Apologies if this post is in the wrong forum. I don't have sufficient posts under my account I can't as yet post under the developer (ROM) thread.
I've just installed the CM7 Kang Build P204-54 on my Optimus 2X.
I notice that the overclocking and undervolting is not available under the Cyanogen, Performance, CPU settings. Basically no values show up under Min and Max frequency.
Is this a limitation on the kernel that has been used in this ROM?
If so what should I do in order to gain this feature. I would like very much to undervolt and overclock the CPU to extend the battery life and get better performance.
Temaseks P204-54 comes with stock kernel which doesn't allow you to OC or UV using CM settings. Therefore you need to install a custom kernel like IronKernel or ETaNa Kernel, which allows you to OC to 1.5 Ghz and 1.4 Ghz respectively.
Also you can't UV using CM settings, you should use a third party app for that like Pimp My CPU, or SetCPU.
Thanks for the info.
I've been looking at the Eterna Kernel. What does the RAM hack value mean?
Also will I lose any data/settings, or should I do a backup before flashing?

The different Ram hack values means the amount of extra ram that will be available on your phone. The phone uses the extra ram from the GPU, so that means the bigger the Ramhack, more things don't work. More info can be found in the original thread of course.
Normally, when you flash a kernel you need to wipe cache and dalvik, however ETaNa Kernel will do this automatically for you in its install script, so there's no need for a wipe with this kernel. Therefore you won't lose your data, however making a nandroid backup is never a bad idea.
Vadonkas kernel runs very well. With 32 MB RAM hack almost everything is working but mostly reboot issues. There's also a 32 MB with shared memory but this can have strange behavior. Read the thread, a lot of info.
A little advice...don't set ramhack values...it gives only problems...if you wanna more ram, you can "virtually" add it with compcache in cyanogenmod performance settings

Well 32MB Ramhack works fine for me. No problems whatsoever, only reboot doesn't work but that's easily manageable by pressing the power button another time when you want to power up the phone. It's true that with a bigger Ramhack, more things won't work... But besides that it doesn't cause much problems. Obviously it's your choice if you want a big Ramhack.
By the way: there is also a no-Ramhack version of ETaNa Kernel, so you might wanna consider that.
Is the native O2X RAM so low that the phone gets RAM starved? Is the extra RAM a good thing to have?
If not is there any disadvantage is downloading the 0MB RAMhack version and then going with markop90's suggestion of virtually adding extra RAM (if needed) using the CM performance settings?

The O2X has 512 MB Ram, and about 300 MB is available for the apps etc. Most of the time there's only about 100-150 MB free RAM on your phone. In my opinion this is too low, so I chose for a 32MB Ramhack. Now I've always 100+ MB Ram available. So in my case it's a good thing to have.
There are no advantages whatsoever with the 0MB version. Everything works fine and there's no extra ram added.
There are also no disadvantages with enabling compcache I believe, as said before this creates more ram when you need it. (I also have this enabled)
I'm running the 0 ram hack version here and everything is super smooth. I would suggest starting with this one and if you find you are still running low on ram try the 32MB version etc...
Vadonka offer several versions so you can choose whatever you like. Personally I chose the 32mb Ramhack (not shared!). Only reboot doesn't work but to push the ON-button is not really a problem However, for some others the 1x click is too much and they prefer no ramhack.
You can also choose more ramhack if you like, but then it starts to have more issues like no full video resolution etc.
Thanks for the information guys. I will flash the 0MB Eterna kernel during the coming weekend I think. Or maybe tomorrow if I can spare the time.
Btw, would installation of the kernel remove system settings? I mean through the wipe?
The good thing about ETaNa Kernel is that it wipes automatically wipes cache and dalvik everytime you flash it. So, everytime you want to flash a custom kernel you need to wipe cache and dalvik. That means there's no data loss.

