Hi,
I have been playing with the GPS Photo feature on ATT Tilt with HTC ROM.
I uploaded some of the pictures I took to locr.
The problem is the location on the map is about 50 ft. from the exact location where it should be.
However, TomTom seems to be displaying the location while driving pretty right.
I usually get signals from about 8-9 satellites.
I don't have much knowledge of GPS systems.
Is this something I should be concerned with (in terms of I paid a good amount for the pda, should I ask for a replacement), or is this error rate within acceptable limits? I think google map interface may not be too precise.
Thank you,

50ft does not sound overly excessive as an error. There are quite a few things that could affect the accuracy in relation to the photograph. Map accuracy being one but also how far away you are from the subject of the photo.
The GPS position on the photo is at best only ever going to be approximate as it will give the position of the photographer not the subject of the photo. So to give an extreme example, if I photgraph a mountain 3 miles away then clearly the GPS position attached to the photo will be out by at least 3 miles as it will log my position not the mountain's.
So the closer you are to the subject then the more accurate the position logged with the photo, but there will still be inacuracies. I generally find that GPS gives a better fix when you are moving. This is so because the software is able to extrapolate your direction of movement and the direction you are facing. This is not true when taking a still photo.

Hello Michael:
Thanks for your reply.
I actually took a chance with setting GpsGate parameters to parameters to COM4 and 57600 baud, and the error is now about 15 ft(5m). I didn't try other baud rates, but uploading pictures to locr displayed a location on the map closer to the location where I took the pictures of the ground.

I think that's pretty good. Actually, as I understand it there may be limits imposed by the GPS set up in the Kaiser that mean the baud rate will not actually get up to 57600 despite it being set at that. However, 5m is as close as you could expect anyway I feel.
Mike
Tilt's GPS uses static navigation. That means that the GPS may not give you accurate positions if you don't move or you just walk. However, it works fine for higher speeds, such as driving. I don't really think that the baud rate affects if you change it to 57600.
dont forget it doesnt add like the .sec to the tag i think its just hours min. i havent looked at the photo info but if you look i think it doesnt tag the sec

All navigation software use some algorithm to "guess" where you are. If you GPS location is X feet from a recognized road, it assume you are driving on that road. When you are taking a picture, it can only give you the exact calculated location which can be off.
this is a dumb question. But what exactly is GPS photo? What i would assume is that it is where you take a picture of a landmark etc and you can put it at a loc on your maps so that it shows the pic while navigating?
But i don't like to assume, for obvious reasons!
Thanks for the help

GPS photo is a function of the Kaiser which stamp the picture with the GPS location in the exif data.
What is wrong ? I`ve taken a GPS photo and inserted the figures from the photo into TOMTOM as a target and the result - the location is 10 km away from where I`ve taken the photo.
Any explanation ???
thanks

Two more things to keep in mind about GPS-photo:
First of all, Kaiser does not fill-up the GPS altitude tag, only latitude and longitude. Which, no doubt, will contribute to the cumulative error when displaying the position on the map. Also the coordinates are rounded to seconds, no fraction of second is noted. That's pretty bad idea
Second is much worse, Kaiser cannot properly edit gps-photos.
For instance the geotag is emptied when photos have been rotated from landscape to portrait and vice versa.
Here is an example of the geotag content:
GPS information: -
GPSVersionID - 2.2.0.0
GPSLatitudeRef - N
GPSLatitude - 51 25 11.00
GPSLongitudeRef - E
GPSLongitude - 5 27 56.00
GPSAltitudeRef - Sea level
GPSAltitude - 0 m
GPSTimeStamp - 23 13 32

But according to TomTom my
GPSAltitude - was 82 meters above the sea level.
GPSLatitude - 51 25 11.89
GPSLongitude - 5 27 56.65
So honestly I don't see how increasing the baud rate of the GPS gate could possibly improve the precision.
gps cursor molving around
I have been using google maps with my Tilt (original rom) for a couple weeks and the location was always spot on. i'd zoom in as close as i could, for example, at a friend's house and you could see the flashing dot hovering over the roof - right on top of where we were standing.
however . . . today i downloaded the taster version of tom tom and downloaded the free map for chicago. the location it showed for me was a good 2 city blocks west of where i was standing. that is about 400 meters maybe (i'm bad with distances, but it was far). i switched to google maps and it showed my location at the same erroneous spot.
after turning my device on and off and re-downloading the latest sat info with Quick GPS the locator in google maps started to edge east to where i was. i was happy to see that. after about 5 minutes, the cursor was over my office. but then it kept going accross the street. then it hovered back and a little south. now it is within 30 meters of my exact location, but it is constantly moving around within that 30 meter circle. it is no longer as precise as it once was.
i never noticed this happening on google maps before. could there be some issue now that i have downloaded tom tom?

