no apps after reset - Fire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys. I bought someones amazon fire 5th gen 2015 model SV98LN . i master reset the tablet, but now there are no apps and no launcher. everything starts up fine. I see the amazon logo, then the fire logo. Once it finally gets to the main screen, all i see if the lock screen. I swipe to unlock and all i see is a blank screen, but i am able to use the pull down menu and able to press the home button but then nothing is there and it goes back to the lock screen. If i register my amazon account to it, it tries to make a kids account. but i can only select apps that i wanna share that i have downloaded/purchased before.
other info.
when i select the check for update, it looks like it hangs and goes back to the lock screen.
when i do another master reset, it does the same thing
i tried reading on how to load up apps, but the tablet doesn't have a browser for me to download the google play store. I tried to use the "legal and compliance" section browser to download it, but that won't let me download the file.
i tried reading stuff off the micro sd and all i see is the stats of the drive and it won't let me view content
also i can't tell what version its on since the update section looks like it's been removed or something
Can someone please guide me what I can do. I don't want this tablet to go to waste.

Download the full update from amazon and flash it with recovery. What was on if before you reset it? if it was rooted, it might be missing files necessary for setup.

[Q] Sideloaded Books on Nook Homescreens ?

Anyone figured out how to add sideloaded books on the 3 homescreens ? currently only stuff bought from the B&N store can go on the homescreens. Maybe some sort of hack ?
I can hope right ?
That is my only gripe about this device. I really wanted some control over the home page. I understand why they did it, but it just bothered me.
I have installed ADW as a new home screen and am looking for a copy of Launcher Pro to try as well as an alternate to the stock home screen. I also loaded Astro in the hope that I can somehow get individual books and folders on the home screen. The good thing is that you don't lose any of the main BN features at the bottom of the screen. I was able to put the library as an app on the home screen which works for now.
If anybody knows how to do this, I'd love to find out. It's my last hurdle to this being a perfect machine for me.
I originally wanted this as well, but since I rooted, I no longer want it or need it.
I installed LauncherPro and choose to use that as my defacto Home, so I never see the original B&N setup home screen.
Now I can place apps there or anything else. To me, apps are more important than seeing my book covers on the home screen. The only drawback is that I have to go to the library to see my books, but hey, it's a small price to pay.
My advice is this:
If you want to install apps and not just your books on the "home" screen, root the NC and go with LauncherPro or an equivilent.
If you want the original B&N experience and want to sideload your non B&N books then wait until someone comes up with a method, as far as I know, it isn't a priority at the moment.
But rest assured, someone will figure it out.

[Q] Market Downloads Not Working

Hopefully someone can help me get the market to download apps.
Steps taken:
1. Rooted with Auto-nooter 0.1
2. Ran Auto-nooter 2.12.15 over top of 0.1 to fix some stuff
3. Market failed to download apps
4. Factory Reset - reverted to stock
5. Re-registered NC to functioning stock device
6. Rooted with Auto-nooter 2.12.15
7. Got root, followed all instructions to enable device and extras in order specified
8. Market still not downloading
Can anyone else say they are having this issue? What about a possible fix to this?
When I went to Sync gmail for the first time, my account was already in the device. I'm assuming this was because of the Youtube activation with my gmail account?
Thanks
I'm also having a problem downloading apps from the Marketplace. They show up as Downloading but never download. I searched for the problem on the Android Marketplace help, which offers the following suggestions (go to google support androidmarket and click the download issues troubleshooting page):
If your application is stalled at "Starting download", please use a few of the following troubleshooting steps to help your download to completion:
Confirm that there is connectivity on your device (contact your mobile service provider if you aren't connected)
If downloading a paid application, confirm that your credit card information is up to date by logging in your Google Checkout account
Make sure that your phone is logged into Google Talk by following these steps:
Go to your phone’s app launcher, and press the Talk app
If you’re already logged into Talk, press Menu, and then touch Sign out
Launch Talk again to sign in
If unsuccessful after attempting these steps, let us know and we'll be happy to investigate further. However, I cannot sign in to Talk on the NC. Anyone having similar problems?
I followed the steps below to Root, after Rooting and Unrooting due to the Market issue:
Chose Complete action using Setup Wizard
Tapped Droid bot
Skipped Learn how to use your LogicPD Zoom2
Skipped Set up your Google Account
Selected both boxes for Use Google Location and clicked Next
Clicked the menu arrow -- settings -- Wireless & connected to WiFi
Launched Youtube, accepted ToS, clicked menu and added my linked google account
Launched Gmail and refreshed
Launched market and accepted ToS.
Well, my limited experience (i only got market able to work last night at 3 AM Pacific) taught me that even if you don't see an item downloading in the task bar, if you go to the main Android Market screen and click Downloads you'll see it there. And it installs on its own. You do see the "installed" check mark symbol though, after it's done.
For some reason, mine started working all of a sudden. I didn't do anything different since second root attempt. Maybe I wasn't waiting long enough for the download to kick off. Anyways, thanks guys.

