Is your Pixel 5 able to access 4G Network? - Google Pixel 5 Questions & Answers

It seems my Pixel 5 (unlocked) is stuck between LTE and 5G. Well, LTE most of the time and occasionally 5G when around town.
If I understand correctly, P5 is backward compatible with 4G, but it never picks up 4G signal even when I am at my home where my P4XL would always have 4 bars for 4G.
Oh, and I am on Verizon, and not rooted, yet.
Trying to see if anybody else is in the same boat. Maybe I have a bad unit?

While there are differences in definition, LTE is essentially 4G. Often it's just a marketing thing which of these two terms gets chosen. Even though there are technical differences ("true 4G" would be LTE advanced, as default LTE only supports up to 300 mbit/s while the 4G standard allows gigabit speeds), practically it's okay to simplify that 4G = LTE. When being technically correct, however, LTE would only be "3.9G".
Maybe Google shows 4G as LTE for simplicity reasons?

There is LTE and LTE+ shown on my Pixel 5 depending on the type of connection i have at that moment, but it was allways this way at least in europe (Germany) 4G= LTE (up to 300mb/s) and 4G+=LTE+ (300mb/s+)

Correct, it has been the same for me. LTE+ is equivalent to the above mentioned LTE advanced, which usually works through carrier aggregation. I've yet to see "4G" display on my notification bar. I believe it also depends on the carrier and their network protocols whether the phone recognizes the connection as 4G or LTE.

I get 4G all the time.

o2 Germany, but as far as i know LTE is the technology behind 4g. While 4g defines the Speed an Connection Standards but no device ever reaches that speed. So its more a carrier decision like someone Said above. LTE is needed for 4g anyways. I Hope that makes any sense

On AT&T in the states, and my phone shows 5GE which is basically LTE Enhanced, not true 5G.

Thank you for the response. Initially I thought the same. However, the speed I get when it shows LTE, is much much slower than I was getting when my P4XL was on 4G. Which is why I am curious.
I guess, if Google showing 4G as LTE for simplicity, then it means that this phone's reception is worse in comparison to P4XL.
If that is not the case, and it should connect to 4G network and should show as 4G, then I have a faulty device.
I guess will see as more people gets the phone in hand.

Im using DSDS and both Sims are getting LTE

LTE is the industry standard implementation of 4G. As an aside, most LTE implementations don't meet the ITU standard for 4G, but to the end user, LTE is 4G. Current 5G NR FR1 implementations share radio space with legacy 4G LTE, often on the same equipment.

Rogers Ottawa LTE speeds

I'm in Ottawa and my speeds are a little wacky. The first night I had LTE service I hit 40mbps, bit now its steady around 16-18 or so.
Should i expect my most recent tests or should i be looking for higher than that?

Were in Ottawa are you? Im in Kanata and have yet to see lte speeds. im in an ongoing battle with rogers to get lte here. they told me were there towers were in Kanata i went there and nada. i know hunt club and merivale is a strong signal as is baseline and woodroff were their flagship store is. I have gotten decent speeds here and there but i dont believe there network is even half functional. i bought my phone in Toronto in oct and the lte speeds were pretty consistent and coverage was fairly accurate in terms of their coverage map.
First they said my device was defective even though it worked fine in Toronto. So i bought a sierra wireless lte modem and had the same results to prove to them it wasnt a device issue. then i drove to there towers with google maps on my screen to show them my position and the fact that my phone was in edge and sometime 3g at best and emailed rogers tech support pics as well.
There supposed to send a tech out again tomorow but at this point im not very optimistic.
As you can see in the pic when lte works its great the speeds there are from toronto and 2 are from ottawa, just not anywhere near me lol, other pics are of my position less than 100 meters from the towers and you can see the network its on 4g if lucky otherwise edge (tower is corner of campeau and teron other one is castlefrank and 417)
Also do you have issues with the phone when it tries to switch between 4g and lte?
I live in sandy hill and work downtown. I hit 4g downtown but 90% of the time I'm on LTE at home which is pointless as I have WiFi.
Sent from my HTC-X710a using XDA App
i haven't really noticed anything when they switch, but i'm not really aware of when it does.
what i have noticed is that when i'm on LTE my signal kinda dwindles, but its not unusable. its actually more functional than with full strength on 4g.
So I figured out why I was getting such low speeds on my tests. I was running off a Montreal server so it was skewing my results.
After using the Ottawa server my results improved drastically. The top 3 are after I switched to the Ottawa network.
I am impress.
LTE for the win.

