I'm not sure how my phone go to this state, but I remember trying to flash a rom for some reason and it failed. I may have been doing that as the phone had problems, its been a few years. Anyway, after the faulty flashing the screen was basically TV static anytime I tried to power it on, and it would power off on its own (i.e. I couldn't power it down myself).
I'm not sure if the phone even charges at this point (been a few years since I tried to revive it)
I wanna follow this guide: https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s6/general/guide-repair-hard-bricked-devices-t3573865
How can I tell if my phone is "dead-dead" or just "kinda-dead"?
Does Download mode work?
(while charging, press volume down + power + home button)
If yes,
download latest samfirm on pc.
choose your product name and csc and download the stock rom.
download odin, connect your phone to pc & flash the stock rom.
If no,
i dont know.

Ok i was running a custom version of 2.2 FroYo on my captivate and it was running fine. I backed up my old version using Clockwork Recovery. Well i decided to get brave and flash back to my stock 2.1 ROM.
When i did that alls i can get is the AT&T boot screen. It will sit there for an hour if i left it. I tried entering recovery bode (power, vol up/down) but it just sits at that screen.
Is there any hope to recovering it? I use a MAC but im about to boot Win7 on it to run ODIN, but i cant get into any flash/recvoery mode....
Suggestions?
You want to try and get into Download Mode, not Recovery. Have you tried the various button combos to get into Download Mode yet?
If the various button combos ultimately don't work, you can use something called a JIG to force your phone into Download mode.
What is the button combo for download mode? also with is 'JIG'? Im no total newb but i am new to this who flashing/kernel modifying thing.
I have a Nexus S now which i love but i need the Galaxy running for my AT&T company SIM card....
Also do i NEED ODIN?
There are like 4+ different button combos for Download Mode. If you search, I'm sure you'll find them all. The one I remember is:
1. Remove battery, SIM, microSD card (if you have one)
2. Wait at least 10 seconds with the phone off
3. Hold Volume Up/Volume Down keys, do not let go
4. While holding the volume keys, insert the battery into the phone
If this worked, the phone should almost instantly be in Download Mode.
Once in Download Mode, you want to use Odin (generally the One-Click JF6 version) to flash your phone to a working state again.
A JIG is a microUSB plug that will force your phone into Download Mode, if Download Mode is still possible on your phone. You can make them with a MicroUSB plug and resistors, or buy one. The link in my signature is an example of what a purchased one would look like.
I have a captivate model SGH-i896
I want to flash custom rom, it seem I screw that up some how.
Now I cannot get back into Download mode
What I did is I trip on the cable when I was trying to flash I897UCJH2 when using Odin.
Only thing I have on Odin was I897UCJH2 and 512.pit
I have try all type of combination on the the phone, button first, battery first, cable first.
What should I do now, short of returning the phone to Rogers and get another one?
Did I hard brick it because I897UCJH2 contain a bootloader?
Please help.
Some extra info: My phone can still be detected via usb, and during Odin the device still show.
Pull the battery, use the button combo you usually use and when that screen comes on and odin detects it try and flash from that screen.
can you explain the steps a little more?
this is what I did.
-open odin
-hold down vol up+down + power
-plug in usb
-put in battery
in that sequence, and that did not work
you may not see the dl mode screen. that is just an image in the firmware, if the flash was disconnected before that image was loaded to the phone the only image there for it to call on when dl mode is started is the phone...!....pc screen. so if odin recognizes it when in that screen try and flash from there.
if that still doesnt work i say make/buy a jig. they are never not a good idea to have.
Original AT&T Captivate, recently installed clockwork, rooted and have been working on CM 10.0 and CM 10.1 - phone had been working normally.
I had previously made a backup of the original (stock) ROM and wanted to go back in there to get my kid's game save states so I held down the power button while holding down vol up and vol down, told the phone to restore from the backup I had made prior to flashing the CM ROM. The phone thought for awhile to do its thing, then I used the menu to reboot the device.
Now the phone powers up to the AT&T World Phone (white background) screen and never does anything else. It does not matter if I am doing a simple power on or if I am doing power on + vol up+vol down buttons, I get the white AT&T screen and nothing else.
If I hold down the volume buttons and insert the USB cable I get the icon of the android shoveling piles of stuff but don't know what I am able to do with that.

Try holding both volumes + power until you see AT&T's white screen then release. Give it a few attempts to get in recovery. When you go back like this, you need to factory reset, hence why you're stuck atm.
If it doesn't work after a few tries, look below:
The yellow android with shovel = Download mode. You'll need it to get back up.
So download Odin KK4 without bootloaders. Once done, get in download mode and flash it.
You can restore your backup once that's done or work your way back up to CM10.1 (or any other ROM).
Is Odin better/safer than Heimdall which is what I used in the first place?
At any rate, the Odin this has been running for about 10 minutes now: the android icon has the word "Downloading..." under the yellow triangle and the bottom line in Odin is <ID:0/004> DO NOT TURN OFF TARGET!!
How long should this run before I get nervous?
See the Captivate - PC Connection Issues...thread. It should help...http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=33227541&postcount=1
U probably r having issues with the drivers that were installed for Heimdall. Those drivers are only installed to the one specific usb port u were connected to during said install.
So if u wanna use Odin then simply use a different usb port on ur pc. Odin uses the drivers from Samsung.
And to answer ur questions....Heimdall is technically safer than Odin. And once ur pc recognizes ur phone, the Odin or Heimdall flash should take less that 5 minutes.