@temasek : Could you point me to a page showing the main features of your Kang . I'm on the CWM 204 nightly and was wondering what are the significant featural differences between your Kang and CM7 nightly . Video / screenshots would be great . Can I install you Kang on top of CM 204 nightly ( without deleting data)
Guess I should make this a new thread for noobs like me

Hi...
Im using Slim Bean v7 and its very good!
Gamerzrom v4 best for gaming and multitasking but battery drains kinda fast, currenty im using ParanoidAndroid 3.69 latest and at 3 days of testing it looks amazing good battery, with alot of options, also its good for gaming
my recommendations
Hi!
Have tried many ROMS(including Slim, CM, GamerzROM) and at this moment I have only few favorites:
Supernexus - clean AOSP ROM
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2219235
MokeeOS - has a lot of features and very fast(I wondered how )
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2352448
GearKernel tastes good with ROMs listed above
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2330446
[jOP40D] OFICIAL ANDROID 4.2.1 <RC2> (JB) GALAXY NEXUS STOCK ROM by ELITEMOVIL - old but good one
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2004906
CM 10.2 - testing it on my old i9000 and it feels like fast and stable with good memory management.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2385178
Listed ROMs gave me about 4000 or better in Antutu Benchmark.
Hope this is helpful.
Also recommend to set "Background process limit" to 2 or 3 in Developer options
thx for suggestions.im tryin gamerzrom v4 now,but battery drains a lil fast.performance is good on app's but still tempe run 2 is laggy.i think facebook-twitter-vine-foursquare-gmail-outlook-google maps causes.but it is a smart phone i cant use phone without these app's also i cant play games :/

I tried hellybean once again. I had been using cm7.2 and cm10.1 nightlies until 20130723 build was released. this is the best release of the devilkernel and hellybean in a long while. This is probably because cm10.1 is pretty darn stable right now.
Anyways, with hellybean you need the devil kernel manager app to configure it properly. You can also use nstools to undervolt, but it's alright even if you don't.
It's basically cm10.1 but you get the devilkernel and the xposed framework with the rom. You'll have to install the gapps for android 4.2 separately.
http://hellybean.com/I900042.html
It's really a great kernel (right now, semaphore is good too), and the 20130723 release is great. Battery is decent, performance is flawless if you tweak it. Use the dkm app and also enter Systemsettings -> System -> Find "Build.prop Mods" -> set wifi scan interval to 150, pm sleep to "power collapse", dalvik cache to 48m and enable gpu acceleration at the bottom. These tweaks might be "placebo/sugarpills" but it shouldn't cause problems. You can check "optimize tcp stack" too, not that I notice the difference really.
In DKM app, you could set ram setting to "XL", enable zram and set zramsize to 150. on the cpu tab, use smartassv2 governor with the powersave profile, or normal difference is negligable. Enable deep idle if you want. next page, enable fast charge if you know to disable it when you want to transfer files over usb. On the misc tab, make sure bluetooth kill is on, fsync control is off and dynamic fsync is on. Smooth ui should be on if you feel it's laggy otherwise.
That's how I've configured it for now. I don't think I'll upgrade hellybean for a while, that usually leads to unstability and/or performance loss.
ThinkingBridge ROM
ROM: ThinkingBridge ROM Stable-1
Theme it with : SGS IV - TW + AccuWeather S4
Mod with: Fly-On Mod
And finally install Greenify for better RAM management.
And you are good for a very long time!!

Hi guys great topic, i'm deeply interested.
A friend of mine gave me her i9000 to "repair" because it was laggy as hell.
I tried few roms last week with her criterions :
Not laggy for common tasks (almost no gaming) even with few widgets on home screen
Good battery life is a plus
I first tried some JB rom (C-Rom, SuperNexus) great experience but they were laggy as hell with few apps installed (i had about 5sec lag between each action). I see that you guys recomment hellybean, would you feel that the smoothness would be better?
I did'nt try ICS roms as i see in the dev section that most of them are abandonned.
I finally tried a GB (JWB), the smoothness is better but i experience big lags on the calling apps (remake all my call multiple times when i finished it...). I guess the best option would be the GB smoothness without this laggy call app.
What would be your recommendations? more searching in the JB roms (hellybean etc.)? or trying CM7, or other GB stocks?
thanks in advance for your recommendations,
CM7 is great in performance - fastest ROM i've tried for i9000, but if no new features needed.
Using CM 10.2 for about a week and it feels good and have some battery-friendly features.
Better to make full wipe before installing any of 4+ roms

