When receiving a an email, message, or whatever (e.g., Gmail, snapchat, kakaotalk, google voice), the active notification appears as normal (vibrate/sound + screen display), but then the phone repeatedly displays the notification until it's unlocked. I do want the initial notification, but just the one. After the initial notification, further notif. only display the screen (no sound/vibrate).
When there isn't a notification, it doesn't display the clock over and over again as if I'm picking it up, so it's not like it's being moved around or something.
It did not used to do this, but I'm not sure exactly what setting/app/whatever would have caused this.
'Active notifications' has an option to disable certain apps or turn off completely, but there are no 'repeat' or 'lockscreen' settings located there, or in individual apps.
When I googled/searched for the issue (key words: active, notifications, repeat, stop, android, alert), I found these related posts, which seem to describe what I'm experiencing (albeit on different phones). Edit: ah, I can't post links yet, if you would like to look at them, please google the parts-of-the-url below

Has anyone else had this problem? What settings, if any, can I check for to disable these unwanted (repeated) notifications or how else might I go about it?
This isn't a bug or an issue, it's a feature. It's something called "breathing" notifications.
Every so often, the phone will give you the notification again just to be sure you saw it the first time. There is no way to remove or alter this feature through Active Display's settings.
If you are looking for an equivalent to Active Display, a good one (and the only one I know of) is DynamicNotifications by GreatBytes.
Have you tried swiping the notification to the side? That should dismiss it.

It seemed to me it wasn't normal behavior, as I don't remember it happening when I first got the device, but if you say it's intended, I'll go with that.
DarkWolffe: you say "every so often". The notifications are appearing every 5 seconds or so. Is this inline with what your own experience? If I can't change that interval from the native settings, might the app you linked be able to? It seems that DynamicNotifications is made for devices that don't already have Active Notifications. (perhaps I'm supposed to disable AN and only use DN?) Thank you for the link, though, I'll check it out.
scottjb: Ah, I figured that out sometime after making this post, but thank you for that tip. It's useful when I may actually see the phone, but when I'm away from the phone or sleeping, for example, I'd prefer it not to behave that way. I realize it's an AMOLED screen, so the battery really shouldn't be affected too much, but it doesn't feel right to have it turn on over and over again so often.
Knowing they're called "breathing notifications" has allowed me to better search for related topics. It seems that turning the phone over or putting it in a pocket will stop the breathing. I'd still prefer if I could change the interval somehow, but I'm satisfied to have figured most of how it works out.
The interval of the notifications seems to change over time. When you first get a text message etc it seems to flash the notifications more often, after some time I believe it slows down a little. You can have the feature disabled at night, my ringer is silent from midnight to 9 am and my active notifications are disabled from 1 to 7 am. When disabled at night it only stops it from displaying on its own, if you move the phone it will still display the clock and any notifications.
LG Pulse with KitKat 4.4.2 same issue
I don't have a Moto X, I have the LG Pulse from Virgin Mobile Custom. My notifications do that, too! I have KitKat 4.4.2. I have never experienced this and I certainly would NOT make it a default nor intended action. Mine start out at the first notification + sounds, then 10 seconds later, 15 seconds later, 20 sec, 25 sec, etc. It is very annoying and there is no option in the system settings nor individual app settings to stop that behavior. I may just have to turn off notification sounds as this is ridiculous.
You can try setting the "sleep at night" option, and adjust the time to be on all the time (1am to 12am).
I believe this setting is supposed to suppress the breathing notifications. Though, it won't stop it from showing if you move the phone around... I know this cause my phone charges on my bed at night and when I roll around, it triggers AD, even though I have sleep mode on.
Hope it helps!

I have moto x with Lollipop. I cannot get the sleep mode to work correctly. I am getting notification sounds at night waking me up. Yes all my settings are set correctly with Downtime and Sleep Mode. Am I missing something? Anyone else experiencing this with Lollipop?
As much as I love Lollipop, as much as I love the Moto X, downtime and priority notifications are a mess. They should've just disabled one or the other... I've been tinkering with mine all day to get it to work with my meetings on my calendar.

