Bluetooth headphones not working for calls - Redmi Note 9 Questions & Answers

Purchased Xiaomi Note 9 (not pro or any other varient) which is running the MIUI 12 (12.0.3 stable global version). I immediately encountered an issue with the Bluetooth: I own a Sennheiser PXC 550 (original first version) headset. it connects and plays music and audio without issues until I try to make a call. when I try to call I get the following behavior: when the active noise cancelation is off' the call screen displays the audio source on the call screen as the Bluetooth but no sound or mic comes through. when the noise cancelation is set to active on the headset, the call screen shows the phone rapidly switching between audio sources from the speaker back to the headset. sometimes something goes wrong and the headset stops playing audio after the call and won't play youtube videos until I turn off the headset. I suspect its a software issue. maybe has something to do with how the phone connects to the headset mic or interacts with it. the headset is working with my older Mi Mix 2, Mi 9 (running MIUI 12.0.2), other phones, and devices including smart TVs, etc. other headsets do work.
Things I tried: enabling developer options and changing
1) A2DP to off
2) changing the AVRCP settings
3) rebooting
4) updating the firmware from 11 to 12 (automatically)
5) factory reset
6) Bluetooth cash wipe
7) connection data wipe and reset
8) other call apps
9) changing other Bluetooth settings like codecs etc
10) the problem still excited before the update from MIUI 11 to 12
11) I did make sure that in Bluetooth settings the options to control calls and media were turned on and all permissions granted.
Note, the phone wont allow to turn off A2DP hardware acceleration. the slider jumps back to on and prompts a restart.
talking to Xiaomi support didn't solve the issue. sometimes the headset loses media controls like forword' pause etc.
any ideashow to solve the issue?

Does it works with another Bluetooth Headphones?

unfortunately no, it seems it has something to do with the hardware. i have another set of headphones Jabra 65T and they do work. also the original pair works (PXC 550) but only for media controls and even then sometimes youtube won't respond. the only way I see ut of this is to change the phone or headphones.

Call connected - no sound in bluetooth headset or android auto

Hi all,
I was wondering if somebody could help me with my 3T.
I've noticed that when I use my bluetooth headset or when connected to the car, no sound is there when trying to make calls or receive calls. The call appears but when i answer no sound.
However, media audio works perfectly fine. Phone audio and media audio are both selected in the paired bluetooth settings.
I thought there must be something wrong with the rom I was using which was omni. I have reflashed OOS 5.0.1 but I have the same problem.
I started using Android auto in the car hoping call sound would come through as it is connected by usb. The same issue occurs. Media audio is fine. No call sound.
I have tried unpairing and pairing bluetooth devices to see if this works. Also uninstalled android auto and reinstalled.
I have tried a Galaxy S9 with android auto and the Bluetooth devices to see if the problem occurred on the S9 but everything worked perfectly.
Anyone come across this before?
Solution?

have you solved your problem? you have found a solution
Having the Same problem with my one since 5.0.8 try everything i.e changing rom going back to stock even older version of android but no luck.
I had no mic during the call with wireless bullets. I think it was solved it by changing bluetooth settings in degveloper options.
bluetooth audio mode to mono, codec - SBC and other bitrates and enabled absolute volume .
Or you just have low volume in the call, which can be increased only during the call

P20 Pro - poor audio quality on in-car phone system

Hi there,
I replaced my HTC 10 with the P20 Pro and since then i have really poor audio quality when using my hands-free phone system over bluetooth in my car (Mercedes). The quality was good with the HTC and turned bad with the Huawei. I looked up the settings in the developer menu and saw that the BT coded that is used is SBC. When i turn off Bluetooth on the mobile, i am able to select a different codec but as soon as i turn on BT again, SBC is selected automatically again in the menu. Is there anything i can do to permanently select another codec such as aac or aptx? On my HTC, the option for following the "standard setting" is preselected.
facing the same issue with my Ford Focus. Sound is cracking, and the only way to fix it (temporarly) is to reset the connection and made new one. but only works for a few days, then it returns....
Also waiting for a fix, and even in the latest firmware version Cl20C432131 .
Nissan Note 2012
Same problem in my Nissan. I don't know what codec my old galaxy s7 used but the drop in quality when switching to P20 pro was huge. I also cannot permanently change the codec settings. This is a deal breaker.
You should remember that there is 2 ways bluetooth working with sending audio - in handset way (low quality but allows microphone input) and in headphone way (normal quality but no mic input).
Exactly the same issue as me in my Audi. I don't know if I'm glad other people have this issue but at least i know it isn't just me or a fault with my car haha!
People the other end seem to hear me fine. Its not practical to keep connecting and disconnecting each time i want to make a call in the car.

Interesting, I'm using android auto and I believe it switches between these modes automatically. With my old Galaxy S7 I could hear a real downgrade in audio quality when the phone was responding to my voice prompts. On the P20 Pro, the voice prompt responses seem much higher quality than the previous phone but the music is much lower quality - as if it is only using a single mode.
I'm not sure about 'no mic input' though, both phones could can hear voice prompts over the music (as long as I shout!)
Nevertheless I will test with google music only and disable android auto and will report back.
(for me the music quality is always poor even after reconnecting - it does not sound like it is coming over the voice channel, it is more subtle a difference than that)

Thanks, I tried this and it had no effect on sound quality, but......
I need to confess a stupid oversight. It turns out that my Google Music settings specified 'Normal' quality over mobile network. I set this to 'Always High' and restored the original quality of music that I was used to.
So it seems that:-
My car has always used SBC at 44.1 KHz 16bit
Even with this low fidelity Bluetooth connection, it is still possible to distinguish Normal and High quality modes of Google Music.

