Anyone knows how to see which app is using the most CPU time? I want to throw my new redmi note 9 at the wall already. Hardly any apps installed and every few minutes it freezes and becomes unresponsive.
I got one app and it showed this during freezes

Did you install a new app before that started?
No, Even during initial setup it was like this
Do you have root right now ?
Basically the miui doesn't kill the app when you close/ leave it.Download something like avast cleaner in the Playstore and close/force the apps listed.Hate to say it but don't expect wonderful things from this phone.Mtk cpu and the biggest problem the miui interface atm.

Can I leave it unrooted?
I checked battery stats and it says 75% is taken by screen time. Is there any app that works without rooting and can show the tasks occupying CPU time?
Mmm let me see what ROM are you on global,EU, and what version.
This phone especially some roms are famous for a heavy load off bloatware, ads, tracking, collection off data.mix that with a very in my opinion really bad miui software.
Because you're screen takes the most battery drain most likely we could rule out a third party app.leaves us with system apps.
I had the same as you're phone out off the box freezes.
I debloat my phone installed a alternative launcher with addquard.its not a rocket but it's most off the time ok only use it as back up.
Basically I can't think off a very easy way to get detailed information right now.Even you have root system dump log .even then you have a load off info.system tracing is available but takes time to learn and understand.
I'm on global rom, 12.0.6.
I thought chrome was the problem and disabled it but I still have these 100% cpu spikes every few minutes.
Global ROM is not the cleanest ROM out there.i am not at home right now so I can't check on my other phone if we can get some information out of a non rooted phone.
I would like to point out this page.
Saki EU tool Szaki used it on global 12.03
You don't need root just read the page and run.chrome is no light weight but a mi browser with adds and tracking is no joy either.
Well because I did use this phone only for work.Testing, sharing I only do in emulators. So dropped in the phone with my son to kill it basically what we found out.its not the CPU it is android 10 what request around 2gb of ram ideally. So we got 1gb left normal it should kill processing apps if it runs out of memory.
Now the mi shell miui is holding on 2,2 GB if you play games like asphalt 8,9 zombie hunter, armor god,af arena it is killing itself.
Disable miui or/and give the miui a order to automatically close apps he really don't like that.
So the CPU runs at 100% because off the shortage in memory so in theory we only have 2gb of ram.A android 10 runs idle already around 1,6 gb.So it's no wonder why it lags big
time on a lot.
The fix create a swap file on you're android device.ram expended root ,swapper root,link2sd with gapps root.there is a APK available what create a swap file on you're sd card ,take a good card do.no root.
A video to give you idea how it can run with an without a 3 GB swap file.Even with a 1gb swap file you should walk out the woods
1 to 8 minutes testing 4 games
8 to 11 minutes FPS test .
Last part starting without v memory stuck at boot screen.

I recently rooted and while I have not noticed the battery dieing faster the spare parts app is showing media and google apps in network as using up a lot of battery? Does anyone know exactly what it could be? I didnt use the camera, and i have noo music on the phone so definitely no media player. Ive maybe d/l two things from market (they were frozen for quite some time thought) and ive had google talk signed out since i dont use it and to save battery. I do have my gmail on autosync but again this was never this bad w/o root. The only apps i have now that I didnt have before root is autostarts (with somethings disabled) and wifi tether. Some screens below. I am on Cyanogens 3.6.8.1 rom with the newest spl and radio. As of today Im on apps2sd and linux swap but the media folder was definitely like that before partitioning.

Also wanted to know if on this Cyanogen rom if installing one of the overclock apps and scaling the cpu down during sleep actually work on this rom? i tried the overclock widget and set it to 528 528 when screen on and as low as it goes off but i just wanted to know if this is actually working because when i turn the screen on the widget is at 528 (updates every 5 secs) and i dont know if its actually going up to 528 that fast or if its just not underclocking???? Thanks for any help guys
i wouldn't recommend setting your idle speed much lower than your screen on speed because more battery will be used having to go from the lowest speed to 528. the scaled cpu in cyanogen's rom works great for me. i have long quit using any overclocking apps

