battery question please read - Google Pixel 4 XL Questions & Answers

I have had the Pixel 4 XL for 2 months when I first got it the battery was amazing. It was lasting about 1 and 1/2 days. Now it says based on your usage that only lasts about 20 hours. Does anybody have the same issue? And if so how did they fix it do I just keep the phone on and standby mode and my battery usage will go up what do you guys suggest thank you in advance

Lower your usage or factory reset it to wipe the usage info

bradmill08, if anything the battery should get better after a period of use with the device not the other way around. There are so many things that could be the culprit, you need to dig a little deeper into what is actually using the battery. A wipe of the device is an option but I would work on figuring out what the issue(s) is/are first. Also, could be hardware, not out the realm of possibility the battery is defective.

Wiping is the extreme thing to do. There's no need to do that. It really depends on your usage. If you've been using your phone more since you've gotten it, the estimate is going to decrease. I'm down to only 12 hours and 14 minutes. But if I don't charge it overnight for a few nights in a row, that idle time will increase my "Full charge lasts about".

[Q] Nexus One Battery Life Problem

Hi, I've been reading through xda-developers forums for a long time now and i'm happy to say you all have helped me through all the problems i've ever face with my N1. This is my first thread here. Sadly, with a weird problem.
I've had the N1 since google first gave it to its employees till this January, then i got the Gnex. So, I gave my N1 to my mom cuz' she seemed to like it. Anyway, until the day i handed it over to her I used to get a solid 24 ~ 40 hours of battery life on normal day-to-day usage. I factory reset the phone and handed it over to her. Since she got it, she's been complaining that the battery doesn't last more than 3 or 4 hours and it gets ridiculously hot when charging (stock battery). So, I told her to get a new battery from amazon and she did. But, the problem still persists with this new battery too.
It's running on Stock rom.
So, any suggestions please?
You can benchmark you battery life time with this application :
Battery Drain
I was used to have 5% per hour with my stock rom. But When using it much a day, I could reach more than 25%/hour. Wich correspond to 4 hour of battery life

[Q] Is it normal?

is it normal to have only about 4 hours of screen on in xperia z1?
how come because it is a 3000mAh battery?
or is my battery a faulty one?

I usually charge my phone around 20% - 30% so thats about 4 - 5 hours screen on time.

4-5 hours screen time for 70%? mine lasts a little shorter. 80% for me is 4 hours screen on.

i dont have that many apps in my z1 right now. it is only about 2 weeks old or so. not more than 1 month. is it true that li-ion batteries tend to have its full capacity after certain charging cycles?.
i only use my z1 for texting because i am quite busy with my work.

I'm not sure if its true but I've heard people talk about it. Do what I do, go under developer options and limit background process to 3. Make sure stuff like nfc, bluetooth and gps are off too when you're not using them and don't overcharge the phone

I get 3/4 hours of screen, never got more than 4 and forget 5. Who get 5 or 6 I just don't know how they do that, maybe as I am on 4.3 and not on 4.4 but to me it should not make any difference.
Probably, as the phone is assembled with different hardware pices, like 2 lcd models, then can influence on battery consumption.
Hi,
I used to get 5-6 hours screen on time, but then I started to use more apps and specially listen to more music on it, with 4 hours of music listening I was getting 4 hours of screen on time. Maybe you should try letting it get completely discharged and then charge completely while off. When I was getting a bad battery life it helped me .

Go to Battery health test, then it should say if your battery is ok or not.

I'm in the same boat as you, my Z1 is running KitKat all stock and after a clean install my battery just drains and both GSam battery monitor and the stock battery metre show that the android os and android system take up most of the battery after the screen

Actually I do not complain of battery life when the Phone is in idle as I get more than 4 days in standby with a 30minutes on screen, what bothers me is the time on screen, which is no more than 4 hours. If you cannot get 3/4 days in standby then you have look for sapplication which working in background and eat your battery.

Well, If i use the phone with 3 or 4 hours screen on time I have to charge every night, sometimes 1.5 day with 2 hours screen time. You mean three quarters of a day? I think I will not lost more than 15% if I leave it standby for 3/4 of day(maybe).

