Question regarding convert CN WW fingerprint (Newbie) - ASUS ROG Phone II Questions & Answers

Hello everyone,
I just got my phone today. The unit came with global rom but after checked with hw, on the fingerprint section it's still cn and after checking in Play store, it said 'devie is not certified'. I'm a little bit afraid that I won't receive any update on Play store (games) so I decide to change it.
After reading many posts and guides here in xda, still confused so I got some questions to ask.
1. Do I need to install the global rom on my phone again (as I see many guides start with upgrading their rom)
2. What version do I need to download and where can I find the safe software version.
3. If you give me a guide link please tell me if I need to skip which step or follow every steps.
4. Is it possible if I want to stay at 1908.12? (with the current firmware but ww fingerprint, instead of the latest version)
Edit: What's the reason for changing fingerprint version? If I just want to update games+apps or receive apps update, Safely. Do I need to care changing the fingerprint version? What I'm afraid are 1. I don't receive any app+game update. 2. It's not safe even though updating through legit play store.
My current rom: PKQ1.190414.001.WW_Phone-16.0631.1908.12
HW: asus/CN_I001D/ASUS_I001_1:9/PKQ1.190414.001/16.0631.1908.12-0:user/release-keys
Ps: I don't know how to attach screenshots. I can only see image icon but it just ask me to paste a url.
Thank you for your help.

1. You don't need to install again.
2. Always download the latest possible rom you can find. Just remember that there are two kinds of rom you can download, one is the "RAW" rom, and the other is the rom you find on official Asus site.
3. There's a very straightforward guide in Guides section, read it.
4. It is possible to stay where you are now.
Now to help you understand the process,
1st: you need to root your phone if currently not rooted. And to root your phone you need to unlock your bootloader first. And to unlock your bootloader you need the official unlocking tool found at the Asus website.
2nd: after rooting, you should follow the step where you change your fingerprint from CN to WW. Read at Guides Section. You need to do this in order to fully make your rom WW.
3rd: after you changed your fingerprint, you have two choices, stay rooted or re-lock your bootloader.
In order to stay on 1908.12, you need files relevant to that version.
If you need your device certified in Playstore, clear data your Playstore, then open Magisk then check Safetynet. Do not open Playstore yet after you clear data. You should check Safetynet first.

2. Do you mean, in order to change fingerprint, I need to download the latest software version, is that right?
4. Actually my question is will there be any downside if I don't change my fingerprint? Sorry and please bare with me.
2nd: Actually when I look at many guides. I don't know if I need to start on the first step or jump to any steps (because most guides start at converting your rom from ww to cn or cn to ww and I have no idea if difference in versions will cause problem, let's say the guide said, version 1907 cn to ww, but my current version is 1908 so it's kinda confusing) It'd be great if you can help me explain the right way to go.
Thanks for your respond.

If you don't update your phone to the latest version, your security patch will become outdated and vulnerable. Once you have changed the fingerprint to WW (should you choose to do so), the flagging of the updates is very simple and you don't lose data /apps etc each time, it's simply an update...

This is my guide to update to latest current version (1910.35), change fingerprint to WW etc. Yes, you must follow each step starting from 0 as the root boot img must be the same as the rom on your device, so you need to flash the raw rom 1st...

You are already on WW rom with CN fingerprint right? There are several ways to do this,
- you can stay on your version and change fingerprint there
(if you do this, start on the step where you change fingerprint)
Or
- flash first the RAW file of the version you want to go into.
(if you do this, start on the very first step)
One thing to remember is to download files relevant to what version you are now. If you are on 1908.12, download the rooted boot image and the stock boot image of 1908.12.
Your goal is to change fingerprint first.
You can always update your rom to the latest after you do that.

Do you need the rooted boot img for 1908.12? Are you going to change fingerprint with your current rom version?
Edit : here is the correct root boot img 1908.12 for your rom version should you choose to change fingerprint...
https://mega.nz/#!H3ZCTIZZ!RvuO711iSSExHQAUUCPLL_Zqk1EOq4JgqTMD4MLDHJ4
Please note, I do not have the stock boot img for your rom version, so you won't be able to unroot and relock bootloader... If that's what you're hoping to do

For now I plan to wait and see if I will receive any app+game updates. I think the seller just convert only the rom but don't know how to change the fingerprint. Thanks for the rom, so the rom above will be able to change fingerprint but will not be able to unroot and relock the bootloader (because it needs stock version) do I understand it correctly?