Same exact issue as you. Even though in priority mode I have all 3 option turned off (call/texts etc) I still get notification sounds coming through. I have tried every possible combination without success. The new notification system is the perfect example of "fixing" something that wasn't broken to begin with.
My only solution that I've found to work is to use Power Toggles as a widget. It let's you select 4 volume settings and has worked without a hitch. Hopefully the issue just a bug... But I won't hold my breath for a transparent or timely fix.
Give Power Toggles a try, works great!
So here is what I did. I completed a factory reset and it works now, but don't do a factory reset. Here is why it works. I went to the sounds and notifications, app notifications. I have hangouts and Gmail set to priority meaning it will alert me even when it is set to priority mode only and notifications are set to silent. Stupid me for changing that to begin with. Check that area.

Believe it or not, I double checked those too. They are greyed (unchecked) so I shouldn't still be receiving the notifications. I factory reset may have been what fixed it for you. Speaking generally, it's ridiculous that anyone would have to do that in order to have things work as they should. But I guess you can say there are always some bugs whenever a new update is rolled out - it's frustrating nonetheless.
Ok so I'm on 6.0.1 and for the life of me I can't figure out this spastic notification behavior. When I'm using my phone, notifications come in just fine. However let's say I've left my phone on my desk and come back in an hour and pick up the phone... as soon as I turn the screen on, all the notifications start flying in from the past hour, including all the notification sounds 1 by 1 in quick succession. I've checked all the options I can to see if there is anything related to this behavior but I can't find it.
I've gotten used to iOS where my notifications are always on the screen waiting for me so I can pick up the phone and glance and put back down, without the hoopla of watching them fly in after turn the screen on and listening to all the annoying notification sounds jumbled together. I'm by no means new to Android however. I've owned many but my last was my N5 which got long in the tooth so I switched to a iPhone 6S as my daily driver and have been using my N5 just to play around and keep up with development of my favorite ROMS and apps. I saw the 6 on a really good deal so I decided to pick up it and see what it would be like to have Android as my daily driver again.
Anyhow, all that being said, how do I get the desired outcome of notifications actually coming in when the phone is idle and waiting for me without having to load after I turn the screen on? I'm guessing notifications in 6.0+ are tied to wakelock events but not sure. Any thoughts?

What you are seeing is androids new doze feature. It puts apps to sleep when the device has been on a flat surface for a long time unmoved. Go into settings/apps/What ever app you want and change the battery priority settings.

Ah OK. I totally forgot about doze... Want aware it was implemented in this manner. All the setting to change this would be in the app/notification section and Rick the "treat add priority" option? The description associates this option with so not disturb mode but it also affects doze too?

Ahh sorry had to find it again. It is under settings/battery then hit the 3dot menu for battery optimization. Then select the app. And change the settings. An easy work around is to plug it in when you will be leaving it for awhile. This disables doze.

If I set a schedule, do not disturb turns on, but it does not turn off in the morning, I've only seen it work once.
What about everyone else?
It works fore me as expected. No problems.

Same with me. It often doesn't turn off in the morning.
How can they mess up software between phones lol.
I've had it with Asus on the rog 2. Things don't work for me and perfect for some others, but not all.
It works normally for me. It might related to an application.

I'd have no idea what app might be doing that.
I've also had issues with scheduled DND not working - turns on normally but doesn't turn off at the scheduled time
If you are like me and migrated from another Android phone to Sony XPeria 1 II and restored your backup onto the new phone, then you probably have issues with the "Do Not Disturb" you had in the old phone. I was going bonkers trying to figure out why it didn't work. Changing the schedule profile didn't fix it either. What finally fixed it was deleting the schedule altogether and then creating a new schedule. Then it worked as intended.
Also, ticking "Alarm can override" option messes up the schedule as well.
I have the same problem even when I set 2 schedules hoping the 2nd one will work as a backup... I don't think I imported the schedule from old phone settings. Anyway i will delete and create a brand new schedule. Fingers crossed.

The function works properly, it's just that the indicator stays on. Maybe it's by design, to show that a schedule is active, regardless if at that moment notifications are enabled or not. My do not disturb schedule ends at 10 am, at that moment I get all notifications of the night before, but the indicator is still on.