I don't think it has anything to do with tomtom.
Please go to the place you know, find it in Google Earth and make a GPS photo of the spot. Than take normal photo of the same place and Geotag it with Google Earth.
When you compare EXIF data of both photos you will know what's wrong with Kaiser
Contrary if you use software that can properly handle the info read from GPS reciever then your location will be displayed within few meters.
Here is example of my trip around the neighborhood
http://tracker1.reperion.com/GMap.aspx?name=BARMALINI&Gzoom=2&mStyle=G_HYBRID_TYPE&PPON=true
As you can see, green balloons always placed along the road, with max deviation of about 10-15 meters and the speed of the car was always determined correctly. The only reason for this improved precision is that the software that I used for tracking is less buggy than the GPS camera.
be happy its not showing you that the photo was taken in Kazakstan. one other member and myself are getting positions in another country.

thank you for your suggestion. i'm not sure how to take GPS photos, but i will look into it. I saw this thread was about how precise the GPS was and thought I would ask my question here. My cursor seems to move around the screen a lot now and it did not do that before. it sort of drifts around a 30 meter radius of where I actually am. i can see it moving around even when i am sitting still. I just noticed the problem yesterday after installing tom tom, so i thought maybe there was a connection. wish i could figure this out.
On my old desire when I select GPS tag on in camera every time i went into camera it turns on the GPS, but on the optimus 2x I turn Tag Location on, then take a few pics, leave the camera aplication, but when i open up the camera it has the Tag Location Off.
How can I keep the tag location turned ON, this is the whole point of GPS geotags.
Thanks.
Same here, can't work it out either for permanently turning it on. I'll keep trawling the net to see if I can get an answer. Others with a 2x must be getting annoyed with this?
Yep it's a silly system.
Doesn't affect me anymore, CM does it properly
Not only geotagging, but seems none of the settings gets saved when you close the camera app. I'd buy a third-party app, but so far none have all the features I want.
I plan on using this as my all in one device so phone can be done with google voice but:
1. Does it have GPS for photo location and can you run turn by turn navigation?
2. What is the standby time for such an all in one device application? Battery seems pretty small?
Anyone out there using it as an all in one device?

So apparently it has A-GPS support and GLONASS. Can anyone confirm that Google maps and turn by turn navigation is working?

Yep it does it works great reall fast and when your at your destination street view shows the photo of where you have finished.
This even takes photos while filming in video mode I found this out tonight lol

andypull15,
Thanks. Have you tried using google voice.? I am curious as to how the camera wakes from standby when receiving a call. My nexus 7 works flawlessly but I was curious due to the default action of the camera software showing up first. Could you also comment on battery life if it is left in standby mode? Thanks.

Yes it can embed the GPS location into the photo metadata
and the standby time is pretty good, I'm into my second day with this device with about two hours screen on time and it's at 48%.
When not in use the device seems to go into a deep sleep. When I first charged it the other day I didn't use it for 8 hours and it had only lost 2% battery life by the time I turned in on.
I'm currently listening to my local radio station via "Tune In" radio and I can tell you that the speaker is very loud and of good quality.
As previously mentioned you can take photos whilst shooting video. This is a standard Android function that has been carried over to this device. There is a limit of 6 photos that can be taken in this fashion if I recall correctly.
time to install sygic and see where it goes
Hi folks,
First off, I absolutely love this phone so far - I gave up my one M8 and 2014 Moto X for this guy and could not be happier. However, there are two things, not major dealbreakers, but are enough of an annoyance to really impact the enjoyment of this phone:
1) Location tagging in the camera: I love having all my photos geotagged - I love looking on the map, seeing where my wife and I have been, picking out photos from certain locations, etc - I always keep location tagging in my photos enabled on all my phones. the Moto X and One M8 never had this issue - but the xperia misses tagging photos with a location if I take the photo too quickly.
As soon as I fire up the camera app, the little satellite icon starts blinking in the upper corner. If I snap a picture before it "locks" and changes into a location marker, no location tag. If I force myself to wait for it to lock location before taking a picture, it adds a 3-4 second delay to each shot when I'm trying to shoot as quickly as possible (i.e when I take it out of my pocket holding the shutter button down to capture a passing moment).
This is a real annoyance - anyone else experiencing this? Is there a way around this? Using the "google camera" app, it doesn't have this issue, every photo is properly location tagged no matter how quickly I take the photo. But there seems to be no way to launch this app by default with the shutter button...
2) Power management "tip" spam - this is driving me nuts! At first it kept telling me to use stamina mode, so I did. Then it kept nagging me to turn on location based wifi, but I didn't want to do that. After about 6 times, I got fed up - held the "tip" notification down, went to "app info", which took me to 'extended standby controller' I believe. I unchecked "show notifications" there. But guess what - it kept popping back up anyway! So I finally gave in and turned on location absed wifi. Now it's popping up AGAIn telling me "TIDAL is keeping your device from going into standby." Duh, I'm listening to music, why does it have to spam my notification bar like this?
is there any way to permenantly disable these power management "tips"? I'm extremely satisfied with my battery life and have my phone configured exactly the way I like it - I don't need all these nags cluttering up notifications telling me what to do.
Hello,
I have Android 8.1 and b137, Still waiting for Pie update and hope Huawei had already fix that issue.
Let's talk about that issue. I use a lot the manual mode then manual focus for streetphotography. The big advantage is you do not need to wait focus working to take picture.
When I set focus in pro mode manual and that I take picture, it's sharp. But... when i check and watch the picture i taken in gallery (to check if picture was ok) and that i go back to camera, i take a new picture, the camera is already out of focus.. It happen same thing when phone stand by (or I press off) and when message "tap screen to reactiate camera" appear... I must always repeat focus settings operations...
Seem p20 pro keep in memory all settings (Iso, speed, etc...) but not the focus unfortunatelly.
I even made a video:
https://youtu.be/13541NErEh0
Do you have this issue? Please try it and say if you have that issue also. Thank you!
Yes, same thing here. Pretty annoying.
Noticed something similar on Auto. Usually it focuses after a few moments, but sometimes I have to point it around or tap the screen.