Then I don't know where is the problem.
In my opinnion this depends on how you use the 3-5 hours display time.
If they are continuous it doesnt use that much power. When i'm using it at work (don't judge me) i can get up to 6 continuous hours.
When im using it over the day (12-15 hours) i get around 4 hours and a litte more, wich is kinda "hardcore-user" for most people.
My nexus 4 never lastet that long, i could just get over 2 hours display time when i used it over the day and 3 hours at work...
I usually drain about 20% of the battery for every screen on hour (or about 5 hours of screen on per full charge), and that's using Facebook for a long time (a very well known battery killer).Even on my worst days, I never get less than 3.5-4 hours of screen on per charge. However, I tend to keep brightness very low.
Check the battery usage per application using either the built-in monitor or something like GSam battery monitor. You may have a bad application, or too high brightness, or even low signal strength.

all those that get 5-6 hours of sot, are you decrypted or stock

Just finished reading through the 58 page post about battery life. Seems people are either getting about 6 sot or only 3 sot. I'm in the second group. Was curious if those that are getting near the 6 sot, if you are stock, rooted and decrypted, or running something custom.
Also, might not make a difference, but is your phone from Google or operator like t mobile
i get from 6 to nearly 8 hours sot, depending what im doing. root or stock, that didnt matter, same as encrypted and decrypted, it doesnt matter(im encrypted). i changed to the rastapop rom and lean kernel, and im still getting about the same battery life. most importantly for battery life is your signal quality, how you decide to set up your device, and which apps you chose to install. where i bought my phone has no bearing on its battery life(lol).
That is the purpose of the battery thread. It'd be nice if all posted the stats I mention in the OP. But to answer your question I get the same either way... All stock locked encrypted or rooted unlocked decrypted.
I got 5hrs sot with 24hrs unplugged until recently but that's because I installed some apps that want to keep my device awake for 3hrs a day. I am encrypted and running stock but am rooted.
I get 4hours on lowest brightness.. Includes WiFi browsing, 4g, videos, camera, music.. About 30mins of calls..
Also includes pushbullet that's on most of the time..
I don't understand how people get such good battery life.
Also that's only 12 hours of the phone being unplugged.. I'm at 12% right now.
I get 6-8 hours SOT, and three days between charges. It does not change if it is decrypted or not. I have tried it both ways and there is no discernable difference in battery with or without decryption.

3 days? How little do you use your phone? I couldn't make it a day and a half, nonetheless 3.

I understand where the OP is coming from. I can't get that kind of battery life either. I notice that I can get nearly 5 hours SOT if I constantly use the phone as soon as I take it off the charger. If there is a lot of standby time mixed in, 3.5 to 4 hours is around the max I can achieve. I'm 100 percent stock unrooted.
I'm on at&t, rooted, and no encryption. Other than that, completely stock.

I need to root to have service disabler working. I know that in the past this did not make a difference to ota updates, but i think in 5.0 it does. If i root, will i still get the ota updates when they come out
Is it possible that some units have bad battery or hardware that causes the difference. I have greenify running already and it did not seem to make a difference today. Phone still only got 3.5 sot. I loose about 10% per hour.

Here is my post in the battery thread where I explain what I did:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=57088676
Stock, ordered from Motorola, and getting 4-6 SOT.
Stock ROM and kernel, rooted, encrypted , adaptive brightness on, ambient display off ( i use double tap to wake) getting 4-6 hours SOT with 16ish hours off charger
PureShamu + lean kernel decrypted. No greenify, No app freezing. However I'm currently undervolted - 75 mv across the board. I avg 6 hr sot.
I'm running Validus ROM + Sensei Kernel, Decrypted , Greenify and Ambient Screen is off.
I average around 7 hours SOT. I have no issues making it through my typical day. Loving the Nexus!
Stock unrooted
I average about 10 hrs. Off the charger, with the screen on for about 8-9 of those hours. I plug it up at 10% and 1hr later I have 93% battery. I've noticed that all of my phones required this. LgG2, evo 4glte, evo 3d, ogevo.. I guess I'm just a heavier user than most.

