Hello All,
The root landscape has changed over the years and getting back into rooting, I am curious. What root apps are you all using? Of course there are the main ones: Magisk, Kernel Manager, Ect... Would love to see what else is out there.
Thanks
I guess I'll just list what my Magisk Superuser section says I've granted SU access to...
AdAway, AFWall+, AutoInput, Battery Charge Limit, BBS (Better Battery Stats), Button Mapper, Cool Tool,
EdXposed Manager(Burnt Toast Revived, CameraNotify, DisableFlagSecure, FingerFace, GravityBox [Q], MaxLock, XPrivacyLua),
EX Kernel Manager, File Timestamp, Kinetic Scroll, Logcat Extreme, MiXplorer, Network Log, Preferences Manager, substratum, Tasker, Termux, Titanium Backup, ViPER4Android FX
That's it for me at the moment...
My root apps are:
1. AdAway (blocking of ads and trackers on dns "layer")
2. AfWall+ (restrict internet access)
3. Titanium Backup (as data backups)
4. Terminal Emulator (for deactivate the captive Portal Check).
5. Warden (deactivates tracker directly in apps)
I use terminal emulator to allow unlimited hotspot on my Cricket plan and Adway. I keep things simple now.

how'd you get that titanium to work?

Not sure what you mean? TiBu works just fine. I use it for all my user and non-Store apps and it restores them perfectly. It is part of my regular backup routine.
For the list:
Adaway, EX Kernel Manager, LTE Discovery, LP, Quick Reboot Pro, Root Explorer, Solid Explorer, Titanium Backup

I'll second that. I've had very good experiences with TiBu for over a decade. Lol
In both this and the Taimen (assuming it's more about Android version instead of hardware) the only snag I hit is a few apps hang if you try to restore data and a couple others are just a no go. Sometimes it just takes installing the app first the restoring the data to get around it.
Waze is one that comes to mind. If I think of others I'll edit this.
Anyway, I probably restore upwards of 100 apps whenever I do a fresh install and don't really find too much aggravation...

I'm on the stock N1 and want to unlock the bootloader, which will force a wipe.
Whilst I can backup the installed apps to .apks on the sdcard with several apps as far as I know when they are restored they will not be 'linked' to the market, so I won't get update notifications for them.
'backup for root users' and 'titanium backup' can back up the market db, but you need to be root in the first place, which N1 users cannot be.
Is there a way to backup the market db without root?
Or maybe 'fix' the market data during/after the reinstall of the .apks?
Back them up to the sd. When you root reinstall and use atrackdog to check for any updates. If you do update the app in the market then it will show from that point on through the markets update notification.
Or... You can download Titanium Backup from market
EDIT... Sorry, it says you need root for it... I coulda sworn it didnt say that before...
both mybackup pro and app manager can backup aps to sd card without root.. then you can use thm to restore after rooting.

He is 100% correct about this but if you look for app manager it is now call app monster. The pro or free versions will work.
@lgkahn and @jerrycycle
Thanks guys, but I'm sure I used MyBackup to do this ages ago with my G1. It restored the apps OK but they didn't show up as 'installed' in the Market so Market doesn't give you updates.
I notice MyBackup now has a 'root' section in the preferences which includes a 'Market db' option. The only other apps I've seen that can do it require root so it looks like maybe it can't be done :-/
Failing that I'm now looking for the restore solution with the least clicks, then jerrycycle's idea of ATrackDog (thanks!). AppMonster doesn't have a batch install, App Manager (by Amazing Droid) does and pops up the usual install dialog so thats 2 clicks per app.
AppBrain looks cool, you can make a backup list of your apps on the web, then resync after wipe, but it does a market search for each one which is quite a lot of clicks It does note protected apps though, which the others can't dump so I'd loose track of them.
hmmm not going well. Market shows all apps I had installed but as 'free', it thinks they're available to install. If I install the app from SD - I've tried MyBackup, Astro and AppManager - it is available in the launcher but still listed as 'free' in the market.
Looks like only way to do it is to go down the list in Market and manually install each from there.
Alright, you all are amazing. I have a nootered nookcolor running launcherpro, and all of your help has been so appreciated. I am now at a wall. I did not use super or autonooter so I am comfortable in terminal. I have a few apps I bought and want to install to my nook.
I used titanium backup, and no matter what I do, it seems I need market to get them to work properly on my Nook.
I have tried:
adb (and throwing them into the system/app folder)
titanium backup (I installed SU titanium and busybox)
and root explorer.
The apps are...
Docs to go (full version key) says key is outdated
Gottodo (says it is not licensed)
sketchbook mobile (please ensure you are connected to a network and try again:Error code:UNKOWN) I am.
I am trying to keep my install as lightweight as possible so I avoided autonooter, but I may have to actually install the market. Arggghh
So, after all this help, does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks.

If you follow the threads, you'll be able to get market running, etc (try supernooter) once thats done u can reinstall your purchased apps.
The problem is your not enabled correctly for market. Look for an app called MarketAccess. It'll fix your market and you can just downlaad your purchased apps.