You are not the only person. I have the same exact symtoms, by doing the same thing, with the same widget, on the same ROM.
Good luck, once I unrooted and got the OTA update to CRC1 my battery life is better, but no where close to what it should be. Also I could not hit 100% charged until I unrooted. Now I can whenever the phone feels like it.
Maps takes FOREVER to load.
I used this device up to May of 2011 and decided to throw it away because I spent 30 minutes one day trying to map something to find where my friends were. The phone froze and I rebooted. Took forever to boot and to initiate everything before I could map again. Then a phone call came through and it froze. I rebooted AGAIN.
I got a Nexus S and lived happily til.... I lost it overseas.
I came back to my Milestone which I did keep on CM6 by Milaq hoping that it'd use less memory, but Maps still takes FOREVER to load. I went to CM7 the other day and found it to be about the same.
I'm using the v8 supercharger script on balanced. Am I doing something wrong?
I'm so annoyed because last Friday I was standing in the rain because I forgot to write down the cross street of a restaurant before I went out, but I had to stand there for 2 minutes while my phone loaded maps. If I don't reboot everyday, Google Maps is very unusable. In fact I'm so annoyed I bought a SGS2 phone now. LOL.
Maps uses almost all the RAM available in poor Droid.
Changing any OOM values and/or locking Launcher in Memory is not recommended!
On CM7 both Maps and Camera were unusable with locked Launcher - without it was bearable.
To my surprise using locked Launcher, Swype plus Maps works fine on Miui 2.1.x
the only issue i have with maps on cyanogenmod 7.1.5 on my milestone is the precache did not keeping in stock. Navigation and others stuff works fine, for a too old device, as droid, Milestone.
It's your ROM. I still use my Milestone as a back-up phone and I've tried quite many custom ROMs, but the one that I keep coming back to is Telus Lite, a very light-weight Eclair mod. I haven't tried a snappier or more stable ROM on the Milestone; and it looks good, too.
And Maps works well with it.
Here's a screenshot I took.

(If you install the latest version of the ROM, V5.2, you're gonna need to use the mms.apk from V5. Or simply use V5.)
Well thats the problem i face too. Maps need a lot of ram thats the reason it slows down on CM7 or other roms. Recently i updated to Cyanogen Mod9 ICS edition by nadlabak. and maps is working gr8. and its fast as well.
I have a ext4 Partition to take care of the space. Overall the ROM is awesome (Well its still in alpha stage so bugs to deal with), if you dont use camera much then i suggest you upgrade to CM9 its worth the time.
Hi,
This is sort of a continuation to a thread I made a few weeks ago, which was about launcher redraw problems I had with every single launcher I tried. I'm on FroyoPro v2.5, and on the recommendation of a fellow board member (thanks, Dagger) I'm running Nemus launcher. Basically, whenever i install or uninstall an app, my launcher prompts me to either force close or wait, and when I choose wait, it becomes slow for the next five or ten seconds and then returns to normal. It was worse before, but ticking "Lock launcher into memory" solved the most of the problems. Seems that the lack of RAM was actually the source of the problem.
I was recommended the SuperCharger script. However, I needed a newer version of BusyBox to install it, so I scrapped the idea for the fear I might brick the phone.
I investigated further for a solution, and found the app called RAM Manager (free version), which was made by a developer here at XDA. I installed it, set the "balanced" profile, and it actually fixed the problem. No redraws so far, and I even think the launcher is a tad smoother than before.
Has anyone tried this app? Is it a good thing to have or would you rather recommend I try something else? Are there any apps like it that are perhaps more efficient? It seems that all I need is better RAM management for the issue to be solved.
EDIT: Forgot to add the link to the XDA thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1305060
So far so good. Battery seems more or less unaffected. No negative effects on AnTuTu and Quadrant benchmark scores. Played five games in total, seemingly no negative or positive effects. What are your feedbacks on this?
The ram manager is actually a substitute to the supercharger script.
I personally recommend it if you are having ram issues.
Also you may freeze or uninstall the useless apps(mainly system apps) so as to free more memory.
Hm, now two days into the testing I've noticed that launcher redraws still do happen on occasion. However, it also seems that this app does the job well the moment it started and several minutes after running, but its effectiveness sort of degrades afterwards. Two days after I don't even notice any difference than before. What's the reason behind this? Is it fully compatible with CM ROMs?
There's only one more thing that I would also like to try before dropping this whole issue completely. Obviously it's a RAM thing, because running the backup I made a day after flashing FroyoPro seems to have no problems until I choke it with more apps. Then the same thing starts occurring. Not much can be done with the limited RAM X8 has.
However, what do you think about tweaking the VM heap size and MinFree values in CM settings? Is it possible to alleviate the problem with some tweaks from there?
Ahhhhhhh
V6 supercharger is just a ....beep.....
Before using that my antutu benchmark was 4005 - after installing script my score had a freefall @ ~3500~ ( lost 500 scores)
I'm using ram manager pro too, I can say that its awesome for setting to -multitasking option ( 3 apps at the same time)
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Yes, and I might actually try buying this app. Even though it didn't resolve the redraw issue completely, the general feeling of better performance seems to linger. I'm going to keep running the free version for a few more days and see what would happen

