Galaxy S8 T-Mobile USA Unlock

I bought a used T-Mobile Galaxy S8 to a third party, I found it on FB and I tough it would be a good deal. Unfortunately it is locked to T-Mobile and it is hard to unlock it by T-Mobile since I don't have any proof of purchase. I have been looking for unlock services but looks like nobody is really able to unlock the T-Mobile "Unlock App". Today I found this page which claims to be able to unlock the phone but I am not sure about it.

no, I sent them an email and they replayed about 24 hrs later saying they don't have service for T-Mobile by now. So far I have tried at least 5 different webpages with no luck by now.

yes my experience as well. i know a guy that can unlock it but i am not prepared to pay $120usd to unlock a phone. there must be a way to unlock that phone without going through all this. i am searching..

I just purchased the Sprint OnePlus 7 Pro 5g (Model#: GM1925 Firmware Version: 9.5.12.GM25CC). I absolutely love the phone to but there is one huge issue with it. Sprint has disabled the OEM Unlock setting in developer options making it impossible to unlock the Bootloader and root the device!
The reason I am starting this thread is
1) Warn perspective buyers that the Bootloader cannot currently be unlocked
2) See if the XDA community has any ideas on how to Unlock the Bootloader without enabling OEM unlock.

I have recently seen some comments like this:
"If you have the device SIM unlocked, you are then eligible to request the token to bootloader unlock your device from OnePlus. This process takes about a week. You then flash the token and it will then allow you to enable OEM unlocking in Developer Options and then unlock the bootloader."
THIS IS 100% FALSE. Both myself and "Whoareyou" have tried this and it does not work. According to OnePlus, "the Sprint version of the OnePlus 7 Pro 5g doesn't support oem unlock". T-Mobile's bootloader unlock procedure will work on our device.

EDL mode -> download global partitions is my guess.

Yea, me too. They didn't do anything like this with the Essential PH-1 or Pixel 3 so I was pretty surprised when I saw that they disabled "OEM Unlocking".
I understand that Sprint has to protect themselves by sim locking leased devices to their network but this is ridiculous.

Good luck getting support from OnePlus on any issues regarding the 5G device. I have the UK 5G variant and support from OnePlus is non-existent! We have ONLY JUST got the camera improvements etc that the LTE version got............2 months ago. And we've spent the best part of 3 months on June's security patch until 2 days ago when OnePlus updated to August's patch. Support for the 5G variants fcuking sucks guys!

I’d like to know if the Sprint edition has the Local Update option in Settings -> System -> System updates. Maybe that can be of use to free your phone. Can you post a screenshot of the system updates screen?

It does not have that option and OEM Unlock is greyed out on Developer options.

I was also unable to OEM unlock this phone. I tried via Fastboot as well.
Would the T-Mobile method prevent me from activating the SIM or using the phone on Sprint's network? Seems like it would be risky considering I don't have any backups of the firmware, since there are modem changes and whatnot Unless the factory reset retains root/TWRP? I just wanted to touch base with people on this before I attempt it.
Has anyone had any luck rooting this phone?

Perhaps a Dev would be willing to use an exploit to gain root to unblock the OEM unlock feature. Here is a link to a zero-day found not too long ago.

Thanks for the information and I appreciate the response.
Just for anyone who (is probably not) interested... I am returning the phone and ordering it directly from OnePlus. I'm going to switch my service to T-Mobile and take my phone there. OnePlus supports the modding community, but Sprint disabling any ability to mod is a bit frustrating to me. I'm tired of being tethered with CDMA too. So I'm going to go an easier route. Besides, I'm sure the extra RAM will be nicer than the 5G anyhow.

Unfortunately, some people don't have that option. I'm sure a Dev here has the ability. This phone has an amazing Dev community.

Yeah, I'm keeping mine. I've been in this boat before with other phones that I have had from Sprint and XDA has always come through. Once the phone has a wider release I'm HOPING it will get a bit more support here. Hell, I'll be a guinea pig since I now have insurance on the phone.

I've never been a fan of insurance for phones, but now that they offer screen replacement for $29, and this phone being damn near ALL screen, I went for it. And I may get around to testing the method I suggested earlier. I may have to do some stuff in Linux.