Sound problems while playing PUBG Mobile

I have encountered a weird problem specifically related to PUBG. When I start the app, it sometimes, randomly routs the audio to phones main speakers (the speaker primarily used for calls). Sometimes, it routs the audio through the loudspeaker even while I have connected a wired headset through adapter provided in the box.
When I connect a Bluetooth headset before starting the game, it plays extremely downgraded sound through the headset or simply uses the primary speaker (as above) as sound output, totally ignoring the bluetooth headset. Whenever this kind of problem occurs, restarting the device solves it, but on a later stage it comes back. Other applications like youtube and Google Play Music behaves as they should with all the three sound output options (Loud Speaker, Wired Headset and Bluetooth Headset). The problem occurs only with PUBG Mobile. Can anyone please provide a solution to this?

Encountered the same problem with Bluetooth headset and I fixed it by -
1) Going to world chat.
2) Pressing the voice message button for a few seconds.
3) sound stops coming for a second .
4) You get perfect quality audio after that.
PS - It only happens for me using Bluetooth headphones, not in my earbuds. And never tried phone loudspeakers while playing the game.
Actually what happens is, when the game starts, for some odd reason, your phone thinks you're receiving a call and acts accordingly. If you use any of the mic actions in the game for a second, it fixes it.

That's my concern. Do other phones also have this issue or just Mi A2 has it?

Bluetooth call issues

I am having issues when I am connecting my k20 pro with my car's Bluetooth for answering phone calls. The Bluetooth gets connected and music plays using Bluetooth without any issues, but the call volume output doesn't come from the Bluetooth. Has anyone else face this issue?

Have you installed a custom ROM, or are you on official MIUI?
I know in call Bluetooth audio doesn't work on GSI ROMs.
I am on official miui rom

I've not seen anyone else complain of this on official MIUI. Have you tried other Bluetooth devices like headsets?
I never stuck with MIUI long enough to try Bluetooth, so there's not much I can suggest.

I haven't tried with any other blue tooth device yet. Let me try it out.
Bluetooth sound breaks continuously while playing audio in car
When i connect my k20 pro using Bluetooth to my car audio, the music breaks continuously, i have tried with other phones but the problem is only seen in this k20 pro, i tried it in another car audio system same problem
I have also the same issue... Problem is with K20 pro.... Reset 2 times but still the problem is not resolved... Most annoying thing that Mi service center can do only Hard Reset as first and last solution...
I have no issues with the audio, issue happened only with the call functions. I suspect it to be a compatibility issue with my car. Since k20 pro has Bluetooth 5g, however my car doesn't have this.

Bluetooth is backward compatible. Like if you have a capable device, it will use all the features the host supports.
One tip: If you go into Developer Settings on your phone, you can hard-set the Bluetooth settings.

Is the issue reported by you above connected to the Bluetooth issue of this thread?

I'm having the same issue, the audio comes from the loud speaker of the phone.
On the screen on the phone you can see that the audio is connected to the car Bluetooth, you can then select loudspeaker or normal audio , if you swap the audio to a different channel and then revert back to the car Bluetooth it is connecting correctly to the Bluetooth
I am having the same issue
I have redmi k20... Over Bluetooth music is fine, but over call the person can't hear you...
I tried everything.... Restarting my phone, pair unpair Bluetooth, even hard reset my phone... It started working for 2 calls after hard reset but it is again causing problrms
same problem here.
when I connect my K20 to my car via BT, music breaks after 2-3 songs, and car controls (next song/previous song) stop working.
also, when I connect my BT Bose headphones, sometimes sound does not come through (mic works)
anyone found a solution?

That sounds more like a battery optimization issue. Try turning off battery optimization AND set App battery saver to "no restrictions" for your music player.
I had the same issue with Xiaomi Redmi 9
Hard reset solved it.

[HELP] Can't hear phone calls on bluetooth

Hello,
As title says suddenly I can't hear anything through my car BT (Audi) or BT headphones. It was working fine till around a week ago.
I can hear media\music just fine (for example Spotify) in both headphones and car speakers.
Bluetooth is connected correctly as usual, but I can't hear people in calls and they can't hear me too.
In car I can normally start a call with steering wheel buttons, just I don't hear anything. If I change audio output on phone to speaker or phone I ear them, if I rechange to BT silent again.
I tried another phone in my car and it's working fine.
I tried my phone in another car and same problem occurs, so it's some setting in my phone (even if I don't remember changing anything since it was working).
I'm on stock OOS 9.0.5 + Magisk.
Things I've tried by googling A LOT of forums:
1) Resetting network\BT data from Settings>Reset
2) Clearing storage and cache for the Bluetooth system app
3) Manually deleting paired devices from both my car and my phone and re-add them.
4) Played with the BT audio codec\bitrate\version\etc options in developers menu without luck.
5) Tried disabling google now, ok google feature.
6) Tried disabling device discovery for Bluetooth.
Things I take as last chance: changing kernel, clean flash.
Any suggestions?
