Updating Firmware on a Rooted Phone with TWRP - ASUS ROG Phone II Questions & Answers

Hello
I have an ROG Phone 2 12/512 which should be a WW version (I'm not sure, can someone tell me how to check)
When I bought the phone the place I bought it from rooted then did something for the IMEI registration (In Turkey importing a phone and registering is 300€ almost)
I asked them to leave it rooted since I always used my last phone rooted (Galaxy S7)
The phone is currently on Android 9, 5 July 2019 Security patch
What I want to do is update my firmware and then if necessary root my phone again
I'm pretty used to the Samsung environment and am used to using Odin
This Asus phone is pretty new to me and I don't know the tools and the things I should be aware of
Can someone give me a head start on what I should use and what I should do to update my phone with the stock firmware.
The sticker on the back of the phone says ASUS 1001DC and there is no tencent logo as far as I can see that is why I believe it is a WW version
Edit 1: Also whenever I reboot my device there is an Unlocked Bootloader Warning
Thank you

You can use 'device info hw' from playstore to check your fingerprint. Under 'system' it'll say if you're on WW rom and also that your device fingerprint matches - needs to also be WW to update, not CN.
That app will also tell you the exact rom version you are running. Now, if you're a hardcore gamer, it might be best to update to latest A9 and stay with that for the time being. Some users report that it's best for gaming. Provided your fingerprint matches your rom, you can go ahead and download the latest A9 update which is 1910.64 and can be found in the guides section. Be sure to download the full rom zip and place it in the root of internal storage. Reboot and choose to install the update when prompted. Provided the update reaches 100% without fail, DON'T choose reboot now, select reboot later. Go to magisk manager, choose install magisk, then choose install magisk after ota. That'll give you root again (if that is what you want). Then reboot. That'll put you on the latest A9 rom.
However, the update may fail as you have a magisk-patched boot img. If it does report back here
If you want the latest A10, then repeat the same process after downloading latest A10 which ends with 2002.32, which can also be found in the guides section.
Good luck

Hello;
I could only do it today, was a bit busy
I tried A9 update and it was successful.
Thank you for your help.
Made it very easy for me.
I read up on the A10 update and although I'm not a phone gamer much the comments weren't that good on the update.
I will wait for the next one and depending on the comments will update to it.
Thanks again

Urgent help regarding downgrading from pie to oreo or nougat....

Hi. i need urgent help regarding downgrading my galaxy note 8 from pie to oreo or nougat. i am using android pie from last 1 month. some of my apps stop working so i decided to downgrade from pie to oreo. i had downloaded oreo firmware december 2018 version from sammobile and tried to flash with odin 3.13.1 but it failed. i had tried different versions of odin but every time flashing stuck at set partition nand write start.i always run odin as administrator. i also tried to flash different firmware version like sept version of oreo but still it failed. i downloaded nougat firmware from sammobile. it flashed normally and i was happy but when my phone restarted i was shocked. my device was factory reseted but with android pie version. it looked flashing nougat only formatted my device. i am tired. i tried every damn thing. i tried changing usb port, tried differant usb cable, reinstalled device drivers, made sure that usb debugging is on , even tried on differant pc. but no result. then i tried emergency software recovery in smart switch. if i connect my phone switched on then smart switch discover my device but when i connect my device in download mode then smart switch says that device not supported. i contacted service centre but they say they do not downgrade the device.please please please someone help me. i am attaching a screenshot of odin stuck at nand write start.

Unfortunately you can't downgrade. Once you have flashed a higher bootloader version you are stuck with it.
If you are on bootloader v5 you may be able to downgrade to the last Oreo build, I am not 100% sure on that though.
Only if they are same bootloader

You need to be rooted to be able to get that working again, some roms also have that patched already...
Although the thread is about the s7 I believe it is exactly the same for our note 8.

