It's not much faster and will drain 20% less battery. Good luck with that.
Hum, I just flash the Verizon specific November update. I don't exactly see extra 5G option in the cell data network settings. The preferred network type is still
Global
LTE/CDMA
LTE/GSM/UMTS
I'm on Global.

You won't see anything different from that, leave it on Global. There is no 5g option.
I get about 75mbps down, 45mbps upload with 5g. about double of LTE. but you have to have clear signal, I live in a mountainous area so its not consistent
I was getting 100-130Mbs down and 20Mbs up 2 weeks ago when I go out to a region I know have better cell reception than my house. I just updated the Verizon specific and getting 46Mbs down and 16.8Mbs up. Last week it was 84.9Mbs down and 22.9 Mbs up. So my area is somewhat inconsistent in terms of speed.
Inside my house I get about 81mbps down and 5 up. I'm about a mile from the nearest tower but I'm not sure why my upload speed suffers so much.
If I do not have a 5g plan with Verizon, do I need to do something specific to disable 5g on my phone? I keep reading things about it hurting battery life and if I don't even have the service I'd like to disable it if posisble.

Ok, thank you. I just wasn't sure if I had to do something to disable the radio itself from trying to search for signal. I guess in hindsight that was a dumb question.

No not dumb at all. I was under a false impression as well that I would just get it but then I found out first, I needed a 5G sim, (still not sure about that one) but when I looked on my plan it was an older 4G plan and I had to pay an extra $5 to get on the 5G Nationwide plan along with the high octane 5G which is not even close to where I live. Not sure about battery drain yet but I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Uhhh, no. Since 5g is included with all new plans then the OP very possibly does have it. If they want to disable it they would need to go into network settings and change the network type from Global to LTE.

That's normal, even Verizon says that it won't be much faster and in some areas it will actually be slower than LTE. Their 5g is a work in progress. The only real 5g speed you'd see would be if you're in one of the select cities that offer UWB and you're sitting under the antenna.
Interesting, I have no 5G plan but still get a 5G icon. I suspect they are lying. Network Signal Info reports it using the AWS-3 LTE band.

Ok, so the other day I visited an AT&T store, and while I was there I got talking with one of the reps there. We were talking about flashing different ROMS and such, when he showed me his phone. He was running a custom rom that he cooked up in the romkitchen. He then showed me his speedtest.net scores and they were off the charts! He was getting something like 9 Mbps down, and 30 Mbps upload speed! He tried to explain to me how he had done this, off the record of course, but I haven't been able to figure it out! If there is anyone out there who can help out an aspiring noob, I would really appreciate it!
its called HSPA (aka HSPUA and HSPDA for upload and download)
They probably also have a signal repeater or a microcell in the store too increase performance
yeah tricky a-holes... "see how good att reception is? ..... (in our store) "
Interesting, so I guess to simplify, captivate is still unable to access what AT&T calls "4G"? Also how would one know if they were accessing HSPA?

The captivate us capable of hspa it just needs to be flashed to a different modem.bin that supports it
The signal icon at the top will say H instead of 3g.
As for 4g that will never work.

How much experience do you have with at&t as a provider? Or are you just regurgitating what you have read. Every carrier has their issues but you seem to have some deep seeded hatred for at&t.
@op, the captivate will connect to hsdpa just fine but the speeds the rep was getting are not possible.

well their prices(AT&T) are still higher than the other providers. unlimited data plans for $20-$30 when at AT&T you only get so much but get unlimited when on wifi....then again wifi isnt everywhere. i myself have almost the lowest plan with one of the lowest data plans and still pay almost $100 a month!....just sayin
Hey I appreciate all the input regarding my question, ive done quite a bit of reading on this forum lately and am learning a lot! So I guess my next question would be, what kind of speedtest.net scores would one get if connected to HSPA?
HSPA that Att is deploying currently is limited to 14.4Mbps. Real world speeds up to ~12Mbps. The captivate does NOT have HSPA, only 7.2Mbps HSDPA.

Wireless network speeds depend on a number of variables. If you see the H, it just means the software is turned on in the tower you are connecting to. The faster speeds are dependent on whether or not there is expanded backhaul (fiber from the tower into the network) in your area. Until that's added, you won't see speeds above what you get from 3G. Of course geography, your location, number of people connecting to your tower, etc... also play a role.
Hi,
I bought the mentioned model online and using FIDO sim Card. I have moved from Canadian S8+. Note 8 shows data connection as "4G" (as against LTE of S8+) and I am getting 4 signal bars instead of 5. I am not noticing any signal drops or slow internet speeds though. I am just wondering if this is something i need to worry about. I still have the option to return the phone. If this is a serious issue, I would rather return the phone and buy a Canadian model. Thanks in advance for the help!