There you go...
Download "system tuner pro" or any similar apps from market.
Press "tweak " button
Set "hidden apps" option to maximum value (now its 24mb but u can raise it to 32 or higher )
That's it...
*launcher pro OR adw launcher are too light and don't need to increase memory (I use adw with Widgets without reddraws
Use thishttp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1987032
It works for me.
Just install the apk and tick both yes and run at boot.

I just got mine today and have a minimum of apps installed. I hope this isn't normal RAM usage. Also, what is the icon next to the 4G LTE icon?

Don't worry about RAM. Android will automatically expand and contract the space available for applications in the background without worry. Think about it like this:
You have 50 processes/applications running taking up 500MB of RAM allotted to 10MB per process. When you have to utilize say one of those processes and it needs 150mb of ram to run properly your device has to call that process, expand that process and then contract it once your done using it. (or the system is done using it). That takes unnecessary battery and time.
What Android does is let that application/process that needs 150MB of RAM to run, have it if there isn't an issue (maxing available ram) so when it is needed it doesnt have to expand and contract. When you open a large app or game and it needs more then is available the system will automatically close down and slim RAM usage, but only when it is needed.
What does this mean to you? 99% of the time you will NEVER notice that 80%+ of your RAM is being used. But if you start closing or restricting applications to small sizes (trying to keep RAM usage to a minimum) you will absolutely notice it as it takes more time to load up things like recent applications, respond to a home button press or open an application.

That is the NFC icon. It means you have NFC turned on.
if you want a fast, smooth, lighting response phone, it will use up tons of RAM. You dont 'need to care about ram use unless you run out of it completely and notice lag. as long as the phone is not lagging then you don't need to check ram at all, it's high usage is necessary for a fast smooth phone.
Has anyone been able to figure this out?
What does this app do to "boost" performance?
Use a lot of cpu cycles, heat up the phone... that's about it.
Useful for burn in when you first get the phone, you know help get the cpu heatsink properly seated
My stock 10+ OS load is over a year old, still fast and stable without using that app.
SD Maid, using the old Device Care cleaner (firewall blocked) and clearing the system cache occasionally is all I do.
It seems that it may be compiling the app for your target device.
This might shed some light...TL;DR of TL;DR: not much if you're patient, the OS would do the same things in a few days.

Interesting. Perhaps mine was already optimized although I ran it the first or second day after reloading.
On my 10+/Pie I didn't notice any difference the couple times after I ran it.
It's usefulness seems limited to being a hand warmer in the winter.
I have also noticed that turning on any power management tends to create issues and not help battery life. Problem apps are best addressed directly. About all I do otherwise is close apps when done with them.
In the end Android Pie on this device manages its self very well (after heavy reconfiguration).
My current OS load has seen heavy usage but doesn't show it... I'm impressed to the point where a reload seems like it be a waste of time even after over a year.
Snake oil?
It actually runs the shell command in the picture below to compile the apps in speed-profile mode.

You can also manually compile the apps you need via adb:
adb shell cmd package compile -m <MODE> -f <PACKAGE>
In fact, I think that using the speed mode will have better performance than the speed-profile mode, but it will take up more storage space.
More about the compile mode, see:

I guess it should be similar to the Clear dalvik-cache option in the previous version of recovery, which will "undo" the optimization of all apps so that the apps can be re-optimized after reboot, just like a FOTA did.
