Downgrading from M to L

As the name of thread suggest I purchased a nexus 6 and it came with 6.0.1 I want to downgrade it to 5.1.1 do I need to unlock bootloader or what's the procedure?its my first nexus device so I need little help

Download a Lollipop factory image and follow the instructions in this thread, and yes you do need to unlock the bootloader.

Just out of curiosity, while everybody else is asking about how to upgrade their N6, you're wanting to downgrade. Why?

The device is backwards compatible. Why you'd want to downgrade is curious though. My favorite version is still Jellybean, then Marshmallow. I think Lollipop was horrible

Ok i am on mmb29s i thought this one is developer preview and not stable Can anyone tell me whether its stable or not or give a quick review about firmware and does the toggling of the oem unlock option locks the bootloader again?

The factory images from Google are always stable releases. The version you have is therefore a stable release.
Toggling OEM Unlock will not lock the bootloader. To lock the bootloader you need Fastboot.

Why would you want to toggle OEM unlock back to off?
Why would you want to downgrade to LP? MM is basically LP with the bugs worked out, and an extra hour or so of battery life.
If your only on the dev preview... why not upgrade to most recent instead of to an old version if your looking for more stability?

My advice is, don't downgrade. The latest android version is the one you are using, and it works without problems, and Marshmallow gives you a feeling of having an extra battery compared to Lollypop.

As others have already answered, totally stable, with better battery life probably because of Doze.

A few Questions from a Noobie

Hi, im new to Note 5 Dev. and been out of the loop since it was released. i had a Sony Xperia play and a Galaxy s3 before and know how to do the basic stuff to do custom roms and flash stuff etc. to those Phones. But a Note 5 is different, running on Lollipop, having EFS partition stuff and OEM unlock Stuff. i just want to ask a few questions to make sure i don't do something stupid (i already did some of the research for answers on some of this for a few days now and some are Informative and Awesome, but a little outdated) so tnx in advance kind People :fingers-crossed:
My Device: SM-N920C (UAE)
Android Ver: 5.1.1 (Lollipop) Stock
Questions:
1.) Can i Revert back to 5.1.1 (lollipop) stock/ [Downgrade] , IF i decided to update to Nougat Stock?? (just curious ) and if yes, can you kindly link me to a process? if not, then that's fine too :laugh:
2.) Do you have to Enable OEM unlock if Updating Stock (in my case Nougat)??
I red somewhere on Magisk thread here on XDA that it can Grant Root Access to 5.0+ . If so, installing TWRP and Flashing Magisk on 5.1.1 involves Enabling USB Debugging and OEM Unlock.
3.) Do i have to Enable OEM Unlock Forever now? cause i saw some threads says that if you disable it, you will have a bootloop or a soft brick and will have to Flash Stock again and repeat. (don't really have a problem with it being Enabled, but the other people in Tutorials , Vid. Tutorials and Thread Posts just mentions "Enable it". And never really says after the process is done u can Disable it and stuff.), just want to have that information, cause i Understand that OEM is a LOCK that Even if someone steals your phone and has a lock in it. they can't just Flash a Stock Rom on it to Unlock it. 4.) if i have a Custom Recovery and Rooted my phone ver. 5.1.1 successfully, can i still Unroot it and go back to Stock 5.1.1?? also applies to other Versions of android. EX. nougat Stock then i root it, will i still unroot it and go back to stock?
5.) Do you need to be in a Specific Version of android to use the Custom Roms?? i mean i'm in android 5.1.1 [if rooted], can i flash a Nougat Custom Rom or a s8 port etc.?? or do i need to be in Stock Nougat > Root it > then flash Custom Nougat Roms?