Hi, I think some (or maybe all?) of the international models simply show the 4G icon instead of the usual LTE icon that we're used to. Someone could correct me if I'm wrong but I think it's normal.
For the reception: could it just be 4 bars due to your location, or has it been consistently lower than expected in different places too? If it's persisting then you could check which bands are supported on that model versus the ones used by Fido. Might just be bad reception in your area too...hard to say.
True 4G on INT models is same as LTE. Im using same phone and network, no issues.
Can second this.
Ask your Carrier to confirm your IMEI on their end and refresh (provision) your SIM.
Before I only received 4G on my Exynos but after the refresh, I now get 4G+.

good to know that.thanks! looks like the 4g/lte icon issue is more of a cosmetic thing but doesnt really effect data speeds.
However, I am very sure signal bars a consistently lower than S8+. I hardly see Note 8 getting all bars unless I am out on roads, not the case with S8. how about you?

yeah the bars are consistently low but didn't notice any drop in quality. Funny thing is only after getting this phone I realized how rarely we use these devices for actual phone calls anymore! I should note, and I failed too, that I do receive 4G+ but usually in larger areas. I live in a small city of 15, 000 and sometimes catch 4G+. If I'm in a much denser populous, I always get 4G+ (except when I'm on a call; it switches to 3G or HSPA depending on which SIM is in).
Case in point, was in Toronto this past weekend and had 4G+ all weekend long.

Hello Im pretty new with samsung devices. I like my device to be rooted so i bought the SM-N960D/Dual Sim Exynos (BRI,BRI,BRI,BRI)
I Noticed that my wides T mobile US snapdragon Note 9 signal is fantastic and also she gets LTE but with mine I don't get LTE and my signal is bad..
So it looks like the N960D is missing a bunch of bands that T-Mobile uses for LTE. It has bands 2 and 4 for sure, but it may or may not have band 12 (conflicting google info), and doesn't have band 66 or 71. This is the cause of your signal woes, and can't be fixed. It either has the bands, or it doesn't.

Based on most of the stuff I see online, the N960F / D does indeed have band 66 and 71.

I also tried looking it up at the Samsung.cn and Samsung.jp sites, but not knowing where the phone originated from, I can't get an accurate idea of what it has or doesn't have.

So 2, 4 and 12, MAYBE 66, no 71? Yeah, 66 is huge for T-Mobile now. 71 is going to be a big deal towards the end of this year.

How about banking apps and work e-mail, considering they use device management. Have you faced an issues with that?

Frequency check is usually accurate, but, they got it wrong,or,just haven't got around to entering the correct information in this instance.
Check the Samsung sites in the countries that are known to sell/use the Exynos models & you'll get an accurate listing of 2G/3G/4G LTE Bands on-board.

Hi all,
I have the pro here in the UK.
My wife also has a p20 pro on EE UK.
In the past I've been able to obtain very high speeds at home, 250Mb + was the average.
Nowadays I seem to be capped at 90Mb down and 30Mb up.
My wife, sat next to me with the same phone and network can obtain the 250Mb down and 70Mb up like I used to.
EE says they don't know, I've swapped the SIM, flashed other ROMs? Same thing.
Any idea?
APN is correct
Location is identical to what it was before.
Signal appears maxed out.
LTE is allowed.
ROM makes no difference, EMUI, AOSIP, lineage.
Have not installed pie.
Bootloader unlocked but it was the same when at stock..
All subsequent firmwares have had the same issue.
Getting a bit annoyed with it tbh, if it's EE I can't really complain, I am getting 89-90Mb solid, but obviously not what I should be getting compared to my wife.
Just guessing - but is one of you on a max plan, and the other on essential?
Depends on the tariff I think. EE Max plans are granted higher speeds than EE essential plans.

Well this is what I thought, but I've been assured that it's not the case and that we should both be getting the same speeds. I need to call them back so will at some point.
I have a high end contract so should be getting the max speeds.
Capped at 90Mb does seem like it's the case.

Ok so turns out after speaking with a nice chap at EE for about an hour, after a SIM swap, after talking to two of his colleagues.
He found a setting for faster 4G, something which I've always had.
It was disabled for around 1 year by all accounts, with no accountability from EE.
Anyway, for this feature to be available even though I was never advised that it was disabled / enabled or was even an extra, it would cost £2 extra per month on top of my contact.
The chap I spoke with got it added for free. Probably because I'd been paying for it and not been getting speeds.
The second he turned it on a speed test on Ookla showed speeds of 200Mb.
Anyway, just thought I'd share.
Happy now.
Yep I'll take that
Good times.
Second screen shot shows the previous results never breaching 90Mb down 30Mb up.

5Ge is att's fake as hell 5G. Its basically LTE, thats why tmobile and spring have been making fun of att. I live in Orlando and get the little 5Ge icon as well.

My phone now shows 5Ge this is not true 5G its just a bit faster then 4G LTE. That why sprint is sueing At&t for misleading its customers. Its pretty simple 5G is not a software update its an actual technology inside the phone and no phone is out atm with 5G antenas.

In some markets AT&T is changing the 4G LTE signal display to show 5Ge instead. It will be on compatible phones in markets where they have deployed 4x4 MIMO, 256 QAM and other advanced LTE network technologies.
It also makes them look like they are leading the pack with 5G rollout.