That's cool and all but I did a find (CTRL + F) on the page for kernel and it didn't really talk about what it is...
The kernel basically controls how the device runs. With custom kernels you often see more features (like wake gestures: being able to double tap 2 wake, sweep2wake, etc..., color control, and advanced CPU tweaking). Performance and battery life come from the kernel, not really the ROM. So with a custom kernel you can change the governor (how the CPU responds to load), touchboost or not (instantly ramping to a certain frequency when you touch the screen), hotplugs (when the CPU onlines/offlines cores), and frequencies (the min and max speeds at which the CPU runs at) among other features.
You can totally flash a kernel and just leave it as is and there is nothing wrong with that. Or you can install a program like kernel adiutor mod and adjust settings yourself and fine tune it based on how you use the device, how fast you want it to be, and how much battery life you want to have.
A kernel is literally the operating system itself. It manages all processes and hardware (ram, cpu, storage). Android is a GUI interface to the kernel. In this case for android the kernel is Linux. Linux uses modules to talk to hardware.
Windows uses the NT kernel. Macs use Darwin, based on BSD.

Take a look at this link..:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kernel_(operating_system)
You don't need to be a computer a engineer to understand the basics and it should give you an idea of what the kernel does on your device... Once you have read that, come back here if you need further informations...

The kernel literally operates the system. An embedded os is a kernel plus a few programs which run after init. An OS is nothing else but a kernel and some userland administrative tools.

When I hear the word "literally", I am hearing "exactly". So you said that the kernel is exactly the operating system, which would mean those words can be used interchangeably with each other and mean the same thing. They do not. When someone refers to an operating system, they are not referring to the kernel. And vice versa.

I think they are all good but this version -> https://forum.xda-developers.com/on...development/rom-resurrection-remix-m-t3399960
Is the best in my opinion.
1. most frequent updates.(currently even nightlies)
2. comes with ex kernel
3. is the only aosp/laos rom out there that doesnt throttle while playing moderncombat.
I tried all other aosp/laos roms, not only all rr roms. And they all start throttling while playing moderncombat even with the same ex kernel and kernel settings. The game simply starts lagging because the cpu clocks down. And the funny thing is the device doesnt even start heating.
I was almost sure that the official rr is better but i switched back to the custom version and was shocked that it never throttles while playing even when gpu boost is on "high". You can also set the kernel settings using akt app to get better battery life. But for me the battery is good enough.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 11 have a system SOC frequency limitation apps like Power keeper,Battery Management and Jyose limit 90 Hz and CPU+GPU freq on certain 3rd Party apps proced by /system/vendor/lib/gameoptimaization,adaplaunch,appsoptimaizationlibs not only that Xiaomi artificially limited CPU hispeed _freq on highspeed_load 85 both for A73 and A53 Cores rather then setting high_speed_load 75 for high speed frequency also the Boost frequency of CPU is limited to 1.73 GHz and 1.51 GHz rather then 2.40 GHz and 1.90 GHz even kernel force fast charge is set to zero.
(SO IT ELEMINATES ALL THE ABOVE MENTIONED ARTIFICIAL LIMITATION)
3. Enables High Performance Mode For aw87xx_SND_soc and Balanced the LR spks for indian MIUI users only
4.Enables Fast Charging.
5.Many more if u used u will know it better.
6.Bring back miui animation.
7.Set min clock-speed from 0.3 to 2.4 GHz on A73 and 0.3 to 1.9 GHz on A53 insted of 1.01 to 2.4 GHz on A73 and 1.1 to 1.9 GHz on A53
Note MIUI Camera, MIUI Gallery will be removed so use Gcam and Google Photos insted.
Flash both files via magisk reboot and enjoy
