I've installed gapps 11, and also the fix, with no ill effects (so far ) I read somewhere that it's OK to do so.
I had to install the fix to get my calendar working on 0.6
installed both gapps and fix with no ill effects
the Gapps 20111230 a lot are mentioning works out of the box, no fix needed.
I would recommend those.
But other Gapps, like v10.3/4 etc and v11 work aswell but sometimes with the gapps fix.
there is no reason for you to 'upgrade' to any of these gapps, since the 20111230 version will automatically update the apps in 'em.
It is your choosing though, it won't make much of a difference which one you flash.
thanks!

you know...that's what i was prone to thinking...but, you never know.
thanks for your response.
it's always a good idea to get some confirmation in 'real time' or as much in real time as is possible.
tuts and walk throughs are an excellent learning/practicum tool.
as we all know, however...they can get dated within hours of being posted (rendering them obsolete).
so, double and triple checking never hurts.
even after the fact...
thanks, again!
Hello.
I have been using BB9 for a couple of weeks. I am pretty happy with it, and other than a couple of things I do not yet understand (how to put every app on the SD card is the main one), we're getting along great. I am curious, though, when I read about installing a new rom (make nandroid, wipe phone, install new rom and new gapps), if the gapps file is unique to every rom, or if I can use the gapps already installed for multiple roms? I want to try Paranoid Android and AOIP. Thanks.
99% of the time the gapps package is universal amongst roms. just make sure to get the right version for the roms you are installing so 4.2, 4.1 4.0 gapps are all different

Looking for your input in terms of the best ROM with a high emphasis on battery life. Also had a few questions in regards to flashing ROMs, this will be my first time doing it:
1) What is the best ROM out there with great emphasis on battery life but still maintains performance (i.e. the best rom )?
1) What is your favorite ROM and why (such a noob original question, heh)?
2) Is a clean wipe necessary to flash a ROM?
3) Will I have to wipe my phone every time I update the ROM?
4) Will I have to wipe my phone when I update to a new version of Android?
5) Can I flash a custom Kernel with a custom ROM?
6) Should I just wait for official CM?
Still a little bit of a noob with Android, I just made the jump from iOS for the N6. Thanks in advance!

Battery life and performance speed is more a function of the kernel and how you choose and set up the various Governors that are in it.
When you change your ROM you need to clean wipe. Using TWRP a clean wipe will not wipe your media / storage files.
If you are updating a rom to a later version of the same rom, a dirty flash is usually possible especially if the Android version hasn't changed.
You can flash just about any kernel available for your device with any rom.
I wouldn't wait for an " official " release as there are so many good roms already out there. Read description of each before you decide. They vary from almost indistinguishable from stock to wildly customizable.

Gotcha, thanks for the clarification! Definitely helped me get a better grasp of things . I've been looking around at different ROMs and can't quite decide