I dont want to root again.... rooting will not let banking apps work.moreover if i wanted to root. Root files for note 8 pie are not available right now. I installed patched app but it does not have heart rate monitor and spo2 which renders heart rate sensor useless.... thats why i am so desperate for that app

You can flash TWRP, copy /system/build.prop to the PC or SD Card, edit it on the PC, put it back in /system.
Once you are done, just flash stock revovery via TWRP.
It sounds hard, but it's eazy if you know what you are doing. Banking apps will still work, and with build.prop edited s health will work too.
I am not gonna walk you trough the entire process but this is a summary.

Oooh that, it's nothin.
You just need to hold volume up + bixby and power just before the phone auto restarts from download mode. When you do that it will boot twrp.
If you don't understand it go watch MaxLee on youtube, his method of flashing twrp on s8/n8

The way I know it, there is no way without twrp or root, and you said you don't want root because of banking apps.
If you flash twrp, do the thing with build.prop, and then flash stock recovery, you could still recive OTA updates and banking apps will work.
You just have to set up s health before the next OTA because that will revert built.prop back to normal.
But as long as you set up s health before that it will be ok.

Leave that bro coz m not ready to do that. Just help me with 1 thing if possible. There was other way to use s health on knox tripped device. That was downloading s health 4.8 version install it and open it. It will stuck at loading screen. Update it and it will work fine. Earlier i get it working that way when my device has oreo version. But now after pie update when i try to install any s health apk before version 5 that is 4.5, 4.7 or 4.8. I always get a message app not installed. After version 5 app get installed but again with root problem. Can u help me with installing old version. I dont know why s health old version is not getting installed. I had some other apps that are now discontinued. That apps get installed easily

The reason you can't install the modded version is because the version that was modded is less than pre-installed version on the device. As of now, you can't downgrade apps, only upgrade. Your only option is to wait for someone to patch a later version from the version you got installed on your phone.
I think someone can even just change a number in AndroidManifest.xml install it and then just upgrade.
I'm sure a patched version will pop-up again somewhere on xda, just make sure it's later version than the version pre-installed into the system.

Question regarding convert CN WW fingerprint (Newbie)

Hello everyone,
I just got my phone today. The unit came with global rom but after checked with hw, on the fingerprint section it's still cn and after checking in Play store, it said 'devie is not certified'. I'm a little bit afraid that I won't receive any update on Play store (games) so I decide to change it.
After reading many posts and guides here in xda, still confused so I got some questions to ask.
1. Do I need to install the global rom on my phone again (as I see many guides start with upgrading their rom)
2. What version do I need to download and where can I find the safe software version.
3. If you give me a guide link please tell me if I need to skip which step or follow every steps.
4. Is it possible if I want to stay at 1908.12? (with the current firmware but ww fingerprint, instead of the latest version)
Edit: What's the reason for changing fingerprint version? If I just want to update games+apps or receive apps update, Safely. Do I need to care changing the fingerprint version? What I'm afraid are 1. I don't receive any app+game update. 2. It's not safe even though updating through legit play store.
My current rom: PKQ1.190414.001.WW_Phone-16.0631.1908.12
HW: asus/CN_I001D/ASUS_I001_1:9/PKQ1.190414.001/16.0631.1908.12-0:user/release-keys
Ps: I don't know how to attach screenshots. I can only see image icon but it just ask me to paste a url.
Thank you for your help.

1. You don't need to install again.
2. Always download the latest possible rom you can find. Just remember that there are two kinds of rom you can download, one is the "RAW" rom, and the other is the rom you find on official Asus site.
3. There's a very straightforward guide in Guides section, read it.
4. It is possible to stay where you are now.
Now to help you understand the process,
1st: you need to root your phone if currently not rooted. And to root your phone you need to unlock your bootloader first. And to unlock your bootloader you need the official unlocking tool found at the Asus website.
2nd: after rooting, you should follow the step where you change your fingerprint from CN to WW. Read at Guides Section. You need to do this in order to fully make your rom WW.
3rd: after you changed your fingerprint, you have two choices, stay rooted or re-lock your bootloader.
In order to stay on 1908.12, you need files relevant to that version.
If you need your device certified in Playstore, clear data your Playstore, then open Magisk then check Safetynet. Do not open Playstore yet after you clear data. You should check Safetynet first.

