Hi All,
My Mi Max 2 running Android 7.1.2 Xenon HD was sprayed with water when charged.
When I discovered the water on the device, I immediately unplugged it however found the touchscreen unresponsive. None of the taps were being recognized.
I immediately powered off the phone, removed the phone, completely disassembled the phone except the battery. Then I dried all the parts and then used a hair dryer on very low heat until 100% dey. Then I assembled the phone and put it fully covered in a rice bowl for 48 hours.
Today after I turned it on, I find that everything including the touchscreen works as long as I don't turn off the screen. If the screen is turned off and back on, the touchscreen is 100% unresponsive. None of the taps are recognized. I verified this by turning ON Tap detection in developer options. Unfortunately the touchscreen doesnt work at all when I reboot into recovery (initially orangefox). I also tried using latest TWRP with the same result.
Googling this, general consensus is either a hardware fault (digitizer ?) or corrupt kernel. If it its the latter, there might be some hope with a factory reset. However given that changing recoveries didnt fix, am not too hopeful.
Can experts watching this thread please help with any diagnosis. Given the lock down, am so hoping for a way to fix this.
Thanks in advance.

lock your phone in twrp and check if touch working. if working than you may try flashing other roms in my view. Otherwise hardware problem and you have to show your phone to engineer

As I said in the OP, the phone touchscreen does not work at all in TWRP. I cant even lock it. If the screen is turned off after boot, the touchscreen dies. Fingerprint sensor works, volume buttons work, power buttons work. No response from the touch screen. No taps registered (I verified by turning on developer options to show highlight on tap).

Here's what is going on...
My Galaxy S I9000 (Bell Canada) was water damaged, after being dried for many days it turned on, but the battery almost immediately drained. I left the phone and forgot about it. Bought a new cheap phone without a SIM.
More recently I got a new battery for it and it turned on and was working great, staying charged and everything. When I went to the service provider to get a new SIM for it, we powered down the phone, pulled the battery and SIM card and put the new SIM in followed by the battery. Afterwards the phone would not power on, but the two face buttons on either side of the 'Home' button lit up and would react to touch. I tried removing the battery and SIM a few times and would get the same result.
After bringing my phone home and leaving it with the battery out for a few days, I thought I would try it again. It powered up again as if nothing was wrong. To test it again, I pulled the battery and SIM, replaced them, and my black screen/won't turn on problem returned.
Every so often it will power on and be useable. It is recognized by Kies, I've flashed it to firmware 2.3.4.
I'm looking for any helpful suggestions for what might solve my problem. I'm wondering if it's a hardware problem and short of isolating the part of the phone that is faulty and replacing it, the phone is toast.
Thanks for your time, and I apologize for the length of my post.
My friend has dropped the SGS into a pool before. Problem was fix after buying a new battery.
Either: Damaged screen + Contact. Or the reaction with water and the battery. hydrogen gas prevents screen from connecting to main-board.
It still turns on occasionally, and when it powers up, it's as if nothing is wrong. Screen works, displays everything fine, colour is crisp, screen reacts to touch. The big problem is it won't turn on all the time. Would what you said still explain this?

The only thing I know (assuming the screen or motherboard is 100% functioning) is hydrogen gas being present. You might know TV remote with old battery casually respond to presses. After cleaning contacts it should work again.
I disassembled the phone and cleaned all the contacts on the main board with rubbing alcohol, I did not do anything to the screen though. Should I try taking it apart again and breaking it down further? (ie. separate the screen?)

No, I am starting to think it's a hardware fault if that didn't work
I have recently purchased this phone via swappa and haven't had any issues prior to this and that has been three weeks (other than a light leak).
The issue that is happening is the LCD will not turn on. When the phone is unlocked via knock on or power button you can move your finger over where the lock circle would be and feel the vibrations showing that it does register the touch. Then usually I would just hold the power button till it rebooted and this would sometimes fix the problem, on a side note the boot LG logo and boot animation do not show up during this time simply the lock screen would randomly appear.
That is problem, now on to what I tried to fix it. I have put on an entirely different rom and the problem persists, I have also flashed a different kernel on the stock rom with no avail. I at first thought it could be due to a faulty proximity sensor, but the last time the screen was on I checked it with sensor box. One way I have been able to reproduce the problem is after locking it putting it in my pocket and waiting around five minutes, this then will make it so the LCD does not turn on ( Which makes it seem like it has something to do with deep sleep). Also something I just found since I was actually able to find the power off button, the screen also won't turn on when the phone is off and plugged into the charger (this makes it seem like hardware issue). It seems like as long as I keep the phone from going to deep sleep the LCD will turn back on.
Some of this makes it seem like a software issue other things make it seem like a hardware issue. I just was wondering if anyone had any ideas or if I need to buy a new screen, if the mobo is bad, or if I could fix this with software. Any and all ideas are welcome.
Thank you all in advance.
Hi,
Last week I used to be outside with much rainy condition.
Though it never got totally under water, many times it's screen got wet with substantial rain drops.
Slowly, phone started misbehaving with following symptoms,
1. Around 10% of left side of touch screen doesn't show response. I enabled show touches from developer option and when I try to touch left side, say "a" letter in keyboard, it doesn't show touches and pointer jumps immediately to left edge.
2. Many times, I am not able to unlock phone as no touch are detected.
3. After unlock, many times though I am not touching phone, it shows couple of pointers (I enabled show touches in developer option to trace this) on left edge. It keeps moving resulting in erratic behavior, say screen zooms in and out, some icons clicked automatic, deleted automatic etc.
4. Sometimes I noticed that capacitive buttons are also not responding.
For all above, I have to off (not complete switch off)and on the phone. After few attempts, it becomes responding except point 1 above.
I have reflashed ROM (Vivikat) just to ensure it's not software issue.
Now it seems hardware issue with following two possibilities...
1. It's matter of some moisture in phone only. I have to try hard to dry out all moisture and phone will become responding.
2. Digitizer has some issue and may call for replacement (I don't want to do that...:crying.
Can you guys share your views/experience and advise?

