Question Bixby Routines - Share Ideas? - Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra

Just got the S21 Ultra (from note 8). Stumbled upon Bixby Routines. It's great.
Always tried using Tasker but never used it much because it wasn't as easy as using Bixby Routines. Tried using similar apps as well but they never seemed to work well.
So far I've got auto-rotate for when I use video watching apps such as YouTube. Power Saving mode while I'm asleep.
Care to share some ideas?

Love Tasker but now giving a chance for Bixby Routines. So far I have set driving profile to start playing YouTube music, set audio to 100%, turn Dolby on, keep phone unlocked. Then Show AOD when charging, auto rotate on when YouTube is launched. Would like them to go crazy like tasker with some Good lock module but doubt it Had few htlm get task so I might go back to Tasker, but imo it should drain more battery compared to Bixby Routines

When i go to work, since i don't touch my phone that often, it auto changes resolution to fullHD, and turns on AOD + turns off bluetooth.
During the night turns on energy saving and airplane mode

Wireless charging between 10p - 7a will NOT fast charge so the charger fans aren't buzzing on my nightstand next to my head.
I hated everything Bixby but I see that I now have to use routines.
Good topic. How to see more useful usages posted.

I use Routines with my Android Car Stereo to Automatically start the Hotspot when it connects to my Cars bluetooth. It also turns up the volume on the phone and reads aloud text messages.
Definitely looking forward to a couple new ideas myself.

AOD & Sync on when charging, off when not charging (apps like whatsapp and outlook have their own sync which isn't affected by this)
Button on my homepage for 5G/4G
Power saving to turn on at 20% (I only turn this on if I plan to go out for the day)

Is there a way to perform an action on switching out of one app to another e.g. To close the app you switch from e.g. Chrome, so that it doesn't chew up battery in the background? Or when closing an app to put it to deep sleep?

I've set it to disable 120 Hz in apps like YouTube and tiktok and games where I wouldn't notice it anyway.
Also set network mode to 3G and disable data when connected to WiFi.

So I think the WiFi one is sort of redundant as your mobile data swtiches off if you're on WiFi with WiFi calling.
The YouTube one is actually a great spot - at low brightness the screen stays in high refresh mode, so forcing it to switch to 60 is useful!

I created a button to force to 2G only in areas where reception is poor and i dont require mobile data (2g gives better reception).
But does anyone know where this button can be used other than as a widget on homescreen?

Set location services on when opening google maps
Play playlist from spotify when bluetooth connect to my car
Put on do not disturb when opening camera application
I love bixby routines, the only thing i keep after debloating a Samsung phone

Anandtech has a write-up on the S21U display. It appears it has the same odd behavior of forcing 120hz full time during low ambient lighting, like the Note 20. The screen therefore consumes more power in dark rooms than in a bright setting. I have an (arguably bad) habit of reading my phone in bed before I fall asleep, and before I get up. So I've set a routine to switch in/out of adaptive mode during my normal bed times, so much of my usage in darkness is in 60hz mode to save battery.

It does this because 60hz changes the tint at low brightness. The oneplus 8pro was bad for this, you could see the display flicker and change tint when the refresh rate changed at low brightness , it was horrible.

I can't comment from personal experience, but from the Anandtech article:
it’s still not exactly clear at to the technical reason why Samsung is employing this limitation in the first place, as I’m not seeing any difference at all in the screen quality when tricking the phone’s ambient brightness sensor and it switching between VRR/LFD on and off.

Regardless, switching to 60hz is a solution if you want to prioritize battery life in those conditions.

Hmmm, I set a routine @ 10PM to switch to 60hz mode, that was supposed to end at 7AM with the actions reversed. It didn't switch to 60hz mode @ 10PM, so I manually switched it, and it didn't revert @ 7AM. I'll try two distinct routines.
EDIT: I set up a distinct routine to set to 60hz AFTER the existing "time period" routine, and the existing time period routine took effect properly this time, so the redundant distinct routine wasn't needed. Don't know why it didn't work the first night.

