Is Samsung Tab A 10.1 in 2020 worth it? - Samsung Galaxy Tab A series Guides, News, & Discus

Is Samsung Tab A 10.1 in 2020 worth it?
Shopping for a tablet for daily media consumption and checking up on emails while working from home during the social distancing order? Have a look at this budget Samsung tablet just may suit the family.
Comes with Exynos 7904 octa-core processor, 2x 1.8GHz and 6x 16GHz cores with 2GB or RAM and 32GB of storage with expandable the microSD storage.
The device charges via USB-C and still spot a 3.5mm headphone jack!
10.1-inch device with the screen at a 16:10 aspect ratio.
1920 x 1200 resolution is more than enough to display movies well.
The screen is sufficiently bright with good color and contrast.
Comes with two speakers, situated at the bottom of the device when held in portrait mode. They’re thankfully loud enough, but it’s odd to have two speakers situated on one side of the device when it makes more sense to place them on different ends, which would’ve given us proper stereo separation when watching movies in landscape mode.
The battery life is excellent. The 6,150mAh battery it ships with is massive as it is, and using the device throughout the entire day for a combination of web browsing, some videos and some gaming could still leave about 40% by the end of the day.

Okay.... I Suppose Its Cool As I Didn't Mention To Be Realistic
Thing Is... Your Phone Will Burn The F*** Down With 4x 2.5GHz Cores
You Could Make It An 8 Core @ 1.2GHz/1.4GHz To Preserve The Battery
And The PPI Looks A Bit Dodgy. But They Are Great Specs Nonetheless

Nexus 7 Successor

With the Nexus 7 Successor right around the corner according to rumors, what are you guys expecting/hoping for (things that probably wont happen but you wish they did)!? Here are my lists.
Expecting:
- Snapdragon 600/800 SoC
- 1080p Screen
- Slimmer (bezels and thickness)
- Rear facing camera
Hoping for:
- 7.7~8.0 inch screen
- 8000~9000 mAh battery
- Gorilla Glass 2/3
Will never happen but wish it would cause I don't want an iPad:
- 4:3 aspect ratio (16:9 and 16:10 are just the wrong aspect ratio for a tablet!!!!)
I did like the 4:3 of my iPad but that'll never happen. The downside was neither orientation felt better over the other since they were so close. The 16:9 allows for greater advantages for specific situations. My old iPad "felt" like the screen was bigger then my original transformer.
I'd be happy with:
Snapdragon 600
1080p screen
wireless charging
Sweet smart cover solution
MS and Apple both have smart cases. The N7 official case would have been sweet of it would stay closed.
They'll probably use the S4 Pro SoC to save money though. If they do go with 1080p, I hope the Pro will be able to keep up. Don't want no iPad3 crap. Its has to be noticeably faster at 1080p.

Seems like for the most part there isn't much distinction between the Snapdragon S4 Pro and the 600 (other than in the case of the Samsung Galaxy S4) and as far as 1080p needing more horsepower, from a graphical point of view both SoCs are IDENTICAL with the Adreno 320 GPU so it shouldn't matter much!
But I'm still foolishly holding my breath for the Adreno 330 in the 800 but that's as unlikely to happen as a Tegra 4...
i dono, i think the krait 300 in the s600 vs the krait 200 in the s4 makes a decent (admittedly incremental) upgrade. so i'd much rather have the 600 to tell you the truth. Qualcomm claims "Snapdragon 600 processor to deliver up to 40% better performance than the Snapdragon S4 Pro processor at lower power." so that's neat.
the rumors say anything from s4 to s800 in the next n7, and while i think the 800 is a pipe dream, the bluetooth sig explicitly stating the inclusion of the 600 is a pretty good sign i think. i just can't wait til it's announced, in may i asked for play store gift certificates for my birthday so i'm kind of invested no matter what is in it

I wouldn't buy a 4:3 tablet. I use it to watch videos a lot, so 4:3 is useless to me. If you want that ratio, get an iPad or Prestigio or something like that.
I would bet on these specs
2GB of ram
1080p IPS 7" LCD
Snapdragon S4/or 600 (800 is unlikely but fingers crossed)
Made of better materials (preferable metal back or chrome bezel ) no screen lift
5MP back camera
2Mp front camera
HSDPA/LTE bands 4/17 (for att and T-Mobile)
200-250$ starting price tag for 16-32gb space
Lte model will be 300-350 for 16-32gb

I Love my 8.4 but...