Yes you do, almost! It's not a rom but the root boot img for the rom version you have. But yeah, you're correct, you would need the stock boot img to unroot and re lock bootloader, which I don't have...

will an unlocked bootloader cause updates to fail? any help would be appreciated.

Hi All,
I hope I am asking in the right area and forgive me if I havent.
I have a Mi Mix 128gb running Niui Global 8.0 Stable 8.0.7.0.0 MAHCNDI which I believe is a vendor rom? I try to go into updates as I see on the MIUI website there is a version 8.0.10.0. and I would like to update to that.
-I tried the update button where it takes a few seconds saying checking and comes back with no updates available.
-I then tried the choose update package in the update app and chose the rom I moved onto the phone (not in a folder as specified) and it says getting info and then comes back 'couldnt verify update package'.
-I then tried the reboot to recovery mode and named the rom 'update.zip' as specified and all I got when I tried to enter reboot to recovery mode from the actual update app was a black screen wth a phone and a cord plugged in and a website address, no graphical selection tool where I was able to select using volume up and down etc.
I had read somewhere it could be due to the fact that when the vendor flashed the global rom they may have left the bootloader unlocked and that is why the phone isnt finding the update or running it from the file on the phone.
Does this make any sense or am I just missing everything and doing something wrong?
If it is the unlocked can I lock it again to so that I am able to update.
I did try the other thread on verifying the bootloader and how to type in the command to relock it but I wasnt able to use the ADB as I am not all together familiar on how to use it.
If anyone out there can give me a hand I would be forever grateful and I would ask that if you can help that it be as detailed as possible as I need all the help I can get
Thanks so much in advance
Dis you get your Mi Mix from a vendor who loaded Gapps for you? I think that 8.0.7.0.0 is a vendor ROM, not the CN Stable or EU Stable ROM.
I suggest you find the ROM guideline thread here and update to the CN or EU Stable ROM
Best

It is definitely a vendor rom. To begin with, this phone has no Official Global rom yet. It states it is a global rom but in the Rom name it contains the letter CN, which identifies the rom as the chinese rom. Therefor yes, it is a vendor rom.
I don't have the phone yet so take my advice with a grain of salt, but i'm pretty sure that an unlocked bootloader does not interfere with installing roms/getting ota updates etc. Sorry, with an unlocked bootloader you can't get OTA updates. But you've got a vendor rom so you wouldn't be able to get one in the first place even with a locked bootloader.
I think that if your bootloader is really unlocked, the fastest and easiest way to flash the newest rom would be by using the MiFlash program from Xiaomi. Here's a guide for that:
http://en.miui.com/thread-307744-1-1.html
(Method 3, Step 2)
Let me know if you managed to flash it.

If by "google movies" you're referring to movies downloaded from google play, then make sure you disable download manager in the Miui appstore settings. It connects to a chinese proxy and therefor is buggy and really slow.
Thanks to everyone on this forum as I now have a EU rom running on my mix and everything is working. I can download and watch movies from Google Play, I can watch and download Netflix and Google Contacts (the app not sync) now installs and works. Now this is the phone I wanted it to be and I am thrilled.

Just follow the directions here

And you shouldn't have any issues.
Did your phone come with the Global 8.0 Stable 8.0.7.0.0 MAHCNDI s that is what mine started with and the only issue was that I had to use the ADL mode to get the phone to recognize and take the TWRP so I could get the EU rom working. Been using it for a few days now and no issues whatsoever. Good luck!

TWRP, Root, CN vs EU...Confusion!

OK, I need some clarification please. I just ordered the phone on Swappa and will have it soon but I would like to have a plan in place for reaching my goal...A rooted phone with TWRP (don't know about what ROM yet)
I'm not sure what software will be on this phone when I get it (EU or Chinese stock/dev) but does that make a difference when attempting to put TWRP on the phone? Also, are there still 2 separate versions or is there just one now?
Also in regards to the initial root and TWRP procedure is it not possible to have SU zip on your phone beforehand or does it have to be transferred from your computer while in TWRP? Finally, the verity no opt encrypt zip must be flashed regardless of whether you are rooting or not? Many thanks for any and all help!