Screen on time

It's amazing how much we actually use our phones in a given day, especially when we watch "videos"! Rate this thread to express how many hours of screen-on time you can get on the Samsung Galaxy Note5 before depleting the battery.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
SOT is usually 1 hour 23 minutes at 50%. With the Display brightness a little less than half.
The biggest culprit is Android OS stay awake time is always high.
Man I've been more than impressed by my SOT of the Note 5 compared to my crappy old Nexus 6. I can get 4-5 hours on here vs the 3 hours max I got on the N6. Blows me away. So much better phone than that was too.
I normally see about 3hrs on nougat where as MM I usually got closer to 4 hours which is a bummer but still reasonable. Main issue is the screen off battery drain on nougat. Seems to want to drain 8-10% per hour no matter what I'm doing most days.
It's ridiculous. I've drained my new note 5 in 2 hours SOT just browsing Web and reading this forum. I've got 4-5 hours of browsing with my old note 2. That's just crazy low. Xiaomi MI max 2 can easily give you 8 hours SOT. Thinking of exchange already :/
I don't understand how it is possible that every big review on the Internet that I found claims it is more than 8 or 10 hours of Web browsing possible on note 5! How can it be true? Some tests on YouTube shows there is only 4 hours from 100 to 0 without heavy cpu and network utilisation and just screen on...
I consider myself as a Power user. I Only get 2:30 hours no matter the screen resolution, 1080P or 2K. Nougat or Marshmallow doesn't matter. But I'm OK with that, I have a lot of apps and 3 Gmail accounts so I'm getting notifications all day long.
Oh man flashing the n fuel xl Rom was probably the best thing I've done with my note 5. Sot is still lingering around 3 hours or less but stand by time has literally doubled. Now when the screen is off, the phone actually chills out and doesn't burn up battery.
Went from 12-13 hours to 25-26 hours with my normal usage.
new note 5 user here
after reading many of your comment guys, i feel really lucky
i had a note 2 for more than 4 years (still have it) and with my average use i usually get 3.5-4 hours of screen time on
i just bought a note 5 like a week ago and i'm getting more than 6 hours of screen time on
i use the powersaving mode on "mid" and i usually dont need more than a low brightness ... i dont use my phone for games that much cuz i have a ps4 for that ... usually use it for social media and these stuff
i know its very good only bcuz i just got it but with my experience on the note 2 i will try not to drain the battery life and keep it good
note is just the best there is

Oh can you show me a link to the Rom? I am not a heavy user so about 2h sot is fine for me. However I need my phone to be able to last longer while in Standby. I get only 11hr of the phone, including 2hr sot now.
My note 5 battery is dropping >10% per hour with light use. SOT guesstimate to be about 3 hours. Standby drain is great but not when I start using it. Such battery drain defeats the purpose of a smartphone. I guess Samsung has a reason to design the phone with irreplaceable battery. Ordered the S8+ as replacement.
I was studying my battery life/SOT today. I managed to take some screen shots when my phone was around 8%. I'll upload them a little later when my phone is charged up. I let it drain all the way to try and calibrate it. I notice it shut off today at 2%. Around 8% I noticed my screen on time was over 5 hours or higher. Can't recall now the exact number but it seemed unusually high. I think I got around 10 hours of battery life. Once I post screen shots later can someone tell me if they seem accurate and if I get good battery life since I just upgraded to Nougat?

True. Irrespective of MM/Nougat, there is not much we can do about SOT. The best case can be just above 4 hrs. I am on PureX ROM of Rajeev. Between FuelXL and PureX, the best part is on Deep sleep. When the screen is off, the power consumption is close to Zero. The only reason appears to be that both the ROMs are heavily debloated. Any further major improvement to battery life of Note 5 can be only with Oreo ROM. In my Oneplus, i flashed custom Oreo ROM and the battery life is dramatically extended. So, lets wait and pray for Oreo form Note 5.
So everyone on stock N gets around 3-3.30hrs of sot. Felt relieved to read becoz i was worried and thought mayb my phones battery has loosen its capacity.
Btw is there any app that can tell us exact wear level of the battery?? I tried googling some apps but none gave me the exact info that I needed.
I thought my battery was still bad even after changing it but I'm getting well over 3 hours of screen time so it looks like I'm all good for now
I have 4.5-6 hours SOT every day. I'm on stock N, GPS, wifi, sync and lte on all the time. However, every now and then I make a cache reset in recovery, always after a new app installation. Guess my system is quite clean. Battery life is awesome om this device.