Hi all!
I am a happy owner of the Galaxy Tab S 8.4. The screen wows me every time I hit the power button, and the size/weight are perfect for my daily commute on the NYC subways. With that being said, I don't love how the processor performs, and how long it has historically taken Samsung to update the OS. With the Nexus 9 just a couple of days away, I wanted to start a good discussion on the state of 8-9 inch tablets.
Tab S Pros:
Screen - Simply Stunning
Size and weight are perfect
SD card slot
Tab S Cons:
Sluggish performance (likely stemming from Touchwiz and switching back and fourth between core sets)
Update cycles
FREQUENT accidental button taps
Nexus 9:
k1 - k1 - k1 - did I mention the k1?
IPS display (although not a higher res than the Tab S)
Android L - VANILLA
OS updates in tune with Google
On Screen buttons (I hate the samsung soft keys... a lot)
Cons:
No SD slot
iOS like 4:3 screen ratio
Heavier than Tab S
I'm sure there a lot of Tab S owners wondering the same thing, and want the opinions of current Tab S owners rather than general android lovers. Be honest... if you think I'm nuts for considering, tell me. If not, tell me why. EITHER way... it's a great time to be an Android enthusiast.
Thanks in advance.
well I don't have the 8.4 variant, using the 10.5 LTE and for me it's all about the screen,I only use it for watching series/movies because of the screen, nothing more, so the Nexus 9 won't be even close to it when it comes to experience, also like you said micro-SD card to store series/movies, that's the only thing I do with it, I have not used tablets before as I did not find any use for it, but with this screen, just wow.
so for me performance is low prio,I have even underclocked (and undervolted) it to 1GHz on the A15 cores just to get little better battery life. if I want performance I use my desktop with i7 3960X and 2xR9 290X
but I'm sure Samsung will release a updated version of this with latest Exynos 5433 SoC, I guess with the Tab S they wanted to show us the beautiful S-AMOLED screen and the Exynos 5420 was the best they could put in it, altough Snapdragon 801 should have been possible, but they want to use their own SoC.
I already placed my Tab S on ebay in anticipation of the Nexus 9 release.
My reasons for the new Nexus:
1: Newest/Fastest processor - with 64 bits and the Tegra K1, it should be 1-2 years future proof.
2: Soft touch back -
3. Newest Android support at all times
4. Nexus Devices hold resale value for ~9 months
My reason against the tab S:
1. Very high resale value as of 10/12
2. Its processor is dated.
My reasons for the Tab S:
1: Prefer AMOLED screen
2. Prefer hardware buttons.
3. Have a 128 GB microSD that is about to go unused.
4. Compact size for screen size.
My reasons against the Nexus 9:
1. No microSD (bigger deal if max size is 32GB)
2. Crossing line into full-sized tablet
3. The Nexus 10.... quickly surprassed
btw, the Nexus 9 might come with micro-SD, still no AMOLED

Decision made.
Wanted to share my decision with everyone, which was tough.
I ended up selling my Tab S and its case for 340. Gonna pre-order the Nexus as soon as they go up. The k1 is such a draw... and the screen isn't that far off from what the Tab S has. IPS is great, and if it's 1440p I'll be satisfied. Crossing my fingers hoping that the rumors are true.
Either way, there are some great Android options out there now.
I was going to get the tab 4.. I ended up getting the tab s 10.5 because of the Samsung ad of the amazing amoled screen, its thinness, fingerprint scanner, and the flash. I kinda regret it now since I don't really need a amazing 2k amoled screen and the development of Roms for it doesn't have much support. Aw well at least I got something to show off its fake gold trim
Nexus 9 specs:
228.2 x 153.7 x 7.9 mm, 425 g (Wi-Fi) / 436 g (3G/LTE)
Screen: 8.9 inches (4:3)
versus Tab 8.4 specs:
212.8 x 125.6 x 6.6 mm, 298 g
Screen: 8.4 inches (16:10)
For me the Tab S wins on portability (versus screen real estate).
Also I do prefer the 16:10 form factor (better usable in one hand, in particular as I use it as my cellphone, plus better for videos. I also prefer the narrower design for text input by swyping. For extensive Input I combine it with an Apple wireless keyboard which has almost same depth wich makes it good for traveling). Performance is plenty enough. Only disadvantage I see is lack of custom rom.
Can I honestly ask besides removing some (lots) of the bloat, being able to install a different launcher and rooting to install xposed what do people think a custom rom will give them?
I realise some kernels will allow extra features like overclocking etc (Not a good idea on a small device IMHO and with 20+ years experience of IT) but what do you really need a custom rom for?
Custom ROM = Customization ?

Upgrade to S2 from NV Shield K1?