1)If you flash stock 7.0 on your device if available then its hard to revert to back to stock 5.1.1 as there is thread in Question&Answers section about downgrading from 6.0.1 to 5.1.1 but many are unsuccessful(I have successfully downgraded from 7.0 to 6.0.1 but Cant confirm about 5.1.1 as google has changed many security policies in updates versions like 6.0.1 or 7.0 which will block your bootloader to downgrade easily/Issue you will face like lossing of baseband or corrupt imei which will block you from receiving network signal)
2)Yes its very important to enable Oem unlock and usb debugging while flashing any stock firmware using odin to avoid DM-Verity/SW Check Fail/Custom Binary blocked by FRP like issues which are hard to solve enough OR you will might hard brick your device which will be difficult to make it live again( AFAIK to flash TWRP or Any root access using odin there is instruction to enable Oem Unlock before flashing always remember it as a essential step before flashing anything using odin)
3)Yes once you enable Oem unlock for purpose of modification of your device, it needs to be unlocked or even its enabled by default to overcome reported issue like infinite bootloop or Many i mentioned in my 2nd Post And Oem unlock allows your bootloader to be customised by flashing mods or roms which is by default locked so that you could not easily modify your device as well as to avoid further modification issues
4)If you choose to stay at 5.1.1 and rooted your device with installed TWRP then yes you can unroot it by flashing 5.1.1 using odin( In case your on 6.0.1 or Even on 7.0 you can unroot your device with the same process but here to remind you that you need to flash stock 6.0.1 or 7.0 respectively version on which you rooted your device So if you will try to unroot it by flashing 5.1.1 again while your on 7.0 rooted device then again here downgrade issue which will probably give you mentioned error as a result)
5)To use custom nougat based roms or any S8+ port based on 7.0 you should atleast upgrade your bootloader and modem to 6.0.1( If your rooted on 5.1.1 and try installing nougat roms then your device will not boot as your using old bootloader, so upgrade bootloader or modem either to 6.0.1 or you can update whole system to 7.0>root>install TWRP>flash custom nougat based roms or s8+ ports afterall choice is your as if you want to upgrade only BL and Modem to 6.0.1 or want to upgrade system with BL and Modem to 7.0, i will mention here is BL and Modem for 7.0 are also available to flash you can find those on dr.ketan rom n10 installation instruction section in Samsung galaxy note 5>Android development>Dr.ketan Rom N10 instead of whole system update but Flashing Stock full firmware is always recommended for good reception and avoid glitches)

~Ooh!! i have a follow up question regarding your Answer to the 4th question. Can i also flash other Countries Stock firmware?? for example: mine is Stock 5.1.1 [UAE] can i flash Stock 5.1.1 [USA] or other Country variants?? [of course unlocked bootloader] , i searched again here for people who did that and for some reason they encounter Errors and Unable to revert back to their Original Stock Firmwares.

i'm using revolution rom 8.10.25 pie and now arb become 1...

I would say so, but you're gonna need to format your data. So, in any case, make a backup, and then format..
I had been already on Xiaomi.eu Pie version, but since it was still a little bit buggy, decided to go back to Oreo Stable.
You have your bootloader unlocked, so as long as you keep it that way, ARB doesn't affect us..

That's NOT TRUE at all. ARB as Google intended would work that way, but Xiaomi implemented their own version of it. If you flash something with lower ARB index, you brick your device. More information here.

Yes, I had. First thing I did when I got my hands on my Mi 8, was to unlock the bootloader. Luckily for me, I had an account already, from the times of my old Samsung Galaxy S3, which had a lot of firmware available, and I used Miui at some stage and created an account back then, which allowed me to unlock the BL straight ahead.
So after unlocking the bootloader, flashed xiaomi.eu , and root with Magisk.
FLashed a few updates of xiaomi.eu and when it came out, xiaomi.eu stable rom, based on china version( all of this rom's are based on china version)
But, I had already tried global, but because it doesn't allow us to install 3rd party themes, decided to go back to xiaomi.eu and keep it that way.
A few weeks ago, Android Pie, came out, flashed a beta version, noticed it was still buggy, and didn't saw much advantage on using it, not to mention the fact that it was draining my battery faster, so went back to Oreo.
What I did?
Format data, by going into Wipe in TWRP, and then press Format Data.
After that, flashed Xiaomi.eu Stable version of Oreo, and everything works great.
So yeah, it's possible to downgrade from Pie to Oreo, as long as you have a Unlocked Bootloader and keep it that way.

i think i know why still can be downgraded to oreo.... i look in fastboot (oreo stable v9.6.7.0) file "flash_all.bat" the "set CURRENT_ANTI_VER=1"..
and in pie also arb still 1... so which mean still safe to downgrade to oreo coz arb still 1....