Brightness turned down and Power Saving mode turned on during my sleeping hours.
I always leave my phone unplugged while sleeping (charge fully before sleep).
I guess if I were to charge while sleeping, I'd plug into a smart plug, then have the plug turn off after the charge reached 100.

Yeah, a couple times my YouTube rotate didn't turn on. But on my wife's note 10 plus, so far has been flawless.

Just bumping this up since Routines is very useful. Been using this since my last phone and it made life a bit easier.
My settings are:
1. IF connected to home wifi, THEN keep phone unlocked.
2. IF charging, THEN sync is on.
3. IF connected to car bluetooth, THEN media volume is set to max and play favorite playlist on spotify.
4. IF time period (12AM-6AM), THEN power saving mode on, DND on, bluetooth off, NFC off.
5. IF camera app opened, THEN DND on.

Oh, gave me a great idea of keeping phone unlocked! thanks. I'll have to set one to keep phone unlocked when hooked up to android auto or the car BT.
I mess with my kids with the Low Battery Announcement (Phone needs charging, Bruh. No Cap). Lol

If it isn't connected to my Home WiFi between the hours of 10PM and 8AM, it alerts me because this typically means that the power has gone out.

Battery savings guide

Hello, i use Dalingrin's kernel (6/30) and CM7 nightlies (121 currently).
Sometimes deep sleep is nice for my battery, sometimes it doesn't save energy.
It's life but i need a few days between battery charging.
so i decided to add a few workarounds, here they are:
1. Airplane mode everytime + wifi on/off when i need it. Only ten seconds to activate/deactivate with CM7 status bar.
2. Battery widget monitor: it enables history of battery consuming. Very good to act that deep sleep is effective or not.
3. uninstall applications which sychronize when nook should be sleeping: K9, DSPmanager, hotapps, appbrainz.
3. Advanced task killer pro: Crazy mode when screen is off. Very nice for last applications.
Of course, you are welcome to comment those tricks and to add some
I guess it depends on use, but I'm on day 3 on a charge, running at 47%. I just have the screen at 15% most of the time, and I don't disable sync. I mostly do reader, email, internet, so that might be part of my success.

1 is probably not a good idea, since sometimes Airplane mode sticks.
2 has nothing to do with saving battery, but okay..
3a does nothing if there is no network connection (assuming sanely written programs)
3b is stupid and shouldn't ever be used.
You want to save battery? Turn off wifi when the screen goes off. You can do this automatically with Setting Profile Lite or Tasker, probably some others. I've found that the wifi sleep setting doesn't do anything for me, I can continue to ping the NC for 10+ minutes after the screen goes off so clearly the wifi is still up.
And watch Spare Parts partial wake locks and see if you have any misbehaving apps. I find that Maps with Latitude enabled misbehaves without a network connection and constantly is trying to update or something, so I cleared data on Maps to get out of Latitude on that device. CPUSpy will also show you how much deep sleep is ongoing.
The NC is going to use at least 10%/hr at low backlight doing simple tasks, I've seen it use up to 25% overclocked playing games.
While asleep it uses about 1% every 3-4 hours. Could probably do even better if you don't have a boatload of apps and widgets like I do.
Grab "Where's my Droid's Power" or whatever the application is called, and see where all the power is going.

Null Rom and Battery Life

Like most users, I would like to maximize my battery life when using the null rom. I'm assuming that Bluetooth would be a good place to start. I am thinking about disabling the motion function that turns on the screen. Can a tasker script be written that turns on/off bluetooth and the bluetooth sharing function when the side button is pressed so that an internet connection is available? Also, any other battery tips?
You have to weigh usefulness with battery life. When i had motion sensor turned off, i would get about 3 days of medium usage on null rom. With motion sensor on I get 2-2.5 days of medium usage. It's so nice being able to see basic information with just a flick of the wrist.

