Connect to a computer via USB ? - Moto X4 Questions & Answers

I have been trying, a handful of times per year since I first bought it (in 2017), to flash a ROM or even transfer files from my Moto X4 to/from a computer (KDE Connect works for file transfer, but is only available to Linux, and I sometimes need to transfer to a Windows machine. Sometimes, but not always, files can be transferred by bluetooth.)
I have tried the following with all of the following computer operating systems and with multiple USB data cables (Yes. I have purchased cables claiming specifically to be 'data' cables just for this purpose):
- Linux
- Ubuntu 16, 18, 20 (aarch64 and x86_64)
- Manjaro (x86_64)
- Fedora 24 (aarch64 and x86_64)
- Clear Linux,
- Antix (x86 and x86_64)
- Debian Buster (aarch64 and x86_64)
- Armbian
- Qubes 3.5, 4.0 (x86_64)
- Windows 10 without Moto USB drivers
- also in a KVM-mounted virtual machine with USB passthrough
- also in a VirtualBox virtual machine with USB passthrough
- Windows 10 with Moto USB drivers
- also in a KVM-mounted virtual machine with USB passthrough
- also in a VirtualBox virtual machine with USB passthrough
- MacOS (version unknown)
- Haiku R1B2 (x86_64)(no ADB/fastboot)
- RiscOS (aarch64)(no ADB/fastboot)
- FreeDOS (x86_64)(no ADB/fastboot)
I have tried to connect:
- Normal user mode after long periods of use.
- Normal user mode after a short period of use.
- Safe Mode
- immediately following a factory reset (internal)
- immediately following a factory reset (external)
- Android 8 (as shipped)
- Android 9 (as updated)
When plugged into a charging brick, I briefly get the notice that TurboPower(TM) is connected.
When plugged into a computer USB port,
- the battery icon indicates charging,
- no USB options appear in notifications area,
- computer does not recognize a USB storage device is connected.
In Settings (USB Preferences), all options are greyed out. This is true regardless of Developer Mode USB Debugging and USB default-mode settings.
On computer, `adb devices` shows no devices when connected.
On computer, `fastboot` gets stuck in a loop waiting for devices.
When connected to a computer while booted to the bootloader, the screen indicates that it is USB connected.
When plugging in a USB thumb drive, the phone recognizes the external storage device (up to 32GB, then it fails to detect anything.)
My device is hardware version p4, Model XT1900-1, software variant google_fi.
How do I connect this thing to a computer?
====
I spoke to Motorola tech support this morning. They think I have a hardware fault. I want to disagree because I can read and write to USB storage devices via the data port, and the bootloader recognizes a USB connection even though the attached computer does not.

Were all these attempts on the same computer, or worse, on the same USB port? I've had similar issues when connecting to certain usb ports on my desktop. I have an old thinkpad x230 with a usb 2.0 port that works reliably, but the usb 2.0 ports on my desktop doesn't. In my experience the usb port you use matters more than the operating system. If you can, try a different computer?

I'm wondering if you ever got anywhere with this. I'm finding the same issue on my Moto X4. Same Model and software variant.

Pls I have window 10 iso ... Any time is install it ..it comes with Mozilla Firefox and other apps too.. I want to know how they did it... So that I can do the same by all my necessary application... Pls help me

Whenever I first tried to flash ROM's on my phone, use the fastboot and ADB commands and tried to transfer files on my windows 10 PC, I was running into all kinds of road blocks, after researching the issue further I found that adb and fastboot don't work properly on a computer connected to a USB 3 port, so an older style USB port is necessary for things to work, however I have a rather new computer that doesn't have the older style USB ports, so in order to get around that I bough a USB 2.0 hub and connected the Hub to a usb 3.0 connection and then connected the phone to the usb 2 hub and after that things worked just fine.

