Hi, this is my first post. I hope it is ok. I know this subforum is for the 7" version, but the only 8.9" subforum is restricted to established members and is for developers only, and i am not either.
I am in the UK, and my brother in the US bought me this for christmas. Thing is, the 8.9" version is not available in the UK. I knew that, which is why i asked Amazon before purchase if it would work.
They said no, but yes. Basically, not out of the box, but i could install the lovefilms app (which is the video service offered by Amazon in the UK) manually, and it would work.
Now i have it though there are two problems.
1. the App Store is pointing to the US store, and so the selection is US focused and in US dollars. I havent tried buying anything but my guess is that may fail to download as i am not in the correct region. The lovefilms app is not available on the US store.
2. without the Lovefilms app i can use the lovefilms account i just got for chistmas!
What a pain. Amazon said sorry basically, and that i could try sending it back to the US for a refund if i wanted. Hardly an acceptable solution given it was their fault.
So i am now looking into if there is anyway to get the UK app store on the device? I heard that the OS is the same, so shouldnt it be possible? If it is possible, then how do i do it, and would it void my warranty (though i may not have much choice even if it does)?
Thanks
On Amazon and Best Buy, the Chromecast is going to be $29.99 this Black Friday.

Only $5 difference, but seriously the cheapest streamer just got cheaper.

Oh thats what I meant originally
Yup... If you care about rooting now, time to check your local store for rootable stock before they get cleared out!
staples has them with the 20% off coupon right now. that makes is $28, and you can do it now.
you wont find a rootable since they got them this week though.
(Voice of Lee Corso from ESPN): "Not so fast, my friend!!"
I don't know if that's necessarily true that they FOR SURE won't be rootable. I'm saying this because there are still people that are ordering units off of Amazon.com & picking up units at local Best Buy stores that have been able to achieve root. Maybe, just mayyybbbeee you're right..who knows? Maybe these newly purchased Chromecasts are being pulled off the shelf from the verryyy back of the allotment, maybe these Chromecasts aren't all being manufactured at the same facility(maybe there are multiple production locations & they're not all flashing identical firmware?)..who really knows?
Maybe I'm completely mistaken in thinking this, but I'm starting to think that we're not gonna be able to identify rootable Chromecasts by their serial number. In a couple of threads here on xda, we have been trying to come up with some kind of pattern that we can use to spot a rootable Chromecast, but it looks like there are some gaps in the pattern, thus not being able to properly spot an exploitable device. Maybe I'm wrong...this is just my opinion. =)

I'd say the Rootable serial numbers thread disagrees so far, save for the lone verified report that defies the rule.
Many folks make the mistake of setting up and using their Chromecast before trying to root them and they get auto-updated to a non-rootable firmware. So an exploitable/rootable Chromecast really equates to one that has never been connected to the Internet and has shipped from the factory with an exploitable firmware version (12072). Hmm... I should point that out in the thread. Thanks for making me think of this!
Just read an article that stated the Chromecast will be on sale today "only" for $29.98 at Walmart. Don't know if that's the truth or is that they are starting Black Friday sales today??

walmart has them on sale check the website, however theres no mention of the $6 google play promotion, also for anyone worried about staples not being rootable, you can always price match at big stores like best buy or frys. I found a supposedly rootable one yesterday but don't have a usb otg so not sure what to do yet.

I see that now but not yesterday, it's "online", store pickup or delivered and today is Thanksgiving as the article stated. We'll see what it shows tomorrow.
It appears that the article was correct. Late yesterday, online was sold out at the lower price, today it's available online but for $35 again.

If you want to root, it must not connect to the Internet, which pretty much means you can't use it until you get a USB OTG or another way to get power+MicroUSB male+USB A female, root with FlashCast and flash a rooted, non-updating firmware like PwnedCast.