Can you share your Voltage Control settings?
How about Bluetooth Auto Connect settings?
I've sought out a few battery life threads, but I'm nowhere near two days!
Hoddy, have you tried exploring the settings in the Bluetooth Auto Connect? I think you can turn it on/off based on waking up the watch.

if you do so you'll lose the ability to get notifications on your watch whenever they arrive on your phone until you look at your watch. And you'll have to wait staring at it during the time the daemon starts the connection & sync and finally showing you any new notification !
but what you can do with tasker for example is automatically shut down bluetooth during the night. maybe even motion sensor.
up to you bro

just my watch ... the idea is to conserve battery usage at night ..
You could use tasker like i have to switch the screen to off(on the watch) and then switch Bluetooth of from the time you require until a set time in the morning that will turn Bluetooth back on and screen back to always on.

I've consider that .. but although turning-off bluetooth in the phone will stop notification, it'll actually drain the watch because it'll keep trying to connect to the phone ..

Don't bother. You won't gain mych by enabling Airplane mode. What drains battery most is the display (of course depending heavily on your watchface - my ambient mode has just 2 lines of very thin and small text, and it drains next to nothing).
I think what you're looking for is the Cinema mode - just tap the crown twice before going to bed, and twice after you wake up.
Sadly, this mode is incompatible with alarms (on watch) since they are completely silenced as well (including vibrations), but if you use alarm on the phone then you're fine.
... Or you could just disable ambient mode every night, but that's inconvenient.

Ways to improve battery life?

Sorry for the long list of screenshots above, and also for creating a new topic, but didn't want to spam the normal board for battery discussion.
Anyway, I have the N920I model of the Note 5, using it on Telkomsel in Indonesia, and getting average 3+ hours SOT on this device, which I think could stand to be much better, given I got around the same figure on the Moto X 2014, which has significantly worse battery life according to most counts.
Here's my settings:
Screen brightness 60%, auto
Sync on
NFC off
Location high accuracy
Bluetooth on from 8 to 3.30, then off for the rest of the day
Connected to an Asus ZenWatch 2
Wi-Fi on from 4 to night, from plug out in morning to 8
Here's the list of apps I disabled:
And here's how my usage goes:
* Plug in when I wake up, then out at 7-ish.
* Get to school and let My Places switch to "Work" mode, where it changes the Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and power saving settings and turn off data before starting the first class.
* Turn it on between classes to check for new messages.
* Leave at 3-ish, and get home, letting My Places change the settings back to normal. At this point, the phone is usually at 70% with an hour of screen on time to report.
* Use it periodically throughout the rest of the day, switching between WhatsApp, Snapchat, Netflix, Chrome and YouTube.
* Plug in at 8 or 9, then plug out before I go to bed, topping up what's left in the morning.
It's a fairly light usage pattern, which reinforces the point that this phone should get more than just 3 hours. Any specific app you're seeing here that might be putting its toll on battery life, or a specific setting that you can advise enabling or disabling?

Just try counting how many threads there are about battery life in this section. A lot! I, being one of the victims of horrendous drains, have tried everything. If you keep the device relatively clean(software) and it still drains then there is only one thing you can do. Wait for the marshmallow. I'm sorry but that's what it means owning a samsung device.

Already did! But Android OS is always the top consumer.
thanks!
As Octa_core mentioned, there are quite a few threads about battery life already. They might be of benefit if you haven't already looked through them.
Here are a few things you might try, if you haven't already.
- Turn off location high accuracy, or only turn on location when you need it (if you can)
- Turn off location history
- Turn off Always Allow Scanning in Wifi advanced settings
- Turn off S-Pen settings (alerts, sound, vibration, detection)
- If using Google Fit, disable activity detection in settings (this definitely helped my idle drain)
- Turn off anything you don't need to sync on your Google Account
- Disable enhanced LTE services
- Turn off Motions and Gestures you don't use
- Set touch key light duration to Always Off (under Display)
- Turn off Smart Stay
- Set Screen Mode to Basic
- Use a darker theme
- Try disabling some apps, especially S-Finder (may require Package Disable Pro to disable some apps)
- What does your signal look like in GSam? Some drain may be due to poor signal.
If none of that helps, then uninstall or disable (probably will need Package Disable Pro to disable) all apps you installed, and I also recommend that you disable S-Finder. Turn off all radios (location, NFC, bluetooth, wifi, even data) other than cell. Reboot after those changes. Monitor and see how idle battery drain is. After I did this, my idle drain was around 0.4% per hour. Then you can gradually enable radios/apps, only 2-3 at a time, reboot, and see how it impacts idle drain. Continue until you find app/radio that increase idle drain.