I just had touch screen issues but not with water or rain. It was the CPU. Almost whenever I overclocked it, I had touch screen issues. Both misbehaving and not behaving at all. Change the CPU frequency and restart the phone and see what happens. :good:

Thanks for your reply.
I have never overclocked my device.
However, I tried to underclocked it if by any chance, it can solve the issue.
But issue still there.
A small portion of left column on touch screen seems not responding or giving erratic behavior.
Does, water can damage digitizer to that extent that can not be recovered even after drying
Or, I should keep hope and wait more before I go for digitizer replacement

If the digitizer is damaged, it is probably done. But if you can open the open, check the digitizer and see if there are any things stuck on it. My recommendation: ask an engineer to open it and clean it with the special spray they use to clean electronic parts. Maybe the water has had only a side effect and it will be fixed by cleaning the digitizer.

I loved to hear your words, as I have still hope for resolving issue without replacement of digitizer :fingers-crossed:
I'll find some engineer to get it serviced....and post update.

You're Welcome buddy! :highfive:
Has anyone had issues with their Z3 compact screen becoming unresponsive to touches? This happened to me last night even after hard shutdown via power button + volume up key.
My phone is encrypted so after restarting, I was stuck at the code unlock screen but the touch screen was completely unresponsive. After a few more hard shutdowns, a few hours off and alot of cursing, the touch screen finally started working again as if nothing was wrong.
Any ideas guys? I don't want to send this phone in if this was a one time thing, but I'm afraid it won't be the only time...
I guess I'm the only case of this happening?

It can occur for lots of reasons
This can be only software lag instead of touch panel problem.
and even 3rd party app can freeze your phone like this.
anyway the possible solution and way to understand if it s software or hardware problem is to repair firmware by PC companion
:good:

The reason I don't think its software related is because after the reboot my phone goes into the device encryption unlock menu right away. This menu theoretically should have little to no software loaded at this point, yet it still didn't response to touch. Now, I did recently downgrade from the latest UK ROM to the next available U.S. ROM. Not sure if that may have affected anything...
No more problems yet though...

Was the phone wet? Water can mess with the capacitive screen but shouldn't still be a factor after drying it with a rag. I'm assuming you realized this already, but doesn't hurt to double check.

Screen is not the issue… its the system

My Z3 do this too.. i dont know what to do
Same here. Happend 5 minutes ago and since no response from the phone -.-"
I hope it settles itself again.
Edit:
Now it works again. Strange behavior
I just returned my Z3c because of a touch screen malfunction. But in my case, it wasn't unresponsive, it just went nuts. It located taps at totally different spots from where I was touching, so typing, scrolling, etc. just was impossible. Luckily, this state only lasted for a couple of seconds up to a minute max, but occurred several times a day. Phone now exchanged for the "big" Z3 (due to arrive tomorrow), hope it hasn't the same issues.
I have found the reason my phone was unresponsive. I disabled some apps through adb, one of them seems to have caused the issue (dunno which though).
So I just restored the phone using the pc companion and since then no unresponsive touch screen.
Sent from my D5803 using XDA Free mobile app
Z3 Compact top half of touch screen not working
The top half of the screen of my Z3 Compact doesn't register any touches anymore. The bottom half is OK.
The phone wasn't dropped or anything. I did a repair with PC Companion and nothing, still the same....
Sigh!
hello, well the same thing is happened to me but my phon is z3 dual, this happened just before hour ago
Any solutions ..
I've just bought it about 2 weeks ago
I have the same problem, the touch is not responding and I can't use the phone since yesterday.
did reset by buttons and also by that yellow reset button and still nothing, it powers on but I am stuck when it asks me to enter the PIN code, because the touch is not working.
Anyone got a solution for that?
Which apps you have disabled on adb and say cause that issue?
Same trouble over here. Experimenting this unresponsive touch panel since today, several hours without working at all. I just blocked some boatware apps, but this should not affect touch panel, right?
Just restored the whole phone using official from Sony PC Companion software. It remains the same trouble with touch panel.
Today, in house, we put the phone under tap water just a blink. Do you think this could have damaged the device, though is water resistant? Do you know where are the humidity sensors, that could have change? Thank you for helping!

any updates guys?
the bottom half of the screen on my z3 stopped working, cant unlock coz cant type pin =[
any update guys??
i cant connect with pc companion due cant unlock my device..any helpful tips???
pls..need some help
Same damn problem
Any other solutions? Same problem here. Held it under a tap a bit last night, and since then its gone off unresponsive two different times.
I have some problem with touchsreen. All work fine until I put my device in pocket (or press him). After I take out my device I can't unlock him, and me need turn off screen and turn on him several times, until touchsreen stabilized.
Who have simmilar problem with touchscreen?
same here :/
same here. I can click few times right after I turn on the screen but only for one second.
same here... tried reflashing etc. via *#7353# -> dot mode, I can see that a spot is being "pressed" in the middle of the display and 1,5cm down from the top. And constantly, thus another touch is not possible. Usually after locking the phone and turning the display on again it works for some time. But even in the recovery it doenst work... sometimes... under key test. Randomly the touchscreen is being pressed.
Had no problems until now... always had a screen protector foil on, but even with a new one and without one it doenst work. Did not dropped my phone, neither I have screen cracks etc...
Any suggestions?