2nd: Actually when I look at many guides. I don't know if I need to start on the first step or jump to any steps (because most guides start at converting your rom from ww to cn or cn to ww and I have no idea if difference in versions will cause problem, let's say the guide said, version 1907 cn to ww, but my current version is 1908 so it's kinda confusing) It'd be great if you can help me explain the right way to go.

If you don't update your phone to the latest version, your security patch will become outdated and vulnerable. Once you have changed the fingerprint to WW (should you choose to do so), the flagging of the updates is very simple and you don't lose data /apps etc each time, it's simply an update...

You are already on WW rom with CN fingerprint right? There are several ways to do this,
- you can stay on your version and change fingerprint there
(if you do this, start on the step where you change fingerprint)
Or
- flash first the RAW file of the version you want to go into.
(if you do this, start on the very first step)
One thing to remember is to download files relevant to what version you are now. If you are on 1908.12, download the rooted boot image and the stock boot image of 1908.12.
Your goal is to change fingerprint first.
You can always update your rom to the latest after you do that.

Do you need the rooted boot img for 1908.12? Are you going to change fingerprint with your current rom version?
Edit : here is the correct root boot img 1908.12 for your rom version should you choose to change fingerprint...

For now I plan to wait and see if I will receive any app+game updates. I think the seller just convert only the rom but don't know how to change the fingerprint. Thanks for the rom, so the rom above will be able to change fingerprint but will not be able to unroot and relock the bootloader (because it needs stock version) do I understand it correctly?

Yes you do, almost! It's not a rom but the root boot img for the rom version you have. But yeah, you're correct, you would need the stock boot img to unroot and re lock bootloader, which I don't have...

How to manual update to A10 & It will wipe my Data?

I just downloaded A10 firmware from Asus Website. I want to update but there was not any instruction on how to do that Please help me how to update. Also i want to know if update will wipe my internal data & Apps?
just put on internal storage then reboot your phone, your data is safe ?
It doesn't wipe but I would suggest to back it up anyway. I assume you have a tencent version?
Download the 2.5gb update, cut it and paste on your root folder (usually called internal storage). Reboot then it should prompt that there's updates available and just follow onscreen instructions..which is really just reboot after. This ONLY works if you have ww fw and ww fingerprint
This is what i did on mine coming from A9. Hope this helps. Again back up your data.

cant manual update too from .64 to latest android 10.someone,please help
Be sure you are on the latest Android 9 version (1910.64) before trying to manually update to Android 10. So if you're not on the latest Android 9 yet (check under Settings > System > Software information), first download the 1910.64 USER zip, put in your internal storage main folder, reboot the phone, upgrade when it prompts you, then reboot. Then download latest Android 10 USER zip and repeat the process.
If for some reason that does not work, you can try updating through fastboot. You have to use the RAW firmware zip file. Though this may wipe your phone; I have not tested, so not 100% sure.
Upgraded 2 times didn't wiped but always backup and if you ever want to use the downgrade 10 to 9 firmware it will wipe your data.
Update.

You have to move up in updates 1 step at a time. I was having the same problem. You have to update each update one at a time you can't skip any.

No dude, that's not entirely correct... If you only download the small incremental updates (about 180-300MB), then yes, you have to update one at a time because they are just small 'addons' if you like to update to the next rom version from the previous version.
However, if you download the full update zip (about 2.2GB) you can directly update from latest A9 1910.64 to latest A10 2004.60.... You can get it from here
https://dlcdnets.asus.com/pub/ASUS/..._I001_1-ASUS-17.0230.2004.60-1.1.162-user.zip
If that still fails for some reason then you'll have to update using the raw rom which can be found here
https://androidfilehost.com/?fid=4349826312261813058
Try the first link, download it, put it in the root of storage and reboot phone. It should automatically detect the update and prompt you to update. Post back here if that fails and I'll walk you through updating using the raw rom on the second link. Saves having to download and update a whole bunch of times like the other guy suggested just to get to the latest version. (no offence to Lonewolf, I appreciate you are simply trying to help, but just thought I'd clear that up ?)
Tried time and time again all from Asus website full zips around 2 gb wouldn't work until I went through them in order just finished. It would not update any other way I swear.