Im in the same boat, for some reason speedtest and alot of other cell signal apps put me in montreal as my location when trying to figure out my location via cell signal. funny thing is it only happens when in lte, wonder if this is some sort of bug? when i change it to ottawa speed def picks up.
Also rogers is having issues with their lte they gave me 50%off my bill for 6 months so i pay 25$ for 10 gb and 25$ for my north america unlimited plan, may be worth calling in for you as well
AT&T LTE is about on par with your LTE speeds, cept I haven't managed to get more then 2 bars on LTE.
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using xda premium
I haven't noticed any signal loss or poor call quality so overall I'm impressed so far, other than it nit picking up my LTE in downtown Ottawa. Maybe I'll call rogers after all haha

I've found online that there's a setting the mobile network section to set it to LTE auto. After turning that on I haven't had an issue with my LTE network signal other than it dropping in my office building, but even then it still manages to pump out 15-20meg or so.

Sprint reception is awful

i just upgraded from the evo 3d 4g isnt available in my area im in Monterey county but i was exacting the same speeds that i was getting with the evo 3d but this is just ridiculous, maybe i got a faulty radios with this device because my evo 3d was never this slow or is there something with the setting i can change to make it better i was really amped up to get this phone but at this point i am disappointed and want to return it
Try updating the PRL and Profile.
I have the exact opposite experience coming from the Nexus S 4G. S4 seems to receive the 3G signal better, and I am very pleased with the LTE coverage so far. I am in Minneapolis, so YMMV...

Your local tower/site might be being upgraded to LTE. If so, you should expect some down time. My site literally went offline for a few days (100% roaming on Verizon) until they finished whatever upgrade they were doing. Got LTE about a week later. But as stated, your mileage may vary.

My S4 is the same speed on 3g as my Evo 4G LTE and as our S3. I used Speedtest to verify. I'd take the phone into a Sprint store and run Speedtest on it compared to their display model. Turn wireless off on both phones first, of course.

If you don't have upgraded towers, your service should remain the same. If not, I would suggest you get your new phone looked at since it's still under warranty.

I'm coming from a Nexus S 4G too and this phone has so much better reception, especially wifi. Don't really get LTE that often though, which is kind of disappointing because I actually had pretty good WiMAX coverage. But I know LTE coverage will only get better with time.
Signal != Data speed. If your signal is good but your data speed is slow, it's most likely that the sector is overloaded or the site is currently backhaul limited. It sounds like the site you connect to hasn't had Network Vision upgrades yet. Go familiarize yourself with Network Vision over at s4gru.com.
Call sprint before you return it. I had the same thing. I had great signal with my HTC Evo 3d and when I switched to the S4, I was dropping calls like crazy and with 1 bar or no signal. Found out that they were updating the towers and I also have 4g in my area now. Woot!

That is very weird... Mine clearly shows Verizon Wireless
Have you ever used a AT&T SIM (AT&T, Go Phone, Straight Talk, Aio Wireless, etc) in your phone?
Is there Verizon 4G/LTE in your area? If you install and try Network Signal Info does it show Verizon or AT&T and what type of signal?
Completely stock?

Weird... Try going to Settings->Tethering & Networks->Mobile Networks and make sure Global data roaming is off, System Select is LTE/CDMA, and Access Point Names is set to VZWINTERNET... If that doesn't work, I would take it in to the local Verizon store, this is not normal and could be an indication that your EFS partition is corrupted.

AT&T in your area must have band 4 AWS lte just like Verizon has thus it works. I would try this if AT&T actually had lte in my area, but they do not yet, strictly a pcs carrier here, besides lte.
Yea I was a little weird looking at my phone and seeing the LTE and checking the speeds and getting about 3x faster then HSPA+.

How is yours even like that?
How did you get it to look like that? My Verizon g2 won't even show 3g or 4g. It only shows H. Did you flash your phone? If you didn't have 4g LTE, would it show an H?