Question How is your batterylife?

I know it depends how you using it and so on. But generally?
I think mine is worse then pixel 4 xl. Have only charged it like 4 times but still. Using some Instagram, Facebook, Spotify, news , youtube.
Mostly wifi and feels like battery is dropping really fast.
I'm getting 7-8 hours SoT when battery hitting around 25-30% left. Here's my thread from my first findings.
Battery life?
So I'm coming from a 3 XL, and I even got the battery replaced April 2021, and I was getting about four hours SoT. My 7 in only two days is blowing my mind. Yesterday I had five hours SoT, and today after a full charge, It went from 100% to 99%...
forum.xda-developers.com
Today's usage.
its about the same as pixel 6 for me maybe a little less from daily usage...but smoother for sure and the phone is a little bit smaller which is always a plus
My battery sucks ATM. Only had like 3 full charges so might settle and getting better , hopefully
Another quick update. Haven't used the phone that much yesterday or today yet, and I'm happy with standby time. Over 34 hours off the charger with over 4 hours SoT, and still has over 40% battery.

LOL what do you want? 20 hours SoT? Maybe because I'm coming from a 3 XL with a 3430 battery that after 4 hours of SoT, and only being off the charger for 12 hours, not well over 30, my battery would be at 10%, not 40%, but to me this is freaking awesome battery life.

Mine is honestly making me regret buying the phone. Too late, sent my trade in yesterday.
I previously had the Pixel 5a and got around 9.5 hours of screen on time over 24 hours. I think most days I could go about 30 hours before running empty.
My P7 gets around 6 hours of screen time over about 18 hours.
So a battery that's 7% smaller is seeing battery life more than 30% worse.
I'm not very happy with the battery life as you can tell, and I just hope a software update can improve things.

Other than the battery life the phone is fantastic haha. It's not unmanageable, I do keep good high-watt chargers in most places like home, work, car, etc. But sometimes I go do something all day and I'm not near a charger. Guess I'll just get used to using battery saver mode in those situations.
I do enjoy the phone, but the battery giving me anxiety is not very fun.

dont reference your SOT, reference it to your previous phone, everone usage SOT is different, one person maybe have 5 hours SOT but on the camera for 70% one person may have 10 hours but only use it for texting or internet.
What ways have you guys found to extend battery life during normal use? Without having to severely reduce the functionality of the phone, ie 5g or reducing screen brightness a ton. I feel like a modern phone a lot of the point is the screen and 5g so those I wouldn't want to sacrifice
Are there settings or other apps that can help? I'm fairly new to Android and so far I've been a bit disappointed with the battery life of the P7.

What kind of battery life are you getting? I only play around on mine (Instagram, Pinterest, SnapChat, and some Candy Crush games), and my main drain is Clash Royale, and I get around 7-8 hour SoT with 20% remaining. I switched 5G off, and only use LTE because 5G (at least in my area) is bad.
Man, y'all must've been spoiled with like 10+ hours of SOT with your old phones... I get around 6-8 with 30 hrs total which I think is pretty dang good. But like someone else said SOT will be much different from person to person based on device usage. I watched a 2hr downloaded movie from Netflix with airplane mode on and it only dropped 12%. And with adaptive charging, I just charge it all night which it will charge, slowly, till full until my alarm goes off.

Exactly. My experience is the opposite though. I came from a 3 XL, and by the time I switched from it to the 7 my battery capacity was down to around 2800. My 7 is like a God send for me. 7-8 hours SoT with the same use as my 3 XL, and I still have 30% left, when my 3 XL would be down to 2%. I couldn't be happier.
I came from the OnePlus9 and all around the OnePlus9 is a better device.
Google has a great UI experience, but these Tensor2 chips do not compete in performance or efficiency with the Snapdragon 888s or higher.
Theyre missing a lot of the refinement that Qualcomm has done with the hardware and it shows.
For those coming from a Pixel 3-5 series, yes this is a big upgrade, and many got great trade-in deals which is what made me give this phone a shot. It does not however live up to it's MSRP. Im hoping Google is able to refine things to greatly improve efficiency on these devices.
