Pixel 4a 5g. Open Gapps. Twrp. - Google Pixel 4a 5G Questions & Answers

Right I will start by saying, I am loving my new pixel and I will also say there is a "but" that "but" is I have now installed a custom ROM Lineage OS I also really enjoy this ROM though unlike most phones twrp is not yet supporting this device further more neither is Open Gapps meaning no WhatsApp , no pogo and many apps just won't work, I have been scratching my head on how to get past this or how long for this device to be supported, I don't want to switch to factory ROM as I'm not for google keeping constant tabs on my habits.
Any suggestions, and let's have a discussion as I am hyped about my new phone.

First, this thread should be moved to the "Guides, news and discussion" forum.
Second, as far as I now, most apps will start and work with microG as far as it is properly setup'd. If you want Gapps, you can install a systemless Gapps via Magisk. I already wrote about... Just read the Lineage thread!

You can install Google Camera on every ROM by yourself, so you don't have to judge ROMs by this feature
Dirty Unicorns is incredibly stable, it is what I would recommend.
I would recommend OMNI 8.1 as the performance is top notch for this ROM that will help you in gaming. As far as customization is concerned, this gives good amount of customization but not like resurrection remix.
And at last , use Skull shaddy GCam which is readily available without any further fix or setting.

Use OpenGapp ARM64 pico version, as this will give you minimum system apps such as google play store and google. After booting to the system you may install required useful apps such as gmail, youtube, maps etc from playstore. These apps can be easily uninstalled as they are installed as apk files from play store.

I have flashed this on OMNI without any issue.

I did never find any issue regarding dialer or anything in any ROM.
Make sure, always clean install any ROM.

Magisk is not specific to a ROM or even device. Current/latest Magisk version marked "stable" is the usual recommendation. Unless you're asking what version number is known working on this particular ROM (question wasn't specific enough to know exactly what you intended).
Use the link given in the previous reply.
Since Sultanxda has now unfortunately changed his smartphone and stopped developing his excellent ROM for the OnePlus, I will have to look for a new ROM. :crying:
With LineAge OS from sultan I never had a problem in the past, absolutely stable, super battery life and never an error, although I always installed all updates without ever reinstalling (only dirty flash).
Now I am looking for a ROM that runs as stable and problem-free as possible and is ideal for daily use.
Updating should also be possible without any problems and no new installations should be necessary, because clean flash takes so much time.
Customization of the ROM is not so important, I don't have to be able to adjust every color of every symbol
I would be very pleased about suggestions!

Go to phone setting search for 'home' tap on home apps > Phone app > select any app either phone(the one which comes preinstalled) or the google dialer(phone app by google).

The first one is the home page of OMNI 8.1 open project which is unified OS i.e. It can be used on oneplus 3 as well as oneplus 3t.
The second one is the download link to download the latest version of OMNI 8.1 ROM. However, if you use OMNI you will not need this link to update the ROM because OTA updater is inbuilt in OMNI ROM which first download and then flash the latest version.
You can also visit the following link in which all the oreo ROMs, Kernels, Gapps, google camera etc is given. But make sure the particular OS is built for your device. A ROM or firmware of oneplus 3 can brick oneplus 3t if flashed.

I just switched to gzr gapps. I don't really know what the difference is, but everything Google runs smooth as can be. You're going to need Nano gapps or bigger if you want face unlock
Bootleggers rom
Mady's X19 kernel
GZR Gapps
Magisk 16.0/16.4

Hi gFknQ,
As you probably know I am following your posts a little and saw your switch to GZR Gapps which made me curious.
Although I find the package on the internet, I can not find a description of it.
Why your switch to GZR Gapps and do you know any references on the internet about it?
Which GZR Gapps are you using btw, the zero or the nano package?
Zero seems the same as pico for OpenGapps but is much smaller in size.

Is there a Magisk module to remove all google apps and services?

I'm looking to get an Android phone but I don't want any google apps or services on it including the play store. Is there a Magisk module that can remove all the google apps and services and play store from a phone? I did a search for "remove google apps" and other such searches but could not find what I'm looking for. I see that the Aurora app store is an alternative play store. Is it safe to use?
Thank you for your advice!
Easiest would be to just flash a custom ROM and don't bother with installing Gapps. Voilà, free of Google apps and services.

Thank you for the reply. I agree but from my research I could not find custom ROMs available for the Pixel 3 that are officially supported and stable. Please recommend one if there is one that is officially supported and stable. If there is not I would like to know the steps after I root a phone to remove all the google apps and services.
https://f-droid.org/app/org.droidtr.deletegapps
But its very likely to experience bugs and problems (like force closes). The best option is to use a custom Rom
Or you can try the Nanodroid Module (to install microG), probably better than just remove GApps.
AuroraDroid/-store works as it should. I don't know what you mean by 'safe'.