[Q] Rooted kindle - reader doesn't work suddenly?

I rooted a 1st gen Kindle Fire last year, and everything was working great until today.
After I copied a couple of PDF files to the Documents folder, when I opened the device back up... the Kindle Reader would no longer work. I tried deleting those PDFs -- didn't help.
Initially if I opened any book or document, it would display a little circular progress indicator for a few seconds and then close. Afterwards, opening any book or document leads to an immediate closure and a return to the screen I was just on.
I've tried doing a full reboot. Doesn't help.
Video works, my rooted applications seem to work, *although*:
Rootkeeper v2.0.3 says that these are checked:
* I have the superuser app installed and
* that /system supports root protection
BUT these are unchecked:
* Device rooted
* Root permission granted
* Protected su copy available
Not sure what that means. Rootkeeper does not give me any options to backup or restore anything.
So any idea what happened and what I can do now? Should I unroot this, and if so, how? Or should I re-root, and if so, how?
I'm running 6.3.2 and I'm on a Mac so Kindle Fire Utility doesn't work for me unfortunately.
I'm thinking it seems like Amazon installed an update, because I probably wasn't running 6.3.2 last year... but I don't remember ever updating it deliberately or approving an update.
I found the solution.
Google Play had updated my Kindle app to a Google version. I went to Play Store, clicked on the standard Menu button at the bottom of the screen, went to "My apps", clicked on Kindle, and clicked on uninstall. When it asked whether I wanted to uninstall all updates, I said yes.
I also went to Settings in the same app under the Menu button and turned off auto-updates.
Fixed.

Update Device Title - Not signed in to Amazon

So I'm trying to go the no amazon route and have side loaded google play and from there installed most of my standard non-cell phone related apps. (Thank you sd_shadow) My only question now is, has anyone tried to change the device title/name? In the top right hand corner it says "My Fire" but before I factory reset I know I was able to to update that title. The only thing I can think that is system different is I'm not signed in to Amazon via the system settings. So short of signing in has anyone found a way to update that title?
Bumping this thread.
Just got my mom and sister Fire Tablet. I don't want to register it to my account in fear they might purchase something without knowing.
Anyway to change the device name without registering?

kindle fire 7gen family link loop

so playing with the family link loop where it
Then:
Installed the four APKs needed to install Google Play Store: https://forum.xda-developers.com/ama...-fire-t3486603
Installed the Family Link Manager APK. I posted it here: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1eV...aZYYsd-2E1351C
Launched Google Play Store
Signed in as my child
It asks which parent is setting up the device. I choose myself.
Got a warning about Android 5 and not be able to control an apps permissions after approving.
Then, a message that Family Link Manager needs to be installed. I already installed it at this point.
Checking Info...
It asks for a name for the Device
Asks which installed apps should be blocked
Then I get a screen that says, "Next, you'll activate Family Link Manager, which helps parents..."
After clicking next, I get a screen that says, "This profile manager is required for Google Accounts managed with Family Link." The only option is to click, "GOT IT." I then end up on the previous, "Next, you'll activate..." screen. If I click NEXT there, I see the same, "This profile manager is required..." screen. The process is now stuck in this loop
but if i try the loop 3 times i can not use google play,. but i have to redo this every 2nd day or so... it wont quite stay/finalise sign in
how can i stop this
I am also having this issue. Have you figured it out?
I found no solution for now . ...
Theres no fix for this. I think the fire is missing a option that family link assumes is there
Try it to factory reset or hard reset and re-install the Google Services
Another solution: https://screentimelabs.com/help/how-to-uninstall-google-family-link/
if you get the manager apk from another device, you can get one step further. however, it continues until it gets to the step where it wants to activate the device manager and the screen for an instant shows, but then goes to a "are you sure you want to cancel" screen.
If you activate the device manager manually, unfortunately, it still shows the same screen.