Keep us posted!!

Anyone tried a Sim unlock yet? That was the way around the 7 Pro and 6T on T-Mobile network. Once sim unlocked you could enable OEM unlock.

IT is for pro, not for 5g, am I right?

I would love to know if anyone has had success unlocking the bootloader on Sprint? Or if one of our amazing devs is working on something for us. I have no issue donating for their time and work.

I'm on the same phone, it also includes a single sim tray so I just ordered a dual one to see if it works.
Did some testing of the 5G yesterday and the Sprint network is a joke.

What type of speeds were you getting? I know it's not as fast as Verizon 5G but should have better penetration.

I am a little hesitant to try flashing the other 5G OPS to my Phone. I don't have a backup device atm... Although, if I could get my hands on the Firehose for our device, I would have to option to backup and restore partitions. Or, if we could get our hands on the OPS for the Sprint OP7.

Possible Verizon bootloader unlock

Well I called Verizon today and told them I was traveling out of country. The agreed to unlock device. My OEM Unlock used to be greyed out with the Device is Carrier Locked. After they unlocked it for me just 15 min ago the OEM Unlocking option is still greyed out but the message now reads Connect to the internet or contact your carrier. So it's still greyed out but I wonder if I try fastboot unlock if it would unlock it and make it not greyed out.
Just not sure if fastboot to oem unlock will make it work now.

It will not.
The toggle needs flipped to use the fastboot command.

Shoulda bought direct from Google if you want that unlocked

What happens when you stick a working SIM from a different carrier in it? Until their phone is CARRIER unlocked, the oem unlocking toggle will be grayed out and it cannot be bootloader unlocked. Doubtful they would carrier unlock their phone until it was 100% paid off. You will not be able to bootloader unlock Verizon's phone until the OEM toggle is enabled, and that won't happen until their phone is carrier unlocked.... in fact they may never carrier unlock their phone.

I can't believe that after 3.5 years of locked Verizon Pixel bootloaders people are still talking about unlocking a locked Verizon bootloader. It's never going to happen.

Meaning your device is paid off, or his? I'm not sure there are any verizon-bought Pixels that are bootloader unlocked. Once paid off, they can be carrier unlocked to use on a different service but as far as I know the only people that have a bootloader unlocked Pixel running on verizon were bought unlocked at the Google store (or got an unlocked one on by mistake on RMA). There could be exceptions, but that is generally the case. If you are paid off, and your goal is to get a carrier unlocked phone, you may well succeed. If your goal is to get to an unlocked bootloader you will likely need a different device.

People have been trying everything possible to unlock Verizon Pixel phones since they were first released. I'm not saying he shouldn't try but it's not going to work. Just like Samsung phone purchased through Verizon, the bootloader has not been unlocked on them for quite a few years.

Mine isn't paid off. I did get verizon to carrier unlock the device. My friend has a unlocked pixel 4xl from google unlocked and is on at&t. Going to try his sim in my device to see if the oem toggle can be tripped.

Because you open a thread titled Possible Verizon bootloader unlock. That is misleading to say the least. You will never unlock a Verizon bootloader. You are either trolling or just ignorant. It looks like well over 100 have viewed this misleading post. Try whatever you want but how about trying before you post to save people the time they wasted reading your useless posts?

He has a valid point, it's a very misleading title.

they probably only temporarily unlocked your device which won't allow OEM unlocking... this is why I am happy I switched from Verizon to T-Mobile, with a bit of nice attitude and talking to the right reps T-Mobile has unlocked every device while still making payments for the pat year for me, including my 4 XL.

Is there a way through the developer mode to enable ESIM on a verizon pixel 4?
its unlocked to use on any carrier but not bootloader unlocked.
If there is a way and you have the steps please post.

So I am curious if you had any luck.... I also have to ask how well do you know the new files systems? I know this from 2019 but the newer phones with dual partitions as I read about learning from my pixel 2xl is that the carrier has control of OEM unlocking such as Verizon and because of this and I will say Verizon who is my carrier will play stupid and act like they know nothing about OEM unlocking and will not unlock that toggle ever due to supposed security risks to their network bands and because Verizon purchased the phones from Google , Google gives them permission to have control of the bootloader and good luck trying get any type of developer bare boned version of Android to flash... I'm not trying to bash your idea and I honestly don't know how much you really know about the dual partition file system.... I am just curious how your idea worked though I'm sure it didn't as there is just the 2 pages and nothing new posted....

