Faulty microphone? - Samsung Galaxy S10 Questions & Answers

Has anybody had any issues with the bottom microphone on their S10 plus not working?
If I'm on a call the person on the other end can hardly hear me. If I hold the phone upside down and speak into the top mic or put the call on loudspeaker they can hear me fine.
I sent the phone to a Samsung authorized repair centre and they said the microphone was faulty but they wouldn't cover the repair because knox was tripped and they wanted me to pay for a new motherboard.
Has anyone had any similar issues or any success with changing the microphone?
TIA.

[Q] In call buzzing

Hi All,
I have recently purchased this phone and am very pleased with it.
The only issue I have is that in calls when the volume is turned all the way up the earpiece buzzes slightly.
Does anyone else have this issue?
thanks.
Nope, but from what you describe it sounds to me like there's contamination in the earpiece speaker, when the speakers membrane vibrates high enough, the contamination vibrates along and that could be the buzzing sound you hear... unless it's a different kind of buzzing... like continuous buzzing, is it?
The buzzing only occurs when the volume is turned up loud. It is as as if the speaker is loose and is vibrating inside the housing. Also occasionally when i make or answer a call the speaker doesn't work and there is no sound from the other caller.
I plan to return it to the store I bought it and try and get a replacement as surely this is faulty hardware?
It surely isn't a software issue, and unless you have a very poor signal while in call, there should be no reason to have a crappy (or absent) caller sound, other than the possibility I mentioned below, which sounds very likely... Hope they can fix or replace it for you
I contacted both motorola and Three UK (whom I purchased it from) and they both said it was not normal. I returned it to a Three store and got it replaced. The new one has no buzzing so i think its all sorted.
So i have had the replacement for nearly 2 weeks now and the issue has started again. there is a buzzing when in call. it varies with the pitch of the other callers voice but it sounds like there's a bee stuck in the earpiece or the speaker itself is loose and is vibrating.
Im not rough with the phone at all and most of the time it sits on my desk at work.
apparently there is a similar issue with the RAZR M in the U.S
surely I cant be unlucky enough to be the only one in the UK to have this issue and to have it twice....

Secondary Microphone not working?

Just got a S6 yay!! When I was at AT&T the stupid rep put the ejector tool in the upper secondary mic instead of the sim slot. I didn't think much of it now because when block the lower mic by the speaker to make a call, say okay google, or do a voice memo no sound is transmitted or nothing happens
is the upper second mic just for noise cancellation or did the rep break my mic? anyway anyone can test this to validate?
Much appreciated
I wouldn't even wonder about it. Take it back and exchange it. AoN
Covered up bottom mic and get very faint recording, if any at all. I'm guessing the top mic is for noise cancelation.

Thank you for the reply jondroid2
went back to B&H and got a replacement. Second unit has the same issue. This is the international unlocked SM-G920F. Funny thing went to the Samsung store in Best Buy and the S6 and Edge don't have this problem.

The same thing happened to a friend of mine, but his phone was under warranty and, indeed, his motherboard was replaced. After about a year it happened again and he sent it back for repair. My friend suspects it happened because of the strong electromagnetic fields at work ... Fortunately, everything was repaired for free under warranty.

How they know Knox was tripped? Did you flash your stock rom before you took for repair?

I did but once knox is tripped there's no way of hiding it.
Once they put it into download mode they'll see it's been rooted at some stage.
Did you try to replace mic? I have noticed my mic has a low volume only during phonecalls. When I record video it's normal.

Question Zenfone 8 problems with speakerphone during phone calls

Hi,
Has anyone have such problem with speakerphone during phone (or whatsapp/viber etc) call that
All MIC's passes tests OK, record and then play my voice very well and loud.
But when I call someone or someone call to me and I active speakerphone to put phone away from my ear - there are mess like echoes, some robotic voice like signal excitation and interference started each time for person on the other end of the line. Person hears himself more often than my voice. So it's impossible to talk normally on speakerphone. I hear companion very good, but for him it's mess. But if I deactivate speaker and use earphone (in front of my ear) - then everything is ok for me and person on the line.
Does anyone know what could be wrong? Problem persists on each FW which means that problem is hardware. I checked all mics in ,12345+= test utility. Every single microphone is ok. But it seems that when they work together - sometihng is going wrong. There are 3 mic's in this phone. First one is located on board 90AI0060-R10010 (bottom left corner), and this part can be replaced, it doesn't cost an arm and a leg. Second one is located in top upper part on main board and it looks like it can only be repaced by replacing motherboard which is cost a lot of $$$ which is not acceptable for devices not covered by warranty anymore (unlocked BL). Third mic installed on board 90AI0060-R10020 under back cover (where rear camera is located) and also can be replaced, price about 10USD.
But where is controller/unit which operate by these mic's?
Is there anyone who has or had such problem? What part(-s) were replaced is service under warranty?
Hi
I hat similar problems. I tried a lot of adjustments at the apps and the phone. Set the phone to factory settings. Nothing helped. Even the upgrade to Android 12 didn't change anything. Finally I sent it for warranty repair to Asus workshop and now I am waiting to get it back. Hopefully tomorrow I can tell you the result.

Ok, please also let me know (if possible) what part(-s) will be replaced.
There are 3 microphones in our phone. And I guess two of them are operate during phone calls on speaker. Main mic on sub-board which is located at the bottom of phone and second one - noise-canselling MIC which is located on motherboard (top part of phone).
Hi, today I've got it back. The workshop protocol says they made a firmware reset (same I already did before and told them). And the result is, the fault is still the same. This was second time I sent it for repair. First time the WLAN module broke down. They changed the motherboard and after getting it back from the asus workshop the the speakerphone function didn't work any more. You can see, there are absolutely specialist at work.

Hi,
I am using S21 Ultra Snapdragon version. I am having issue with my microphone which is adjacent to charger plug. It only works when i put my mouth real close to it or at straight plane. During voice call, the person receiving my call complains of hearing voice in fluctuating volume (sometimes loud sometimes small in seconds). I am on latest firmware. I have already tried cleaning my the hole of microphone. Please help.

If a factory reset doesn't help, it could be a microphone hardware issue. Better to take it to the service centre and get it checked out. Somethings can't be fixed with a software solution
Thank you for your reply. I had tried factory reset but no help.
This phone was left as a gift to me and unfortunately, in my country, the official service center doesnt repair phones from abroad. Also, I had shown this to four technicians. One said its likely software because if mic was damaged it wouldnt receive any noise. Remaining had said it was hardware issue and all of their answers were different.(problem in microphone, problem in IC). Thus, Im quite reluctant to send them for repair.
Could you please help regarding possible faulty hardware. The problem is my phone sends fluctuating volumed voice during call either from sim or messenger.
Thank you
@Qhycliss1: Just interested to know: does the same symptoms occur when you make a voice recording? Eg with the samsung native voice recording app?
That may (or not) exclude microphone HW issues.
Hi and thank you for your reply.
While using official voice recorder, if i keep my mouth near the lower microphone then the voice is excellent. However, if i deviate my mouth by creating an angle (if i face the screen and record) the volume in recording decreases but still i can hear recording.
Of note, when I try loopback test (*#0283#), the rcv_1st mic has muffled sound but when i arch my hand to direct sound from mouth to mic) it is clear. I dont know if this is of any help.

Sounds like a defective microphone to me. Sorry I can't think of a software solution to help.
If I was in your situation and repair was not an option, I'd probably end up use USB headset with mic or Bluetooth earphones for calls. It's not ideal, but don't know what else to suggest.