Thank you for the reply. Ok I really would rather use a custom ROM. LineageOS to be precise but there is no official support for the Pixel 3. That's why I'm asking if there is a way, after rooting the phone, to remove all the google apps and services. You mentioned MicroG but does that actually remove all the google apps and services? I looked up MicroG and it looks to be for people who still want to use google apps and services but securely. I don't use anything google apps or services. There are some Microsoft apps I need for work so that's why I asked about Aurora. When I asked if Aurora is safe I meant does Aurora track or do anything unsecure.
Is there a LineageOS custom ROM that does work with the Pixel 3? If not then do I use MicroG to remove all the google stuff?
Sorry to ask so many questions. I've spent hours researching this stuff and there is so much info I read up on that I just need some clarity. Thanks for your patience.

To get rid of issues, uninstall any google apps you want systemlessly using Debloater ( Terminal Emulator ).

"Official" and "unofficial" are quite often just terms to clarify, if the builder is part of the dev-team and/or if the Rom/Code is reviewed by one of the dev-team. It is possible, that an unofficial Rom isn't working as good as an official would, but I experienced this quite rarely.
BUT: unofficials usually don't have the possibility to OTA update.
But in the end, "official" and "unofficial" doesn't have to mean much
So my tip: Install and try some Roms, unofficial ones too ^_^

MicroG is an open source and privacy focused Google Services Framework. Its goal is to let apps work, which rely on GApps. I suggested it to grant a bit more stability to your un-googled stock Rom. Because the GApps are most likely deep buried into your (Stock)System, which can lead to severe instability and crashes if you just forcibly rip them out.
At least that's my experience. I never had a usable system with a blank removal of GApps
On a custom Rom its not necessary, if all apps you use work without GApps

No, Aurora is safe as far as I know (I'm using it myself)

I can try to check later. An "official" Lineage is quite unlikely, but maybe I find smth else
But yes, if you can't find a fitting Rom, you'll have to try with manually debloating/microG.
You can try to debloat your phone slowly with "Terminal Debloater" like someone already suggested.
One App/Service after another. If smth breaks, you can simply revert it, because this works systemless
No problem, just ask XDA is a forum and I'm here to help
Lineage is available for Pixel 3. It is unofficial, but built by someone on the Lineage team. Check the Pixel 3xl forum. Most custom roms are posted there, but are actually for both devices. The thing is, most custom roms for the device come with GAPPs included (Including Lineage), so not useful for you. This is getting OT though.

Thank you for the very detailed reply. Very helpful. I decided to get a Oneplus 7T and not a Pixel 3. I did research and found that most custom ROMs for the Oneplus 7T do not officially support Android 10 as well as MicroG and TWRP. The unofficial custom ROMs note that there are bugs and some instability currently. Being a newbie and needing my Oneplus 7T to be reliable as it's my only phone I rather have an officially supported LineageOS with MicroG custom ROM when it's released. Until then I need help figuring out the best method to remove all gapps and services. I don't use any google apps. I do use Microsoft apps so I need those to not only work but be able to send notifications. I also need to have location services work for a non-google maps app and weather app. I would like to keep Oxygen OS as it has some customizations features I like. Am I asking too much? Lol. However, since microG is not supported I don't think I can do what I'm looking for since MicroG removes all gapps and services and replaces them including location services ability and notifications. Does Magisk have a module that can do what I'm looking for?
You'll likely find better help in the OP7T forums:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-7t
There is a debloater module you could use for this purpose, you'll find it on the Manager downloads section. Keep in mind that anything you do with a Magisk module is a systemless modification and the files will still be on your device (just masked by Magisk) and will return if you every disable/uninstall the module or remove Magisk. If you want a more permanent solution you'll need to use other means.

The "Manager downloads" is in the Magisk Manager, the app.
What I meant was that it will likely be easier for you to find help with debloating the device in its own forum.

SafetyNet basicintegrity fails

I have two Xiaomi phones, one Redmi Note 8 and one Redmi Note 10, both with unlocked bootloaders. I made a fresh factory reset on them and installed the latest version of Magisk.
My problem is that SN basicintegrity fails on both of them (and ctsProfile as well of course). But I want to take care of basicintegrity first.
What I have done already is to enable MagiskHide and also Hide Magisk app with a custom name.
For MagiskHide, I selected all modules under "Google Play services" and "Google Play Services for AR". Not sure if I should select anything else. I also tested hiding with a root checker app and it looks that hiding works.
I have no Magisk modules installed. Using stock ROM on both phones.
Is there anything else I should to to pass basicintegrity SN?
API error?
If so, just wait for some days new version will solve this problem.
Pixel 3 XL on android 11 with magisk 22. Safetynet passed up until a few days ago. Not now tho. I wonder what changed?