It makes sense since it's developer version and people go from weekly to stable back and forth. With new stable and official release of Pie on MI 8 they would increase ARB index and it would not be possible to rollback anymore.

How to update motorola moto x 2nd gen?

Hey Guys! I write to know that how can I update my moto x 2nd gen. from lollipop to marshmallow without opening its bootloader or root because I think these two options are not safe and somehow will damage my device. By the way its a verizon variant xt1096. So guys please help me, will be very grateful

Flashing Stock firmware from other variants with locked bootloader could become a nightmare very quickly, so I don't recommend doing that.
If you want a phone that is more or less secure, you better be staying on locked state on Lollipop.
Unlocked bootloader + partition encryption is a reasonable security measure for smartphones, but yet is vulnerable to injection of custom binaries due to the unlocked state.
On daily use, you will hardly ever be vulnerable, however you could be exploited if you become a specific target.
Other than that I recommend buying a new phone that supports security updates officially, for a least to the next 2-3 years.
You know your daily life and your priorities, you can decide for yourself.

Thanks for the advice! I really appreciate your thoughts. Well you said that I can update to marshmallow by flashing other variants firmware without opening my device's bootloader. So how can really do that? By the way I have already tried updating through recovery mode, but it didn't work. So is there any other way to update my device.

I have the Verizon model too, and same situation. Phone still works fine, but I couldn't tolerate being 4 major Android versions behind. Eventually, I bite the bullet, unlocked the boot loader (since device is well out of warranty anyway), flashed a Oreo-based Linage OS ROM, which really brought new life into the phone. Some minor issues here and there but nothing huge. You should be okay if you know what you're doing and backup your stock configuration properly.

In case you should consider unlocking your bootloader, I recommend flashing the LineageOS 14.1, Android 7.1.2.
Any AOSP ROM, based on CM13, Android 6.0.1, should support CDMA and GSM from the source.
In which case, the Lineage 14.1 supports it, and it has the latest security patches, as I said before, using /data encryption on a unlocked state, is a reasonable security measure you should consider, that way, anyone that may get hands on your device will be unable to read the data, being naive.

Thanks once again for your time! Actually I am not on CDMA, I'm using GSM network. So how can update to marshmallow now and I prefer stock marshmallow rather than custom or any other roms. So please guide me in that.

Question Odin won't flash anything other than latest CVDD firmware.

I installed Dr.Ketan's ROM (CVDD) and wanted to try Beyond (CVD2) but the stock CVD2 gets stuck on ODIN (super when AP only and idfw if i also select the Bootloader)
I flashed CVDD, magisk pathed CVDD and twrp with no issue. I also tried flashing and old Android 11 firmware, but it also gets stuck. Tried with many versions of Odin, patched or not.
I read that even downgrading to A11 is possible and doesn't need any special steps, you just flash old firmware. Why mine refuses to flash anything other than the latest?

The CVDD firmware for the Exynos Samsung Galaxy S21 series increments the underlying bootloader version to v5. As a result, you can't flash an older firmware with a lower bootloader version anymore.
Regarding downgrading to Android 11, the final Android 11 firmware (AUJ7 for most regions) featured bootloader version v3. The first stable Android 12 build (BUK8) also landed with the v3 bootloader, hence you could perform a downgrade. Nonetheless, a subsequent update (BULF) bumped the bootloader version to v4 and closed the downgrade path.

Oh I see. So its expected behavior then, that was my main concern. I think I know the answer, but you cant downgrade the bootloader version in anyway right?