Presently if you read max of the posts in major of the forums, you will find out there are three versions of ROM majorly (removing Chinese dev from the list as many don't seem to be on this) - If you are buying the phone from a reseller and not directly from xiaomi, mostly you will end up with Vendor ROM
1) Vendor ROM global (8.08.0 something version) which comes with very less bloatware and Google play services. Sometimes people said their bootloader was unlocked and for some its not. (mine was locked, so had to apply for unlock - It took 3 days to get the approval).
PLEASE NOTE THAT MANY TIMES THIS VENDOR ROM HAS A "NOTES APP" WITH TROJAN ON IT. MALWARE BYTES DETECTS THIS. HENCE I DECIDED TO GET OFF IT.
2) Chinese stable ROM - The official miui ROM. It has OTA updates but comes with bloatware and quite cumbersome to use for a non Chinese person like me or thats what I felt. If you really want to use Chinese stable (and still need google apps) there is a guide which is available some where in one of the forums, right now can't get hold of it somehow.
3) EU ROM (weekly updates - I believe to be done manually) - This one is so far the best I have used and very less bloatware (there is "Qunar travel" and one Chinese app that came with it. I simply uninstalled them blindly). Comes with google play services and you can download the rest from google store.
My journey so far is Vendor ROM --> Chinese Stable --> EU ROM (Non-root)
Why i didn't go directly from Vendor ROM to EU ROM is because
1) some of the users had issues with TWRP's touch non-responsiveness.
2) I want to see what is there on Chinese Stable before going to EU ROM, so that I can do a comparison.
For Vendor ROM to Chinese Stable use the guide below (by @satishp)
https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-mix/how-to/kindly-help-flashing-to-china-stable-t3528652
For Chinese Stable (or if you want to try from Vendor ROM directly to EU ROM) to EU ROM use the guide below (by @underlines)
https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-mix/how-to/guide-flash-global-china-rom-root-gapps-t3510592
Following the steps exactly in the above two guides, I was able to install EU ROM without any issues.

When you enable developer options on your phone and enable USB debugging, then I believe when you connect your phone to laptop/desktop it should connect using MTP and should be seen as device. So I guess you can copy the zip before hand on to the phone.

All the guides mention that whenever you want to install the EU ROM without root, the dm-verity is compulsory to flash before reboot.
Hope this helps!!. Enjoy your MIX.

Wow, thank you so much for that very thorough answer! I will be getting the phone tomorrow and my goal will be to get the EU Rom on my phone with TWRP and Xposed.
One more small question. So if I happen to get the touch screen freeze (in TWRP or after system reboot) how do you recover from this situation?

I believe you have to go to Chinese Stable then using MiFlash or install one more version of TWRP which is compatible with Chinese ROM and then other steps. (one of the guides mentions these too)
But my suggestion is simply follow the steps in both the guides, go to chinese stable and then to EU ROM. Its worth the 15 min extra effort as surely i can tell this will not have problems and I believe you can definitely got to root/xposed too finally.
There is a small typo in my previous answer (I corrected it now). Sincere apologies for the same.
Dm-verity is not needed if you are going to root. If you flash to EU ROM and don't want root, then install dm-verity. This is as per the guide mentioned in my last answer.
Hope this helps.

Proper Updating Procedure

Hey All, was going through some threads regarding updating my phone and what not and realized that my phone is a few updates behind. I'm currently on WW-16.0631.1910.35. My phone doesn't auto-update for reasons I'm sure everyone here understands. So I'm curious, what's the best method of updating? Job I used to work for, we had a massive program and when it came to installing software, you had to install the program and then update it one update at a time. You couldn't just update to latest. So I'm curious, is this the same? Do I need to update one at a time? Or can I just download latest firmware (which I believe is WW-16.0631.1910.64) and all updates in between will be included?
Also, is WW-17...... Android 10?
And is it as simple as downloading, placing into root, and restarting?
Answered one of my questions
I looked at notes for WW-17 and yes, that is Android 10. I think I'll hold off on that until the bugs get figured out. Or does the community say it's safe to run with that?

1st download device info hw from playstore and under 'system' you will see the device fingerprint (not related to the actual fingerprint reader). You first need to check that this matches the WW rom you have.
If it doesn't match ie says CN, then you need to follow one of the guides in the guides section to change fingerprint to WW.
If fingerprint does match WW, then yes, you can go ahead and place 1910.64 in the root of storage, reboot and choose 'update' when prompted.
From there, you can go ahead and download latest stable A10 (.32) and update to that. Some people prefer the latest A10 stable (as do I), some say they prefer A9 for better battery hardcore gaming. I haven't noticed or had any issues with the latest update, and getting similar battery time. Others experience better on A9.
You choice! Good luck
No extracting Required?

