Question What are the 5G data connection icon differences? - Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra

I've just got my S21 Ultra (998B) and noticed the icon for 5G changes from a solid white background to a black background with white outline. What is the difference here?

I imagine the one on the right is the Ultra Wideband

S21 Ultra (998U1)

depends if its sending or receiving data

I had the one with the white background and it wasnt ultra wideband for sure. I guess it is CSC based (?)

Definitely CSC related, I had edited my CSC files on my Note 20 Ultra and these icons with the white and black backgrounds were present vs. the big 5G logo that was standard on the U1 firmware, never did figure out what the difference between the 2 (solid and hollow) backgrounds was. I preferred those icons over the 5G one, but such is life. At least I have decent 5G signal in my area.

I'm not sure if it's really relevant but when I have the "hollow" 5G icon the speed test.net app shows it as an LTE connection, so maybe it's not "full" 5G when it's hollow?

When it's lit up you're actively using your 5G connection for data. When it's black you're using LTE.

Yeah that's exactly it. You still have a 5G connection but it's not in use because it isn't strong enough.

According to the manual

The one on the right is a higher band. I have experienced speeds upto 600mbps when it is white and normal 30-40mbps speeds when it's dark

It looks to me like it does. From what I understand the "UW" is for the Ultra Wideband mmWave.
I just ordered the carrier unlocked red from Samsung it show I'm getting the S20 FE 5G UW (SM-G781UZRMXAA). I tried checking out with a carrier unlocked blue and it didn't show the "UW", so I think you might be right that its just the red.
Does it work?

I'm not sure how to confirm it. My order email says they sent me "Galaxy S20 FE 5G UW 128GB (Unlocked)" but the box and the phone have no "UW" branding on it anywhere.

If you have a tmo or att sim in, you can dial *#2263# from the Samsung dialer. If you have a Verizon sim, just download the Google phone app from the play store and dial *#*#2263#*#* and the band selection menu will pop. Here are my bands from the n20. Bands 260 and 261 are mmw

Question China variant missing B66 band on T-Mobile

Never purchased a non-US compatible device and had a question:
The China variant seems to have most T-Mobile bands (both do not have B71) as the global variant WITH THE EXCEPTION OF B66. Does anyone know whether this will be an issue?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
i get my china variant Mi 11 Ultra on Monday, im on T-mobile and i live in NYC. i can report back to you then.

Lucky you! Yes please let me know how the reception turns out. I don't really care about 5G since it's not that widespread, but wondering how 4G LTE will be like.
If you have any opinions on the China variant as you begin to use it, please post as well! Also considering it since there is a cheaper variant (8G+256GB).
Any updates how CN version working in NY with T-Mobile?
interesting to see speed test on 4G. Is actually supporting one 5G band.

when i ran speed test i get 10Mbps here in Queens at my house. but the real test for me will be at my job, since i dont get any WiFi there.
I also did a factory reset (a habit i always do) and playstore disappeared, i looked on youtube for easy video to re-install. This is my 1st Xiaomi phone, so im getting use to MIUI. but hardware, much better than my Note 20 Ultra. the display is better and the frame rate i see it faster on mi 11. I plan to flash global ROM, but stuck waiting 168 hours for unlock to go thru. this is only my 2nd day with the mi 11 and i like it already. going out later to take some pics.
Don't buy China version because it doesn't support well Carrier Aggregation combinations used by TMUS so you don't get good speed from network. Also it missing B71 and B66 bands - common in US networks. 5G only works with n41 SA when available theory.
Here is list of supported bands and Carrier Aggregation combinations: https://cacombos.com/device/M2102K1C

Disappointed to hear you are only getting 10Mbps in a city like Queens. Do update is on what your down speed is like at work!
Thank you and good luck with flashing to global!
Is there somewhere I can view a map of which T-Mobile bands are used throughout the US?

tested at work...70Mbps! so glad i have wifi at home
I've used Chinese version phones without B66 for years, with t-mobile / google fi. Never had any issue with it. My wife uses an iPhone US version, I have stronger signal than her sometimes.

Do you ever use the phones in rural/sparsely populated areas?

yes. the coverage in those areas are bad either with the US iphone or Chinese android phones with tmobile, imho. i only travelled to those places so i am not authoritive on this assessment.

Wow why the difference? What kind of speeds were you getting with other phones at home? Was it about the same?
My mi11 in China can work 280Mbps by 5G. Although the band is a little less, it is not affected in China

Mobile Reception in UK

Anyone finding reception poor with this phone? Trying to help someone else by comparing my S10+ to their S20 FE. At the problem location my S10+ has a solid 2 bars, which is enough to make a quality call. The FE moves between mostly no signal & one bar using the same SIM. FE is fully up to date software wise.

s20 fe 5g firmware on s20 fe 4g

hi guys, I have a question hope someone can help.
I have a S20 FE 4g snapdragon (G780G) and would like to know if it is possible to flash on it an old firmware of a S20 FE 5g snapdragon.
AFAIK, s20fe 5g snap and s20fe 4g snap are the exact same phones, except for the 5g functionality (modem).
I don't want 5g to work on my 4g version of course, but with old firmwares of the s20 fe 5g (one ui 2.0 iirc) it was possible to hide the punch hole the way I like it (moving the status bar down, system wide) while on the 4g version that came with one ui 3 and newer, that is not possible anymore (you have to hide the punch hole per app basis, so for example in settings app you can't hide it, and you don't move the status bar actually, you can just tint black the existing status bar now).
hence my question, can i downgrade my s20 fe 4g to a old s20 fe 5g version? in theory it should work evertything except the 5g which I don't care about at all, but maybe it won't flash at all or even worse I could brick my phone?
tia if you could help!
firmware from another device and firmware that is also. too old will not be flashed via Odin. if it was flashed your device would be bricked. this is a big NOPE!!!

Question 5G now available in my city...but,can't able to use because of the awaited Software update...when can I expect this?

Expecting a fast update...

Patience is key although pestering on Samsung members might help
FWIW, 5G is all but gimmicky. I had 5g enabled for a few days and then came to realize what's the use of having 5g to get emails and whatsapp messages. 5G makes sense if you download a lot of stuff/ if you watch 8k videos on youtube or you'd like to see crazy download speeds in the speed test app... I hit 1200mbps download once on the app... Anything else, 5g is only going to drain your battery and trust me you will revert to 4g once the vanity wears off.

Agreed, it's not only drain battery fast but it will consume the data like hell, for sure after a while I'll also going to switch back-forth to 4G-5G
I guess they will have to update the modem config. so maybe soon. This is similar to my country, it take quite a while for samsung to enable N28 SA band and 5G CA despite that the phone hardware is capable of N28 SA (but actually 5G CA is a surprise for me because I don't think that the hardware will be capable of)