Oh OK dude. Thanks for letting us know and your help . Totally believe you, no need to swear on it! Strange though, I've advised several people to update straight from A9 1910.64 to latest A10 2004.60 using this method and everyone's reported back that all went well.
Were you initially updating from a version earlier than 1910.64?
If so then it would fail. 1910.64 was the last A9 update, you needed to be on that before it updates straight to latest A10 using the full zip.

Was coming from the WW_ZS660KL_16.0631.1910.64 from the convert from cn to ww thread which I believe is the raw. Been trying for a week or so to figure it out always said system update failed until I went through them one at a time.

Oh OK, fair enough. Glad you've got it updated now bud, which ever way works! ?
Ok, so I read through this, and it did not work.
I have the WW version, and matched it. I am currently still on 16.0631.1910.35_0. I placed the zipped 1910.64-1.1.253 upgrade on the internal storage, and nothing. Just assuming I am an idiot, I am going to try unzipping it so the payload.bin is no longer compressed and see if it works then. My bootloader is still unlocked and my tencent phone is not rooted. Please let me know what I am doing wrong.

Did you reboot after placing uncompressed zip to root of internal storage?
After reboot it should detect the update

Proper Updating Procedure

Hey All, was going through some threads regarding updating my phone and what not and realized that my phone is a few updates behind. I'm currently on WW-16.0631.1910.35. My phone doesn't auto-update for reasons I'm sure everyone here understands. So I'm curious, what's the best method of updating? Job I used to work for, we had a massive program and when it came to installing software, you had to install the program and then update it one update at a time. You couldn't just update to latest. So I'm curious, is this the same? Do I need to update one at a time? Or can I just download latest firmware (which I believe is WW-16.0631.1910.64) and all updates in between will be included?
Also, is WW-17...... Android 10?
And is it as simple as downloading, placing into root, and restarting?
Answered one of my questions
I looked at notes for WW-17 and yes, that is Android 10. I think I'll hold off on that until the bugs get figured out. Or does the community say it's safe to run with that?

1st download device info hw from playstore and under 'system' you will see the device fingerprint (not related to the actual fingerprint reader). You first need to check that this matches the WW rom you have.
If it doesn't match ie says CN, then you need to follow one of the guides in the guides section to change fingerprint to WW.
If fingerprint does match WW, then yes, you can go ahead and place 1910.64 in the root of storage, reboot and choose 'update' when prompted.
From there, you can go ahead and download latest stable A10 (.32) and update to that. Some people prefer the latest A10 stable (as do I), some say they prefer A9 for better battery hardcore gaming. I haven't noticed or had any issues with the latest update, and getting similar battery time. Others experience better on A9.
You choice! Good luck
No extracting Required?

How To Guide Updating the firmware (If it does not appear in the settings)

Updating from an update fileI have been seeing a lot of posts about people not receiving the OTA on their phone, and got tired of linking my instructions, so I decided to make a separate post
Download the version that you need from the Asus Zenfone 8 Support page (Note that if you are not on the latest Android 11 firmware (30.12.112.72), you will not be able to Android 12. So you need to do these steps with the latest Android 11, and then re-do them for the Android 12 firmware)
Plug in your phone to your computer, make sure the computer is trusted and that you can transfer files from the PC to the phone.
Move the zip file of the update in the base directory of the phone (The same directory as Alarms, Downloads, etc).
Wait for the transfer to finish, then you can unplug your phone if you want.
Reboot the phone
After the reboot, the phone will take a few seconds/minutes and will notify you that an update file was found, select the option to update the phone
It will then extract the update and install it all by itself, the normal update procedure starts from there

