates (it has a broken power button but I figured out how to work around it) by unlocking the bootloader and loading some power control software and enabling fastboot on plug in.
When trying to update to the latest firmware, it gets to about 15% and fails. It then gives the error:
"Sorry, there was a problem updating your moto x4. No changes were made."
Can I relock the firmware and get this working? If I do, will that break my new software or just prevent me from installing new software.
I would definitely warn against relocking bootloader - It will cause nothing but heartache and pain .. and please do not toggle off the "oem unlock" setting in developer options.
No - Once the bootloader is unlocked, OTA updates will be forever broken - even if you relock again. They only way to update stock firmware is to flash the full image manually.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x4/how-to/guide-how-to-flash-official-factory-t3808348
Basic steps are:
1. Download and extract latest firmware
2. Place flash-all file in folder
3. Update flash-all file removing the line that erases data (if you want to keep your data)
4. Run script
Alternatively, can install a custom ROM with OTA updates...
I have taken many updates with my other X4 One fi phone with a stock Pie ROM which happens to be bootloader-unlocked . You have something else in your ROM that is preventing it - it must be a stock ROM. Use Motorola Rescue and Smart Assistant to return your phone to stock.
Do not attempt to re-lock your phone's bootloader unless you want to throw it away.
