I just bought a 3m old S10 and unfortunately the auto max brightness is a bit lower in direct sunlight than my 1y old S8, while according to reviews it should be significantly higher.
I can still read the screen outdoors in the sun, but with sunglasses on it is a bit more difficult than my S8. It certainly does not look as "eye melting" bright as some reviews mentioned.
Both have everything set up correctly to allow for auto max brightness outdoors (Adaptive brigtness on, Vivid mode).
Now I am wondering if this an isolated issue with my device.
Has anyone else noticed this in comparison with a S8 or S9?

You don't want to give your significant other yet another reason to yell at you while you're reading XDA in bed. Rate this thread to express what you think of the LG Nexus 5X's display minimum dimness. A higher rating indicates that the display can get extremely dim, ideal for reading in very dark environments.

Not great. LCD has trouble with very low brightness
I've never seen an IPS display brightness get as low as this. Phone arena measured it at 2 nits.
Not many people need their screen to get that low but for those who do, it's there.
Screen can get really dim on manual setting
For me, the lowest brightness setting was never needed, but if there are users that want to take advantage of this then it is there.
Anyone have issues with the adaptive brightness feature lowering the screen brightness way too low? In a room where the light source is in front of me (behind the phone since it's pointing at me) the phone screen will dim and make it impossible to read. Increasing the brightness doesn't help as it will get way too bright when something bright comes on behind me for a few seconds.
Omg I LOVE how low the brightness gets, its perfect for waking up at 3 am and checking the time. I'm one of those people who keeps the screen on the lowest brightness possible, never use auto brightness. I've never seen a screen have as huge of a range of brightness as this. You can go from "I can't see wtf is on the screen" to "AHHHHHH! MY EYES, THEY ARE BURNING!" in half a second.
Recently bought mate 10. Compare to my current mate 9, I noticed the mate 10 screen brightness isn't as bright as the mate 9. Wonder why manufacturer decrease the maximum brightness of newer phone.

Max brightness is reached only when in auto mode+sunlight. Check the gsmareana review. Otherwise indoors the brightness is lower and cannot be manually toggled to reach the max brightness the display is capable off. Personally the brightness is more than enough for me in real usage. I use auto brightness and toggle it to about 50% brightness.
Many reviewers say that they can't get the 1200 nits advertised brightness. I'm fairly certain that the note 8's display is limited by power consumption limits for whatever reason. However if you use any app that supports the video enhancer the display looks to me to be 2x the brightness. I assume samsung did this to increase the battery life. I want to know if there is a way to always run the screen in its maximum brightness mode? Maybe we could develop an app that always runs the display in its maximum brightness.
I would like to force the phone to use video enhancer in all apps including the full ui.the demo units in the store are somehow overiding the screen max brightness and they stay on the full 1200 nits the entire time.ive comapred retail note 8s with auto brighness turned off and set to optimised and the brightness on full.the demo units are brighter on max brightness than retail units.its like the demo units are somehow forcing the screens to full brightness potential but all the time and thatswithout auto turned on.and to get that type of brightness on the retail units you can use video enhance but that only works for yt and another app i cant remeber.
But the demo note 8 phones are brighter than retail handsets on full brighness
I think this would be bad for the screen with time, not to speak about batt wear
Loving the Mi 8, especially after the 10.1.1 update, however the "auto" brightness Useless. Virtually every time you unlock the phone in low(ish) light its reset to a very low setting. I've had phones from many manufacturers over the last few years and they all seem to have managed to string together a half decent auto-brightness offering.
Does anyone know of this is something they're working on?
I have the same issue
I love everything about the new update but that issue made me hate the update. Anyone with a fix? Appreciate it.
Not sure if the same brightness bug is impacting AOD too, which reacts to light levels but so aggressively at night that it actually turns off.
Auto Brightness on MIUI has always been dodgy as ****. There's workarounds - check out Velis auto brightness - but they're an additional battery drain since the app is constantly running.
I felt like it's not that bad on the MI 8 though.
Cheers
Just giving Lux Lite Dash a go and seems to be doing the trick. You can manually adjust when needed but then commit to memory for the next time a specific lux is reached. I guess over time, like most phones, it will then be customised how you like it.
Will see what battery life is like though...
So far so good. Battery seems to be at the same level with Lux Lite Dash running.
Lux Lite had issues in the end. The max brightness was lower than that of the phone. Switched to Velis which seems to have an option to allow the phones auto (and max brightness) to kick in when there's bright sunlight.
I've been slacking a bit playing around with other things. It can be hard fully putting the watch thru it's paces inside the BB 14-day return window!
For AOD I will say I was disappointed initially. But I found with lower OPR% (~25% or less) if you crank the brightness above 6 or 7 it's decent. For OPR% in the high 30's and above (lighter & brighter faces, orange/white/silver/etc), I posted a workaround that I'm satisfied with or I'd be returning (otherwise such faces are barely visible in dim mode).
How are people finding the accuracy of GPS, and distance on runs?
What about heart rate accuracy when walking/jogging/lifting or other exercise? I tested vs. a BPM cuff and finger PulseOx, and it seems very accurate when sitting still.
What about BPM accuracy? Do you have to have your arm elevated the same as your heart (as you do with a BPM cuff measurement)? What kind of variability are you seeing vs. a cuff reading?
What about the SPo2 accuracy? How is it when sleeping? I forget the reason, but some fingertip monitors have fits of inaccuracy when sleeping because of signal strength drops.
Any issues with music storage and bluetooth playback?