Long story short, I have the I8190L version of the phone, currently on stock ROM. I got the phone a few weeks ago and I have rooted it right away, there were no problems while rooting, I used the Galaxy S3 mini toolkit and used the "Flash Insecure Boot Image and Root device" option, with SuperSU 1.25. Fast forward to right now, I want to install CyanogenMod, so I went and tried to boot my phone into Download Mode, to try and flash CWM recovery in order to install the Cyanogen ROM, but I simply can't start download mode, when connected to the USB pressing the Vol up + menu + power sequence, the phone just starts normally (The OS will load completely). adb reboot download doesn't work too, vol up + vol down + power and plugging in the usb cable doesn't work.. I did several hard resets and I removed root too, noone of those worked. I don't know if that is relevant, but I installed a patched google play (4.1.10 Chelpus version), I could not find a way to remove that. I can't reroot too because I would need to start my phone in download mode. Anyone knows what is happening?

are you connecting your phone to PC before you go to download-mode???
try this: download-mode (Vol up + Menu + Power) and now connect your device with your computer!
flash CWM or whatever you want...

That did not work, when it is about to go to download mode it seems that it fails and either boots the OS or just turns off (depends on how much I hold the buttons), and since adb reboot download doesn't work I think something got corrupted (adb finds the device and reboots it, but it just starts up normally).
I'm not sure why, but noone of the articles I read mentioned the actual CORRECT download mode sequence, which is: Volume Down + Home + Power buttons, and then click on Volume Up, it is working now. Thanks.

Well if you looked at the screen you would know what to press after vol down+home+power
oh my God,
you are all right.
i mixed up step one and two of Download-Mode - sorry
first you have to push Vol Down + Menu + Power (few seconds)
start odin as admin
second you connect your device to PC
third you push Vol Up
fourth you flash via Odin.
I often flash ROMs via Odin and / or use CWM so that works automatically ....

Title says it all. But for those that want to know a bit more in detail about what's going on, I tried to install this custom ROM: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/rom-oneui-2-5-twrp-ncx-2-5-for-a71-sm-a715f.4174135/ Clearly I did something wrong (a bit more clarification in that guide would help people not used to rooting an Android device getting through that process easier), so now I want to go to square 1 by installing the stock ROM again. But the thing is, after installing multidisabler through TWRP, the phone is not permanently stuck into a bootloop and now I can't even go into safemode, nor download mode, and I can't enter the recovery mode, the only thing my phone is capable of doing is to restart by itself by holding the volume down and the power buttons at the same time, and now ADB nor Fastboot can't detect my device (the PC does a Samsung device being connected though, so it's not a hardbrick, I guess).
Samsung devices do not use Fastboot. You should restore through Odin instead.
Try the following:
1. Download Odin on your computer, you can get it from here. Extract it into a folder.
2. Download the firmware for your device. Find out your device model first and then look on http://samfw.com, I've downloaded from there a lot in the past, it works great.
3. Extract the firmware, you should get five files: AP, BL, CP, CSC, and HOME_CSC.
4. Make sure your device is powered off, and press power + volume down + bixby. You should be asked to confirm you want to enter download mode, press the volume up button.
5. Plug your device into the computer, then select the files for all the slots. Use CSC, not HOME_CSC for CSC (CSC is for fresh restore, HOME_CSC is for software update).
6. A device should show in the top bar, something like [COM:6]. This means your device is connected. If it isn't there, make sure your device is plugged in and in Download Mode.
7. Click flash. The firmware should start to flash and there should be a progress bar in Download Mode. Once it's finished your device should reboot into the system.

Well, trying to reflash everything through Odin has been a thing I tried to do, but how am I supposed to shutdown a phone that is stuck at the Samsung logo (is there any combination to shutdown a Samsung during the boot process?)? And even after that, how am I supposed to press "power + volume down + bixby" if both the power and bixby buttons are the same buttons?

I tried entering Download Mode hours ago, but to no avail. Even before flashing mutidisabler through TWRP (and thus, the phone was working), I had to use ADB in order to make my phone be able to enter Recovery Mode, since the combo for recovery and download mode just made my phone make a loud noise and restart my phone onto safe mode.
Ok, here's an update, apparently pressing those buttons, makes the screen have the same, but at least Odin recognizes the drive, but now I'm stuck at this error: "Complete(Write) operation failed."
Something's weird here, I'm 99.9% sure I did activate USB debugging for this phone, although that was just before wiping the entire drive before the phone got stuck in this loop.
Fixed. Many thanks to @hainguyenthao for helping me out ^^

I'm sorry to hear that you had trouble installing the ROM and I'm glad you were able to fix it.
I unfortunately can't see a way that I could make the tutorial on how to install the ROM any easier. I'm almost certain I covered all my bases going over the perquisites and how to install the ROM. I also have a Telegram group in that thread so that users can join if they are ever stuck in any of the steps so that either me or other users that have successfully installed the ROM can help people in doubt since I'm not available 100% of the time. If you ever decide to give it a try again, don't be shy, you can always join the group and request for help.
