Hey guys, I've had my mi 8 for a year now and got bored of miui so I wanted to try something aosp like on it. I proceeded to unlocking the BL, downloading ROMs and gapps. The problem is...gapps don't get installed whenever I go into twrp and flash them it's like they don't exist even though the prompt on twrp says everything's fine. Am I doing something wrong? I would really like some guidance on which rom to choose first and then which steps to follow so I can resolve this issue.

Okay so the title is pretty much self explanatory. To start in detail, I got excited about the CM Installer so I downloaded, prepped my stock locked phone and proceeded to install, in which the ROM installed(4.3.1) but no Google Apps package. When I saw that CM is actually on 4.4 I thought to just go ahead and flash it the usual way. ROM installed fine, but still no GAPPS. "can't open zip" is what last appeared.
Same with others, I tried flashing a GE ROM, the Guru ROM Reset and nothing. Even switched recoveries from CWM to TWRP. At this point I am stumped as now I have just a basic phone and can't even use Google services
Edit: I forgot I was supposed to install check out similar topics when I was typing the title, I'll look for answers elsewhere while waiting for one here
I'm having the damnest time trying to get TWRP installed.
I've installed ROMS before on my galaxy notes, so I'm not a total noob.
I'm well aware that the TWRP version needs to match the ROM version.
I'd LIKE to get the EU rom installed. Here's what I've tried:
Custom Roms: Need installation via TWRP, which I can't get working.
Miflash: Keeps looking for *.bat files, which don't seem to exist in the ROMS i'm downloading
Updater app - won't install EU rom, saying: "It's not allowed to upgrade to unofficial ROM package".
I successfully used this to install chinese developer to 7.1.20 at the official link: http://www.miui.com/download-323.html
For some reason TWRP (twrp-3.0.2-0-lithium.img) still doesn't work, I can't swipe right or anything at the boot screen.
Incredibly frustrated right now!
Only way for me to get EU ROM installed was to flash it while on Global Stable Chinese with TWRP.
I've done it twice and realize that it's the only way to get any unofficial ROM installed.
After flashing EU ROM TWRP (rc1 or rc2) had the unresponsive touch screen problem. I solved it by using another version from a Chinese guy. Different UI but same functionality. Always working.
Check this guide. Part 4 has the link and instructions for the recovery I'm talking about.
http://en.miui.com/thread-471497-1-1.html
Sent from my MIghty MIX
Got it going, followed instructions/roms as per:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-mix/how-to/guide-flash-global-china-rom-root-gapps-t3510592
That post contains a miflashable rom (7.1.12) and the matching TWRP.
The combination of those two worked great.

Since the version 7.1.19 there is trwp issue with global and some custom rom. I can explain why I did to install my custom rom (Im currently using epic rom) : so in order assume that your bootloader is unlocked, you download the fastboot rom for mi mix and unzip it, then you install it directly by using the fastboot script (you choose at your convenience) on the unzipped folder (it take about 5-10mn). After that you will be able to install the right trwp ( I tried global and eu both worked) and enjoy with a custom rom.
If you have any question don't hesitate.
Patatalké depuis mon Mi Mix double sauce blanche caramel au beurre salé
It all started a while back, while I had Miui 7.5. After one year working perfectly, it suddenly started bootlooping.
Well, I tried everything. Factory reset, full wipes, mi flash, flashing xiaomi.eu, flashing en.miui, stable roms, developer roms, buying a new battery and replacing it, installing by OTG with full wipes.. absolutely EVERYTHING.
And after having done so many things, my phone DID come back to life with only one rom: leo_images_5.9.17_20150826.0000.7_5.0_cn_b8ece3aeb3
Now, why on Earth would it work perfectly with that one, (I don't like it and I would love to change it), and it doesn't work with the newest stable or developer one, global, xiaomi.eu, 6.12.22. LineageOS....
With all of those, when I flash them just like I flash the one that works (with twrp 2.8.6), it either shows the MI logo forever or it restarts every 10 seconds.
Does anyone have any idea?? Thanks!!!!
Do you still have that ROM? I need it to try solving a NO SERVICE issue
Yes you can't install other rom just try to download the newest from their page
Hey all, so yesterday i got my phone stuck in a "boot loop". I was trying to install TWRP and magisk to root my phone, after 2 hours of constantly reinstalling TWRP i finally got it to work. Every time my phone would end up just being on a black screen not being able to get to the TWRP menu but i could still access fastboot, i fixed it by "installing" orangefox TWRP, it never actually installed it but i got back into my phone at least, however now thats not working, and im stuck here only being able to get into fast boot. I followed this tutorial - https://forum.xda-developers.com/k20-pro/how-to/guide-redmi-k20-pro-unlock-root-t3974127. When i eventually did get it to install TWRP its because i used the All in one tool. Im currently stuck in the loop again, all i did was follow a youtube video on overclocking my display to 81hz, so i was in TWRP, made a backup of a file, flashed the 81hz.img and now i cant get into twrp or my phone.....How do i fix this?
Im currently flashing a stock rom with MiFlash, taking a few minutes but this is the last thing i can think of to fix this, no im not using the flash and lock method.
Edit: So i decided to use the All in one tool to flash the rom instead, i can now get into TWRP but the phone still by default boots to Fastboot, it wont actually go into the phone? What do i do?
Edit 2: Okay so that fixed it, now to reinstall TWRP with the all in one tool and reroot my phone.........
Edit 3: Okay so new issue, everything is all good TWRP is installed phone is rooted, but im trying to update to the latest MIUI 10 version (on MIUI 9 atm) and i can't install it? It downloads fine but it wont install? Do i have to flash the update file since it wont update through the updater?