1) There's really no 1 ROM with significantly better battery life then the others (more battery life difference from kernels). I'd pick based on the features you want. I'm using LiquidSmooth primarily if that helps.
2) Yes, generally.
3) Not for most updates, but you should anyways.
4) Yes, generally.
5) Yes, with all ROMs. The custom kernels is where you'll see differences in battery drain and performance due to due to custom CPU governor settings among other things. I prefer Franco's kernel.
6) Wouldn't bother, but that's up to you.
My main recommendation would be to try out a bunch of ROMs/Kernels and stick with what you like. Use titanium backup and/or TWRP backups for quick reverting when switching ROMs. Kernels never require wipes, so you can switch them out to your heart's content.
1) What is your favorite ROM and why (such a noob original question, heh)?
The ROM I compiled myself and built to my needs.
2) Is a clean wipe necessary to flash a ROM?
Only if you're coming from a different ROM than the one you're using currently. You may have to wipe your ROM coming from the same one if specified by the OP.
3) Will I have to wipe my phone every time I update the ROM?
See above.
4) Will I have to wipe my phone when I update to a new version of Android?
See above.
5) Can I flash a custom Kernel with a custom ROM?
Yes.
6) Should I just wait for official CM?
"Official" nightlies have begun.
There is no best ROM. Plz...
Hello everyone,
I have been seduced by the Mi5 and got one. Even I work in IT, I have never flashed a phone and actually didn't plan to do it when I bought the Mi5. I read that the original Chinese ROM had English in it.
So I was happy to just use this ROM in English and that's it (I'm not picky in term of UI).
But I had several bad surprised when I received it:
- many things are still in Chinese
- several applications, even if they are in English, present/search Chinese results (actually I should have thought about it earlier)
- I installed Google Play but some services keep on failing and several apps won't install or update
As a result, I'm finding myself having to flash the phone with a custom ROM in order to get something correct.
As explained in the title I would like to have some advises on which ROMs would be the easiest and most stable to have? I'm not looking the for most fancy or classy ROM. I just want something that would be stable, run smoothly GApps and popular apps (Facebook, WhatsApp, etc...) and works with the most vital/used features of the phone (Wifi, Bluetooth, finger-print, camera, etc...). I have seen threads about several ROMs (Cyanogen, Xiaomi.eu, Resurrection Remix, Official Global Multi, etc...) but don't know which one would suit me best.
Finally, I have done my homework before posting this message, and read how to flash a ROM (especially on the xda-university). Here are the general required steps I have noted:
Enter in USB debug mode
Install a custom recovery app? (I've seen you can flash them too?)
Download you customer ROM into the SDcard
Use the custom recovery to backup your phone (I actually don't need to backup since my phone is empty)
Install the rom by selecting the zip in the root of the SDcard
That said I have seen several other methods and terms on various threads talking about specific stages or the process.
People are "rooting" the phone. Is that necessary for what I want to do? I guess so.
People are are using "flashboot". I read it's another way to flash? What is best for the Mi5?
Please don't hesitate to redirect me to some guides/tutorials if there some fundamentals I have missed.
Thanks! :good:

Hi,
I would recommend xiaomi.eu's rom : https://xiaomi.eu/community/threads/6-6-30.32496/
It's fully translated, stable, includes the Google apps. I've tested a lot of roms, first on a Mi4c then on my Mi5.
If you're going for a MIUI rom (and not a CyanogenMod based one), this is the best in my opinion.
The roms comes in 2 versions : the stable (no root and updated every month or so) and the weekly one (with root and updated every week).
Installation is super easy, you just need to unlock the bootloader of your Mi5 first : http://en.miui.com/unlock/

Thanks for these helpful comments!
So would you say that Xiaomi.eu ROM is more stable than the CyanogenMod ROM? And it's more stable than the official MIUI Global ROM?
In terms of things not working at all, have Xiaomi.eu and CyanogenMod ROMs everything supported/working? That's what I worried about. I would be happy to flash a custom ROM but I would like to make sure it has most of the phone features working correctly (finger-print, bluetooth, wifi, GPS, camera, etc...).

CynaogenMod is, indeed, a bit less stable because it's a port and the kernel sources haven't been published yet by xiaomi so no optimisation on this side.
But CM is the way to go if you prefer android stock over MIUI's implementation.
Xiaomi.eu's rom are as stable as official ones but richer in features and optimized (see the list on the rom download page) and with much less bloatware. They remove a lot of Chinese specific apps from and make their rom Google apps compatible out of the box.
And yes, everything works correctly, especially if you install the stable version (the weekly is more prone to bugs because it's updated all the time).
At the end of the day, I would say it's the EU/US version of MIUI. If tomorrow Xiaomi want to sell their products in the western part of the world, this is probably the kind of rom they will put on their devices.

Thanks a lot for these advises. It sounds like Xiaomi.eu is what I'm looking for!
I'm glad if I could help. Let us know if this rom fits you
I too would recommend the xiaomi eu Rom. The cm one works well but if you want to use android pay it has to be the xiaomi one.

Thanks for this info - i have only tried the global roms and to be honest - they bug me !
CM - as awesome as it is...still has its little bugs and annoyances.
Hopefully this is the way forward !

RevolutionOs
It is hard to answer as their are many custom rom and it's difficult to be sure.
But if you think of it, theoretically, it should be the rom with the less extra features and especially a rom without google apps (like LineageOS or HavocOS without gapps) that suck the battery out of our phones.
Could be kernel optimization too.
Could be the apps you installed on your phone too.
Many options possible.
I would suggest going with a custom rom without gapps or a rom well rated/tested (as it is potentially appreciated by users therefore has good battery experience).
So... I guess you better try the more popular of them and see which has the best for you