Updating Firmware on a Rooted Phone with TWRP

Hello
I have an ROG Phone 2 12/512 which should be a WW version (I'm not sure, can someone tell me how to check)
When I bought the phone the place I bought it from rooted then did something for the IMEI registration (In Turkey importing a phone and registering is 300€ almost)
I asked them to leave it rooted since I always used my last phone rooted (Galaxy S7)
The phone is currently on Android 9, 5 July 2019 Security patch
What I want to do is update my firmware and then if necessary root my phone again
I'm pretty used to the Samsung environment and am used to using Odin
This Asus phone is pretty new to me and I don't know the tools and the things I should be aware of
Can someone give me a head start on what I should use and what I should do to update my phone with the stock firmware.
The sticker on the back of the phone says ASUS 1001DC and there is no tencent logo as far as I can see that is why I believe it is a WW version
Edit 1: Also whenever I reboot my device there is an Unlocked Bootloader Warning
Thank you

Thank you

You can use 'device info hw' from playstore to check your fingerprint. Under 'system' it'll say if you're on WW rom and also that your device fingerprint matches - needs to also be WW to update, not CN.
That app will also tell you the exact rom version you are running. Now, if you're a hardcore gamer, it might be best to update to latest A9 and stay with that for the time being. Some users report that it's best for gaming. Provided your fingerprint matches your rom, you can go ahead and download the latest A9 update which is 1910.64 and can be found in the guides section. Be sure to download the full rom zip and place it in the root of internal storage. Reboot and choose to install the update when prompted. Provided the update reaches 100% without fail, DON'T choose reboot now, select reboot later. Go to magisk manager, choose install magisk, then choose install magisk after ota. That'll give you root again (if that is what you want). Then reboot. That'll put you on the latest A9 rom.
However, the update may fail as you have a magisk-patched boot img. If it does report back here
If you want the latest A10, then repeat the same process after downloading latest A10 which ends with 2002.32, which can also be found in the guides section.
Good luck

Hello;
I could only do it today, was a bit busy
I tried A9 update and it was successful.
Thank you for your help.
Made it very easy for me.
I read up on the A10 update and although I'm not a phone gamer much the comments weren't that good on the update.
I will wait for the next one and depending on the comments will update to it.
Thanks again

(Guide) How to dump your ROM Without PC

Hi guys, as We know, BS3 don't have stable global rom yet for chinese version. If have some good soul here, please follow this tutorial and upload your global rom stable for communnity.
The step is very easy, fallow this guide to unlock and flash twrp: https://forum.xda-developers.com/bl...ckshark-3-3-pro-3s-unlock-bootloader-t4141537
After unlock and flash twrp, make sure to logout your Mi Account.
Go to TWRP> backup > select all box (don't select data user and EFS) wait the proccess finish. After finish, go to PC plug the device, copy your twrp folder to your pc, compact it with winrar and upload it. Share with us.
With this way we can get legit global rom for BS3 (normal version).

Maybe no one will do because they could be afraid of getting bricked or afraid of not receiving ota updates anymore. If only bs team will share it (and not sell), we won't have this problem. Now I hope they fail spectacularly on the next update or in JoyUI12 so they wont have a choice but to release full rom over ota. Imagine that.
the method is very easy ;-; , sad
I would love to dump my rom, but the thing is, this TWRP recovery won't guarantee the safety of my device. I just bought this and I check the link and the files that were put in there, I'm not sure if I should risk flashing a modified TWRP created by an unknown dev, I also would not risk flashing a Chinese TWRP recovery not knowing the compatibility of Global devices to CN ones. You're right, it is easy as point click and type commands, but the risk is high also and bricking the phone is too easy too. I hope Blackshark really opens up on devs like what Asus is doing on their ROG3. This would make their device a lot more famous, allowing developers collaborate with each other. If I can't figure out a safe way to root and install custom recovery at least in the next few months, I might sell this device, too bad this has serious hardware that can rival flagships but, it's a deal breaker for us not to have custom recovery backups and rooting too. Ecosystem is too restrictive. I dunno what these chinese folks were thinking when they made this device.

don't have error. If you would want revert back for stock recovery, just lock your bootloader again and it will revert back for original system.

Yours is a CN Model. Mine isn't, this is Global already. I haven't studied the phone differences yet so I can't comment too much, I'll have to check how to get stock images to revert to original system. There's no known downloadable image right?

There's none. But you have it on your phone. And if you know how, maybe you can pull it.