not work for me :/
I've spent a couple of hours yesterday to get this thing working. Basically, the Android 12 update will only update from specific image. I will try to describe the whole process below.
You have to do this process to upgrade all the way up to 30.12.112.7. If you have anything else, it won't work.
First, I've reverted back to stock, using
WW-ZS590KS-31.0803.0403.54-user_20210831-release.zip
... which contains the full flash scripts.
In my case, I had to do these delta upgrades manually (so copying the zip to root of sdcard memory).
UL-I006D-ASUS-30.12.112.56-1.1.31-user.zip
UL-I006D-ASUS-30.12.112.62-1.1.31-user.zip
UL-I006D-ASUS-30.12.112.72-1.1.31-user.zip
UL-I006D-ASUS-31.1004.0404.81-1.1.25-2111-user.zip
Number 4 is actual android 12 update. Hope this helps anyone.

I think that what is needed is to update to the latest firmware, then Android 12. So if you are already on Android 11, but not latest firmware, install it with the instructions, then do the same to update to Android 12's latest version.

What part does not work? Please be more specific and also, you should re-read the steps more carefully, in case you missed something
The android version I currently have is 30.12.112.72
I downloaded version 31.1004.0404.81 from the asus site to have android 12 on my zenfone 8.
I copied the folder without extracting it and put it in my phone's internal storage next to the other folders.
Once the copy was finished I restarted my phone so that it offered me the update but it did not offer it to me.
I do not understand why .

It also depends what prefix your installation has. See the first letters
UL-...
If you are from some other region, it could be that UL- is not a fitting upgrade option for you. As far as I can tell, it's not possible to tell which of the versions you have.
I give you the build number which is marked in the software information:
RKQ1.2021022.002.30.12.112.72
I have the right version or not suddenly?
Thank you for the quick tutorial. I was doing this via fastboot till now.
However: I upgraded to the latest firmware BEFORE Android 12. No issues.
Then I upgraded to the Android 12 firmware: stuck. Gave me some kind of ram dump, reboot returned me to the same error: bootloop. I was able to reboot and get to the bootloader. After selecting "recovery" it actually booted Android. And now for the weird part: it looks like I have a mix of Android 11 and Android 12 now! The phone is all but unusable for how slow it is. But the main UI looks like Android 11 still, but things like the reboot screen now look like Android 12. Bizarre...
I was at least able to enable ADB debug again, so I think I will be able to recover the phone. Still a weird issue though. Don't know if flashing with fastboot would have prevented it...
If anything fails, you can always try the Asus flash script it will solve most of the issues with your phone, just note that it installs Android 11 (30.11.51.115)
https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/full-recover-to-stock-if-things-went-really-bad.4337467/
EDIT: nvm, I saw your other reply, you alreay tried that. Were you able to get it working again?
Going from WW-30.12.112.82 to WW-31.1004.0404.107 worked flawlessly, i did not lose settings or data on that upgrade (but I want to stress that a good backup is STILL a very good thing to have!) It then started downloading the 31.1010.0410.43 upgrade on its own. (shown in the ui as SKQ1.210821.001.31.1010.0410.43)
Why didn't I upgrade to the latest one myself? Simple: I goofed up and downloaded the older one.
change the name in UL-ASUS_I006D-ASUS-99.1004.0404.82-1.1.31-9999-user.zip
Hi, has anyone tried to upgrade a firmware that has Magisk and TWRP installed? Today Android 13 has been released for the Zenfone 8, but I wouldn't really like to do something really dumb such as upgrading, rebooting to recovery to reinstall Magisk only to discover that TWRP has been replaced by the stock recovery and the phone completely erases any data it has stored.
You can update by putting the fw in sdcard folder, while keeping magisk (you need to restore images before updating and reinstalling magisk in the inactive slot after updating, then reboot). Otherwise, you can just update through system or through twrp, and after that, boot/flash twrp and install magisk again. In both ways you won't lose any data

Thank you! As this is my first phone with A/B slots, I wasn't completely sure about how to proceed. I'll follow your instructions! The only thing I don't get is where is TWRP stored and why it won't be overwritten by the update.
EDIT: installed successfully, thanks!