It's difficult to find info in one big thread, not sure why that's how most discussion happens. Separate threads make more sense.

Multiplying posts doesn't make sense in my opinion. Several different threads were created for the same issue. It's not really that difficult to check few last pages of the main support thread since the issue is relatively new
Yeah, multiple threads on the same topic aren't good.
But one big thread that mixes different discussions beats the whole idea. Threads were invented for a reason. To concentrate discussion on a specific topic or sub-topic, and to have a sensible title. To save you from scanning posts in a megathread to find out if they're about your topic or not. Also, not all discussion is necessarily recent.
I had the exact same issue yesterday.

The linked solution is:
Update Magisk (to build 22103 or later).
This thread is about the Magisk apps SafetyNet checker extension needing an update due to an API error. SafetyNet wasn't actually failing...
If you need a few tips on how to get SafetyNet passing, there are some collected here:

I had visited the link to your site, through Google search, while searching for a fix. I also went to magisk general discussion thread, and started reading from April 23rd backwards, in a bid to locate/trace "the solution." While doing that, I came across "the solution," but didn't really try that as I'm on a later stable build (23000) than that canary build.
Background: I started facing this issue, yesterday, after I installed 23.0, from 20.4—which I had been on for a long time and didn't really want to upgrade from to avoid something like this, but after updating my Redmi Note 7 to MIUI 12.5 (Q) (I'm on xiaomi.eu stable), I started having restarts. So, I made the jump.
The restarts stopped after uninstalling that build, so I decided to upgrade to the latest stable. Did that, only to find that SafetyNet no longer passes. Basic integrity fails, and that was before installing EdXposed, which usually causes this. When I first noticed it, I checked my Play Store for device certification status, and it came out positive. That changed after a couple of reboots—I don't know which one in particular, as there were quite some during that time.
I've tried everything—except uninstalling and re-installing magisk—without success: different versions of Universal SafetyNet Fix, MagiskHide Props, enabling and disabling MH.
I have decided to put up with it. Since only a couple of my apps are affected (no GPay in my country), I am trying to make do without them until I get my new phone. Don't wish to do something that would require a factory reset/data wipe, as this is currently my DD, and I'd hate to get stranded.
Thanks all the same.

Help to de-google my phone

G'day
I'm sick of google and everything they are about. Don't be evil my arse. I already do the simple stuff like using brave browser and duck duck go search. I'm hoping someone can advise me on how to strip my phone of as much google as possible and replace with aosp alternatives. Or even just point me towards some guides on it.
I am using a Samsung galaxy a22 5g rooted with magisk stock rom.
Thanks
I think you might want to flash a custom ROM, then use something like MicroG Magisk, NanoDroid or FOSSApps. Ungoogling an already Googled stock ROM might be more pain than flashing something community developed.
I'm currently running Lineage with Magisk GApps (so I can remove them anytime) and I'm slowly getting ready for the transition. So I'm also looking for more information.
I set up a VPS for myself (might be an overkill for you, but inspiration nonethelss) and I'm hosting OnlyOFFICE Community there and using their apps, I also host my own BitWarden password storage and a mail server (was kinda pain to set it up with all the methods for spam verification). This way some of my most sensitive data is kept on an encrypted drive on a server I myself control.
Then there's getting apps which are mainly available through Google Play - I found that uptodown does host apks, but that's far from an actually viable option (considering you really have to trust them when you're downloading apps there). Alternative stores providing the same apps as Google Play are always kinda worrying to use & trust.
So that's my two cents worth and a starting point, I'll also gladly accept some tips & tricks to accomplish this entirely, it's a long-lasting dream to leave Google altogether.

i think it's better to use a custom aosp rom with no gapps
if you still want stock rom :
make a recovery backup of "system" just in case
mount system
the folders that have apps are :
system/app
system/priv-app
system/product/app
system/product/priv-app
(if you use A11+ check also system-ext/app and priv-app)
delete anyhing related to google
if you don't want to delete use lucky patcher or titanium backup to freez them
if you choose freezing, make a recovery backup of "data"

Hey thanks for the reply and info. Flashing an aosp custom rom would be my usual go to. However I've been on an oppo with unlockable bootlader for last 18 months and now I got this samsung I find there is zero rom dev on this phone. The only options I can find are GSI which is a new concept to me and I'm a little uncertain about going that route.