I currently use an Nvidia Shield K1 for a carputer. Google Maps, music, Audible, Hangouts, etc. My only complaint is the aggressive memory management. Nvidia designed it to kill apps frequently in order to optimize gaming. So, you have to relaunch apps when task switching. It has nothing to do with amount of available memory.
Best Buy has the S2 9.7" (T813) for $280. Couple questions:
- Does it multitask well and quickly?
- Does the OTG + Charge work reliably?
- Does the screen work well in reverse landscape (buttons on the left)?
- Is the touch screen responsive?
- Is the GPS reliable?
I've RTFA with answers to some of the above questions, but I'd like to get a general idea of how this compares to a Shield K1. TIA.
I don't have the Shield, but I can answer most of those:
1) Yeah, it's snappy and switches tasks quickly.
2) Nope - this beast doesn't quick charge, so at best you can hold steady if the screen is on while it is charging. If you push the SoC, it will actually still drain the battery, just at a much reduced rate, on the charger.
3) Screen is excellent. I have used it in nearly every orientation just fine.
4) I haven't had any issues with the touch interface on mine. It works as expected.
5) I haven't used it extensively, but it seems to work as well as the GPS in my S7 Edge.
I traded my K1 in for the S2 and have never looked back. The shield is good for gaming and is an absolute bargain at the price it goes for new, but I find the tab s2 much more premium and the screen is much much better in every sense. I also prefer the size of the tab s2. I do a lot of gaming and watching media on my tablets and the S2 is great for both. Performance wise it keeps up with the k1 no problem at all, and I am one of few people who really likes touchwiz so I see that as a bonus as well! Lol
I've not really answered your questions but hopefully useful feedback none the less.
I came from the Nexus 9 and I've also never looked back.
I've a feeling the aggressive memory management is because they never put enough RAM in the shield in the first place, (just like the Nexus 9.) :crying:
I cant comment on gaming but as a retro gamer, the 4:3 screen ratio is great. Just bear in mind this tablet doesn't work with a wired Xbox 360 controller and OTG cable.
If you want to hook up to a TV, you will also need the older version of this tablet with the Exynos CPU as the newer SD652 doesn't support either MHL or Slimport.
The K1 is way heavier which makes the s2 feel nice in hand. I didn't think this would matter to me until I picked by k1 tablet up a month later and realized just how much different it feels in hand.
The k1 has far better speakers. The s2 onboard speakers are trash.
The k1 has a better screen ratio for media consumption (16:9)
the s2 has a better screen, AMOLED cannot be beat.
the s2 has much better battery life.
the s2 charges faster (although no quick charge 2.0 ).
the performance is pretty much equal between the two
My take-away is that the galaxy tab s2 is a better device.
I bought the Tab S2 9.7".
Everything about it is better except for one thing - OTG+charge requires a custom adapter. So, I have to charge the tablet separately. Otherwise, the screen is better, multitasking is better, multi-window is easier to use, and the touch screen is more responsive.
I'l hand the K1 down to the kids when they're older.

Well done Mageus, :highfive:
There is an app called, "All in one gestures," which you can use to swap around the order of the recents and back buttons if this annoys you coming from the K1.

ASUS M16 or Acer Triton 500 SE?

Hello everyone, I have come across a deal involving two laptops:
ASUS M16 with an i9 12gen processor, 32GB of RAM, and an RTX 3070TI,
Acer Triton 500 SE with the same CPU and RAM but equipped with the RTX 3080TI.
both laptops are priced the same.
which one you would recommend of the two?
Primarily, I intend to use the laptop for work purposes, specifically rendering software such as (3ds Max, Blender, Lumion, and CAD work). Additionally, I play some AAA games during my free time (like Hogwarts Legacy and Elden Ring)
I am leaning more towards the ASUS M16 due to its slightly better color gamut and overall professional look. Also does the 3080TI have a significant performance boost than 3070TI
I would really appreciate any advice or recommendations you may have.
Advantages of the Asus ROG Zephyrus M16
Around 2.1x better multi-core CPU performance in the Cinebench R23 test
Includes an old-school USB-A port
Higher number of cutting-edge USB Type-C ports: 2 versus 1
Can run popular games at about 37-51% higher FPS
Features a much bigger (~50%) battery – 90 against 60 watt-hours
Thinner bezels and 17% higher screen-to-body ratio
Provides 52% higher max. screen brightness: 500 vs 330 nits
Advantages of the Acer Predator Triton 500 SE
Easier to carry: weighs 200 grams less (around 0.44 lbs)
Much smaller footprint: 15% more compact case (114.1 vs 133.8 square inches)