Try uninstalling all the drivers and try one again using x64 (I know you probably did it already, but just confirming).
Maybe try doing a factory reset?
So i uninstalled the drivers using the uninstaller application that came with the download then i deleted the files off the computer.
went to the captivate wiki on xda, downloaded the 64 bit drivers from that link (look exactly the same as the other links), then ran the installer application from that download.
what happened was at the end of the install wizard it said that: "mss install wizard was not completed... install wizard was not succesfully installed samsung usb driver for mobile phones.".
I did however notice that at one point in the wizad it called the driver x86 instea of x64.
i would be lieing if i didnt say i hated samsung right now. o yea and i think at&t too. ha ha
Thanks for the help! : )
so in addition to hours spent on other days, im about 5 hours into trying to make the phone connect today.
it seems worse now, it only sometimes sees a device it cant recognize.
i tried more batches of driver uninstall/installs and i even downloaded the full kies.
nothing seems to make it go. im about to lob this thing across the room. any other suggestions or people with a similar problem?
any help would be much appreciated.
1) Scrub your system again of all Samsung drivers.
2) Go to Samsung Software & Firmware Downloads and get the Mini Kies program.
3) Install Mini Kies, this will install drivers.
4) Set USB settings on phone to ask on connection, Settings>Applications>USB Settings>Ask on Connection
5) Connect phone to computer
6) Select Mass Storage when the phone asks
7) Mount phone to computer, depends on which ROM you are running
8) Report back,
I'm running Windows 7 x64 Home Premium and have no troubles connecting. Hope this helps.
ok thanks for the tips.
Here's what i did:
Download mini kies from the link (i noticed that there were driver there to but i did not download that link)
Set phone to ask on connection
plug phone into computer
set to mass storage.
mount sd card
computer says "usb device not recognzed"
Mini Kies still says "please connect mobile phone"
i scream!
what do you suggest i do from here?

Have you tried a rear USB port instead of a front? I don't know why but many have claimed this was the trick. It should not work, but for some reason it does for some.

The usb ports on the back of the computer are usually connected directly to the motherboard. The usb ports located other places on the computer are usually connected to the mother board via a secondary card of some type - this adds another level of hardware and software drivers required to make those ports work. Also it is not unusual for some usb to operate at different power levels - often referred to as powered and non powered ports.
So not all ports are the same which is why some people have different results on different ports on their computer.
One other option that sometimes works: turn on usb debugging in settings/applications/development. Then connect the usb. Pull down the notification window and select the button that says something like "select to copy files...". This brings up a dialogue box asking to mount the phone, and you select that.

I have built many machines and never had a device work on one USB port and not on another.
All my USB devices that require power, require an actual AC adapter -As for unpowered ports - never heard of that. Powered and unpowered hubs yes - but not unpowered ports.

First, just to make this clear all usb ports are powered, and so long as they are in compliance with the usb standard they are powered to 5v.
Second, what you referring to with powered/non powered usb hubs is a usb hub that has a secondary power source (ie includes ac power cable maybe) vs a usb hub that is only powered by the usb serial bus via the usb connecter to the computer.
What was referring to in powered/non powered usb port is a technology included in some ports that allows that port to use the power of two usb ports in one port - not sure but I believe it is an ibm technology - which is some times referred to slangly and inaccurately as powered usb
Now the point of my post was to point out even though there is a universal standard for usb - depending on how these ports are actually connected to the serial bus on the mother board will affect they way they perform - ie usb on the back of the computer that is mounted directly to the mother board serial bus vs one connected via a pci card.
And even though you have never experienced differing performance in your usb ports does not mean that it doesn't happen - it is actually quite common particularly with devices that both connect via usb as well as charge its battery via usb.
I currently have a computer with 7 usb ports all of which will connect and work with my wife's ipod - but I have found two of these ports that will not charge her ipod. most likely this failure to charge her ipod is due to the hardware (or the software driver for the said hardware) in between these two ports and the mother board.
In all of the computers you have built have you built any that had usb ports mounted directly on the mother board serial bus that you also connected a usb pci card to allow for more usb ports? I guarantee you if you do this often enough you wil eventually build a computer that has usb ports with differing performance.
while the info on usb is nice : ) i would very much appreciate any help on gettingmy phone connected. thanks!

I'm guessing by now you have tried all your ports, lol. have you tested your phone on other computers and/or with other usb cables?
One thing to try is check and see if there are any driver updates for the usb hardware in your computer. You can usually find these updates with the computer vendor and/or mother board manufacturer support.
Sorry I missed your post earlier about connecting to a mac - when you connected to the mac was your phone in debugging mode?
I don't know if it is necessary to connect to a mac, but to get some linux distros to mount the drives in cappi it has to be in debugging mode and while linux and NEXTstep are different they are in the same family, have the same ancestor. maybe if someone with a mac read s this they can let us know if it is needed.
If you keep connecting to different computer with no luck, try a different usb cable.
Actually its connecting to a pc. I just tried to connect to a mac wouldn't work there either.
But I've tried all the different combos of debugging and mass storage options it just says it doesn't recognize the usb device.
I have tried a bunch of different drivers and using both kies and mini kies.
Windows 7 64 bit
Laptop
Captivate (stock everything)

getting unrecognized usb device is almost certainly a driver issue - what ever kept it from working with the mac is something else.
have you downloaded and installed the drivers dg has linked in his odin 3 one click thread?
Second have you had a chance to check if your computer had any usb driver updates? One of my machines would not properly identify my phone that I tried reinstalling drivers on and I found there was and update for the mother board usb controller - after updating it instantly recognized it.
I am having the same issue with an added twist, which is that some USB ports will rapidly disconnection/reconnect the device to windows even though I havent unplugged it.
I have/had adb working on both my old laptop, and desktop. And like the OP I have spent many hours trying to get this to work. Very frustrating.