The Chromecast isn't in their flyer. I was going to stop at Walmart on my way back from a family dinner today but the parking lot was scary full. Should have left earlier as it was empty then!
Chromecast $25 + tax
Go here: http://m.staples.com/
Top of the page is this: Save $10 off $30 via text now
Enter mobile number and receive the coupon.
Add chromecast to cart: http://m.staples.com/touch/product.html#397061
Checkout!
For $29.99, with free standard shipping, and $6 of Google Play promotional credit (for movie rentals), Amazon is making the Chromecast a rather tempting offer. :good:
Powned Chromecast
I just bought a chromecast and was able to root it with powned rom. I am not see it as being very useful in my home. Is there a way to put the original rom back so I can sell it?

You might actually get more for it in it's rooted state since some are having a hard time finding one with a rootable serial Number.
It appears from personal experience and others experience that a downgrade from FireOS 5.3.2.1 to 5.3.1 is currently impossible and will result in a HARD BRICK.
R.I.P My sister's and countless other tablets.

Yes - as been documented elsewhere in this forum in multiple threads. Always check before downgrading as bricks are a common outcome with Amazon devices. Only certain versions can be rolled back to specific levels. 5.3.2.1 is not one of them (source or target). Sorry for your loss.
If the device is still within warranty contact Amazon for courtesy exchange.

Although it was entirely her fault for not letting me root earlier, I am buying her a new one... Hopefully this one is running 5.3.1.0

Also consider a refurbished device from Amazon Warehouse. Aside from packaging indistinguishable from new and typically arrives with older firmware. Price is nice too.

To me it appears that a new one from Best Buy is the same price. (I have a few hundred in Best Buy gift cards)

Best Buy typically matches Amazon's promotional pricing, plus local returns. Same models as found online.
Is there anyway to root or downgrade this so i can install a ROM any ideas? because otherwise, it's just a piece of junk that is annoying me.
Negative on root and not for the foreseeable future. I actually just sold mine the other day. $30. I bought it for $20 used, put a tempered glass protector and a case on it. All in all, if you got a decent deal on it (or if you still have the box) you can get pretty much all your money back selling second hand.

Yep - easily sold an unrooted 5th gen on CL. Still have a pair of boxed 5th gens with 5.0.1 bootloader that I might unload before the batteries go bad. While Fire 7s are quite serviceable (especially with one of @ggow's custom ROMs) I prefer the crispness/responsiveness of higher resolution screens on devices with at least 2GB of memory. Several options in the $50 USD range satisfy that criteria. Still use my remaining Fire 7 on occation; has never let me down.

I am partial to (used) 3rd gen Amazon HDX devices. Bootloader can be unlocked opening the door to a full suite of custom ROMs. Hardware is far superior to anything in the current Fire line-up.

Any current hardware you would recommend with stock android? I see quite a few other tablets in the $50 range now. . .and all three of my boys have destroyed their tablets in the two years they have had them (one fell off a car, another cracked in a backpack, and the other got stepped on). Two are still in use with screen protectors, but they should get replacements. . .but without root, not really interested in the Amazon devices anymore. . .

Sounds like your boys are tough on electronics. In that case a HDX would not be a good choice. You might be better off going with a prepaid handset such as the Motorola G4 which can be had for <$40 at Walmart. Don't activate; just use as WiFi gizmo. Better technical specs than any 5-7th gen Amazon tablet. No root - but really isn't needed w/Android 7.1.

Hm. Thanks. So 5.5" screen instead of 7" it appears. . .not sure lack of root is an option to lock down with Kidsplace properly.

Sorry - it is the E4 which is a slightly better device than the G4. You can compare specs online. Following link valid in the US as of the date of this post. Perpetually 'out of stock' online but usually available in stores. There is no further up-front commitment if not using cellular service (not does it matter if Verizon is available in your area). Note I'm not pumping this device; just offering it up as an example of what's available per my original post. May or may not meet your needs.

Other then Huawei's own Vmall webpage
https://m.vmall.com/product/ord-2601010166801.html
I don't see it for sale anywhere else, I see a lot of pre orders that's about it. It was on eBay for a short time for a little over $3,000 I haven't seen any new listings since then.
Reminds me of trying to buy the Mi Mix. On sale for a few minutes, once a week.. Meh.
And holy batman that price. [emoji50]
But it's ooooh so tempting