Yes... H means HSPA(+) that's what you get when your on high speed (non-LTE) data on GSM. A VZW G2 will only get LTE on AT&T in about 13 markets in the US as that is the only places they have Band 4 LTE, I don't remember them all but Google can fetch a list of them pretty quick I'm sure.

If you refer to my post, my point was only that there's a little app that shows the Android service menu. The band is indicated (mine says HSPA - my contract doesn't allow LTE, so I can't say anything about that).

that app your referring to is the same menu as going into *#*#4636#*#*
also, HSPA, LTE, GSM, etc is not the band type, its a network type.. by Band type I mean LTE: Bands: 1/3/4/7/17/38/40, which is also another way to describe radio frequency
as you can see in the first pic of my first post, in the Samsung device, it shows Band 4
but my question was for mindblizzard,

That's all fine and dandy, but it's not like your carrier is operating multiple frequencies that you're likely to see ever. Maybe if you live in an incredibly dense population center, but even then... Perhaps I'm missing something.

Fair enough, if you have LTE already, and they are simply deploying a new frequency, you likely won't notice any change, to any of the service. Speeds don't increase between bands, the only reason a carrier deploys a new band, is to fight radio interference from other carriers. Given the cost of a single radio, carriers generally only deploy these new radios in VERY congested areas. Meaning, that in a city that has, say 15 towers, 2-3 of them would actually get the upgrade, in the area that suffers from the most interference. (You have to bear in mind, that a full tower build, requires 6 radios, each radio costing about $18,000 for the radio, another $1000 for the antenna, another $500-1500 for the power supply and cabling. They don't just "upgrade" an entire area, it takes too long to recoup costs)

Ah my mistake, i had in my head he meant to check for bands in the area which he can use with the 'unlocked' frequency mod..for some reason. My total mistake!
However what i meant with what i said when i get my 4g is that i can confirm that the unlock mod will enable band 20 since our OPO is restricted/doesnt support it by default. The band app would be good though!

International SM-N950F/DS internet speed is very slow on Tmobile LTE

Hello,
I'm not even sure if the phone connect to Tmobile LTE bands, but according to the spec sheet, the phone does have all the Tmobile LTE bands (2,4,12). But I only get about 4~6Mbps download and 1~2 Mbps upload speed running speedtest.
Anything I can do to improve the speed? I already create a new APN and tried with different settings like IPv4/IPv6 and IPv4 alone.
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Anyone ?? No one has the same issue as me? I also flashed the AQI4 latest firmware with AQI4 baseband and things seem a bit better, but still very slow.
Probably need to flash a T-Mobile CSC and we might need to call them and have them provision something with our IMEI as well. My N950N has the same slow issue as you, but I noticed if I insert the SIM, for a few minutes the data speed will be very fast, then suddenly just drops to garbage slow.
Also wondering if perhaps there's a physical issue with some of these. My signal strength and download speeds are garbage again (thought that they were fixed by restoring the stock EFS partition but I appear to have made a mistake).
Testing at my house now next to my Note 5, the Note 8's signal strength bounced between 9-15 dBm worse than the Note 5 (it's signal strength varied by at most 1 dBm), same LTE band and running multiple speed tests concurrently and separately the Note 5 was averaging 100mbps down (testing on the same server for consistency) where the 8 was anywhere between about 16 Mbps to 35.5 Mbps again on the same server.
This is on complete bone stock factory flash with Odin.
Another oddity is that the upload speed was higher on average on the 8, it was 1-5 Mbps higher than on the Note 5 even though the 5 is destroying it in download speeds.
I am really starting to suspect a loose antenna wire.
I have the F/DS Singapore variant on t mobile. Signal strength is great so far and getting 4G+.

In my case it turned out that my usb/antenna/mic/speaker circuit board kind of died after about 1 week - that is why my LTE signal and speeds suddenly dropped. When it was working properly I was able to get download speeds between 100-200+ Mbps, in an area with signal strength approximately -75 dBA, but now in the same area it only gets about -95 to -100 dBA and I'm lucky to get 20 or 30 Mbps. Waiting for replacement parts to become available so I can replace the faulty board.
Also apparently a lot of these are having issues as many people are reporting some or all of the issues related to the components on that board (slow/poor LTE, mic issues, etc).