[Q] USB storage doesn't show up in (some) Windows 7

Hi, I have a Nexus One with CyanogenMod 7.0.3 installed. My desktop computer is a Windows 7 computer with the Android SDK installed. My laptop is a Windows 7 computer without the SDK.
When I plug in the phone in the Laptop, and turn on USB storage on the phone, I see the phone contents. But on the Desktop I only see the phone under Device Manager.
I even uninstalled the SDK, but no change. I used both the original cable and other cable. Updated drivers. I'm at loss.
this happened to me too. A quick fix is to disable then enble the driver in device property. A permanent fix is to wipe and flash the phone again.
Hope that helps
You also may need to check and see what drive letter your device is connecting to. If your phone defaults to drive "G" and "G" was already being used by some other connected device, you will not see your phone. Check it under disk management.

Connecting to Macbook Air

I'm unable to get the MacBook to recognize that the phone is plugged in. The phone prompts whether to charge or MTP/PTP but changing that mode does not get the Mi Mix recognized as being connected. Anyone have any advice? Kind of new to Mac. Never have an issues with my Windows 10 desktop
Maybe you need this:. https://www.android.com/filetransfer/
Android is not natively browsable in MacOS.
Try out this app - it also allows connecting Xiaomi devices (as well as all Android devices) to Mac

Question USB problem - PC doesn't see/connect to my mobile.

I've got this problem since last year. I have read about the issue on the internet, no solution provided so far.
When I connect my mobile to any PC, it says 'check your charger connection' as on the screen below.
- I can only transfer files over WIFI which is extremely annoying.
- no problem with charging, all good here, just the problem with recognizing the phone by a computer
- I remember that there should be a menu when you plug usb cable between a mobile and pc, askig you what to choose (transfer, charging etc). It is gone.
- I have tried different cables and different PCs
- USB debbuging is ON but when it is off, nothing changes
- in Developer Options - Default USB configuration - I choose Transferring files, doesn't help
- the usb socket in my phone must be working if it lets me to charge the phone without any problems
- DEX only allowes me to transfer files via WiFi.
Any ideas guys? I am on A13 but it happens since A12.

USB connection to PC - only charging

Dear All,
Yesterday I switched on my old Pixel 4a5G then connected to the PC and... nothing happened.
I dont have any notification on Windows (even on Ubuntu) about new device (checked also device manager) and the same on the Pixel.
Phone only charged.
I decided to check another cables and I had the same result. I even bought new cable USB Ato C 3.2 gen 1 and still nothing only charging.
I checked on another PC the same - only charging my device and no connection. Of course I switched on usb debugging on Developer Mode and USB/Android Auto File Transfer option, even PTP doesen't work.
So I had:
- no notification about USB connection on the Pixel
- no notification about new device on the Windows (missing sound , no device Android or another name in Device Manager on the Windows)
I switched Pixel in safe mode - the same result
I connected to the Pixel my WD SE protable hard drive and... I had notification about USB device, I opened it and had two options:
- This device (which was choosen)
- Connected Device
rest like File Transfer, Connection Thetering were grayed out
I choose Connected Device and there was an info "switching" and after couple seconds "cound not switch..."
If anyone had the same problems? could be software problem or USB port broken on the Pixel?
I have latest updates installed on the Pixel. I did Factory Reset but nothing changed. Even on Fastboot mode Windows didn't recognize device (no sound nothing)

Mine stopped connecting to PC after Nov2022 security update, still will not connect & Google dont want to know, they just shut threads down.
Hi !
I have had the same problem for a long time !!! No more notifications to choose it when connect my Pixel to PC !!? no Pop-up to choose "Connection, Photo Transfer, Charge, etc..."
The simplest solution is to connect the Pixel via USB to the PC/MAC then open Settings/Connected Devices/USB/ To finally access to choose "File Transfer, Connection Sharing, Midi, Etc..." menu.
Do not forget to first activate the developer mode and USB debugging.
But I don't understand why I never see the notification to choose