Root without unlocking bootloader?

I accidentally bought the Verizon locked variant of the pixel 5. Now I can't unlock bootloader to flash the custom rims. Is gaining root access possible without unlocking the bootloader? If not, how would I go about unlocking the bootloader on this unnecessarily locked down pixel 5?

No root without unlocking the bootloader and the Verizon models cannot be unlocked.

How do you just "accidently" buy a Verizon locked phone?? Just like everybody else that bought a Verizon locked phone you'll never unlock the bootloader. Take it back if it's not doin it for you

I got it from best buy, and they activated it on verizon for me. It was supposed to be the unlocked model.

"Unlocked" in most people's minds is carrier unlock. The subset that cares and knows about BL unlock is very small. Another good measuring stick is discounts. If there is a discount beyond what you can get at the Google store, it is likely a carrier specific device and will have the BL locked permanently.

This is really not directed towards you, I know for a fact you know all this. I don't even think the sales people at BB know what bl unlock means. And unlocked has nothing to do with the ability to bootloader unlock, I just can't believe that this is still an issue for some folks. As for carrier devices you are entirely correct, however, I do believe that the only carrier that will permanently lock the OEM switch is Verizon but I could be wrong on that one. Even TM will allow you to bl unlock once you pay off the device. Verizon will never ever allow it. So the previous poster, even though the rep activated it on Verizon, it's device specific. I bought my P5 directly from Google and immediately activated it on Verizon with a physical sim and an eSim also on VZW. My OEM switch is still active to bl unlock it.
One final point, which I've made before, even Google sells a Verizon P5 through the Google store. If you buy that one it will not allow you to bl unlock no matter what you do. So I'm assuming BB has the same kind of setup, if you buy the VZW device you are **** out of luck. I once got stuck with a VZW Pixel and couldn't activate the eSim due to some silly VZW policy. It took me a month of phone calls to get refunded so never again. And I don't even bl unlock my devices any longer, but I want the option. Hey, you never know. lol

Yeah, I know that. I never did understand the particulars of that but I'm sure it has something to do with money of some sort to someone. There was always too much fine print and conditions. I'm pretty much stuck on Pixel now so I'll only buy from Google and hope for some kind of discount. On the P5 I got $50 off for something or other. If I were to buy an iPhone I would go to an Apple store. But the other members of my family have all carrier branded devices because they don't give a darn about unlocked carrier or bl able.

As far as I know, every Pixel device sold by Best Buy is Verizon branded. I don't remember where I learned that from, but get your phones from elsewhere.

T-Mobile variant OEM unlock

I bought a carrier unlocked Pixel 5 from Amazon. Unfortunately, it's a T-Mobile variant, and I can't perform a OEM unlock. I tried calling their customer care, but they're all clueless.
Is there any paid service to which I can turn to to get my device unlocked?
Also, I read forums where guys ask representatives in Twitter/FB messenger to get device unlocked. If this is possible, how do I go about this? Where do I get the representative contact?

Unfortunately all we know of is you will need the unlocked variant.
I don't believe any carrier Pixels(s) 5 are bootloader unlockable.

I'm not sure if this is true, but if you call them or pay off the device, you can get bootloader unlocked. You can try getting it SIM unlocked via T-Mobile app, if it's paid off.

Unfortunately, even if it is paid off, I need to have a T-mobile account (not sure if it is any account of the account by which the device was bought) associated with the mobile for atleast 40 days. No way around that. So unfair though. Even after it being paid off. Anyways, thanks for the answers. Really appreciate it.

Yup. This is the reply they gave in Twitter and FB both.

Just purchased a "unlocked" device on swappa only to receive a locked at&t pixel 5.
Requested carrier unlock by calling at&t customer service. My vzw Sim card started working after they unlocked but OEM unlock was still greyed out. Applied all pending updates in settings, then OEM unlock became available. Immediately unlocked the bootloader and loaded Los 20.