Cheers for this. Agree on the first statement but having been on an oppo with unlockable bootlader for last 18 months and now I got this samsung I find there is zero rom dev on this phone. Do you think I should go with a GSI rom? If safe and stable I'm happy to do the research because I'd love to get a custom aosp rom going on this.
Afaik this samsung can't even access fastboot gotta use the Samsung flashing software instead and the only thread on twrp for this phone is experimental and doesn't seem to be confirmed as working by anyone.
Hence why so far I've stuck with stock and magisk
I used to flash heaps of roms and kernels on older devices but this whole GSI thing is new to me. If it's dicey I'll go the TB route with the folders you pointed me to. Cheers

if yo can backup system/vendor/boot/dtbo/data then go for it
if not , you will have to reflash the stock if anything goes wrong ...

looks like your options are risky , google the app name before freezing ...
don't freez :
"google Extservice" or something like that
"settingintelligencegoogle" and "modulemetadatagoogle"

Cool cheers for your help mate. Touche on the last point. New job with nice pay bump coming so that will be the go I think.
I use Graphene OS on my Pixel 6 and CalyXOS on the 4a. Both are very good degoogled ROMs.
I built a Magisk module for this some time ago. However, it's very likely that it won't work anymore and will probably cause a bootloop. I'm only posting it in case someone wants to use the repo as inspiration.

you forgot to mention that both GrapheneOS and CalyXOS are available ONLY for the Pixel phones
and the Pixels have a unique feature - the bootloader can be locked back AFTER flashing a custom ROM
Well I stand corrected ( said the man in the orthopaedic shoes)
want de-google? buy and iphone and done

Question Has anyone tried Omni rom on this device?

There's no dedicated thread for it here on xda forums. Apparently it's on omnirom's website and regularly maintained as well.
Those who have tried it please post how it compares to other roms. Thanks.

I just install omnirom right now... twice, with format data, factory reset... the same bootloop, stuck into mi logo...
I didn't find anywhere some installation instructions, I installed it after miui rom.
Omni is booting for me. works fine.

mind giving me a brief review?
is very very fast for a A12 ROM. faster than other A12 ROMs.
a few things are missing. There is no face unlock and the sound adjustment under Sounds.
I used it for face unlock: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/11-universalauth-face-unlock-for-all-roms.4419343/

What's about battery backup and stability?
Full gestures without lagging?
Extended gestures like long swipe to kill app in foreground...present?
Thanks in advance

I can't say anything yet. I only flashed OMNI yesterday evening and today the faulty update came.
Full gestures without lagging?
yes
Extended gestures like long swipe to kill app in foreground...present?
no
I wrote to the maintainer. Firmware 12.5 is fine. face unlock will not come as it was removed from AOSP.
I'll get a test build later. I don't know if it's already 12.1/L.
@morpheus620 hey can you please check which device's fingerprint this rom uses if you get a chance? thanks.
like which fingerprint?
the one in the power button. Which one else?

yes. Most roms use fingerprint from pixel devices to pass safetynet so I was wondering if it's the same in this case as well
I'm running omnirom right now, the latest Android 13 MicroG version:
omni-13-202305201702-sweet-MICROG
The instructions don't specify which MIUI kernel to use. I'm currently using 14.0.2.0 (android 13). I also tried 13.0.16.0 (android 12), and briefly 12.5.9.0 (android 11) -- all with separate clean installs. They all seemed to work.
It is bare-bones, without many included apps, which is fine. It has a phone dialer, messaging, and contacts app. They look like they have been somewhat updated vs. the really old AOSP versions. It boots up right away after installing, without any setup.
The MicroG safetynet test always fails with "integrity check failed" -- whether magisk is installed or not. It doesn't have an issue with the CTS profile, though.
I've tried the safetynet-fix modules, v2.4.0 and v2.3.1, both the original and MOD versions, but they didn't help. I've also tried HidePropsConf, but it also didn't help (I think that's mainly for CTS profile issues, anyway, which this doesn't have).
My banking app is still working despite that, but it's too bad it won't pass. On /e/ OS I can get it to pass, using safetynet-fix v2.4.0 (original) and HidePropsConf.
Wireguard VPN works, but "Always-on VPN" and "Block connections without VPN" don't work properly. This is also the case for some versions of LineageOS and for /e/ OS. So you have to leave those settings off.
All of the cameras/lenses are available to Camera2 API and working in Open Camera. They are also available in /e/ OS. Many of the new LineageOS builds only have Camera2 API access to the main front and back cameras, so they're not suitable for me.
It does allow for partial and extended screenshots, but there's no swipe gesture to do screenshots.
It is fast charging with my phone's bq2597x charger.
It is using the JARVIS kernel, dated May 20. The rom has weekly updates, but I'm not sure if it's a new kernel version, or if it just gets rebuilt as part of the update.
I ran /e/ OS for awhile before this. It is also good, but it's Android 12, and not as up to date.