Unfortunately didn't work for me most of the time as phone stayed in DND mode (even though alarm will sound) and frustrating since I missed a lot of calls since I don't get any ring sound or notifications sound.

As stated above, the phone is on silent mode. Notifications are there but no sound. I have to turn off DND manually and it is frustrating!
Just to report in: I've definitely had issues with DND. I thought it may have been a magisk module or something that I've done, but I think it's clear that it's something going on with the ROM itself. The only things I migrated from my old phone was text messages. Everything else was new data. Unless every random person in this thread happens to be doing the same weird thing that prevents this, the ROM itself has issues.
A user (cmahey) from Reddit mentioned that in the main DND menu there's a 'Default duration' option, just set it to 'Ask Every Time' and problem solved. I have tested for 2 days and seems to be working!

You are right, I always have my phone on silent, but I saw the notifications coming through, so I assumed that it worked properly.
I did some reading, many brands seem to have this problem. And I did some testing and found a working solution (at least on my device): If you go to Settings, Sound, Do not Disturb, go to the schedule that you set and go to it's properties. there you will see a setting which translated from Dutch should be something like The clock can ignore the endtime. It's the setting under the Endtime. Disable this setting. Now it should work properly (I tested only one day now, so no guarantees)

Well that didn't work......guess I'll just stick to manually turning DND off. At least it turns on at night time, which is the main thing.
After I installed the latest firmware update (194) it is working correctly since 2 days.

Bummer, on day 3 it didn't turn off automatically
My Galaxy S21 Ultra received an update on 4/10. I noticed, after receiving that update, that my phone was vibrating for all notifications and also when I turned the screen off. Digging around a little I realized that the option in Settings/Sounds and Vibration/Notification Vibration Pattern/ no longer shows "none" as an optional vibration pattern. (I believe I must have had set "none" as my Notification Vibration Pattern before this update, either manually, or perhaps by default. I don't remember doing it.)
The result of this is that there is no way to prevent the phone from vibrating on EVERY notification, since a pattern other than "none" must be set.
I also believe that this vibrating continues for at least some notifications even when the phone is in "Do Not Disturb" mode.
I can't imagine I am the only person experiencing this.
I have reported this to Samsung. Assuming others are experiencing this, it would be great if you could note that here, and also let Samsung technical support know, so that they can get this fixed.
Thanks!
Nope, your not alone. Was hoping someone would have already posted a fix. Dont understand why updates seem so hard to do these days,.................
have you checked in the app notification settings?
press and hold the app > i button > notifications > check each notification option and maybe disable the vibrate if you don't want it to vibrate?
and you have submitted an error report on samsung members app? or the community?

I just checked several apps. The apps all have different notification options, but none of the apps I checked had a specific notification option for vibrate.

I did both.
I made a post very similar to my initial post here on the Samsung forums. And as I said in my initial post here, I did report it to Samsung. It was just the first level tech support and while the rep was very polite, and assured me that it would be corrected in a coming patch, she also said she had not heard about it before. So I took that basically as lip-service, and am not holding my breath. That's part of the reason I suggested that others also report it, as I'm guessing the more people that report the problem, the greater the likelihood that it will get resolved.

I only had the phone for a week and forced the April update as soon as it was available in Canada. Noticed the same idiotic removal of "None" in vibration pattern options.
Literally the first phone where I can't remove vibrations.
One solution might be to reduce the "Vibration intensity" for notifications to zero... but it's a sh!tty workaround.

I hadn't thought of changing the vibration intensity to zero. I just did that and there were actually options to set the vibration intensity separately for incoming calls, touch interactions, and NOTIFICATIONS! I don't know if those options were always there or not, but if not perhaps that is why the "none" vibration pattern was removed. (I'm not suggesting that was actually a good idea.) In any case, I think setting the notifications vibration intensity to zero, while leaving the others as they were, is actually a good work-around for me. Thanks!
Cheers for tip, will give it a try

I did a quick Google search, and the option to select different vibration intensity levels for the three different selections is not new. So that in no way explains the missing vibration option "none."