Hi.
I own a BQ X5 Plus with android 7.1.1 rooted with Magisk v16. The problem is that when making a backup of the user or system applications with Titanium Backup Pro 8.1 the phone restarts. I have tried several versions of Titanium and the same thing happens. This did not happen to me before using SuperSU. Is there any incompatibility between Magisk and Titanium?
Any application like Titanium to make and restore applications and configurations?
Thank you
Please provide specific information and logs w/ exact date and time of restart. If you have used the device since the issue, clear your logs and repeat the process that triggers the reboot problem with Titanium. I am running Magisk 16.3 + Manager 5.70 with Titanium Backup and have no issues.
You may wish to contact the Titanium developers and ascertain what logs they require to also investigate the issue.
There are ample alternatives to Titanium backup (that backup system apps, backup app data, freeze apps, etc). Search: backup app data (maybe?)

Hi. I'm pretty new to these issues. If you tell me how to do a log, I'll send it to you.
I have contacted the people of Titanium, I am waiting for your response.
On the other hand I would appreciate it if you were more precise about the use of other backup applications. Some in particular that allows to make backup of apk / data / configurations like titanium. Thank you.

You can try AppVault from JMZ software...
It REQUIRES BusyBox... Without it you won't get app data... So you'll need either osm0sis's BusyBox for magisk or stericsons BusyBox installer... Or be on LOS...
Thank you. I tell you what I have done, I think I have it solved.
1- Install AppVault, but I did not like it very much. Very far from Titanium.
2- Remove Magisk and put SuperSU. I made a backup and same problem, restarts ..... that means that the problem is Titanium. It's weird since I used SuperSU + Titanium months ago and had no problems.
3- This morning I decided to modify two parameters in Titanium:
Menu / preferences / compression level: I have put it in LZO, before I was in GZIP
Menu / preferences / advanced application control: I have deactivated it, I think this was the problem.
Now I can try returning to the level of compression that I had before and eliminating SuperSU and putting Magisk.
I'll tell you if it works.
Thank you all.
Hi.
SOLVED. I have reinstalled Magisk and with the changes I made in titanium it works perfect.
I've installed Magisk (latest version) on a brand new phone (Samsung Galaxy J4). It is just out of the box. All apps that need root are granted access. Also Titanium Backup! BUT when I start TB I get the error: Sorry, I could not acquire root privileges...
I'm lost here what to do to get TB running. Any help please?

Yes. It is granted root privileges in superuser.
Are you using the version from the play store or a pirated pro version

That I'm not sure of. I downloaded from here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk/official-magisk-v7-universal-systemless-t3473445
IF you refer to TB it's legal from Playstore.

Give all rights to TB. Go to the settings of TB. Diagnostics settings. Check (System BusyBox) Restart TB. And TB will see the root!

Worked like a charm!! Many Thanks :victory:
Here is the improved version:
1. Select "Menu" on top right corner of Titanium Backup
2. In "General" catagory, select "Preferences"
3. In next menu, select "Troubleshooting settings"
4. Now select "Force System Busybox"
When you exit the menu, the titanium backup will start itself.

Hi,
I have the same problem with Titanium. When I start it, than I see for a short moment a little message that TB got root.
I think this message is from Magisk. But then follows a message screen from TB that it didn't get root.
In Magisk root is enabled for TB!
Rootchecker says that I have root. Other apps have root too. Only TB does not recognize the rooting.
Which informations do you need for help? Phone is Samsung J6+ with Android 8.1.0 ans Magisk 18.1
No Root with Titanium und Link2SD
Hi,
I have the same problem with Titanium and Link2SD. Both programms get root-rights from Magisk. Both are in the list of enabled apps. But these programms don't accept the root. First I thougt that this is a problem of Titanium. But now I think the problemmaker is Magisk. Magist gives "root", but not full correct. like SU does. Some programms accept it, some not.
Or just use Migrate, for app backups its far less buggy than horrible Titanium Backup
Got rid of that POS years ago after the dozenth time it failed to restore stuff, moved to MyBackup Pro and never looked back
But lately been using Migrate for a member here on XDA, solid work, cant rate it highly enough, and its Free: https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/app-migrate-custom-rom-migration-tool-t3862763
Its what i advise people to use.....

No help? Ok - I gave up. Titanium Backup, Link2Sd and Magisk are not working properly together. I completely reset my phone and updated it to Android 9 (PIE). My first attempt with Magisk "bricked" my J6 after a few weeks. during a update of Magisk. And the new attempt with my new J6 + does not work properly. I'll wait a few months and hope that eventually there will be a working root solution for Galaxy J6+ with Android 9.
Hello friends, I have found the solution for me. Galaxy Tab-A with android 9 and MTK-6753 with android 10 + Magisk-v21.4 + Magisk_Manager_8.0.7 + Titanium Backup-Pro-v8.3.3.
The problem is neither Magisk nor Titanium, but Busybox: there are several versions of Busybox. Titanium cannot acquire root rights with busybox-for-android, neither free busybox nor busybox-installer-arm.bin or other versions. But it works fine with com.jrummy.busybox.installer.apk or stericson.busybox.apk (you may need to test both). So: open your busybox, uninstall it, reinstall another version, and test with Titanium Backup.
Good luck.

No, you need root. No other app has more permissions than you as normal user.
But if helium can do it by debugging mode its posible no root
Must be other apps capable then no?

Debugging mode is not the same as root permissions on your device. With debugging mode you are logged in (shell) as user_shell and with root you are user_root. The user_shell doesn't have the permissions to read the app specific directories in /data/data/PACKAGES to do a backup of all your apps. Only user_root, user_system and apps themselves (only for own directory, but others not) can access these directories r/w and read all the data within.
Exception: An ADB backup is able to backup app data of those apps, that are included in the Google Backup ('device settings > System > Backup' or open settings > searchbar > 'backup').