A bit of advice.
If you don't know what your doing, don't follow random YouTube videos.
There are some very good videos and some very bad videos. If you don't know what you're doing, you won't know the difference between a good video and a bad one
Until you're comfortable with flashing mods, etc. stick to advice given here. It might not be instant, but you'll get good advice (if it's not good advice then someone else will point that out).
When asking for help give us more info.
What phone do you have?
What ROM was on the phone before first trying to install TWRP?
What version of TWRP have you been trying to install?
Why did you change from using Mi Flash Tool to the all in one tool?
Did you wait for the Mi Flash Tool to finish but it didn't work, or did you get bored of waiting for it to complete and cancelled it?
I appreciate this is a bit late now and not necessary as you've eventually sorted it yourself, but giving the info I've pointed out, at the time, may have actually got you some useful replies before you actually got there yourself.

I have a rough idea on what im doing i've done all this stuff before loads, but xiaomi just seems to be different idk. Considering this is the k20/k20pro section i assumed its obvious thats what i was using.......Everything is sorted like i said but i cant get MIUI to update, it downloads, i hit reboot and it boots me to TWRP instead of installing the update.......i've come to really like the MIUI without the app drawer but now i have an app drawer as im on Android 9, I flashed the lastest rom but before flashing i didnt have an app drawer and was on the latest build so no idea whats going on there......guess i just have to live with this now?

What's not obvious is whether you have a Chinese or Indian K20 Pro, or a global or European 9T Pro. Also whether you're trying to install the version of MIUI that is correct for the phone, or if you're flashing from a different region. As you say Xiaomi does things a bit different, so we're seeing things in these forums that what works on one version of the phone doesn't quite work on another.

Hello all,
I bought recently a used mi8 for replacing my oldie mi5.
I have reading several posts that are related with flashing the roms, and several talk about the encryption storage.
I know that xiaomi encrypts the storage and that I need to format, but I get confused with the necessity of having to flash or not the dm-verity pack.
So what I know so far and please correct me if I'm wrong:
First boot loader unlock no problem
Second install Twrp, can I use the latest official or search for a specific package????
Third in the Twrp format everything
Fourth after format I remember something about keeping system read only or not, what do I need to do???
Fifth grab an asop rom and flash it
Sixth if I want root, use the Magisk, normally or do I need to pay attention to anything else.
Sorry, for so many things, but I read plenty, before asking

Well come to Mi8 mate.
1. You need to unlock bootloader
2. Install official or IMO use Orangefox recovery which is based on latest twrp with some themes and extras.
3. You are right
4. After installing twrp or similar you need to slide on first run if you want to enable flashing etc.
5. Choose any rom you want
6. Yes Magisk is your only option, if you need root.
However if your device is unencrypted than you don't need to install dmverity. I am also used many AOSP roms on my unencrypted device and faced zero issues.

Well I repeated the same steps once again and voila it worked.
Bootloader unlocked successfully and my Mi8 is with Asop pixel experience.
Thanks once again