Question S21 Ultra Always On Display

Hi everyone.
Just wanted the community's opinion on what your thoughts are about the AOD.
How many of you use it regularly? And those that do, what is your preferred setting - Always on (+/- scheduled) or Tap to Show for 10 seconds? What has been your experience with battery life and overall usability? Any tips or tricks? Any downsides?
Those who don't use AOD, could you please post your reasons, along with any experience with battery drain or screen burn in or other issues.
I'd like to use AOD (on the always on setting), but am not very sure what it costs in term of battery or screen life. The former is a non-issue for me personally but if it's going to affect screen life or quality, I may hesitate a little. I tried the tap to wake for 10 seconds thing but it seems to beat the purpose as I can just as easily go to the lockscreen with a double tap and neccessitating user-interaction negates any real benefit of an always-on feature.
My current settings are:
AOD Always on (scheduled from 7am to 10pm)
FIngerprint reader always on (so I can go directly from AOD to Homescreen without having to go through the lockscreen)
Fingerprint icon set to tap-to-show (just as a hint if i ever miss hitting the correct position when trying to unlock)
Your thoughts and suggestions are most welcome.
I only use AOD via AODNotify...that should have been an option in the poll.
I use a Tasker profile to turn AOD on (always) when a message arrives and revert back to tap to show when message is cleared.
I keep it on all the time, really helpful and doesn't seem to drain too much battery.
Btw does anyone know if it's possible to add weather info to the S21Us AOD?
One of the few things I still miss from my P4XL..
I don't use it drains a lot of battery
I use to always have it active on my 10+ but it got to be annoying. Tap on is fine.
I don't care to be informed every bloody second... that ain't no way to live.

I like to keep the setting to always on with fingerprint always enabled showing thumbprint on screen always .
What i have noticed is the aod doesnt turn off when the phone is in pocket or lying upside down.
That would save so much battery.
AOD used to turn off automatically in my s9plus when the phone was in pocket .
May be this feature is disabled due to lack of active proximity sensor

The 10+ has a proximity sensor and AOD always remains on if set to. The face down off be nice.
Maybe it caused issues in the past. Samsung is sort of hit or miss though.
I have yet to use the fingerprint sensor, lol don't even know if it works.
Last thing I want is to get locked out of a device.
As soon as you set an access password this can happen and through no fault of your own. A hardware failure or glitch can trigger it. Had no password been set the setting wouldn't be enforced. I've gotten locked out of a PC bios like that, never again.

Does the fingerprint icon shift around like the clock or battery percentage (it has very little room to move around though)?
I hope it does, otherwise it'll land up causing screen burn if it's in the same position with the same pattern all the time. Have you noticed this?

Probably shifts it over a few pixels but in bright light over time it will cause uneven aging.

According to your battery stats, how much drain is attributed to the AOD? Could you post a screenshot at the end of a day please?
I don't know how much drain is attributed to the AOD. As soon as I get the newest Samsung I turn it in and crank it up before I literally do anything else. I keep every setting on ALL the time (Bluetooth, wifi, nfc, etc). The battery gets me through a regular day. I'll try and post a screen shot. Today I took it off the charger 3 hours ago and I haven't stopped using the phone. I'm sitting at 85%.

Cycle the battery between 35-65% if you can (and then raise both those numbers slowly over time) or else you will fry your battery fast.
If you're just going to buy a new phone in 2 years, then, don't bother with what I said.
